Importing from a camcorder that writes to DVDs

Hello,
I'm trying to import from a Sony Handycam that writes to DVD and not mini DV tapes. Plus I only have a USB cable to connect to my computer. Is there any way to make this work without mini DV tapes or firewire??
Thanks

Hi
Does Your Camera have FireWire out then this is the easiest way - but if it works with a DVD Camera
is another thing. Doubting.
A. don't put a mini DVD into Your iMac or iBook or PowerBook. You need a trayloaded DVD to do this.
B. Read what Karsten collected:

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and
made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member
QuicktimeKirk stated: I use the analogy of the old Polaroid
"instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and
show it off. ..
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in
recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
• DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
• Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
• VisualHub (23.32$)
• Cinematize >60$
• Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
• Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
• connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
• Drop2DV (free) a free tool claiming to convert DVDs into dv-stream...
• Use iSquint for your conversions : www.iSquint.org

  • Import from a camera that contains mts files

what is the required file structure for FCE to import from a camera that contains mts files

The file structure is provided/created automatically by the camera....
So if you still have the original structure, then you should be fine, but you may need to install software for log and transfer from the camera manufacturer...
If you just have the individual mts file, you are SOL as far as log and transfer goes. In that case you need to purchase ClipWrap2 to convert to Pro Res....
Not sure how this all works with FC Express though...

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!

  • Import from sony camcorder

hi, i have a sony HD camcorder (HDR-350E) which isn't supported by FCE, but is by iMovie. So I imported my clips using iMovie, then dragged the files onto the project browser window in FCE. Is that the best way to import from iMovie? Or should I be doing it in some other way?
    Thanks

  • HT3775 How do I obtain audio on mpg files imported from my camcorder to iMovie'11 version 9.0.6?

I've previously been able to import from my Sony camcorder with no audio issues (as recently as June), but for some reason my last import is mute. Playing from the camera the audio is clear but when imported into iMovie all the footage is there, just no audio.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hey Yvo1.
You'll get a better response to your question if you go to the iMovie Discussions. Most people who come here don't work with iMovie all that much.
    Good luck.

  • Importing from my camcorder using USB port

How do I import using a camcorder with a USB connection not a firewire. I cannot seem to work this out. Help!

iDvd'08 will operate perfectly via a Firewire connection (which is the preferred approach for most macs) if for example you wish make a One Step DVD or a Magic DVD. There's a significant difference between these two processes which I won't go into here unless requested to do so.
But if you wish to import video using a USB2 cable, then you have to back up one step to iMovie'08 and here's how you'd perform such a task:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/10331.html
In other words USB2 camcorder connectivity is added to the video editing app of iLife'08 and that's where one should start the video editing process. Look into camcorder support for i-apps here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1014
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#tutorial=camcorder
iDvd on the other hand has always been an authoring tool for DVD's mainly.
Hope this solves your question but if not, just come on back. Good luck!

  • How do I find images in LR 2.4 (imported from CS4 Bridge) that have color labels already assigned In CS4 Bridge? I have set both Bridge and LR color labels text to match (eg Green for green, etc).

How do you find images in LR 2.4 that have been imported from CS4 Bridge and have been assigned a color label in Bridge?  I have set both LR 2.4 and my CS4 Bridge to match the text for each color to be the same (eg. Green for green, etc), and the filter search in LR 2.4 shows that a label has been assigned, but I am unable to identify and locate the specific images in LR 2.4 that have had a color label assigned from CS4 Bridge.  I have tried to search via attribute, metadata, text, etc...Is it necessary to re-assign color labels all over again, image by image, in LR 2.4, or is there a way to automatically have the color labels assigned in CS4 Bridge be assigned and searchable to the images after they have been imported into the LR 2.4 catalogue from the Bridge program?

    JohnM.
I closed both programs and re-imported photos and re-tried the action of having LR  read the XMP metadata from the CS4 files, and it seems to work now just fine...don't know why now and not before, but thanks much. Is there a way to have LR do this automatically upon import of images from CS4?  I tried to do this with an import metadata preset, but no luck.  It seems as if I can only do this once the images have already been imported into LR, and then to have to have LR read the metadata from the CS4 Bridge files.  thanks gain.

  • No picture appears in window when importing from HD camcorder.

I've used iMovie 8 several times, importing from the same camera and for some reason now, when I'm trying to import, the video picture is not showing in the import screen - only on the camera. I've checked all connections and settings, and still no picture. I can click "import" and camera will start playing, but clearly no video is being imported because if I stop and click "done", there is nothing in my Event Library. Suggestions??

Same problem with Sony camcorder. All the forums say it is an issue with 9.0.6 and to downgrade to 9.0.4. Trouble is I have no disk and new iMac. Shipped with 9.0.6 so can't use time capsule. Called apple and they told me to download the drivers, this was not sucessful. Any one got a copy of 9.0.4?

  • Can't import from my camcorder into iMovie

I have a SonyHDR-XR150E camcorder but imovie will not import video when I've connected it to the computer.

One thing to double-check when you connect the camera to the Macintosh is to always strictly follow these best practices.
Get the power adapter for the camera, plug it into the Mains, plug the camera into the adapter
    Reboot the Macintosh
Power on the camera, place it into Playback/VCR mode
Connect the camera to the Mac using the USB cable supplied by Sony
    Launch iMovie
Go File Menu > Import from Camera and see if it recognizes the camera
These aren't hard and fast rules, but a way to help troubleshoot where in the chain of events things may be going wrong.

  • Sound missing on some files after import from DV camcorder

    Hi everyone,
As a new user to Macs grateful if you can help.
When importing to imovie 08 from a DV tape, some clips go fine, others are then missing the audio. Also some clips have audio and playback OK initially, then have audio missing after closing and re-opening imovie. Is this a bug? What should I do? Many thanks

    Hi,
I had a simular problem. To solve it I went about 5 seconds into the footage and started importing from that point, not the start of the tape.
What caused the prob? My only guess is the tape I was using was fairly used and right at the start of my tape I had some old footage for less than a second. When the new footage kicked in the sound went.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to import from a disk that is a cd/dvd combo

I have a cd that is a cd/dvd combo. I am trying to import only the audio portion of the cd but am not able to. Itunes will not recognize the audio portion of it. Windows media player will only play the dvd portion.

Look on the disc's case, on the back. See if it has any wording about copy-protection. Some of those combo deals are set up so you can't rip them. In which case I would return it to the store and let the artist/label company know you aren't happy with not being able to put it on an ipod.
I had one of those a few years back and I couldn't get my XP machine to rip it, but it worked OK on a Mac.

  • Imovie 10.0.3 won't import from a camera that doesn't have a tape

I am using iMovie 10.0.3 and am trying to import live video from my canon gl2 camcorder without having to use a tape.  iMovie will capture just fine but only as long as there is a tape in the camera and the camera is recording.  If I play pre-recorded tapes to iMovie it records ok as well.  I've been using this camera to my macbook pro (2011) and using iMovie without having a tape in the camera.

You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Video import from PAL camcorder

I have just bought a Canopus ADVC110 which converts analog video to digital and have it hooked into my Powerbook Pro via a firewire lead.
I have my analog PAL camcorder tied into the canopus and am attempting to import some PAL video but not getting very far.
I fire up iMovie and it does indeed detect the camera but when I create a new project it appears as DV-NTSC and not DV-PAL. I have changed the 'New Project frame rate' preference from 29.97 to 25 but still no good. When I click on Import I get the video/audio but the video is VERY jumpy and in black and white and the audio is totally garbled. As the video is PAL and the project says DV-NTSC this might be the issue? I would have thought that the Canopus would remove any PAL/NTSC issues as it is being converted to digital anyway? I don't know how to change the new project from DV-NTSC to DV-PAL, again I thought switching frame rate to 25 would have done this?
So, can anyone help me get a smooth video import onto the Apple? I dont care what resulting file format is as long as I can import and play it. I don't mind buying a different video application if necessary and do have Toast Titanium if that helps.
    Many thanks,

It sounds like you may not have set the dip switches of the Canopus correctly to PAL.
See page 16 of instruction manual for the canopus ADVC110!
    (I use the same one)

  • My Mac was upgraded to Snow Leopard. iMovie now have problems importing from SONY camcorder.

This is the first time I hooked up my camcorder since the upgrade.  iMovies shows my videocan with an excalamation mark inside a yellow diamond and bogs down completely.  What is wrong?  I have iLife 2011.  Is there a setting that I missed?

    {quote}Has anyone else had problems importing with this specific model or a related model and if so were you able to fix the problem or find a work around? I guess I could transfer the old Sony movies to my new Canon GL2 and then import into the iMac but that kind of defeats the purpose as I have been repeatedly told how simple and intuitive it is to do things on the iMac.{quote}
I don't have the Sony, but for older tape camcorder's I use a standard DVD recorder and burn the movie to DVD then use [HandBrake|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21117] to convert to MPEG-4 for importing to iMovie.

  • IMovie 5 quit while importing from DV camcorder

It never happened until I upgraded to iMovie 5. I would import a DV movie clip from my SONY Cam. The movie runs smoothly while playing but it jitters as soon as I start importing the clips. The camera runs for a while and the 1st 10 secs. movie was captured and it starts jittering before it stop completely.
I am tempted to uninstall the 5 version. As I cannot reinstall the version 4 now. What is happening would someone please tell me what to do. I need this working as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

    Hi P.O.
Hard to say but cheque this list:
    a) File-Vault is on - turn it off
    b) don’t Daisy chain camcorder - external hard disk - Mac
    c) Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
    d) Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
    e) Bad RAM-chips
    f) drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
    g) FW-wire cable OK?
    h) Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is prerecorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
    i) defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC !
    j) remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    k) Do You have desktop pictures or screen-savers active? Try turning them off.
    l) Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good)
OS X.4.0-3 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
    m) Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first)
QT v.7 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
    n)
Have you tried the crazy fix:
Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now.
    Sue/SDillini
    o) Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    I use OS X.3.9 , QT 6.5.2 and iMovie 5.0.2
Also You can run repair permissions - Apple Disk util tool.
