Importing footage from External Drive

I have about 3 hours of footage that was shot with a Sony PD-170 to a CitiDISK hard drive as QT files. I imported all the files and did the editing, now Premier crashes all the time. I am using Premier Pro CS3 by the way. I moved the folder with the QT files in it to another location so that I could relink the clips and that is not working either. I can get some of the clip relinked but then at some random point it will crash again and that project file will not open anymore. I have to open it up from a second save file that I was lucky enough to have made. It is not crashing on one particular file. Lets say that I get it to relink clip 1 - 10 and then it crashes on clip #11. The next time I open Premier I may get it to open clips 1-5 and it will crash on #6. I have done this tons of times trying several different methods to get premier to work and I cannot get it figured out. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks
Phil

I never had any problems with the QT files when editign with Avid. Premier is supposed to support QT so I was not worried about it.
I will try on the next project to shoot with either AVI or DV on the CitiDisk but that does not help me at the moment.
Has anyone else had similar problems when trying to import a bunch of clips that you did not capture with Premier from tape? I had similar problems with a HDV shoot that I trashed the Premier project before I got to far with it and edited in Avid...

  • LR has problem importing just from external drive

I am trying to import from an external drive into LR5.  From the import panel I select the external drive and for some reason it displays and checks (check mark) all photos on my internal drive as well as the photos on the external drive.  I remember when I first gone LR3 years ago I ran into the same issue and do not know what I did to resolve it.
As I am writing this I also tried just importing from a specific folder on my desktop and I get the same result.  It appears as though LR is scanning my entire Macintosh HD drive instead of just the selected folder or drive. LR currently shows 132000 (and climbing) images to be imported and I know the selected folder only has around 500 images.
    Any ideas?

Problem solved, for those that are interested or have this similar problem.  After a few days trying to import to lightrrom from an external drive, I finally discovered this issue.
Somehow several shortcuts to the Machintiosh HD (equivelent to C:drive in Windows) got tucked away inside several folders. When LR started scanning the drive for for images it finds the "Machitosh HD" shorcut and beggins scanning the intire internal drive for jpg, png, tiff, psd etc... Once I found the shortcuts, inside the random folders, and deleted them all was well in the world of LR importing.
So even though this external drive had nothing to do with the internal drive, the "Machintosh HD" linked LR to the internal drive for scanning.

  • Importing library from external drive on new computer

My hard drive recently crashed, received new one from mfgt. and sent old drive to have data extracted and put onto an external drive. I am trying to get my library onto new drive. Was able to get purchased off of Ipod. I tried going to file, import, clicked on itunes folder on external drive but nothing seems to happen. My itunes currently shows only what I have put on it from disk and what the purchased I was able to transfer from ipod. But in my documents folder it appears that my old library is there but doesn't show up when i open itunes.
    what am i doing wrong?

I actually just answered my own question. I had to import the XML file. It took awhile but I have a lot of music. It imported a few automatically generated playlists that I never had before (???) but I just deleted them. Everything is there!

  • Can't import library from External drive to new compueter.

I guess this could be more of a Windows 8 issue but maybe someone knows what I can do.  My old 2006 Macbook died and I just got a new Windows 8 laptop.  I had my iTunes library on an external drive (formatted in NTFS) because the Macbook had a tiny hard drive.  Anyway, this new laptop has big enough HD that I can copy my library directly to it.  The problem is, I can't...  I opened up two Windows Explorers, one with my old library, and another with the location of the new library.  It should let me just copy the contents from one folder to the other but for some reason it just won't.  I select all the files/folders, drag them over to the new location, and nothing happens.  I tried to copy/paste, both with the right-click menu, as well as keyboard shortcuts, and again nothing.  Not even an error message.  Why won't Windows let me copy the files?  Should I just open up iTunes and drag the files over that way or will that screw things up?  Please help!
    PS.  I'm using Windows 8 64-bit and iTunes 11.1.1.11

If this was used with your MacBook, Macs cannot write to NTFS drives.
So what was on the external drive? WHat do you mean by "library"? Which folders?
    Copy the entire /iTunes/ folder.
Why won't Windows let me copy the files?
    Dunno.
    It's not an iTunes issue.

  • How to import songs from external drive to itunes in Leopard?

my computer had issues after installing leopard and i had to erase everything on my computer. since all of my music files from itunes are on my external hard drive, they are safe! but now that i'm starting from scratch on my iBook, how do i tell the computer to import all my music files to my itunes?
i mean, i know how to click one song at a time and import them one at a time but that would take a long time. is there any easier way?
    thanks much

Its very easy. I hope that you have all your music in one folder. Just drag that folder which contains every music you have to the iTunes icon in the dock. iTunes will open and copy every file on its own.

  • Import wholesale from external drive?

I am a brand new Apple user, so forgive me for asking a couple of questions in sequence.
With the help of others on this forum, I now have my photo drive ready for import into aperture. I placed the aperture library onto the correct photo drive (per the video tutorial on aperture site). Now I just want to import
the photos (almost 60 gigs) and let aperture bring them all in at once -- importing the folder structure and keywords already written to the files. I cannot seem to do this. I see where I can do it folder by folder, but I am
missing a basic step on bringing my WHOLE set of images into aperture!
I thought I heard this could be done on the "Inside Aperture" podcast. (I cannot find the answer in the "Getting Started" manual on this.)
Can you help? Thanks in advance!

When you say, "start over" how does one do that? The thumbnail previews appear well on their way at this point.
I do have 8,000 images in one project folder right now. My folder structure is still there. I am hoping to create new project folders and drag and drop from there. And try to limit the size of the projects to less than 1000 images, as advised above.
But as I drag and drop, the size of the massive, original project is not reduced, and instead stays the same. Am I simply copying these images fron one project to another by dragging and dropping?
I probably need a long-dose of the manual. I appreciate your assistance though!

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

    Hi,
The Canon S100 wasn't supported until version 6.6 of camera raw and that isn't supported by pse 8.
You options are to either upgrade to pse version 10 or use the DNG converter

  • Best method of importing from external drive?

I have a 1T LaCie and want to know the best method to get those images into LR. The defaults are: "Add" and "NewPhotos" to "MyCatalog"
I think I may have more than one catalog and am not certain how to combine them. Is it best practice to have only one catalog?
    Thanks in advance,

  • How do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?

I have saved many photos to an external hard drive for security. I would like to store at least some of them in iCloud so I have direct access from Photos. Is this possible please?

how do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?
Just like you'd do it with iPhoto.  Drag the photos or folder of photos into the open Photos Library window or onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
If you have the iCloud Photo Library activated in Photos the new photos will be copied to the online iCloud Photo Library along with the rest of the photos in your library.  Remember, with the iCloud Photo Liberty it's all the photos or none.  You may have to purchase additional iCloud space to store all of your photos.

  • It is very difficult to import audio files from extern drives (NAS) into the new garageband

it is very difficult to import audio files from extern drives (NAS) into the new garageband.

Are you trying to open an audio file in GarageBand or a GarageBand project?
To open an audio file drag it from your NAS to a real-instrument track in GarageBand.
If you are trying to open a GarageBand project - can you open the same project, if you copy it to your system drive?
    Trying Google translate -

  • Importing Footage from Camera (Log and Capture)

I am importing footage from my camera onto FC. Now my laptop doesn't have nearly enough space to import all the footage, but I have an external HD with 500 GB which is more than enough. But when I press log and capture, it immediately takes up space on the computer. Is there a way to import the footage directly to the hard drive?
    thanks.

In Final Cut Pro, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > System Settings.
When the System Settings Pane opens, on the Scratch Disks Tab, you can deselect your system disk and select your external drive as the location for the media you are using. You need to deselect the system drive, not just add your external. When done, click OK. Any media you have already transferred to the system disk will still be available for use in the edit, this will direct FC to use your external as the media storage device from this point forward.
Your external drive should be connected to your computer via firewire or esata, USB (other than USB3) is not recommend for video work, and may give you performance issues.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive

I suddenly can't can't read iPhoto library from external drive. I have talked to WD and nohing is wrong with the network drive. I can open images and files from it. But, I can't read in iPhoto Library.

    Network Drive? a NAS?
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Basically, you need to move the library to a correctly formatted disk.

  • Why won't photos from external drive stay on my computer (iPhoto) once I disconnect the external drive?

I'm trying to move photos from my external drive to my new computer.  When I connect the external drive, I'm able to view all the photos in iPhoto, and I'm able to drag photos to a desktop folder and/or directly into iPhoto.  But, when I disconnect the external drive, I no longer have access to the photos on my computer.  I'm sure there's a step I may be overlooking but I'm using the same process I've used in the past and cannot determine next steps.

    Thanks so far.
    I'm currently working on a 2012 MacBook Air 13", running OSX 10.8.
Upon opening my external drive, I've dragged the iPhoto Library to my computer's desktop.  When I've opened iPhoto and tried to import the library (from external drive and/or from the desktop), I'm unable to do so, i.e., the library is not highlighted (it won't allow me to click on it).
I can open and view the library from my external drive in iPhoto when the external drive is connected to the computer.  But, once the external drive is disconnected from the computer, I'm unable to view the library
I've tried all of the aforementioned when the "Copy Imported Item(s) to the iPhoto Library" is checked.

  • Broken in Logic 9?: Reindex loops from external drive

Adding loops from an external drive in Logic 9 does not seem to work any longer. It used to work great in L8. Anyone have similar experiences? Know any work arounds? Is it a bug? If it's a bug I'll file it with Apple.
Previously in Logic 8 it was easy to reindex loops on an external drive:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L8 asks if you want to copy the loops or use them from their present location. Select present location intsead of copy locally.
    (5) L8 takes 5-20 minutes to build index of loops from external drive
I have tried this procedure several times in L9 without success. Instead I get the following:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L9 ask for my admin password.
    (5) Enter my password
    (6) I'm NOT asked if I want to copy loops locally or use them in their present location. Instead a reindex progress dialog comes up for 2 seconds then goes away.
    (7) In the end nothing happened. No loops copied, indexed, or anything
There is only one way I managed to get loops into L9 but it is exactly what I'm NOT looking for:
    (1) In the folder with all my loops spotlight search ".CAF" (In this case want to reindex Apple content which is all CAF)
    (2) Make sure to click "show more" at the bottom of the search results.
    (3) Drag the search results to the loop browser.
    (4) L9 indexes them all right, AND also copies them to my user library! All 30 GBs worth. Definitely not what I want.
In the end, I had to reinstall the Loops from the DVDs and specify an external location for them. (This whole mess got started when I tried to move the GarageBand and iLife loops to an external drive. The installer does not let you specify a location for them.)
Just so you know I've done some homework:
I've scoured other Logic forums and found these relevant threads that in the end did not solve the issue. They mostly seem to refer to Logic 8 which does not have this issue.

I just installed LP9 and all my loops and samples are on external drives. The drag and drop onto the browser method worked fine and I WAS given the option to move the files or not. The only exception to the above is Ultrabeat samples. They seem to want to be on the System drive.
