Importing footage from sony HDR-SR12 to External for later use in imovie?

Hi all, I have a question, I would like to save my movie footage which is on my sony HDR-SR12 to a external drive(G Raid1TB) so I can view and also import clips to imovie for making movie's later. I have partitioned the Ext HD 150gb for photos and 781gb for movie footage. Just out of curiosity I mounted my camera and pressed get info and the format on the sony camera is MS-Dos(fat32) does this matter at all?  Also which is the best way or how do I  import the footage from sony hdr-sr12 to the external Hd. I have never done this before so your help would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to mess up.
Thank You
Jess

I should have mentioned, it is a good idea to make an archive copy of your AVCHD footage before importing. You should be able to do this from the FILE menu in iMovie. This will preserve the AVCHD files exactly as they were on the camera.
When you import, you convert the AVCHD files (which are highly compressed) into Apple Intermediate Codec, which is suitable for editing.
If you want to make sure that your archive copy is working properly, you can import from your archive copy, rather than importing directly from the camera. This is a good way to make sure you have a good archive copy before erasing the video on the camera.

  • Importing video from Sony HDR-SR12 to Final Cut Express 4.0

I have an iMac (iMAC5,1), Intel core 2 duo, 2 GHz processor speed and 1 Gb memory. I have a new Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder. I attempted to import the video to my iMovie 07, but was unsuccessful. I also attempted to import this video to my Final Cut Express 4.0 but had no luck either. I have no trouble importing my photos from the camcorder to PC, why such an issue with the video? Is there something I can do? I have heard that HD video is not compatible with iMovie 07, but shouldn't it work with Final Cut Express 4.0 or is it my iMac hardware?

In short, none of the above.
iMovie '07 and FCE4 are both compatible with HD video, and so is your iMac. If you would like us to help, it would be nice to know your workflow. How are you attempting within FCE to import the footage? Provide us some details here to work with and maybe we can be of more help.

  • How do I import movies from sony HDR PJ200

How do I import movies from sony HDR PJ200?

hi, if your movies are recorded in AVCHD formats, they are not supported by iMovie so far. So, to make the conversion seems to be the best choice now. Except the brorsoft suggested by emmalucky, Video Mate also fits your mac well. IMovie accepted video formats includs .DV, .MOV, .MPEG-4, .M4V、H.264, .AIC. So, you can convert your movies to above video formats. Hope this help.

  • Problems with HDV footage from sony HDR - HC9

I have a new sony HDR-HC9 cam corder. I want to shoot in hi def (HDV) format for best quality, but I produce standard def DVDs as a finished product. I was hoping to use the built in iLink conversion from HDV to DV when downloading to the computer into iMovie. I have had many problems with this.
Usually, when I set it up to do the downconversion, I see a blue screen in iMovie, although iMovie will ff and rew the camera, no images come across. I experimented with setting the camera in DV record mode at the same time as I had the iLink down conversion set, and this appeared to work. I started downloading an hour tape, and when I came back 65minutes later (after it should have been done), saw the message that iMovie had quit. Reopened the project, and saw an hour worth of footage in the trash, but it was too crazy to reorder the clips from the trash back to the clips pane.
I resigned to import in hdv (1080i) format and not mess with hardware downconversion. This worked fine. I then added some chapter markers and shared the project with iDVD. I saved the project as an image file and then mounted it to check it for errors. The video was OK, but towards the end of the project, the sound was out of sync by a few seconds with the video.
I deleted encoded assets from the iDVD project, then reburned (save as image file). Same defect.
I then started a new iMovie project in standard DV widescreen, and dragged all of the clips from the HDV (1080i) project into the time line. It took over an hour for my mac mini to run the conversion, but the movie in iMovie appeared OK. I redid the iDVD project, and saved as image file. It appears to have worked correctly (although I have not looked at it on my widescreen TV yet to assess image quality.
    Questions:
    1) Has anyone had any luck getting HDR-HC9 iLink HDV-DV hardware conversion to work with iMovie, consistently?
    2) Can anyone comment on image quality issues with converting HDV to DV footage using iMovie software.
    3) Has anyone seen audio sync problems with iDVD from HDV original footage.
    Thanks

  • Can import 1080i from Sony HDR-HC7, but not export it

I am helping a friend with a Sony HDR-HC7 camcorder that is capable of DV and HDV formats. They have used it without a hitch with DV shot footage on import and export to the camera. They are using iMovie HD 6.0.3. They shot footage in 1080i format and imported and edited it, without incident, but have had no success exporting the edited project back to the camera. We've gone over the in-camera settings, manual in hand a few times, with no success. We have also phoned Sony on two occasions and basically got no help from them. Always using a firewire cable and camcorder mode and connection as when working with DV, but with connection and format settings changed to reflect the format. iMovie acts like it is going through it's paces and exporting, as we are asking it to, but nothing on the camera indicates we are getting anything from the computer, as the friend is used to seeing when they have worked with DV footage - no matter how long we wait or let it go through it's paces.
Any one with this camera with success exporting it back to the camera with iMovie HD 6.0.3?

I've got the same exact problem. The most frustrating thing is it worked once...iMovie 06 seemed to recognize the camera and just started capturing the footage. Now I cannot get it to connect for the life of me. I'm in VCR mode, I'm using a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable, ect - so frustrating.

  • How to import AVCHD from Sony HDR-UX1

Ok, little frustrating getting this to work but here's how it worked for me.
First you will need ReadDVD! from http://www.softarch.com/press/readdvdIntel1.htm ($50)
This will allow your mac to mount the mini-dvd in your camera. The disk is formatted utf 2.5 as far as I understand and osx cannot mount this drive correctly.
Connect your camera and using finder copy the whole BDMV folder from the camera to an external drive (i'm just using a generic usb drive). Now disconnect your external drive.
Open up iMovie and then reconnect your external drive - the import wizard now pops up and you can bring your clips in.
Note : If you have perian installed - disable it or iMovie will crash.
I'm using the Sony HDR-UX1 camcorder on an Intel MacBook with an external usb drive (fat32 formatted)
I hope this helps others with this type of camera. I'm just a mac beginner so unfortunately I probably can't help much if you run into problems.

    Hi James,
Can you tell us some more about your computer's hardware?
    What is you processor,
    How much RAM,
    HDD size,
What type of graphics adapter and how much memory is allocated, and whether that memory is shared or dedicated?
Are you running any other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, After Effects, or Audition at the same time?
I know that the System Requirements do not list Windows Vista Home Basic, but that's not to say you can't get it to run, and run fine, but the combination of factors could choke your system, especially if you are scrubbing HD video.

  • Importing video from Sony HDR-CX410 FCP 6.0.6 will not recognise AVCHD files. what is the solution?

First I have to admit I'm not technical in any way so I'm easily confused so please forgive me if my question sounds unprofessional.
The computer is a Mac desk top tower with Lion OS x 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with an  internal hard drive plus a number of remote hard drives.
I'm using Final cut pro 6.0.6 to edit video.
The question is, up until now I've been using material shot on mini DV tapes, then digitised into the computer via the camera. As this format is getting long in the tooth I decided to get one of the latest DVCAM cameras, I went for the Sony HDR-CX410.
It was not until I had purchased the camera & shot a few test seq. & then tried to down load into the computer that I found out that Final cut does not recognise the AVCHD files on the SD card.I've tried importing from the camera as well as a card reader with no result.
I've looked at a number of sites including Apple support community where it looks like this is a major issue for many people but I can't find anyone who is using the same camera. I wondered if this issue is something you have covered in the magazine, if so please let me know which copy, if not can you help in any way. It appears that Final cut proX may be able to translate the AVCHD files but I'm not sure. Am I right in thinking that if I do upgrade to FCPX I will still have to convert the files, if so would you recommend a suitable software program.  Is there any reason why Apple make it so difficult to edit this AVCHD format when all the latest cameras are using it, perhaps its time to change back to a PC?

    Eric,
FCP 6.0.2 (compared to previous version) comes with the latest improvement and support for AVCHD.
    However, here is a suggestion:
In Log&Transfer (top frame) on the right of *search field* there are three buttons, click on the one showing a little arrow-down and a sort of little star. Choose preferences then in the *transcode to* section click on those two tiny arrows pointing one up and the other down and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Can you now transfer? (Add selection to queue)
Once again 6.0.2 might provide better support for your camera.
Use the search tool for more info.
    G.
PS. Please note that some people have had problems with 6.0.2 so get us much info as you can before updating.

  • No longer able to import movies from Sony HDR-SR10

I have a Sony HDR-SR10 camera. I have previously been able to import videos from it to iMovie '08, but now I always get an error :
    *An Error Occurred During Import*
There was a problem importing 1 of 1 clips from your camera. Please review the imported movies carefully.
I can't think of anything which has changed since when I was able to import movies, except that I have upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Hi Winston, thanks for your answer. It's a bit worrying to hear about having to format the camera every now and then' I haven't formatted it since I bought it 18 months ago...
No, I don't have any other software that can convert the videos. Is there any free software which can do it?
I did try repairing the image database on the camera, but it didn't help.
I don't know if this is clear from my previous post, but none of the clips on the camera can be imported; it's not just some of them. There are hundreds of clips on the camera...
Sony have told me I should upgrade to iMovie '09; do you know if this is likely to help? Could the problem be caused by running iMovie '08 on Snow Leopard?
    Thanks for your help.

  • I'm having a problem importing AVCHD from Sony HDR-SR1 (into FCP)

I've gone through all of the posts, on this site, but I can't seem to find a solution.
I have one of the new Intel based mac pro boxes
The files are in a .mt2s format and they are currently sitting on my hard disk.
    - I can't import from the camera, directly, because it doesn't support firewire
    - FCP and iMovie both grey out files, with this extension, when trying to import them (as does MPEG Streamclip)
    - The log and transfer utility also shows the files greyed out (and nothing happens if I try to drag and drop them onto the utility)
    any assistance would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    John

My understanding was that you have to maintain the directory structure from the AVCHD source. Is the HDR-SR1 a supported camera?

  • How to import footage from Sony F55 to Premiere CS6?

I'm going to shoot a project on HD with a Sony F55 (not in 2k or 4k). My DoP has given me some test footage, but I am unable to import the footage into Premiere. Can it import native or do I need to download any additional elements?
    Thanks, Jason

Thanks. When I try and import the file, right now I just get a green blank screen when the clip comes up. (I have successfully loaded the plug-in). I just dragged and dropped the clip plus its supplementary files into the project, and is said that 3 of the supplementary files weren't compatible (one is .mxf.bmp and one is .BIM). The .mxf clip itself is what appears, but it is just blank. I'm wondering if I'm loading the clip wrong?

  • Im having problems importing footage from sony z1e to i movie 08

    any ideas??
    need it done now!!
im using a fire wire from the cam to the mac book pro, i movie is only showing the built in i sight and no sony z1
    HELPPPPPP please

I also use a pro level Sony Z5U with the slow mo ... it's sweet.  By the way, if you record a session over 10 to 12 minutes, most avchd cameras break up the MTS files into 2GB chunks or segments.  If you just bring them all in and try to stitch them back together you will end up with little gaps of around a half second where you put them together.  It disrupts an otherwise perfect video.  When you use clipwrap, you can select "Convert Multiple as Spanned" from its menu, and clipwrap will put them back together properly ... no gap.  Best wishes.

  • Can't import video from Sony HDR cx550v without video aliasing. Tried multiple settings in capture settings but doesn't seem to change log and transfer settings in FCS.

I tried importing into Imovie but it will only let me in Large format not Full. There has to be a way to import full 1920 x 1080/60i in Final Cut right?

Make sure you are watch your clip in QuickTime 7, not QuickTime X.
Open the file in QuickTime 7, and go to the menu QuickTime Player 7 > Preferences and make sure you have
Use high-quality video setting when available, and Enable Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility are checked.
When you view the clip in the Viewer in Final Cut Pro, you will generally see some degradation to the video unless you have the Viewer (and/or Canvas) set to display at 100% magnification. You may need to resize your windows if you set the viewer to that size.

  • IMovie '09 Won't Import HD Content from Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder

    Hi,
iMovie stopped importing HD content from Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. It only recognizes the standard definition content in the preview thumbnails. Previously this used to work with both a FireWire cable and a Mini USB. All of a sudden it doesn't import HD clips. There's no plugin failure either, because I reinstalled iMovie '09.
    System Specifications:
    Intel iMac 20" (Late 2008)
    Intel Core 2 Duo@ 2.4 GHz.
    4 GB RAM
    Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
    Thanks!

With this camera you must erase the SD clips from the camera before you can import the HD clips.
