Importing Footage DV/NTSC codec Hi Res into Final Cut Studio

A friend, computer wizard, figured out a way to capture dv footage hi res using a linux computer. (this enabled to captured 4 tapes at once). He used the DV/NTSC codec and we checked that all the settings matched final cut's settings.
The files play back in QT perfectly and QT identifies the codec as the same as FCStudios.
However, when importing these files into FC Studio, 2 oddities occur:
1. The files require rendering
2. Media manager is unable to recompress file to low res
any advice (besides capturing it all over using FC Studio)?
Thanks!

Hi-res?? DV NTSC is 720x480 with DV compression applied, period. There is no such thing as "hi-res" DV video.
If you have captured video at a high-definition frame size, with DV compression, then you have created some bizarre franken-codec, which may bear some similarities to DVCPRO 100, but is neither DV nor HD, nor anything that could be native to FCP, even if Quicktime is able to open or play it back.
If you are able to at least import to FCP, you are halfway there. chances are you are close. However, if the footage is not native, and you can't tweak the sequence settings to match your video, there is nothing you could do other than
1. fix whatever is wrong with the codec as it was captured, and recapture everything
2. re-export all the media to DV NTSC using FCPs batch export, or Compressor's Advanced Format Conversion
3. go ahead and edit with the non-native media and render, render, render.
Tell us what kind of info you see in the Movie Info window in QT Player. Capture a clip as DV NTSC with FCP and open the source file in QT Player and compare the movie info windows, you might be able to figure out what the difference is. I'm very curious about capturing 4 tapes at once on a single system.
Also, why would you be using Media Manager to down-res the clips?
This sounds very interesting, if a little confusing...

  • How to Import a MPEG-3-ts (Transport Stream) into Final Cut Pro ?

    Hello All;
I just bought Final Cut Studio and I am trying to figure out how to import some video footage that I captured using ArcSoft's totalMedia software via a HD HomeRun High Definition TV decoder. I have verified that the video is being saved in MPEG-2 Transport Stream format but I've tried everything but still can't import it into Final Cut Pro. I've purchased the MPEG 2 Quicktime component but then realized that it doesn't work with Transport Streams. Then I downloaded MPEG StreamClip for Mac which does play the clips on a Mac but I need to obtain the codec so I can import them into Final Cut Pro. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated. Thanks. Tim

    I do:
"You need to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the files to an editable format, such as those found in Final Cut Pro's Easy Setup menu.
For HD, your best choice is ProRes, DVCPro HD or Apple Intermediate Codec."
    And so does Nick.

  • How do i import movies from my iPad (movie cam) into final cut

I have imoported movies from the ipad into Iphoto. I couldn't get any videos to show up in the import browser from Ipad into Aperture. trying to import files directly from iphoto to final cut brings up an error message. exporting the videos from iphoto into another folder got them into final cut but the video doesnt play, the timeline just moves along a still image of the first frame of the video.

It's a bit confusing whether you are using iphoto or aperture as you mention both.
Are the movies still on your iPad? The best way to import would be to do it directly using FCPX. Attach the iPad, fire up FCPX, and import from camera (command-I). You should then see your clips that exist on the iPad and should be able to import them to an Event.

  • Importing an Adobe Premiere Pro CC file into Final Cut 7

I am a student working on a video project and I want to import a Premiere Pro file into Final Cut 7. Does anyone know how to do that? I use Premiere Pro at home, but my school uses Final Cut 7. I just want to finish my project at home and then get it into Final Cut 7 at school. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

You might be able to do this by exporting XML from PPro and then importing that into FCut
Otherwise, you should ask Final Cut questions in an Apple forum

  • 5.1 surround audio into Final Cut Studio out to AVI file with 5.1 surround?

Someone wants to give me a 5.1 surround sound audio file for importing into my Final Cut Studio project, then I export my video (now with 5.1 surround) out to an AVI file with the 5.1 surround sound intact. How do I do this?
    thanks

    I also have this problem...
Purchased an HD TV show (Nip/Tuck) and selected the alternate audio track labeled "Surround Audio" and got that digital audio "NOISE".
Regular audio sounds fine - can play iTunes music and system sounds sound good, just can't select the alternate "Surround" audio track without getting the noise.
I'm on an "older" MacMini - Intel CoreDuo using the SPDIF optical output into a Pioneer 5.1 receiver set to the appropriate Optical input and "Dolby Digital". I attempted to change the audio input processing on the receiver...all of which have the noise described by others...
Would LOVE a solution to this problem...

  • How to import footage to an external hard drive in Final cut pro X

I am having trouble importing footage from camera directly to an external hard drive in final cut pro X. When I go to import the footage, and select where I want it to be saved, my external drive is not even listed. It shows up fine on desktop and in final cut pro 7. I also unchecked the box in FCPX preferences of "copy files to final cut pro folder". Any advice is appreciated.

Nevermind, I hooked up my other external that is formatted Mac OS Extended that is used for time machine and FCPX recognized it fine. I guess I will have to reformat the MS-DOS harddrive to Mac OS extended as well.

  • Importing a m2v file, or a dvd into final cut

What the best (less compression on video only) way to import a movie of a dvd in final cut pro 5.0.4 and 5.1 . Will fcp import a m2v file. If any other software in involved, let me know. What the settings in the timeline set? Would it matter if the dvd was widescreen or 4:3 in the setting for sequences? Thankyou for reading this and any responces will be helpful.. E.

I am using the mpeg streamclip. for a 2 hour movie, and the export of hdv 60i, its taking over three hours and its at 60 percent. is that normal for the export setting? Also, i tried to rip the dvd staraight into the mpeg streamclip, but was having trouble. I had allready rip it in the m2v file and imported that into mpeg streamclip and it works. Is there a way i can skip that step and go directly in mpeg streamclip.

  • How to Install Alpha Transitions into Final Cut Studio?

I downloaded the Alpha Transitions and now have a folder on the desktop named Alpha Transitions that has sub-folders. How do I install them in Final Cut Studio? I couldn't find any instructions.
    Thanks for your help.

Since the transitions are just media, I keep them with the rest of my media used for editing; in a folder on my media drive.

  • Importing AVI and ProRes422 into Final Cut X

After finally thinking Final Cut X was ready, I upgraded only to discover a number of issues. Sony's Memory Recording Unit, which I've used to record .AVI videos imported these files directly into Final Cut Studio 7. This is not the case with Final Cut X.
I used Compressor 3 to turn these AVI files to Apple ProRes422 and played the converted videos on QuickTime player -no problem. When I import these ProRes422 files into Final Cut X (10.0.4) the audio does not import.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Tom,
I appreciate the thought that the audio is still compressed - maybe it is - I don't know. However, what I do know is this:
    1) Final Cut Studio 7 imported these AVI files directly and they worked without a problem.
    2) The .avi files are being generated using the Sony Memory Recording Unit - the recording unit used with Sony's professional line of camcorders (not your consumer camcorders).
    3) I used Apple's own Compressor 3 - using the DEFAULT settings for Apple ProRes 422 conversion and the converted product HAS AUDIO.
    4) Both the AVI and ProRes 422 mov files work in Quicktime Player - both audio and video
    - and -
    5) Final Cut X is supposed to be Apple's PROFESSIONAL replacement for the Professional Final Cut Studio 7.
If this was iMovie and the codec for the audio or video wasn't included in the application, well, it's free and I would understand. But, in this case, this is an expensive, professional product and it should include ALL CODECS (with some very minor exceptions for very, very odd codecs). AVI is NOT a minor exception - especially being generated by one of the MAJOR Professional Video Camcorder companies - Sony.
I'm hoping someone else has a better solution than converting, trying, failing, oh well....  NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Fix the product - include the Codec's - make it work!
If it works in Quicktime, it should, absolutely work in Final Cut X or any other professional video product that Apple produces. Simple.
    Anyone else with an answer?

  • Importing & Editing MPEG 4 into Final Cut 7

Is it possible to Import, Convert or Transfer an MPEG 4 into Final Cut to edit with?
If so, how? How fast does it take to convert to a FCP usable file?
I have a friend who shoots video and the file is an MPEG 4. I want to be able to Import it into FCP to edit. How can this be done in the quickest way possible?
    Thanks in advance.

Will I have to render the timeline everytime to see it when I play it back?
No. If you ever bring a file to the timeline and it needs to be rendered right away something is wrong. It seems this is what you found out when working with mp4. Your ProRes file won't have that problem.
When you bring a new clip to a new timeline, if the settings of the clip don't match the sequence FCP will ask you if you would like to match them. Choose yes.

  • IChat Video Recordings into Final Cut Express 4?

    Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions as for the best way to import iChat (Leopard) video recordings (320x240 pixels) into Final Cut Express 4? FCE says the file type isn't supported.
    Any help/suggestions much appreciated!
    Paul

That's an interesting idea, I may try it for my future attempts.
This time round, I've just booted up iMovie 06 HD and imported it as 'isight' and used that program to work with the iChat video.
I think this is one of the things I miss from working with low-end PC video editing software like VideoStudio - you could specify the input video parameters, whereas I believe you need to go all the way up to Final Cut Pro to do similar on the Mac!
