Importing folders by Genre (not artist)?

Alright.....I have a ton of songs all nicely organized by folders named by Genre. I have also edited all the song's genres to 6 different catagories. When I import songs into itunes, it duplicates all the songs into a new folder. In that folder are tons of new folders for each artist in my collection. I have a ton of one-hit wonders and this mess of a thousand new folders (many with one song each) is silly.
I want itunes to read my existing filing system (by genre) and not duplicate every song in this new folder. Can I get itunes to read my existing folder? Or can I get itunes to rebuild it's new folder by genre.....so I can then delete my folder...no need for memory robbing duplication. Any ideas? Thanks.
p.s. I have a video ipod, if that matters.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, know that I can create playlists within itunes, once the music is imported. That should be easy after I sort the songs by genre in the full library.
The problem is how it copies the files on my computer. I already have the mp3-4 files on the computer, but when I go into itunes to import it into the library, it copies every song into a new spot on the computer (in the 'my music folder') Now I have 2 copies of every song on the hard drive and the new one that itunes set up is organized by artist, not by genre.
I did find an upload that might help: iTLU V. 1.22 I would just assume fix this within the exist iTunes program.

  • Itunes won't add files or folders, also will not import

I have some songs on itunes, but now itunes won't add files or folders, also will not import at all.
I did an uninstall and reinstall but still does not work.
    Can anyone help?

Ok. So its finally working again. Not sure why, but maybe my experience will help someone else.
All I can say is that I have been trying a relentless combination of mounting and mounting the drive, checking and unchecking the 'copy files to iTunes Library', running 'consolidate library', and everything in between. One of them finally kicked it back into action.
Nice Apple. 9.2.1 isn't buggy at all...that's sarcasm.

  • Premiere CC 2014.1 + SAN: Can't import folders

We used to edit off an of-the-shelf NAS and just recently upgraded to a Facilis TerraBlock SAN.
Now whenever we try to import folders, Premiere won't import anything. The import dialogue shows up briefly, but the progress bar just skips to the end and no files show up in Premiere. Individual or multiple files will import fine if chosen directly, but as soon as anything is nested in a folder or subfolder, it just won't come in. We tried the import dialogue, media browser, Adobe Bridge and drag&drop from Finder. Importing folders from the NAS or local storage still works fine.
We're editing on multiple maxed-out 2013-iMacs (10.9.5) using CC 2014.1. The issue is persistent on all machines and through all versions of Premiere from CS6 to CC 2014.1.
Our current workaround is to import the folders into AfterEffects (which strangely works fine with the SAN) and then copy/paste them into Premiere.
Any ideas how to fix this issue?

I am having the same issue as IronAtin. Folders will not import from our Facilis Terrablock into Premiere CC 2014. This used to work just fine in Premiere CC. Please keep us updated as to any fixes/workarounds. Thanks.

  • Aperture 3 Importing Folders as Projects is taking days to complete

    Hello,
I acquired Aperture 3 a week ago and decided to give it a try. I've been using Lightroom since version 1. All my photos are in NEF (Nikon RAW) format and stored on an External HD. I used the A3 option FILE > IMPORT > FOLDERS AS PROJECTS command and selected folders from year 2008, 2009, 2010...this are 109 folders (13401 photos) from a total of 348 from year 2003 to date, meaning I am importing a fraction of all photos.
A very important note: I use the import option "Store Files: In their current location"...so that A3 is not moving, copying and so on, any files - it's just referencing them.
The problem starts here - it took Aperture 3 almost 24 hours to complete the "import"...i.e. to fill all the Projects with the corresponding photos. But the IMPORT PROCESS continues forever, today is day 4...the Aperture Library on this has grown to 18 GB and still growing. There is small but constant Hard Disk activity between the External HD with the Photos and the internal HD with the Library.
If I try to quit Aperture I get a message box:
+"Do you want to continue importing? Aperture is currently importing files. If you quit, the import task will be canceled and any files that have not been fully imported will be removed. | Quit | Continue |"+
How much longer shall I wait? Is it really importing or is this a bug? Why is there no progress bar or counter to give an estimate or idea of what is going on?
Just as reference: I imported the same folders (109) into Lightroom 3 Beta with the option "Store Files: In their current location" and it took only 1-2 hours.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kostadin

    Kostadin,
I'm noticing same thing today. This morning I imported about 100 Canon 7D RAW images from my memory card, which took about 5 minutes upon which I got the "Delete Images and Eject Card?" dialog. I accepted and removed the card.
4 hours later, I still have a "Importing..." spinning ball on Aperture. For the first couple of hours, I was trying to send emails with a few images and it would take 20 minutes for Aperture to generate the JPEG in the email. Now it only takes 10-15 seconds. BUt it is still "importing". So aperture continues to function, but it has some process going which keeps my CPU fans running on the MacBook Pro.
I am anxious to see just how long it takes to IMPORT... after it finishes importing.
What's it doing for this long?
    Jim

  • LR4.2 and "Do not import selected duplicates" does not always work.

LR4.2 and "Do not import selected duplicates" does not always work. Running a Mac, 10.6.8, I am cleaning up hard drives, organizing old files. There are times lightroom 4.2 (and before) does not recognize already imported raws and does not gray them out. These are backed up cards and folders of of raw images. Why is the "do not import selected duplicates" check box not working???!!!

There's a known (and old) bug when duplicate identification fails on photos
that have been imported from another catalog.

  • How to import a album with multiple artists in the one album?

How do I import a album with multiple artists as the one album.  Everytime I try to do this it does not collate it into one album, the other artists come up seperatley, also if this is possible can you set so that it works automatically everytime?
    Hope someone can help.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • No seperate albums created when importing folders containing photos

Hi ... Need some help here please..
When importing folders containing photos in iPhoto each folder would be made into an Event. When I do the same with Photos all my pictures are placed into Albums  - All Photos. No separate Albums are made for each folder, all pictures are mixed up together.
    Why is Photos doing this?
(Im not importing from iPhoto ... New Mac)

    Simon
Yes it does say that, but I have to say that a significant number of people can't get that to work, and I've never found an adequate reason why.
I recommend that you begin to import at the bottom of your hierarchy. Drag to the left hand pane and iPhoto will create a Roll and and album of the same name. You can then create the enclosing folders in iPhoto: (File -> New Folder).

  • Playlist GONE, can't import .itl file cause not appear 2 b a valid exp file

For some unknown reason my playlists totally disappeared--I am so SAD. I want to import my library from my music folder but I keep getting the message "The file itunes library 1/08/2008.itl cannot be imported because it does not appear to be a valid exported file". Huh? What can I do so that I can have my music back. I literally just sold most of my CD's and had over 600 songs in my library. THANKS for ANY HELP

the exact same thing happened to me! i have over 13,000 songs. Not only does it not allow me to import my previous playlist, but it also won't let me add the folders that contain the music, so i'm missing half of my music... My computer alerts me that I do know have write capabilities, but I apparently had them this morning because it was all there then... I don't get it.

  • Import Folders As Projects Broke?

When I click on import folders as projects nothing happenes.  It is as if this feature does not work at all.  I have tried to reinstall Aperture but this does not fix the issue.  Also, when I import files into aperture I dont get the Destination pop-up menu.  Does anyone know what the problem is?  Has anyone had this issue before?

Are you saying you don;t even get the first tear window that lets you select the folder or is that once you select and press import nothing happens?
I fit is the first case (not tear screen) then try moving the preference file out to the desktop. See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics about 2/3 of the way down for instructions for moving the preference file.
If the problem is nothing happens after you press import post back.

  • Missing Import folders as Keyword Collections

Hello, I have Final Cut Pro X 10.1.4. I am practicing/training using Apple Pro Training Series. The book describs an option to "Import Folders as Keyword Collections" in the Media Import Options dialog. I am missing this option for some reason. I searched the web and could not find the answer to my problem. Could any one tells me how to get this option? I have attached screen shot of the Media Import dialog.
    Thanks

The wording has changed slightly. Look at Keywords: There's are check boxes for folders and Finder tags.

  • Importing folders always says can't find location

    Hi,
I recently bought a new PC and tfr'd all my old music & folders waiting to be imported into iTunes onto my new computer, not a problem. I do have a slight niggle though, when I go to import folders into iTunes I have no problems it's just that I set iTunes to copy imported files so I can delete the folders afterwards, but after I delete the folders and I go to import my next file I get this little error box telling me it can't find the location of the current folder (because I've just deleted it) so why does iTunes open the folders when I click to import them in? I never had this problem on my old PC running Vista but not I'm on Windows 7 it's happened ever since.
As you can seen I get this message EVERYTIME I delete a folder recently imported, is there a fix for this? I imagine it may not be an iTunes issue but I'm hoping someone on here has had a similar issue as I can't word it right into Google.
    Thanks

iTunes remembers the last folder you imported with Add Folder to Library and tries to preset the "Browse for Folder" dialog to that location, generating an error if the folder doesn't exist. It ought to test for the presence of the folder first and default to a known location such as the media folder if not found but there it is. Change your workflow. If you're letting iTunes reorganise the media the way it likes to then just drop a copy into the Automatically add to iTunes folder. If you won't need the originals after import move instead of copying, though I'd recommend always having a backup...

  • How do I solve "import failed" when trying to import folders to the organizer?

When I try to import folders to the organizer I get an "import failed" message.  Then it says that files or folders selected did not contain any supported file types or they are already in the catalog.  I don't think it can be the latter because I just installed it today and haven't been able to import any files or folders.  Can anyone give me troubleshooting ideas; I can't find any in the help menus.  Thanks a bunch!!

The JPG data might be corrupted just enough for PSE to choke on the image, although other programs can open the image OK.  Try opening one of the images in XnView, for instance, and saving that image; which will re-write the JPG data correctly.  Then see if Organizer can import it.

  • How do I import edited images and NOT masters from iphoto

I'm trialling aperture with a view to migrating from iphoto. I having difficulty importing images from iphoto in so much as whatever options I use to import aperture brings both the master photo and edited version from iphoto. I'd prefer to import only masters where no edited version exists AND where a photo has been edited within iphoto just the edited version (and all metadata, faces, keywords, places etc).
    Is this possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Then you don't want to import your iPhoto Library, what you want to do is export the files from iPhoto (File -> Original *Kind: Current*) to folders on the desktop and then import from there.
Note that using the Current setting will miss a lot of metadata. If you want that you'll need to set the *Kind to Jpeg* and check the boxes at "titles and descriptions" and "Places information". However, if you're unedited images are Raw you won’t get the masters, obviously.

  • Importing folders into albums (PE7) & keeping structure

    hi,
Is there any way to import folders (w/pix) into photoshop elements 7 albums while keeping the folder structure in albums?
    For example:
    Folders
    2009
    +-->  Jan
    +-->  Feb
        +---->  Kids
        +---->  animals
to the same but in Albums?
    thanks
    Jason

By the way, you can't find photos that are in two albums via searching using PSE commands.
In PSE 7, you can do this using the the Find > By Details command. But it's very clumsy, especially if you have lots of albums.  It's a lot easier to do with tags.
You also can't limit a search to within an album, but you can limit a search to within a specific tag.
In PSE 7, sometimes you can use the Organize pane, but often you have to resort to the Find > By Details page.
For example, to find all the photos in an album containing a certain tag, first click the album and then the tag. If you want to find all the photos with a tag within a given time range, you can click the tag and then Find > Set Date Range.  But that won't work with albums -- clicking an album clears any date range, so you'll have to use Find > By Details, which is tedious.
But your high-level point still holds in PSE 7: Adobe designed albums and tags for different purposes, and albums aren't full citizens when it comes to search.
Interestingly, the last Adobe PSE survey asked several questions about albums, indicating that the product manager is aware that there is confusion in the product design betwen tags and albums.  I think Adobe has worked themselves into a corner: In PSE 6, they changed the name "collection" to "album" in an attempt to use a name that had more meaning to the typical user. But new users approach the product not knowing what tags are but thinking that they know what an "album" is, so of course they're going to use an "album", not a "tag".  And then they discover their organization is crippled by all the restrictions PSE places on albums.

  • Understanding File Import Images VS File Import Folders into a Project

    Hello,
When I select the "File>Import>Images" command, images go straight into my project, no album is created.
When when I use the "File>Import>Folders into a Project..." command on a folder containing subfolders, it will map the folder to a Project and subfolders to albums. OK.
However, when I use the "File>Import>Folders into a Project..." command on a folder with NO subfolders, images are put in an Album anyway. Why is that?
Is it possible to avoid the creation of an album and have images straight in the Project?
    Thanks,

You're right. Me alone is nothing. But if a high % of A2 users think like me, then maybe this feature needs some polishing.
The REALLY simple work around is to delete the album. The images won't go with it, and it's faster than retyping the name.
Good, that's the workaround I needed. For some reasons I was under the impression that deleting the album would delete the the images as well. I guess I'm still not used to that project-album concept.
You could hit Command + Delete on a hundred Projects and do less work than you've done on this one thread.
BTW: You submit feedback by choosing Aperture>> Provide Aperture Feedback not by posting it on a U2U forum. There are Apple moderators here but not Application Engineers.
Sure, that's how I always submit feedback to Apple.
    Thanks.
