Importing from a Canon XA10

I have a Canon XA10 and am shooting in 1080/25p (European model), which is recorded by Canon in a 50i stream. I believe the 25p is actually 25psf. When I import into FCP X and move a clip into a project, the system says I have 1080i HD 25i Stereo. The only option I have is to change it to 25p. Would 25p be correct, or should it have been 50i which does not appear as an option for this footage.

Your 25P mode is different from your 25PF mode. They are very different. I have the HF G10 which is identical in practically all respects except for XLR connections, handle and a few controls. You have a 25PF mode that is packed into the 50 frame format, but it is not native mode to the sensor. Your 25P mode is native. I am on the 30P, 24P, 60i format, but yours should work the same. I read in my 30PF format all the time in FCP X without problems through the Import from Camera.
If you want the best progressive mode your camera has, then use the 25P. Some control modes, however, no longer apply when using this mode. By the way, I also use 30PF all the time and have never paid attention to what FCP X tells me about it ... it works great for all I do. 24PF is not quite as good as native 24P (my version of camera), but practically identical to most eyes. How do I import clips from my Canon XA10 at the BEST QUALITY

I recently purchased a Canon XA10 - I usually use a Canon 7D (where I use MPEG Stream Clip to convert all clips to Apple Pro Res 422)
When I attempt to "log and transfer" footage from the Canon XA10 - it seems to be importing the footage as Apple Pro Res, but the quality doesn't look HD and is super interlaced...
Is the footage from the camera just crap - or is there a better method to capture footage at a higher quality?

You should see a difference when you switch formats. Try shooting at the highest quality setting, MXP and see the results.
It looks from the specs published on the Canon web site that you have a frame rate choice of 60i, recorded at 60i; 24p recorded at 24p; 24p recorded at 60i, or 30p recorded at 60i.
The frame rate you choose to work with would be up to you. It would be an aesthetic decision, or it could be guided by the frame rate of existing footage you might be working with.
There is nothing inherently wrong with interlaced material, you just need to work with it correctly.
A good rule of thumb is to edit in the format you have shot, then use Compressor to make the output in format you need to deliver.

I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine. Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

Unable to Import from my Canon DC220 camcorder...

I had begun a project with I-movie 6 of which my camcorder was not compatible with...my solution was to upgrade to I-Movie 08 of which the Canon DC220 is compatible with and I-Movie should import from (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171). Unfortunately, when I plug my Camcorder into the USB and switch it to PC/Computer mode, I get a pop up on the screen stating that I "inserted a Blank DVD" and gives me a few options on how to proceed. I did try to use other USB ports on the Mac...nothing. I did try a couple different DVDs of which I recorded on...nothing. So I was able to eliminate the problem being with the DVD or the USB port I was using. Please advise as I am at a loss. Thanks so much.

Unplug your USB cable and then press func. to enter the menu on your camera.
plug in your cameras power supply. Then select Finalize. This will close the disc and prepare it for importing.
I'm still having trouble, but this is a step you must follow.

Import from camera canon legria HV videos to imovie ?

I would like to import from my camera canon legria HV videos to imovie, but my macbook air is not recognizing my camera, i go out from my camera with firewire and go in the macbook air by usb. My camera is on and the tape is on "Play" .
Is the problem, that i go in by USB ?

looking at one of my files format is
Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Right, 48.000 kHz
So it seems that imovie re-packed my movies to mov but keeping MPeg2 as video codec.
Then I don't understand the point of this. If the codec used is still MPEG2
why not just the file as it is ?
What I don't like is that import / export take times even when it is (seems) useless.
I used to use tools like VLC and avidemux to do some change on the video.
but it is now impossible as they won't be able to open the mov files
anyway, If I understand valuable replies from both of you I have no other choice.

Import from camera (Canon XHA1) in FCPX

When I try to import footage from tape on a Canon XHA1 connected with firewire, it doesn't work, only the webcam appears as an option.
(I already changed the PLAYBACK STD to HDV andHD DOWN-CONV to OFF)

yes, there is a loss; iMovie converts to AppleIntermediate, which is versatile but not as good as FCPX' prores.

Prolems wih importing from a Canon ZR 45

I have been importing DV into various verions of iMovie for several year from my little ZR-45. For the most part, performance has always been great.
However, for the last 6 months, or so, I have experienced problems. I am no longer able to control my camcorder from the iMovie program for importing program material from tapes. Several months ago it began to do this and I found that I could work around the problem by hitting the icon for "import" on the screen and then follow with manually starting the camera to play the program into iMovie.
Then the problems became worse. First, I was having problems with iMovie only importing a few minutes and stopping. Sometimes, I had to start importing a number of times to finally get the material into my computer.
Today, I haven't been able even get by with the manual "work-around". iMovie will not import at all.
I have always up-graded iMovie as sussessive versions came out. So, I have to ask: Are these latest versions of iMovie too advanced, and no longer compatable with my ZR-45? Or, is there some setting that I might not have right causing the problems. I've tried to find settings to change this perfrmance, but with no success.
Currently, I just can't import. Also, I find that I can't import tothe current version of FCE. This sort of causes me to have doubts concerning teh performance of my camcoder.

I am having the exact same problems importing from my Sony HDV Camera. It is my understanding that about 6 months ago when I (and you) upgraded to a newer version of iMovie it screwed something up in the system. I spent 2 hours on the phone with 4 different mac service reps about 4 months ago trying to get help but they kept blaming my brand new $2000 Sony Camera. I heard there is a patch that will fix this, but I haven't found it. Will you please let me know if you find the solution. It is driving me crazy. Thanks

When I try to import photos from my camera to my iphoto I get told that a certain number of photos couldnt be uploaded. It happens every times. I have a canon 300d. Please help! Need those photos.

Importing from a Canon GL2 Camcorder

This problem did not exist with previous versions of iMovie, but it is ubiquituous now. Here's what happens: 1) the camera is connected via Firewire and then turned on; 2) iMovie is then started, and the button is moved from the scissor icon to the camera icon; 3) and this is where the problems begin . . . and they are one of several: 1) the screen turns blue and says Camera Connected. It will then flicker to Camera Ready to Record, then back to Camera Connected, then the screen goes to black, and then it will not import. After 90 minutes with Apple support working with disconnecting peripherals, etc., a work-around was suggested . . . press play on the camera, then press Import on the screen. Tried this, and it started importing, but then the screen would turn blue and Camera Playing term would show intermittently, causing drop-puts in the replayed clips. Apple Support also suggested that it may be that iMovie cannot control the Canon GL2, but I never had this problem in previous iMovie versions. Anybody having similar issues?

◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.

All of a sudden LR5.5 will not import from my Canon Cameras???

5d MKII, 60D or EOS M... Everything is up to date and it makes no sense to me? Sometimes it will download 2 pics, 5 pics or 7 pics and then freeze... Outcome is always the same. It states it cannot read files. Sometimes it says there are no files and does not display them for import at all. I can use Canon software like EOS Utility and even Windows 7 will import them with no problem. What's the deal with Adobe? I say Adobe in general, because once the issue started with Lightroom I tried using Adobe Bridge, same exact issues. I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times. I have even installed Lightroom on my laptop and my son's PC with the same results... Any ideas???

You need to check the 'Write' permissions of the folder you are asking LR to use (or create) in the Import module's 'Destination' right-side panel. Step 1 is to determine WHERE that folder is located (or being created) and then read this LR post on the same subject to properly enable Write permissions:

Under Sequence Settings and the Advanced tab, should I leave the Compressor Quality tab at HIGH or BEST? I have heard that it's best to keep it at High but I just wanted to make sure of it. Also, since the Canon XL2 is a progressive scan camera (right?) should I lave the Scan Mode to INTERLACED or PROGRESSIVE and should I leave the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 even though I am shooting in 16:9? Thanks so much for your help.

You recorded DV/NTSC 16:9 Anamorphic (or DV/PAL depending on where you live)
That's what your Easy preset settings should be.
And no, the camera does not record progressive. It records 29.97 interlaced - like all DV cams recording to tape do. If the setting said 24fps, the camera inserted pull down in the 29.97 image stream. Unless you need to go back to film, simply edit the material in a 29.97 timeline.

Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality. Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.

Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?

FCP X freezes and must force quit? I have a FCP installed on a Mac Mini (4 gig memory) and Lion OS. The import files are large ACVHD files from a Canon G10 camera. FCPX freezes and requires a force quit. Is anyone else having these problems?

I am using FCP X on both a MacMini (10.7 with 4 Gig memory) and an iMac (10.6 with 4 gig memory). The files are ACVHD files imported from a Canon G10 camcorder. FCP is constantly freezing and requiring a forced quit. Could it be that FCP X was not tested thoroughly for use on a Mac Mini?

I think it's safe to say that FCPX wasn't tested throroughly for use on anything.
with that out of the way, there are many variables as to what might cause your problems, but I don't think it's the mac mini as long as it meets the specified minimum requirements (especially the graphics card).
You might try creating a camera archive first and then importing from that.
The other issue might be the file format itself; you might need to use Clipwrap first. Maybe someone who has the same camera can chime in.

No import from Canon Rebel XT camera to iPhoto

iPhoto 6 fails to import from my Canon Rebel XT. Nothing happens. I've tried every suggestion I can find on the Apple and Canon sites, and I'm stymied. Canon's said to reinstall their Solution Disk, so I did that. Also needed a EOS Utility upgrade download. The battery in my camera is fully charged. I've followed all the directions I can find! I'm not particularly computer literate--maybe you can tell. I thought this would be easy, but I've spent half a day on it already!

Is the camera set to 'PC connection' in the last (5th) menu in the camera settings. That should do the trick. Another option is to get an inexpensive USB 2.0 card reader. That will work really well also and import the images much faster. Then you just remove the card and put it in the reader when you want to download your images.
