Importing from external hard-drive without all the clutter

greetings...i need to import my saved iphoto library from my external hard-drive back to my new computer's iphoto library...how can i best do this without bringing along all the clutter (copies or originals i don't want)...i dropped my entire saved library into my computer's library but ended up with thousands of versions i do not want (i just want the versions i last had-complete with typed information or labeling)...certainly one doesnt' have to go through the whole imported library and delete all the copies and originals they no longer want (that would take a week!)
thanks,
here's what i see on my external hard-drive:
(what should i drag over?)
AlbumData.xml
Data (Folder)
Dir.data
iPhoto.ipspot
iPhotoLock.data
iPod Photo Cache (Folder)
Library.data
Library.iPhoto
Library6.iPhoto
Modified (Folder)
Originals (Folder)
Thumb32Segment.data
Thumb64Segment.data
ThumbJPGSegment.data

(what should i drag over?)
All of it, as a unit.
To restore an iPhoto Library drag the iPhoto Library Folder to the Pictures Folder and start iPhoto. There's no importing involved.
All of the "clutter" is necessary for running iPhoto. If you don't want it, use a different app.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • If I donwload e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need a special hard drive?

If I download e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need to know anything special?

I just looked into this as I was moving my iPad to a new computer for synching.  With no thanks to Kobo for any really useful information on their help site (this discussion was the most useful info I found), I think the following may address your issue with respect to Kobo.
    1. There is not easy or official way to back up Kobo books from your iPad.
    2. Kobo keep track of your personal library.  Go to the Kobo website (Kobo.com) and sign in to your account.  On the very top line is "My Library".  That contains (or at least Kobo says it does) everything you have ever bought from Kobo.  Kobo say that you may download any of this content to other devices you own at no charge.
    3. I synched my iPad to the new computer.  According to Apple, that will delete all my data as the apps are re-installed from the new compute.  While all my apps got moved around from the order I previously had (many thanks Apple), all my books are still there together with my bookmarks etc.  Looks like this did nothing to change any Kobo data.
While I do not like the idea that I cannot create a backup on my main computer, it is probably safer in the long run that there is a backup at Kobo.  After all, I could lose all my equipment in a fire or something, and then personal  backups would be of little use.

  • I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open

I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from an external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. While setting up my new MAC the external hard drive was dropped and I have been told by an outside source they could not retrieve the files.  It had 4 years of photos and videos on it. I remembered that I had downloaded some of the videos from the external hard drive (before it was broke) to Adobe Organizer 13 when I installed the Adobe 13 on my MACOS X 10.9.5.  I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open these videos?
Any input is greatly appreciated!! I am sick over losing the videos and had a little hope on Adobe Organizer until I was unable to open them.  I am thinking it is due to my external hard drive not being plugged in. I thought when I transferred from the external hard drive to Adobe 13 that it would be there without the external hard drive needing to be attached but maybe I did something wrong.
    Thanks again for any help!!!!

To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • Retrieving old photos from external hard drive without replacing current library

    Hi everyone,
This problem has probably been discussed before but I have not been able to find a definitive answer.  Hopefully I can find a solution to this problem here.
I am having trouble with my workflow in iPhoto.  Right now when I place an SD card full of digital photos into my Macbook Pro, I import all of them directly into iPhoto.  I use iPhoto to organize my photos and do simple edits and changes.  However, recently I have begun to fill up my 250GB hard drive with photos and HD video, so I use an external hard drive to backup my computer before deleting unneeded items.  Obviously, the purpose of backing up is to be able to go back and retrieve those items.  With items saved in Documents>Photos, they can be easily organized, and then retrieved later from whatever date they were saved on the external drive, adding them back to the existing photos currently on my computer.  However, iPhoto is a great tool, so I prefer to use it instead.  But I notice that saving an iPhoto library onto a backup drive is not the same as saving a folder full of pictures.  When I try to open an iPhoto library from my external hard drive, it tells me something about not being able to open it, or replacing my current library with the old one just to view my pictures.  I simply want to find old photos saved within iPhoto, and add them to my existing library.  Does iPhoto really only allow you to open one library at a time, and not browse them and add them together?  If so, then just saving photos outside of iPhoto in Documents seems like a better workflow for retrieval, but at the cost of not being able to utilize iPhoto's capabilities.
If my view of how iPhoto works here is very wrong, please let me know.  I just don't want to have to save my photos outside of iPhoto just to be able to find them again without replacing my current photos.  Thanks everyone for your help.

iPhoto can only open one library at a time.
Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • File not found after importing from external hard drive

I have been importing music from an external hard drive into my Itunes account.  Some of the songs transfer fine, but some of them show up in Itunes as being imported, but when I go to listen to them I get a file not found message because the original file cannot be found.  If I have the hard drive plugged in there is no problem, but without it I get that message.
Any advice?  I"d really like to get all music set up in Itunes.

  • Importing FROM external hard drive to new internal hard drive

How can I move my backed up Itunes library from my external hard drive to my new internal hard drive? I went through the steps listed on the support page, and imported the .xml playlist that I moved to the desktop. Now all my playlists (names only) are on Itunes, but there is no content. Help?

assuming you moved the whole iTunes folder to your new internal HD, try this:
launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear
click +choose library+ and navigate to the _iTunes library file_ on your internal HD.
    any luck ?

  • MOV. files will not import from external hard drive to iMac.

Do I have to convert MOV files somehow to be able to import them into an iMac from an external hard drive?
The files were moved from MacBookPro to hard drive. They play fine on external hard drive but won't import into iMac which says file format not recognised.

The file plays on my desktop and from the external hard drive, but I converted one file to an MP4 which then imported to iPhoto. Any recommendations on how to convert to MP4 files in bulk?

  • When importing from external hard drive, creating double songs

I just used the add to library to add lot of songs from an external hard drive. They were in various formats. I-tunes created copies of many of them. This hard drive had 80g worth of music, it would take me forever to go through i-tunes and delete the duplicates.
Why did it do this only to some and how do I correct the problem?

No I tried both neither seems to be working on my system. I used Duplin version 2.5 because 2.6 requires Leopard and I am running tiger.
this is a mess, and I haven't done anything but import the files, I don't want to start setting up play list until I can figure out one of two things.
Why it did it in the first place, I could delete everything and reimport.
Or how to clean it up with doing it one track at a time.
    Thanks

  • How can I back-up my photos that are in my iPhoto to an external hard drive without using the iPhoto structure.

I am attempting to back-up my entire MacBook Pro on an external hard drive before deleting everything from the MacBook Pro. Although I appreciate iPhotos photo structure and organization, I would prefer to back my photos up outside of the iPhotos structure, using “regular files” such as it appears in iPhoto’s “Masters” folder.  However, I would like the Event names that are currently assigned to my iPhotos to remain attached to the photos.  Is there a simple way to do any of this? Would this be a matter of somehow exporting each Event from my iPhoto? THANKS!

    Terence Devlin wrote:
Stay away from the Masters folder. Rooting around in the Library package can damage the Library and is unnecessary and less useful than the supported way to so this.
Just export the them: File -> Export:

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Remember that the Masters won't contain any of the changes that you made, only the files exactly as copied from the camera.
Thanks, Terence.  As far as filenames go...does "Album Name and Number" work for keeping my Events together?

  • I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and all the event windows are black. Once you click on a square the photos are still there. How do I fix that?

I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and the event windows show up black.
The photos are still there once I click on an event but they don't show in the window.
My next step is to delete the iPhoto library from the internal memory to free some memmory space but I don't want to do this until I see that the library works fine on the external hard drive.
    How do I fix that?

Hold down the "option" + "command" keys and launch iPhoto.
    Select the "Rebuild Thumbnails" choice.

  • When importing from external hard drive, photos appear as thumbnail size.  How do you edit.  Working on imac- snow leopard

I have photos on an external hard drive.  When I try to import them to iphotos they appear as a thumbnail (?), small in size.  How is the photo restored to its original image.  If I try to print, it comes out pixelated.   I have many photos on hard drive and would like to restore to original size.   Using Leopard OS

and the only time I see the pixellation problem is when the original photo's file size is small.
What did you expect? Of course if the file size is small it won't print well. There isn't enough data to create a reasonable quality print.
Web Photos are - typically - very heavily compressed to speed up downloading. I've seen Facebook photos - for instance - lose 90% of their file size after being "processed". There is no way that a 20kb file is going to print well at any size greater than a postage stamp.
So, basically, the problem you have is the photos you are importing, I'm afriad.

  • Trouble importing from external hard-drive

So i used the support tab to copy everything from my library onto my external drive and it worked fine. everything is in my library but I can't use any of it! everytime i try to play a song or something it says it can't be found. Some of the songs i didn't buy on iTunes. Is there a way I can fix this?? I moved my music from my family computer to my new laptop (toshiba with windows 7). Please help!!

If you go to the Apple website it walks to through the steps to do so. You can't just transfer the files there is a special way you have to do it.
