Importing from burned DVDs

Hi,
I'm about to buy a Canopus ADVC300 to import old VHS home movies into FCE, but I'd also like to import footage from some full length burned DVDs so that I can add effects, titling etc. (They're school plays, so no copyright protections, etc.) Can I also use that device to import the DVDs? I'm not sure if it will work since the DVDs are technically already digital, but I'd like to be able to use the Canopus to clean up the inevitably shakiness and bad audio quality. Will this work? Can I just plug my DVD player into the Canopus the way I would a VCR? Is there a better solution that will maintain/clean up the quality?
Thanks!

Yes, you can plug your DVD player into the ADVC-300 just the same as your VCR.
An alternative which will be faster is MPEG Streamclip to directly convert the DVD video to DV or AIC for editing in Final Cut. MPEG Streamclip is free and exellent. However you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component from Apple ($19.99) if you don't already have it installed on your Mac. (The conversion is faster because the ADVC works in real time as you play back the video on the VCR or DVD player; MPEG Streamclip can directly convert the video and audio from the files on the DVD).

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

  • Importing a burned dvd

My brother bought a tv episode on itunes and wanted to show it to me when he was visiting. However, when I try to import it in to my itunes (from a dvd he burned), it doesn't work. I get the message that I have to authorize my computer but when I enter either of our passwords, it doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?

What is the best way to import from a DVD that has been burned with IDVD, etc.
There are a number of possibilities. If quality is not an issue and you want something simple, you could use an application like HandBrake (free) to convert the files directly to MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC files which can be imported into iMovie '08.
On the other hand, since your iDVD files are not encrypted, you can copy the VIDEO_TS folder (or simply the major, non-zero VOB files) to your hard drive. A number of third-party MPEG based applications can then convert the files to "high-quality" compression formats which iMovie '08 can use. These higher quality codecs will not really improve the quality of your original DVD content but may prevent further loss of quality as when using high compression codecs like MPEG4 or H.264. The files produced can be rather large -- i.e., on the same order of using you DAC to import DV compressed files. In any case, my application of preference would be MPEG Streamclip (free). Unfortunately, this application requires you to have the QT MPEG-2 Player component ($19.99) installed.

  • Import from a DVD

Everytime that i put a DVD in the player opens and won't let me do anything else. I want to import from the DVD. There are no chapters on this particular DVD which was copied from a 60 min minidv tape

in your System Preferences, you can set, what your Mac should do when inserting a CD/DVD ...
.. I want to import from the DVD. ...
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Adobe Photo Downloader stopped working; can't import from a DVD?

I use Premiere Elements 4 (loaded with Adobe Photoshop Elements 6) on Windows Vista.
When I attempt to import video from a DVD (via Get Media > DVD import) I am unable to do so and the message
ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER HAS STOPPED WORKING is produced by Windows.
I would value any help with this problem!
    Many thanks, Don Varleyhall

Well, if it was produced in an Adobe program, then it should be 100% DVD-compliant. The menuing structure should not be an issue, as it can with other programs (Roxio and Nero come to mind), or from a DVR-DVD unit. I have never seen one of those that did a DVD-compliant disc.
This might point to something else going on.
As a test, grab, or create a short Project in PrE with Menus, and then Burn it to Disc. Test this back in PrE, and see if it behaves exactly the same way. If not, then something might be odd with your first disc, or there could be some other issue. If the Importer fails again, I'd think about doing a Repair Install.
If the test works, the first thing that I would do would be to Copy your DVD-Video. One can use the free burning utility, ImgBurn to do this, if they do not have Roxio, Nero or some other DVD Copy utility.
As a thought, there are a lot of other programs, that can get in the way of many operations in PrE. You might find some tips on setting up your computer for an editing session, in this ARTICLE. Then, test with your DVD again.
    Good luck,

  • Audio problems from burning DVD's from Macbook Pro?

    Hey guys,
So lately I have been having problems with burning DVD.  I use either iDVD or Roxio Toast Titanium 11 too burn movies to play on my television. After burnign them I notice all of them have audio problems.  It's as if the audio is faint for the dialogue but when background music plays its blaring! I checked my TV and its definitely not my Television because sound plays from both speakers.  I was wondering if any other Macbook users had this problem or users of either of these programs had this problem because it's such a hassle burning movies without really enjoying them.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Can imovie 4.0 import from a DVD?

It was recommended that I try this question here instead of the emac DVD forum:
A friend filmed my horseride on her video camera then downloaded that onto a DVD. I thought I could bring that home to my emac and edit it down to the few moments the horse and I look good and make a new DVD from that. So far I can't seem to find anything that allows me to do that. All I can get the dvd to do is play the entire 21 minutes.
I know that I took video footage and edited it on my computer about a year ago but I can't remember the details. I know it did not involve a DVD.
Can anyone jumpstart my brain? I have read every "help" possibility on my computer with no luck so far.
My emac has IDVD and IPhoto and PhotoStudio and imovie. I know my emac has the capacity to read and burn CDs and read and burn DVDs but - obviously- I don't have any experience using all this.
I appreciate any insights anyone can offer.
    Thanks,
    Laura

  • Simple import from homebrew DVD - Pinnacle Studio can!

Has anyone discovered an easy way (pref directly in iMovie!) to import video from a homebrew (iDVD,DVDSP,Pinnacle,Set top box etc) DVD?
This excellent feature has been in Pinnacle Studio (Windows) since at least version 9 and it easliy and quickly allows you to rip content from a home produced DVD (not a commercial one obviously) directly within Studio, allowing further editing and burning. iMovie 6 will show the DVD when you try and 'import' and it lets you select it but then it 'filters unusable files' and you end up with nothing! Studio does it quickly and easily.
Right now this is causing me grief because I am struggling to push iLife/Mac's into schools when iMovie cant do this or capture MPEG2 in real time from a DV source. Again Studio can and it saves a huge chunck of time.
    Any ideas welcomed!
    Thanks
    Iain

even some Windows apps can not override physics.. mpeg editing isn't with frame precision (or, you have to re-render within the GOP => loss of pic quality) and mpeg isn't meant for editing at all, it is a playback compressor....
Apple holds standards high, so I don't expect in the near future support for some low-quality...

  • Can no longer copy files between internal drives or from burned DVD's

This just started today as far as I can tell. We have 4 dual 2.7GHz G5's running 10.4.4. Two of them seem to work as normal. The other two won't let me drag/copy files from one of the internal drives to the desktop or the other internal.
We have two internal drives, the one with OSX on it that works fine as in I can copy/drag files to the other internal drive (labeled "AV") or to the desktop. The AV drive won't let me copy/drag any files to the desktop or the other internal, I get the circle with a line through it. Also when I burn a DVD I can't copy/drag the files anywhere on any drive. If I put a previously burned disk (burned prior to today) in I can copy it fine to any drive.
I have verified/repaired all disks, repaired permissions, and checked read&write permissions.
    Any help?

OK, I figured it out (I'll admit to being a Mac n00b). I was using DVD+R's. So the act of trying to copy files from a DVD+R (even though it was burned in the same G5) changes something in the drives so nothing on them will copy.
Ejecting the DVD+R and restarting without the disk in it got it back to normal. The problem was reproduced when I tried the DVD+R again (just to confirm the issue and solution). Again a restart fixed it.
Moral of the story, don't use DVD+R in Macs even though they can burn to them.
Anyway, if anything hope this post can help other n00bies.

  • Poor quality from burned dvds

i'm having trouble with the burned dvds i get from this software. everything looks great when creating the project, but after it burns, the menu and slideshow photos look very fuzzy/out of focus. i have tried using professional quality and high quality, but neither look presentable on the dvd either on the computer or the tv.
is there anything else i can do to improve the quality?
    thanks,
    d

The pixel content of a DVD is about 640x480 (in still digital image square pixel terms). I'll let you in on a 'secret' - that's only about 0.3 megapixels. They were designed to be viewed on the old, conventional CRT TV sets. When viewed close-up on a large screen set they 'are what they are'.

  • Premiere Elements 11 crashes when importing from a DVD

Hi, I'm having trouble with my Adobe Premiere Elements 11.
I am trying to get footage off a set of DVDs I shot a while back (shot on a DVD cam, I forget what  the model is cuz it wasnt mine)  Anyway,  Everything went fine for the 1st 3 DVDs,  but when I got to the 4th, when I went to "get media" it does nothing for awhile, then if you try to click it freezes and the dialog box pops up saying the program is not responding and closes.
Also,  after that happened,  it does the same thing with the other DVDs when I go back to try them.  I can play it via my DVD player software, but Adobe crashes when I try to get the media.
Also, after this error in adobe, my DVD drive locks and I can't eject via the manural button, and when i right click on the drive in My Computer hit eject, it says "error ejecting DVD-RW Drive"
I have to eaither log off/restart  or go into the properties and disable the drive and reenable to be able to eject the DVD.
I really don't understand whats going on, and why its doing this.  Nothing changed on my computer inbetween ripping the DVD media, as I was doing them all back to back.  I would import from DVD, then export as WMV so I could send the footage to someone (the .VOB files wouldn't work for this and my file converters where not working right)
I have done an uninstall and reinstall (with a registry clean in between) and even a system restore to a previous point to resolve another issue I was having. (Could not make new folders)
But Adobe/DVD drive  is still having this issue.
I'm running on an HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx Laptop with Win 7 64bit btw.  I can get exact specs later if its nessesary.   But it was working just fine until I got to the last DVD so IDK why it would just quit on me like this.

    John T.,
You are correct. I probably was not clear in my question.
If the miniDVD's were produced correctly, and all discs were finalized, first doing a Copy of those miniDVD discs to the HDD, would be my first step.
While one can Import directly from DVD's, there are a couple of possible issues:
The process will be much slower, than Importing from Copies on the HDD, especially an internal HDD.
One will not have to have the particular miniDVD's inserted into the multi-drive (not possible with most computers and only one multi-drive.
    Good luck to the OP,
    Hunt

  • Importing from a DVD into Premiere CS6 and MPG files.

HI I'm new to this forum and to CS6. I'm well versed in CS3 Premiere and other earlier versions.
I have a problem importing the VOB files from a DVD into Premiere CS6. I copied the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD onto my hard drive and successfully imported the 3 VOB files that made up the 1 hour video. Upon placing them into a sequence (720 x 576 25fps DV PAL to match the DVD) I found that when I played over a join between the VOB files, the picture and sound briefly broke up. Is this normal? There is no encryption on the DVD.
I then used MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD to a MPG2 with MP2 audio file (thereby avoiding a decode and the subsequent recode when I encode the edited version, I.E. DVD is MPEG2 so I want to extract the video with the minimum of processing.) I tried to import this into Premiere but after it thought about it for a while, the resulting icon in the Project Window indicated that the file was not usable. Indeed it was not. I deleted it...... and then imported it again. It worked! This is not just a one-off occurrence. Any thoughts?
Premiere is fully updated along with all the other programs in CS6. Using Windows 7 64 bit.
    bye Andrew

    I have same issue too.
    Who can help me
Used "Media Encoder"  encore three . VOB(form DVD) files to WMV.
And used Premiere to import the file between the VOB files,
    the sound briefly broke up.
If change to import .VOB form dvd,the sound briefly broke up too.
    thanks!

  • Trouble importing from a DVD+R disc!!

Typically when I insert a disc into my drive, it appears on the left side of my iTunes and from there I import the songs to my library.
When inserting this particular disc it fails to appear in my iTunes. I've tried copying the files to my comp and then to iTunes and also copying the files directly to my iTunes library - without success. This is driving me mad! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    OK.
Put the DVD in the drive and right click on the drive in MY Computer.
    Click on Open.
You should see a folder with all your music in it.
Open the folder and copy one song to your desk top (pick one you can find easily in your iTunes library).
Open iTunes, find the song as it's listed in the library and drag and drop the back up there.
Now double click on it and see if it plays.
If it does create a file on your desktop and copy all the music from the DVD into it.
Now go into My Music>iTunes>iTunes Music and drag and drop the whole folder into that last folder ( double check where it's going by opening the folder and checking to be sure.).
Alternatively you have the option of using the Add Folder to Library from the drop down menu but that doesn't seem to have worked for you.

  • Can you import from a DVD or file?

I have not yet gotten my Macbook. I haven't had any time with iMovie yet either. My question is I want to edit and re-record some home movie footage. It has either been imported to my old computer as an AVI file, or it's on a DVD recorded from a camcorder to a set top DVD recorder. I see it's easy enough to connect a firewire camcorder to a Mac and capture/edit with iMovie. But can you grab video from other sources, such as the ones I listed? Like playing back the dvd in the drive and capturing the video from the dvd in real time? Thanks.

    Hi Icseds:
You will need to convert those files and the DVD into something that iMovie can import.

  • Importing from a DVD to FCP

Having lost my original FCP files for my film I'm wanting to import two preview DVDs into FCP and cut them together. I know this is very back to front! but is this possible? If not is there another way to import DVDs and then splice them together. Thanks for any help with this.

I've had mixed results w/ MPEG StreamClip.
If you have a PC w/ a DVD Player... Sony Vegas will import a Non-Copyrighted DVD directly from the Disc. -I guess it's because Sony makes those DVD Camcorders. The option is under IMPORT. Then you select the DVD. (FCP also needs this option)
You can then Edit, Trim, or whatever you'd like to do, then export a QT (or whatever format you need) ****, Vegas is so easy to use you can probably just Cut & Export your piece from there.
