Importing footage taken in widescreen

I'm importing a video that I shot on my camcorder in widescreen mode. I'm watching as it's importing and the image is compressed... will this problem disappear once it's finished importing (that is, will I only see it this way now but not when the video is in an iMovie)? Doesn't iMovie automatically make necessary adjustments?
Should I make things easier in the future by shooting in regular mode, not widescreen? My PowerBook is a 15" G4 w/SuperDrive. Thanks for any input!

Ok - I was impatient! My question has been answered because the tape has (finally) finished transfering to my laptop and yes, iMovie did automatically adjust the widescreen footage (it shows the black borders on top & bottom). Phew!
However, I am curious... do most of you choose to shoot videotape in widescreen (16:9), or, do you prefer to stick with the standard 4:3? My new camcorder (Canon Elura 100) defaults to Widescreen and I haven't bothered to toggle to 4:3 yet.

  • Best (quality) Setting for Importing Footage

    Hi,
    could anyone confirm which setting would be best to choose when importing footage from a DV camcorder? (i.e. to retain maximum quality);
    DV or 1080i etc. etc.

    Hi
I'm in the UK so PAL is the format used (although the footage was taken in America).
Not really the issue. Was Your material recorded on an American Camera (NTSC) or
a Camera bought in EU (PAL)
One can convert from one to the other by setting PAL/NTSC in iDVD at least - BUT THE QUALITY
    will be Very BAD !
(I don't think iMovie will import from other format - at least my SONY TRV-900e (PAL) can
playback NTSC - BUT not via FireWire to be imported into iMovie)
(There is a need of a NTSC Camera to be able to get it into iMovie)
    • Import in the format material was recorded
    • Use JES_Deinterlacer to convcert (free program on the net)
    • Start a new project in the new format and import the conveted material
As good as it can be - Pro applications exists to an astronomical cost and near
    not visibly quality enhancement.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Imported footage is vertically squished..help

I imported footage from an MPEG-4 file.
Once in imovie, the footage is vertically squished. The dimensions are off or something.
I have NO IDEA what to do. I am new to imovie.
    Thanks for you help

    Welcome to iMovie discussions robinopolis,
Was your footage shot in 4:3 or 16:9?
When you first create a movie project you are given a window to title your work. In that window you also can set the format from a drop down window, either DV, which is 4:3 like a regular TV shape, or DV Widescreen, which is 16:9 like a newer widescreen TV. You need to set that to conform to the video you plan to import.
MPEG4 will work in iMovie HD, but the preferred format is .dv from a miniDV camcorder, imported via firewire.

I realise you can you can delete them on your ipod slowly as you have to click on each one, and you can restore your ipod, but surely there is a way to get around this?

  • How to view timecodes on imported footage

I'm new to Imovie and need to view the timecodes on the footage i've imported to know where to edit. Can't seem to figure out how to get this to show up. Anybody know how?
    Thanks!

You can use these files, but the first time you open them in iMovie 09, they will be upgraded so they will no longer work in iMOvie 08. New cache and thumbnails files will be created.
It is probably not working now because, for performance reasons, iMovie 09 will not work with a network drive. There are workarounds involving symbolic links. But you still have to deal with the performance issue.
So, do you want these files to still work in iMovie 08?
    *If no...*
Simple drag and drop these Event Folders to a locally attached external drive that is formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). They should be placed in a folder called iMovie Events at the top level of the drive. Attach this drive to the computer with iMovie 09, and start iMovie 09.
Note: You could also move these files to your internal hard drive if you have plenty of room. In this case, they go in the Movies/iMovie Events folder.
    *if yes..*.
Attach a properly formatted external drive to the computer with iMovie 08. In the finder, copy (not move) the Event folders to folder named "iMovie Events" at the top level of the drive.
Also, if you have created projects from your imported footage (the events), and you want to port your projects to iMovie 09, it gets a little more complicated. Let me know.

  • Importing footage from JVC camera in FCP6

    Hi all,
I am working with a JVC Everio HD camera (I think it is the GZ-EX250).  I can't find a way to import footage directly into FCP6. It seems the only way to get the footage in there is to import it into iMovie (I have iMovie 8), then export it as a Quicktime, and then import the Quicktime into FCP. I've done this with footage that was shot using this camera in SD mode. My understanding is that if I want to shoot in HD that I'll havge to convert the footage before bringing it into iMovie. Seems like a pretty cumbersome process. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know how to import my HD footage from this camera directly into FCP6?
I hope my explanation makes enough sense for someone to give me a good answer. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks very much in advance!

MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz INtel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).

Great tutorial - easy to follow. I notice I only had two preferences listed for importing - there was no setting for Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) so I used Apple ProRes 422. Is the lack of choices because I'm using FCP6 not 7, or do the preferences get added as you hook up different cameras? At any rate, thanks for the help!

  • How to import footage to an external hard drive in Final cut pro X

I am having trouble importing footage from camera directly to an external hard drive in final cut pro X. When I go to import the footage, and select where I want it to be saved, my external drive is not even listed. It shows up fine on desktop and in final cut pro 7. I also unchecked the box in FCPX preferences of "copy files to final cut pro folder". Any advice is appreciated.

Nevermind, I hooked up my other external that is formatted Mac OS Extended that is used for time machine and FCPX recognized it fine. I guess I will have to reformat the MS-DOS harddrive to Mac OS extended as well.

  • How do I Import footage from Premier Pro CS3 to After Effects?

    Hi
As the subject says, how do I import footage from premier pro cs3 into after effects. I'm getting rather frustrated trying to figure this out.
Via copy & paste I can copy into after effects but this copys the whole of the track on the timeline, where as I just want 10 seconds copied. The 10 seconds I want to copy is a segment & was highlighted when I clicked copy.
Also when the full track gets copied, all my edits aren't copied & I get the raw track copied???
I've googled this, tried the "Add Dynamic Link" but all I want is to copy 10 seconds of footage from premier into after effects, add my effect & then copy it back, and I can't figure out how to do this simple thing
    Any help
    Thanks.

I am still not getting this.
I highlight the selection I want to copy into after effects. I copy & paste it & it pastes my entire footage without any off the edits I have made.
Having searched loads for this I can find no other answer than copy & paste.
Please please could you guy be more specific with your answers as I just can't figure this one?

  • Importing footage with audio

I am running a Mac Probook 2.0 with 1.5 gigs or Ram OS 10.48 Final cut Express 3.5 HD. I need to import footage from another source. I have been importing as mpeg 1 when I import to FCP i loose the audio, what format can I use to import into FCP that will also take the audio? I have the capablity to change the format prior to importing into FCP. anyone out there have any suggestionsa?

try using a program like MPEG Streamclip to transcode the clip before you import it ... best bet is to convert it to the native format of your timeline

You seem to be new to this software, so I highly recommend that you take some time to learn it using some great tutorials available online - it will pay off to invest the time, if you follow through, for example the great (and free) introductory tutorial at izzyvideo.com.
This is an amazing piece of software, and you'll have a lot to learn, but it's well worth it.

  • Importing footage results in blacked out clips with only lo-fi audio

    Hello,
I have iMovie '08 7.1.4 (585), and I'm running into some trouble importing footage from my Canon Vixia HF20.
I'm trying to import 1080i footage from a full drive (30 GBs or so), and after a "successful" import sequence, half of my clips are blacked out, with only a low sample rate stream of audio present from the clips.
I've done this import about five times now, in different configurations. The USB connection is directly to my iMac (3.06 GhHz w/ OS 10.6.2), and everything is straight forward. I just can't get iMovie to recognize the clips.
I've successfully imported footage before - it just seems like the sheer amount is throwing iMovie off. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I suspected that as well. I've tried manual and automatic importing, but not in smaller chunks. I'll give that a go in the future....
In the meantime, I read elsewhere of an individual who backs up his flash drive camera content as whole disk images, which then are imported to iMovie for editing. Sounds like he had better luck w/ a disk image - plus the use of disk space is a bit more in your favor, versus iMovie's archiving scheme...
I'll report back with my findings. Thanks for your suggestion.
