Importing from Device (Nikon D300) Problem

With my Nikon D80, when I "Import from Device" I see thumbnails of all the photos (Nikon RAW .NEF files) available for import to Lightroom and can choose those I want to import.
However, when doing the same procedure from my Nikon D300 I cannot see previews on the Import from Device screen in Lightroom. All I see are rectangles with a cross through them and the filename.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem and how did you solve it?
(If I go ahead and import the .NEF files from the D300, once they are imported there is no problem. They render previews in Lightroom OK. It is just that I cannot see previews in the Import from Device screen and, therefore, can't select which to import and which to ignore.)

Known issue with the OS - use a card reader instead.

  • Hi there, In CS3 I saw both my scanners in Import From Device, but in CS4 they are vanished, anyone have a solution for me?  Thanks in advance.

Hi there, In CS3 I saw both my scanners in Import From Device, but in CS4 they are vanished, anyone have a solution for me?  Thanks in advance.

The Twain.Plugin conflicted with bad scanner drivers made by scanner manufacturers and caused too many problems so it is not installed by default. Its in the goodies folder.
But I have to ask. Why tie up a $1000 application to use a $100 scanner? Use the scanner as a stand alone with the software that came with the scanner or use VueScan that way you can keep working while you are scanning. BTW you know that you are using the scanner software when you scan through photoshop right. Photoshop has no scanning capabilities built in.

  • Import from device

I am no longer able to import directly from a flash card. Under File "import from device" is grayed out. The flash card must be copied to desktop and then I can import from disk. The card reader is read by adobe bridge but not lightroom How do I fix this problem?

This was reported a little while back. Search the forum. One poster found a solution through a registry change. Didn't work for me but it might work for you.
What does work for me is that my camera shows up as a device on the desktop and I can use "Import Photos From Disk" and this works just as well. Presumably your flash cards should show up as a device and this would work for you. Hope this helps.

  • Import From Device "show preview" Does not work for RAW (Canon T1i/500D)

    Hi,
Not sure if anyone else has seen this.  I just got a canon T1i (500D for you Europeans).  When I plug the camera into the computer and select Import From Device, and select "show preview" in the import window, only the JPEGs show thumbnails.  All of my RAW images show up as grey boxes.  This is the first digital SLR I ever owned, and the first time I am really using lightroom.  This kills my workflow plans, as I ususally download images into folders, and name them, by category.  Without seeing the thumbnails, it is impossible to know what category what images belong to.
Anywone have any ideas?  Does this happen with all RAW images on all cameras?  Is it a T1i problem?
    Thanks.

OK, I have the previews working now, which is good.  Here is how I am using the tool.
    1) put the card in a card reader
    2) select import from device
I noticed a couple of things that are very frustrating:
    1) I Don't see a way to delete photos from the import tool, either manually or automatically after import.  I seem to have to delete thing through explorer (I am on windows xp)
    2) There is no indication of whether you have downloaded an image already or not.  The software that came with the camera puts an arrow on all downloaded pictures.  This is very nice if you are not importing all your pictures at once.
    3) My camera takes movies.  There is no way to import them along with the rest of the files (yes I know lightroom is not a movie tool, but having to use another program or explorer is annoying).  Furthermore,  every time I try to import files when there is a movie on the card, I get an error saying movies will be skipped.  The pics still import, but it is irritating.
Any suggestions?  I am trying to figure out a good work flow.  I would import everything and than organize the files, but I don't see any easy way to resort files and rename them en-mass.  I tried moving files in explorer, but, as could be expected, LR could not find the files afterward.  I re-synced the folder, but that lost the changes I made on images (I did not have them saved as DNG, so the modifications were in the side car, I guess).
    Thanks,

  • "Import from Device" Malfunction in 1.2

After loading an SD card into a reader, "import from device is not available". I know that Lightroom sees the card because:
    (1) if I activate "open Lightroom upon detection of a device", it recognizes it and enables me to import; or
    (2) I am able to import by clicking on "import from disc".
I did not have this issue with 1.1. I do not think I had this issue when I first loaded 1.2. (I am not sure though)
I am in a Windows XP environment.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Wait for the fix. Known bug that came out with 1.2.

  • Which Updates are required to read RAW files from a Nikon D300

iPhoto 6 on Tiger can't read RAW (nef) files from my Nikon D300. Can I just update to iLife'08 or do I need Leopard as well?

    AndyMm
I'm not sure about iPhoto 08, but you will definitely need 10.5.2 for the D300.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475
So if you don't want to update to iLife 08, try update to 10.5 first, see if that works for you.

  • How can i import raw files into iphoto from my Nikon D300?

Just got a Nikon D300, and it will import jpg and tff, but not raw (nef) files-i prefer iphoto to their software- Nikon says to try talking to apple to find a way to do it- does anyone know any info that can help? I need to decide if I am keeping the camera-from other posts it doesn't look like buying aperture will help either- thanks.

I would not ditch a camera because of this! If you like the camera, there will always be a way to import Canikon RAW files, though you may need to do some upgrading, and it may take some time for Apple to support a new camera.

  • Problems applying metadata to images when importing from device

When importing images from a device into lightroom 2 I have created and selected a metadata template in the information to apply section, but when importing the images to the lightroom library it does not apply the metadata to the images. Can anyone help?

You mean you're importing directly from an USB-attached camera?
If you import from a card reader, do the templates apply?

  • I updated to Lightroom 4.4, and it doesn't recognize RAW files from a Nikon D300s.

I updated Lightroom this past week to V.4.4.  Now, I cannot import any photos because Lightroom does not recognize the RAW photos.  Prior to the update, it recognized the files and imported photos without any problem.  Now I'm dead in the water.  Any advise as to how to fix this?  Or revert back to a prior version of Lightroom?

Are you by any chance using Nikon Transfer to copy the files from your memory card to your computer?  If so, that could be the problem because there is a known issue with Nikon Transfer making some small change to each file.  If this isn't the problem, are you using LR to import directly from the camera or from the card via a card reader?  That could be the issue.  Try copying the files using Windows Explorer or Mac Finder to a folder on your hard drive and then see if LR can import from there.  That may help you narrow down the issue.  I have a D300s and have not had this problem with LR 4.4.

  • LR 1.2: can't import from device with 40D

    Hi,
Import photos from device menu is disabled in LR 1.2 when my 40D is connected via USB, even though Canon software works ok to retrieve pictures. I've tried many things, shutting down LR and /r the camera, but nothing makes it work, menu remains grayed out. Any idea?
    Thanks,
    -fred

I think there's more going on here. I use a canon 20d and a card reader. Absolutely no problems there until I installed 1.2. Now the 'import photos from device' tab is canstantly greyed out. When I turn on 'show import dialogue...' tab - like Fred did - then LR recognises the inserted CF card (in the cardreader).
    I think it's a new bug.

  • Lighroom 1.4 probelm importing from device

I am experiencing a problem with LR 1.4. When I connect any camera, and go to File - Import photos from Device, the dialog that appears has a preselected location to save images to that is a network path in our office server, a location that does not exist anymore. So I click on the browse button to change it and at that point, a Windows Live Sign In screen attempts to show up and freezes my Lightroom, eventually forcing me to kill the app and restart. This goes on and on. Where do I change that location preference?
I tried trashing the preferences file and it still keeps that setting pointing to the network folder. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid I've had this problem for months and nothing seems to solve it - not even extensive emails with Adobe's crack team in sweden. It's bought me to my knees. I've tried a new hard drive, a new camera card, a new firewire reader, formatting the card, importing the files to the desktop and then importing to LR (which didn't work for me), changing cameras, reinstalling the OS, upgrading the OS, shutting down all other apps....everything. I get the pizza wheel of death and a total corruption of my catalogue. The problem is that it occurs intermittently so its hard to test for the fault systematically.
The curious thing is that I have three macs and only one of them has this problem, so in the end I had to get rid of the macpro and buy a new one.
However last week I just put a new hard drive in one of the machines that has been running LR fine for sometime and now that has started to crash too, so I'm wondering if there is a connection between the harddrive and LR. If anyone has a solution please let me know.

  • Lighroom v2 crashes when importing from device

I have a Mac with the latest OS. When I attempt to import from a device (CF card reader) in many cases I get the beach ball and end up having to force quit LR2. I then updated to 2.1. Same problem. After it crashes, I usually have to restart computer to get LR2 to work again.
Sometimes I can get the import screen to come up. If I scroll down to view images, it will then crash. Or try to deselect an image.
I can copy the images via the finder onto my HD and import them that way via LR with no issues. Just when I attempt to import via a device.
    Any ideas?

  • Importing from DVD via Handbrake problems...

HI folks. I've taken a DVD of our ancestors, that is a simple set of chapters of movies. I used handbrake to convert to mp4 but Final Cut Pro 6 is telling me it cannot import the video because unknown errors. If I drag and drop, the File error, unknown file. When I try to Log and transfer it in, it says it has an invalid directory structure.
However, the mp4 plays just fine in Quicktime 7 and exported from QT to QTmov it plays as well. It will not import from QT Mov either, although the file is too small for my needs.
I'm creating a family heritage dvd. Any suggestions? Do a I need a different, $$ pro, translator?
    Thanks
    Jeff

The information you have been provided is incomplete. Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback plugin gives QuickTime the ability to play MPEG-2 files, including .VOB DVD files. Theoretically this should allow import into Apple's video editing apps. HOWEVER, I found that my DVD recorder's VOBs must encode AC3 audio or some other audio spec not supported by the plugin because the audio in the files do not play through the plugin. YYMV. At the same time, though, MPEG Streamclip is able to properly play the files back with the plugin installed, whereas without the plugin it cannot read MPEG2. My current workflow is to open the .VOB files with MPEG Streamclip, then export them to QuickTime, then import them to Final Cut, which while requiring rendering, seems to be a good amount faster than rendering from .VOB to .MP4 using an app like iSquint. It's still not ideal because of the plugin audio issue, but it's better than what I was doing previously.
