Importing Footage

Don't know if it matters at all, but figured it's better to check first..  ..in general, if I am using footage from 2-4 full DV tapes from a Mini-DV camera (of course putting all imported assets on a 2nd internal "E" drive), is it better (for Pro & Pro's performance I mean) to import the full 60-90 minute tapes into Pro & then create numerous subclips & edit using those, or is it better to just import the shorter clips as I need to use them from the DV tape?
Specifically, what I mean is: is one method better & 'easier' on Pro (CS4) & allow Pro to perform better, or not?  That's all.
Thanks!

Hi
I use ScLive to capture dv tape.
When I import a tape I actually get many files per tape...each file is a "scene" sorta...where the timecode on capture came into play..
In other words, when , during capture, it is detected that the camera was turned off and back on...that timecode indication...creates a new avi file for that portion of the tape.
Soooo, when I import to premiere I import the whole tape ( usually import the folder I made for that tape )...and all the files for that tape go into my project manager.
Then I import all the other tapes as well...same way...
Each tape is in it's own bin in the project manager ( imported folder becomes a bin )
Then I open a bin ( tape 1, for example ) and I put each file into the source manager to decide what I'm going to use...and bring down to the timeline those portions of the tape I want to use....but I usually don't make subclips...  I usually just make in out points in source monitor and bring that down.
That way, if I want to expand that portion to left or right I can do that on the timeline...I'm not confined to an absolute "cut portion ".
I put each tape in it's own sequence ...on timeline of each sequence..... the usable portions....
That in essence is a " print" for each tape...the usable portions ...in each sequence...
Then I make a new sequence and start bringing into THAT timeline the choices I make to begin editing and I call that a "roughcut" or something....
premiere can handle many tapes ( my last project had 6 ) ....with no problem...

  • How to view timecodes on imported footage

I'm new to Imovie and need to view the timecodes on the footage i've imported to know where to edit. Can't seem to figure out how to get this to show up. Anybody know how?
    Thanks!

You can use these files, but the first time you open them in iMovie 09, they will be upgraded so they will no longer work in iMOvie 08. New cache and thumbnails files will be created.
It is probably not working now because, for performance reasons, iMovie 09 will not work with a network drive. There are workarounds involving symbolic links. But you still have to deal with the performance issue.
So, do you want these files to still work in iMovie 08?
    *If no...*
Simple drag and drop these Event Folders to a locally attached external drive that is formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). They should be placed in a folder called iMovie Events at the top level of the drive. Attach this drive to the computer with iMovie 09, and start iMovie 09.
Note: You could also move these files to your internal hard drive if you have plenty of room. In this case, they go in the Movies/iMovie Events folder.
    *if yes..*.
Attach a properly formatted external drive to the computer with iMovie 08. In the finder, copy (not move) the Event folders to folder named "iMovie Events" at the top level of the drive.
Also, if you have created projects from your imported footage (the events), and you want to port your projects to iMovie 09, it gets a little more complicated. Let me know.

  • Importing footage from JVC camera in FCP6

    Hi all,
I am working with a JVC Everio HD camera (I think it is the GZ-EX250).  I can't find a way to import footage directly into FCP6. It seems the only way to get the footage in there is to import it into iMovie (I have iMovie 8), then export it as a Quicktime, and then import the Quicktime into FCP. I've done this with footage that was shot using this camera in SD mode. My understanding is that if I want to shoot in HD that I'll havge to convert the footage before bringing it into iMovie. Seems like a pretty cumbersome process. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know how to import my HD footage from this camera directly into FCP6?
I hope my explanation makes enough sense for someone to give me a good answer. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks very much in advance!

MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz INtel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).

Great tutorial - easy to follow. I notice I only had two preferences listed for importing - there was no setting for Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) so I used Apple ProRes 422. Is the lack of choices because I'm using FCP6 not 7, or do the preferences get added as you hook up different cameras? At any rate, thanks for the help!

    Hi,
      1. Make sure you have the camera connected via Firewire (i link)
    2. The Camera is turned to "play" and, if you are capturing HDV,  in the camera menu, it is set to i link "OFF"

  • How to import footage to an external hard drive in Final cut pro X

I am having trouble importing footage from camera directly to an external hard drive in final cut pro X. When I go to import the footage, and select where I want it to be saved, my external drive is not even listed. It shows up fine on desktop and in final cut pro 7. I also unchecked the box in FCPX preferences of "copy files to final cut pro folder". Any advice is appreciated.

Nevermind, I hooked up my other external that is formatted Mac OS Extended that is used for time machine and FCPX recognized it fine. I guess I will have to reformat the MS-DOS harddrive to Mac OS extended as well.

  • How do I Import footage from Premier Pro CS3 to After Effects?

    Hi
As the subject says, how do I import footage from premier pro cs3 into after effects. I'm getting rather frustrated trying to figure this out.
Via copy & paste I can copy into after effects but this copys the whole of the track on the timeline, where as I just want 10 seconds copied. The 10 seconds I want to copy is a segment & was highlighted when I clicked copy.
Also when the full track gets copied, all my edits aren't copied & I get the raw track copied???
I've googled this, tried the "Add Dynamic Link" but all I want is to copy 10 seconds of footage from premier into after effects, add my effect & then copy it back, and I can't figure out how to do this simple thing
    Any help
    Thanks.

I am still not getting this.
I highlight the selection I want to copy into after effects. I copy & paste it & it pastes my entire footage without any off the edits I have made.
Having searched loads for this I can find no other answer than copy & paste.
Please please could you guy be more specific with your answers as I just can't figure this one?

  • Importing footage with audio

I am running a Mac Probook 2.0 with 1.5 gigs or Ram OS 10.48 Final cut Express 3.5 HD. I need to import footage from another source. I have been importing as mpeg 1 when I import to FCP i loose the audio, what format can I use to import into FCP that will also take the audio? I have the capablity to change the format prior to importing into FCP. anyone out there have any suggestionsa?

try using a program like MPEG Streamclip to transcode the clip before you import it ... best bet is to convert it to the native format of your timeline

You seem to be new to this software, so I highly recommend that you take some time to learn it using some great tutorials available online - it will pay off to invest the time, if you follow through, for example the great (and free) introductory tutorial at izzyvideo.com.
This is an amazing piece of software, and you'll have a lot to learn, but it's well worth it.

i have a solution for import and read any files
its a problem with the 8.2 and last version of premiere and setting on the cloud
in premiere you desactivate on the preference the synchronisation with adobe cloud (all)
and after you go on you os c/ user/ appdata / adobe / premiere / roaming  / 8.0 you cancel all the file and after you restart adobe
for me is ok - but for the moment i don't have the possibility to export in h264 ?

  • Importing footage results in blacked out clips with only lo-fi audio

    Hello,
I have iMovie '08 7.1.4 (585), and I'm running into some trouble importing footage from my Canon Vixia HF20.
I'm trying to import 1080i footage from a full drive (30 GBs or so), and after a "successful" import sequence, half of my clips are blacked out, with only a low sample rate stream of audio present from the clips.
I've done this import about five times now, in different configurations. The USB connection is directly to my iMac (3.06 GhHz w/ OS 10.6.2), and everything is straight forward. I just can't get iMovie to recognize the clips.
I've successfully imported footage before - it just seems like the sheer amount is throwing iMovie off. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I suspected that as well. I've tried manual and automatic importing, but not in smaller chunks. I'll give that a go in the future....
In the meantime, I read elsewhere of an individual who backs up his flash drive camera content as whole disk images, which then are imported to iMovie for editing. Sounds like he had better luck w/ a disk image - plus the use of disk space is a bit more in your favor, versus iMovie's archiving scheme...
I'll report back with my findings. Thanks for your suggestion.

  • How to use iMovie 08 imported footage on another computer in iMovie 09?

I had to import quite a lot of video from tape and had only firewire 400 cable so did it on a Mac running iMovie 08.
Now, how can I move the imported data to another computer using iMovie 09?
When I open iMovie 09, I can see the disk on the other computer (over the LAN) but how can I get iMovie 09 to recognise and use the data that iMovie 08 has imported?

  • Premiere Pro CC crashing when I request to import footage

I'm working on a currently updated version of Premier Pro CC on a mac pro. I am trying to import h.264 .mov files shot on a 5d mkiii
I try to import footage using several methods, (finder drag and drop), left click--> import--> files
any time I try either of these my premiere automatically gets the spinning wheel of death and then shortly after says it's not responding.
any suggestions on why this is happening?
I can provide any answers about my computer hardware/ software if needed.

  • Trouble reading imported footage

I'm having trouble working with imported footage in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. The clip just shows a white screen and the audio is there. How can I view and work with the footage?
    Here are the Codecs:
XDCAM EX 720p24 (35 Mb/s VBR), Integer (Big Endian), Timecode
    Original Format: MPEG HD

Support for the XDCAM EX format didn't arrive until FCP 6.0.2. That's when the codecs for that became available to FCP. FCP 5.1.4 doesn't have those codecs, so it cannot view the software. You either need to upgrade (great time to, $300 is all it takes) or purchase a decoder from Calibrated Software.
