Importing from hard drive

mac os x version 10 desktop Mac OS X (10.4.8)
I transfered projects and folders from my laptop into lacie fire wire 250 GB drive and am trying to import to my desktop apple mac. After I hit import and proceed onto lacie drive and contents, the section where I have to click and start importing, appears blank with no images. However the info screen for the folder shows that I have images stored there.
Any clues as to why this might be happening?

First, I moved specific projects from laptop macbook pro to a lacie fire wire drive.
This doesn't give enough information to troubleshoot your problem. Specifically, how did you do this? When you say you moved specific projects, did you use the menu option File>Export>Export Project?
If you did use File>Export>Export Project, and you are using referenced files, this will not move the images, it will only export the adjustment, keyword, and metadata imformation along with the tree structure for the project/folders/albums.
To import an Exported Project you must use the menu option File>Import>Projects (don't use the blue import arrow icon). To move your referenced files from your laptop to the external drive, you should use File>Relocate Masters.
It may just be easier to do this for each project you wish to move:
1) Make a backup of your Aperture Library.
2) On the laptop, select a Project and use "File>Consolidate Masters for Project" to move the Referenced image files into the Aperture Library as Managed image files.
3) On the laptop, use "File>Export>Export Project" and navitage to a folder on the external drive to export the project to the external drive.
4) Connect the external drive to the desktop and on the desktop use "File>Import>Project" to import the project into the desktop Aperture Library.
5) On the desktop, use "File>Relocate Masters for Project" to move the Managed images out of the Aperture Library as Referenced image files on the external drive.
If you are starting with a fresh, empty Aperture Library on the desktop, you could also try this:
1) Backup your Aperture Library.
2) On the laptop, select the "All Images" Smart Album under the Library Icon, select all images in the browser by clicking on the first one and choosing menu option "Edit>Select All" and then choosing the menu option "File>Relocate Masters" to move all image files in your Aperture Library to the external drive (they will still be Referenced images).
2) Move the Aperture Library file from the Pictures folder on your laptop to the Pictures folder on your desktop. (If there is already an empty Aperture Library in your desktop Pictures folder, then move it somewhere else, or delete it if you're sure it's empty.)
3) Start up Aperture on your desktop with the external drive attached and it should find the Referenced files.
4) If for some reason it does not recognize the location of the Referenced files, then select the "All Images" Smart Album under the Library Icon, select all images in the browser by clicking on the first one and choosing menu option "Edit>Select All" and then choosing the menu option "File>Manage Referenced Files". Click on one of the files with a broken reference then navigate to the file's location on the external drive. Click the "Reconnect all button."

  • Elements 11 will not properly import from hard drive video of 352 x 480.  Audio is fine.

Hello All,  I'm wanting to import VHS video that was burned to a DVD.  Frame size is 352 x 480.  Elements shows it, even after rendering, as very distorted video on the monitor panel.  Audio is fine. Anybody here have an idea how to conform my video to the Project?

    Thank you for the reply.
(Note: It would be better also to know...frame rate and progressive or interlaced video...NTSC or PAL setup...but for now....with some assumptions...
Although I have never run into a DVD-VIDEO video file with the 352 x 480 (4:3) resolution, it does exist apparently.
DVD-Video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From my perspective, if your client's goal is DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc for this source, I do not see that Premiere Elements (any version)
is going to produce a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc with video files 352 x 480 (4:3). It will give you (NTSC) 720 x 480 4:3 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second
    or (PAL) 720 x 576 4:3 @ 25 interlaced frames per second.
If your client can settle for your 352 x 480 (4:3) source exported to a file saved to the computer hard drive, then Premiere Elements 11 can give you a MPEG2.mpg
    file with a 352 x 480 4:3 resolution.
But, assuming the NTSC DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc workflow....with Frame Width = 480 pixels and Frame Height = 352 pixels...But if this is really portrait rather than
landscape oriented video, then we have other considerations not mentioned below....and I suspect we may be going in that direction...the answers will be in the details...
    1. Open Premiere Elements 11 to the Expert workspace. Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
    2. In Change Setting, select
    NTSC
    FLIP
    Flip Mino and Ultra 29_97p
OK out of there. In the New Project dialog that next appears,
make sure that you have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Settings on This Project. OK out of there.
    3. Back in the Expert workspace, import your VTS_02_1.VOB using the project's Add Media/Files and Folders to get
the file into Projects Assets from where it is dragged to the Timeline.
(Typically the DVD-VIDEO's video files start with VTS_01_1.VOB, but not always. This may be one of those not always times. Just
check that your video is represented in those video files (VTS_).
    4. Edit, Add Menu if you want.
    5. Publish+Share/Disc/DVC disc with preset NTSC_Dolby DVD for the NTSC DVD-VIDEO Standard 4:3 on DVD disc
@ 29.97 interlaced frames per second.
    6. Moment of truth...what does that look like on your TV's DVD player.
Please review and consider and then we can fine tune if my assumptions did not meet your actual details.
    Thanks.

  • Trouble importing from Hard Drive

So I downloaded my mini DV camcorder tape to my hard drive thinking that I would edit and make a movie later. I think I should have originally archived from my camcorder to my hard drive. I am now having difficulty importing from my hard drive as all my clips have been separated by days. What is the best way to import from my hard drive to iMovie so that it will create thumbnails, etc? I hope this makes sense.

You should be able to open iMovie with the hard drive attached, and you should be good to go. The thumbnails would have been generated when you imported the DV to your hard drive (assuming you used iMovie for the import).
iMovie will automatically split clips into days much like iPhoto creates Events. You can rename these in imovie so they have a meaningful name to you. You can all merge events if necessary, for example if a whole weekend is all the same thing, you could merge it into a single event rather than three separate days. You do this by dragging and dropping within iMovie.

  • Lightroom 5.3 crashes when I try to import from hard drive

I was running LR 5.2 and when this happened I upgraded to 5.3, same result. When I go to import from my hard drive, it allows me to select the drive and open the top level folders on the drive. When I go to open the lower level folders where my images are stored, the program stops working. The whole screen grays over and eventually says that the program has stopped working...windows wants to close it and check for a solution.
I have rebooted the computer, same result.
    Win 7 64 bit, i5, 16 gig RAM

It is a known issue that Adobe isn't discussing.
The best workaround I have found is to remove any videos from the storage media then try importing -- works as it should (minus videos) for me now.
I would not suggest the normal suggestion of rebooting....I mean deleting your preferences file (I already tried it).

  • Address Book import from hard drive NOT runnung computer

Now I want my old asddress book contacts. Everting I see say export then import - I can not export - all i can do it see the AddressBook.data file. How can I get at it???

Hi Jonathan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    For Address Book...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
Doubtful any of those will be of use except...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata/<36 digits>:ABPerson.abcdp
Which AB in 10.5 or higher should import I hear.
The other way would be to use Migration assistant.

  • Import from hard drive issues.

I am trying to import a hard dive full of folders of images. Lightroom sees most of the images, but there are folders where it says there are 0 images. I have checked these folders on the hard drive, and there are readable images enclosed. How do I get Lightroom to read those images?

    1. If you have selected "New Photos" in the import window then try to select "All Photos".
    2. If you have selected "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" in the import window then try to de-select it.
NOTE: This will allow Lightroom to re-import photos you may already have in your library.

  • Import from Hard Drive Not Working?

I've just upgraded to iPhoto '11 and am, so far, not happy about it. Latest issue is with importing. It works fine for the iPhone and camera, but when I download photos from Shutterfly/Facebook and try the regular ways to import (using Import function, drag and drop onto iPhoto window, drag and drop onto iPhoto icon), nada. The total number of photos in my library does not change; can't find the photos anywhere. When dragging, I do get the green plus arrow, but no number of photos, which seems problematic. And of course, the Help menu is useless. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Got the same issue since I upgraded. I use iTunes64, do you? I thought that turning on Genius was the issue but it is not. Today it got even worse... I exported the Library as I always do now because of this bug, and while Windows sees the export in the Recent Items, iTunes64 does not see the file, and looking through my drive I can no longer see it either. As if iTunes64 had not only wiped its own Library, but also crushed the one I exported!!!
Would love to know how to get rid of that one. I have five kids and manage music and iPods for the whole family!!! Need this Library badly!

  • Why won't pictures imported from hard drive Pictures folder show full size in iPhoto?

I imported the photos from my Mac's "Pictures" folder into iPhoto. Some of the pictures I imported just appear in iPhoto as a tiny photo about an inch tall, surrounded by black. If I open them directly from the Pictures folder on my Mac, I can make them full screen. Is there a way to do that in iPhoto? I expect this is happening because of the low resolution of the photo, but I still would like to be able to see it full screen in iPhoto.

iPhoto shows you the image at full resolution. If the image is tiny then it's tiny.
You can magnify an image by 300%. In edit mode hold the option key and tap the 2 or 3 button.

  • Any way to import from another drive and leave clips in place?

    Hi
Is there any way to import from other drives where you can leave your media in place?
Whenever I've imported clips from another drive I had to copy them to the library, while clips on the same drive as the library I could leave in place. Besides getting a bit tired of FCP treating like a kid with Alzheimer's, what would one do, say, when a drive gets full? I could see big projects needing more than a single drive.
    best
    elmer

LIke Russ said, the copy of the entire folder structure is similar to creating a camera archive. This copy or archive is treated just as if it were a camera card - in particular, "leave in place" is not available, and you have the option go import just parts of clips if you want.
so technicay even though they reside in a hard drive this is like importing from camera, as opposed to "import from file".
I Will try to describe how I handle my media. I hope this will help clarify things a bit. I am not saying thus is the way to do things, but it is my way.
I keep archives of the camera cards, which I then erase and reuse.
I import clips from my camera archives which I store as external media (copying to a folder of my choosing instead of into the library). These movie files, plus other files that I get from other sources, can be later imported and used in other libraries using "leave in place".
And all of this of course needs to be regularly backed up.

  • Colour differences & LR not deleting from hard drive

    Hi,
I am running a Dell Dimension 1100, a NEC MultiSync 70 monitor, Xp SP 2 home, Olympus Master 2 and a full version of Lightroom 1.0,Photoshop CS2, and use a Olympus E-500 DSLR.
I have a slight issue with how Lightroom shows the colours of my pictures when i am comparing Olympus Master 2 v. Lightroom 1.0. Most pictures its hard to tell the difference without going back and forth constantly, but when i look at my pictures of flowers or landscapes, my pictures look so much more vibrant in Olympus Master compared to Lightroom. Is this a settings issue? or perhaps something else?
    Also.....
when deleting pictures from Lightroom, it asks me if i wish to delete from the hard drive or just remove from Lightroom, when i choose delete from hard drive, after it says its done, if i go look at the folder its still there :/.
any help would be apprieciated, I am a novice dslr user and still learning how to use the softwares out there

Are you shooting images in raw or jpeg mode?
I assume that Olympus Master 2 is the raw processing software bundled with your camera. If so, then you are asking why Olympus software renders pictures differently than Lr. This question has been asked (and answered) many times but it boils down to the fact that the Olympus default rendering could be far different than that chosen by Lr. Also, Olympus may embed proprietary information in the raw image useful to Master 2 but entirely unknown to Lr.
If you want Lr to operate more like Master 2, then create a Lr preset (with the appropriate adjustments -- likely a saturation boost), then apply this preset when importing.
Finally, the camera raw engine (ACR) used by Lr is noted for producing images more muted than that produced by software bundled with cameras. In my opinion this is a good thing since the default rendering that many cameras produce is not at all natural. But the powerful Lr develop module allows me to create any interpretation I choose. Including a head spinning contrast and saturation boost.

  • Importig Clips from Hard Drive Cameras

iMovie HD imports *.mod clips (provided there are not too many) very rapidly from Hard Drive camcorders. It creates a series of event folders, one for each day! These event files are *.dv and can be imported by iMovie HD 6 and FC Express. Why can't Apple update FC Express and iMovie 6 so we could bring our clips right into those programs without going through iMovie 8 or another third party conversion to dv if we want to do real video editing?

  • Recovery from hard drive

I was instructed to reset my notebook to repair fingerprint device.
Thought I had backup of data on external hard drive, but not.
Computer illiterate, but wanted to know if it is possible to recover data from hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please check professional services in your area, normally they charge few hundred dollars depending on recovery rates but never get 100%. There are few tools such as:
        http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-formatted-partition.htm
You may want to try yourself.
    Good luck.
