Importing from camera into lightroom with camera picture styles in tact (camera neutral)

I use the Camera Neutral picture style on my Canon 5D mark ii when shooting landscape photogtraphy.  I would like my photos to remain Camera Neutral when I import them.  However, Lightroom always defaults the photos to Adobe Standard.  Is there any way to make this not happen?  I am fairly new to lightroom (used for 5 months) and would really appreciate the help as I am trying to import 16 gigs of Wallowa Mountain photogtraphy, and do not want to change each photo manualy.

If you always want Camera Neutral picture style to be applied, then open one of your images that you have imported and have changed nothing else in Lightroom.  Set the camera profile to Camera Neutral and save new camera default settings.  Then whenever you import that setting will be applied to all of your images.
If you don't always want that style, you could save a preset that applies the Camera Neutral picture style, and then you could choose to use that preset during the import process.
It is simply a matter of determining your workflow and then setting things the way you want them to work.

If you are having the same problem, i.e. a disk permission problem, open your favorite search engine and search on, "change disk permissions", and I think you'll find plenty of information on how to fix the problem. This is a Lightroom forum. Your problem is with your operating system. There is no sense in rewriting instructions that are already available if you do a simple search.

  • I need help! when I am importing my NEF files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support"

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?
    Thank you @dj_paige

  • Importing into Lightroom with card reader doesn't show previews

I am using Lightroom 2.4 with Adobe 5.4 Raw on a Windows XP based laptop -- however the problem I am having also presents on my desktop which also uses Lightroom 2.4 with Adobe 5.4 and Windows XP.  In fact the issue is completely the same on both computers:   When I try to import photos directly into Lightroom using a card reader, the interface opens, but does not show the previews -- and yes, the show preview box is checked.  The preview boxes are there, but they are completely greyed out.  If I use the same card reader but direct it to open into Photoshop Elements it shows the previews and it also shows them in Bridge for CS4. So clearly the problem doesn't lie with the computer or card or cardreader.   It seems only in Lightroom that the previews do not show up.  Adobe raw supports my camera which is set to shoot raw and it also makes a JPG copy, but neither show up.
I spent more than an hour with a tech trying to get this to work and didn't solve the problem.  I'm hoping that someone has some bright ideas that will help me out.
    Phyllis Perkins

I tried to respond before, but I think the message didn't go through.  Sorry.  Because my Lightroom hasn't been working the way it is supposed to, I have been doing what you suggest -- saving the photos from my card reader to a file through Bridge -- which does open the previews -- and then importing them to Lightroom.  But it means one extra step and Lightroom's strength is supposed to be work flow, so I would like to get it to work properly.  I think that if the card reader were faulty -- and the problem occurs with several different card readers -- that it wouldn't show the previews in Bridge or even Photoshop Elements, which it does.  So I think there is some problem with Lightroom, not the card reader.  Any other suggestions?  I'd be happy to know about them.  Meanwhile, thanks for your reply.

  • How do I import GPS information for all of my images from Bridge into Lightroom 5.3?

After importing my images into Lightroom 5.3, I discovered that the GPS location data was imported for some images, but not for others.  When I checked the metadata files for the same images in Bridge, the location data was present for all of my recently downloaded images.
Why would Lightroom import the GPS data for some images and not others?
Is there any way to import the location data from the Bridge metadata files into Lightroom?

    Tony,
Thank you for your suggestion.  I had already tried several approaches along those lines without success.  In the end, the GPS data was still present in Bridge metadata file for each image, but not in the Lightroom metadata files for the same images.
So, I went back to Lightroom, and did some further exploring on the internet for solutions.  Just as I was wondering whether or not the problem might be rooted in my download presets (i.e., setting copyright into, etc.), I stumbled across a reference by a Pentax owner that identified the same problem.  Here's the link:
    http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/203274-gps-data-not-importing-into-light room-4-2-a.html
In a nutshell, I can download all of the metadata, including the GPS location information, but only if I do NOT use any metadata presets.  If I use a metadata preset when downloading my images, no GPS data can be seen in the Lightroom metadata files, but it does import into Bridge's metadata files.  I've now tried this both ways, several times now, and have verified this result.
I also tried re-downloading images with no presets, and replacing (copying over) the image from my original download.  This did not solve the missing GPS data in the Lightroom metadata.  From this point, all that I could think of doing was removing all of my recent downloads from Lightroom, and starting over.  However, I'd already started editing my images, and I didn't want to lose that time.
So, I re-downloaded all of my recent images from my memory cards as a copy into each file without any metadata presets.  Then, after selecting the copy first, followed by selecting the original (order is important), I toggled 'Sync Metadata' under the Metadata tab in Lightroom.  Voila, the GPS data appeared in the original metadata.  When this is done for all of my images, I will delete the second copies in my files.  Once I am satisfied that everything is okay, and my images are backed up satisfactorily, and only then, will I reformat my memory cards.
This whole experience has surfaced an interesting quirk in Lightroom, or in my Lightroom settings that I don't understand.  It may be something that Adobe might want to look into further, if others are finding a similar problem.

  • I can't import raw files into lightroom

I have been using lightroom 4. I shoot with a nikon d300s. I recently used a nikon D610 and now it says preview not available. It also says the the raw images aren't able to import. So I recently upgraded to Lightroom 5 and it still says preview not available. I need some suggestions on how to import them.

I don't use nikon software.  I just use lightroom. I just got lightroom 5. I tried to update to 5.3 but couldn't find the location where to find it.

  • How to import Bridge Labels into Lightroom 3.4

I have  close to 500,000  images all neatly labeled in Bridge.  They have the color labels for: (red) select,  (yellow)second, review, to do (the basic standard adobe created labels)  nothing customized.
After importing my entire collection into lightroom (27 hours) nothing at all remained of these labels.  Making this thing entirely useless.
I cannot imagine why two adobe products would not share defaults like this or am I missing something obvious?
Does anyone know how to import the labels from Bridge into lightroom? (keep in mind that I know nothing of lightroom so make it baby steps)
    thanks

"Even the stars from Bridge do not register in Lightroom..."
    Yes, they do.
Allow me to do a bit of explanation how LR works, here:
Bridge and LR work differently, and it is important to understand this difference.
Bridge works as a file browser. Whatever you put into a folder / or a drive  Bridge will "see" it  (as long as it is image-related).
For instance if you do a name change for an image file or a folder in your OS, Bridge has no trouble "seeing" the changed file or folder.
LR doesn't work as a file browser. LR creates and works with a database called Catalog. LR does not "see" an image-file unless it is imported. Importing means adding it to the Catalog. You can have any number of images on a drive / in a folder that LR does not "see" as long as they are not imported into LR.
That means, -  in the case of a change of file name and/or folder name that you do outside of LR (for instance in Bridge), - that LR cannot "see" this folder / image file. LR still has this image / folder in the Catalog under its old name and when it looks for it, it can't find it because the name has changed. LR then flags this file / folder as "missing". "Missing" in this sense doesn't mean that the folder  / the image is not on the drive; "missing" means that LR cannot find it.
LR can also create, work with and read xmp-files, also called sidecar files. XMP-files are small files that contain mnetadata, such as the camera settings, the date & time, the title, caption, etc - but also develop / edit metadata. When you use the Camera Raw feature in Bridge and edit the image, Bridge writes the data into the xmp-file. Also, things like color labels and ratings stars are written into the xmp-file.
To bring these into LR you have to make LR read the xmp-file. You do this in the Library Module by going to >Metadata > Read Metadata from File.
But be careful here. When LR reads the data from file that means also that whatever you did in LR (and did not save to xmp), will be overwritten when there is a conflict. So for instance, if you did image editing in Bridge, and late you did image editing in LR (on the same image) and you then select "Read Metadata from File", your LR-edits will be supplanted by the Bridge-edits.
To resolve this you have to make LR your only image editor. Also it is advisable to save your LR edits to xmp. You do this via Ctrl / Cmd. + letter "S" or > Metadata > Save Metadata to file. If you do this Bridge will be able read and display your LR-edits.

  • Can't import iphoto library into Lightroom

Lightroom does not appear to recognise my pics in the Mac iphoto library.  I can import from other folders/files but not directory from iphoto. Likewise I can't export a photo back into iphoto once it has been "developed" in Lightroom.
Do I have to change some preferences or something?

I recently changed my pc for a mac and all my old photo files were transferred across into iphoto and any new photos from my camera were imported straight into iphoto.   I have since started a course where we use Lightroom but find I can't import any photos stored in iphoto into Lightroom.  iphoto is always "shaded out" in the list when I try to import into Lightroom.
What do you suggest I do in order to import these photos into Lightroom?

does anyone know how to take photos from IPHOTO into Lightroom?

Because Apple has dropped "Aperture" and is switching users away from "iPhoto" to a new photo application called "Photo" so that they are more fully integrated with the Yosemite 10 and the iOS 8.3 going forward there are some instructions how to import photos into Lightroom without losing to much metadata or other information. Go under Lightroom help and follow he instructions.

    JohnAndKel,
That's odd because the CD reading test that the diagnostics runs didn't report an error. What happens if you select a song from the CD in iTunes and play directly from CD?
(Just a note, the filter trick doesn't do anything for CD import, just CD burn. iTunes doesn't use the Gear drivers for reading the CD.)

Be careful,  FCP is an open system which is great, but it allows you to work with formats that are not completely compatible with fcp and can cause serious problems down the road.  You can check the formats of all audio files brought into fcp by selecting them in the browser and hitting command-9,  Use compressor to convert all audio files to 48k 16 bit aiffs before importing to fcp.  There's a preset for this format in the apple presets.  You mention video files.  The same thing holds.  In particular, avoid bringing in h264 quicktime movies.  Convert to an fcp friendly format like prores using compressor.
