Importing from digital 8mm camera to imac.

I want to import a heap of movies from an 8mm camera to my imac. I know that imovie will handle the process but I have limited hard drive space. Can I go straight to an external hard drive? Alternatively, can I import to imovie, then move/cut-paste for bringing back in and editing later?
One more thing, can I delete the full movie files I have imported into imovie once I have taken the bits I want and put them into a project without mucking up the project or does it have to stay there until the project is completed?

  • Iphoto 11 import problem.  My camera is importing photos as 4x4.  I see a single image in the preview window, but the import is 4x4.  I just imported from a different camera and that one was OK.  I can't find any setting to change to fix this problem

I am having a new problem in IPhoto'11.  An older camera is importing photos as 4x4 (16 copies to a single image).  In the preview pane the photos are fine (single copy per image).  I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting but the problem repeats.  Earlier I had a successful import from a different camera.
I can't find any settings to change this. Help!

Sorry but I do not understand your question
As to importing iPhoto simply copies the photos to the iPhoto llibrary - no changes of any sort are made

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • Q: When importing old digital 8mm tapes, audio is only mono. How do I

force stereo or add a second audio to the other speaker. It is annoying ot watch an hour's worth of movie with only sound form one speaker. I know I can do this in final cut, looking to do completely within iMovie '08.

A Digital-8 camera should have had a stereo mic built in, but maybe the tapes were recorded with an extra external mono mic connected. It happens.
The mono audio from one speaker can be copied to the other channel of the stereo track by either (a) sending the movie to GarageBand and doing the tweaking there by adjusting this 'pan' control:
(..click on the picture for a bigger, clearer version..)
..or by (b) 'Extracting' the audio within iMovie, and then editing the audio in another program such as Audacity or Sound Studio ..click the following little picture and then click 'Start Slideshow' for the details:
Although iMovie can handle several audio tracks, it expects each one to be in stereo and doesn't have the facility itself to move audio from one channel of the audio (..left or right..) to the other channel.
If you're not familiar with adjusting audio in iMovie '08, try watching Apple's iM'08 audio tutorial, here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie-sharing-33
Finer tuning, or rather positioning, of audio, Extracting, etc - but still not this copying from left to right, or vice versa - is available in iMovie HD 6, which is downloadable from here. Both versions will happily work (separately) on one Mac.
"..looking to do completely within iMovie '08.." ..nope; can't be done: you'll need to import the movie into GarageBand for the simplest solution. Then export it from GarageBand and re-import into iMovie:

  • Aperture hangs on import from iPhone or camera

Since a few weeks I can't import from my iPhone or digital camera anymore.
If I try to import Photos from my iPhone or camera Aperture hangs forever. The Photos should be imported as referenced ones to a folder on a network share on a Mac OS X Server. This works fine, if the Picture source is i.e. a memory card or a HDD. And it has been working with the iPohne and camera before.
What happens is, that Aperture creates a file like "..importing.IMG0815.JPG" with 0 Bytes in the target folder. And than it hangs.
From this point on there is a permanent network traffic, and reasonable CPU load on both Macs (the kernel_task on the client and the AppleFileServer task on the Server). If I delete the "..importing.IMG0815.JPG" file it is instantly recreated. This continues even if I kill the Aperture application. The only way to stop this is to unmount the Network Volume.
Does anyone has an idea what this may cause?

Aperture, Lightroom etc. are all designed to make use of direct import. They are safer than copying your files via the OS tools for the simple reason they access the cards read-only. If you use OS tools to copy then you are accessing the cards read-write which is far more dangerous if something goes wrong.
Culling your images during import saves time and disk space also. Copying your images directly and then importing is a WASTE OF YOUR TIME.
We disagree. Although such apps are indeed "designed" for direct import, my empirical observations since the earliest days of digital imagery have been that interacting indirectly using an app like Aperture is much, much less stable than directly interacting via Finder when properly done. One can peruse literally hundreds of digital image threads including this one to see overwhelming real-world evidence of what I am talking about.

  • Transfer from Digital 8 camera won't recognize

I'm a first time user of Mac (just picked up a new iMac last month) and I'm a beginner at video editing also. I've been playing around with the Mac trying to transfer video via a firewire from my Sony digital 8 camera.
I have had success in getting the tapes that were recorded with the digital 8 camera to transer using the firewire but any other tape that I put in that I have recorder with a another camera in the past is not recognized by the Mac. I just get a blue screen and the computer will not recognize the signal.....the camera will play and display the videos perfectly and the Mac will recognize play/stop/rewind commands from the camera but will not record or display any of the signal whatsoever.
The tapes that I recorded on the digital 8 are a mixture of regular, hi8 and digital 8 tapes so I don't think that the type of tape is the issue but I think that its the camrea's inability to recognize and convert the non-digital tapes for transmital on the firewire...don't know, thats just my thought on it
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions
    thanks in advance
Is there a way that I can get around this issue of transfereing these videos to the Mac via a firewire?...is there something on the camera that I may have to activate for the Mac to recognize the video signal that was not recorded on the digital 8 camera?

is there something on the camera that I may have to activate for the Mac to recognize the video signal that was not recorded on the digital 8 camera?
Not sure if this may be your problem or not... In the VTR menu, is your "A/V —> DV Out" switched "On" or "Off?"

  • FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)
    Thanks for your time!

  • IPhoto 4.0.3 crashes on import from disk or camera

Whenever I try to import photos from my Canon camera or from a disk folder, the iPhoto program crashes. No files are imported. This means I can no longer add photos to my iPhoto library.
Can anyone suggest how I can recover from this problem?
I am running a single iPhoto library with about 5500 images in it.
    I am using iPhoto 4.0.3 (4H2).

    From Mac Help...
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
    2. If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
    3. Select the user account you want to delete, then click Delete .
    4. Click OK to save the user's files on the computer, or click Delete Immediately to remove the user account and all the user's files.
Notice in step 4 that you are given the option to save the user's files on the computer. The files from the old user are saved in the admin account used to delete the other account, and those files outside the user account are already available to all users. What other files do you need to transfer?

  • HT4858 why am I getting an error message while importing from iPhone photo stream to iMac ?

I have not shared any photo for a few months.  I tried to import photos into my iMac from iPhone photostream and I get a message saying "an error occurred while importing photo, please try again later".  What am I doing wrong ?

There's no need to import photos from your iPhone to your iMac. Photostream is synced automatically via iCloud on Wi-Fi.
On your iPhone, tap Settings > iCloud
Make sure Photo Stream is switched ON.
On your iMac, open System Preferences > iCloud
Make sure Photo Stream is selected.

  • Importing from two different cameras

I have been using iphoto for years with my Canon G5. I recently purchased a Canon SD750. When I import the photos from the SD750 it does not show up in the iphoto library, it only shows up in the "last roll" folder. How do I get the photos from the SD750 into the library folder along with the hundreds of photos imported from the G5? Do I need to reset the file names in the SD750 photos? Thanks.

iPhoto can easily handle multiple photos with the same filenames. Since new imports are placed in a new Film Roll, the filenames can be the same. The film roll is part of the file's path, and when the paths differ, the files can be named the same. If you place a new photo into the same roll with a photo of the same filename, then the new one's name will be appended with a "_2" at the end of the filename. You don't have to worry about changing the naming settings of your camera.
it's the first thing it prompts me to do when I first turn the camera on...
If it has asked you to set the time more than once, then you should replace (or install) the little watch battery that came with the camera. It should retain the time setting for 3 to 5 years, even if your camera's main batteries become drained.
    Regards.

  • Out of sync audio when trying to capture from digital 8 camera to quicktime, please help

    Just trying to capture hi 8 tapes using a sony digital 8 dcr-trv355e pal into quicktime;
great clear video but  audio becomes out of sync like a bad kungfu movie,
contacted apple they tried to help, but they dont really understand issue
    there are lots of people out there that are trying to digitise old analog video;
    I have fcpx and imovie they both play the old video via  the digital 8 camera but cannot capture;
that is why using quicktime; thanks!!

Yes i think its something to do ith the fact its a wmv file, when i use mpeg footage it exports fine.
basically, no matter how long the video, the video is out of sync...its weird
i've decided the best thing to do is leave quicktime and export using windows media instead, that seems to give me a better looking picture witha small file size anyway
    thanks for your help though!

  • Import from digital camera no longer works

    iPhoto 6.0.6
I suddenly can't import photos from my Casio digital camera.
It worked fine two months ago, with the same computer and the same camera.
When I connect the camera to the computer, and turn the camera on, the camera appears on the Desktop, and iPhoto launches.
At this point iPhoto used to display an "Import" button.
    But not anymore.
Now iPhoto just displays the photo library with the already imported photos.
    No "Import" button.
To force the import I tried Shift-Command-I.
(I have never tried Shift-Command-I before, but I suppose it was worth a try)
Shift-Command-I gave me a directory dialog box.
In the directory dialog box I navigated to the camera, found the camera's subfolder with photos, and clicked "Import" in the directory dialog box.
iPhoto began to prepare for import, but crashed after five seconds.
Clicking on "Stop Import" had no effect, and I had to force quit.
I tried all the above several times, and got the same result every time.
    Any ideas?

    Try:
1- log into another account and try importing into a test library there (do no have iPhoto delete the files!).
2 - boot into Safe Mode and try in your primary account.
It you can't import in #3 and can in #2, a reinstall of iPhoto would seem to be mandated. If you do try a reinstall of iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.
If you can't import in either #2 or 3, then a reapplication of the 10.4.10
COMBOupdater is suggested. Followed by a repair of disk permissions, of course.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto: Pictures will not open/cannot import from Digital Camera

    hey guys!
I'm just recently having problems with iPhoto. I can open pictures on my iMac when clicking on them through folders itself, but when I go into iPhoto and try to double-click on the thumbnail images which show up to make them full size, they do not open..the wheel just spins to show its loading but the pictures do not load.
Also, when i click IMPORT to import pictures from my digital camera, the wheel also just spins and it does nothing again, and says it couldnt import the pictures as they are an unrecognized file, which is weird as this had all worked before.
    thanks!

  • Images imported from a digital camera were viewable and editable at first but later disappeared! They cannot be re-imported from either the camera or the iCloud as iPhoto indicates that they already exist, but cannot locate them. Please help!

On holiday I have been uploading my photos to iphoto on my macbook pro every few days, the latest batch appeared and I was able to edit them, flag, merge events etc. However, later that day when I went back to the images they could not be found in my library. They had been removed from 'latest import', however were viewable on the icloud photo stream. I have attempted to re-import the images from both the digital camera and my photostream but iphoto indicates that the images had already been imported and would not import them again. I was able to locate the master images using finder, but Iphoto tells me that these files are unreadable (they are .jpg) when I try to re-add them this way. I have also tried to 'unhide' all images in case I had accidentally hidden them but this didn't work either.
    Any other suggestions?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
