Importing from  iPhoto '11 to Aperture 3.2 - no keywords imported!

I've tried importing my IPhoto '11 (9.2) library into Aperture 3.2 now THREE times -- the last time via a clean re-install, yet none of my iPhoto keywords show up with my photos in Aperture.  Otherwise the import went ok.  Any ideas what went wrong and how to fix?  Thank you. //Steve

Hello!
Naturally, after I post here, the latest import worked.  All keywords seem to be on my photos (along the bottom of my photos).
I imported the photos via Aperture "import" function, and chose "import iPhoto library," "leave in current location." --  The first two times there were no keywords along the bottom of my photos in Aperture, nor in the metadata for any of my photos.
My latest trick was finding the keyword list in Aperture - they are in the Keyword HUD under "iPhoto" and then nested down in there.
A follow up:  My iPhoto library seems to be complete in Aperture, but Aperture continues "Processing...." with no further details.  Any clue what it's doing?  Thanks for your quick reply.  //Steve

  • Does anybody know why I get doubles of every image I import from iPhoto 11 to Aperture?

With the upcoming demise of the MobileMe Galleries, I'm making lots of changes to how photos are organized. I'm moving the galleries to a new host. But, I want to pull most of the events, etc from iPhoto 11 to Aperture. iPhoto 11 has been a nightmare to me, and I just want to be done with it. I find that when I import albums from iPhoto to Aperture, I'm getting doubles of every single image. I've set Aperture not to import duplicates, and messed around in other ways, but it's still requiring a LOT of time to delete all these duplicates. Anybody have an idea to fix this?

There's nothing broken and nothing to be fixed. When you migrate from iPhoto to Aperture it imports all the versions - Masters and previews - to the Aperture Library. This is so your migration is lossless.
When you import from iPhoto to Aperture you'll note the versions are tagged 'iPhoto original', 'iPhoto edited' etc so this means it's simple to find the versions in Aperture and delete the ones you might not want.

  • Moving from iPhoto 11' to Aperture 3

OK everyone, I know this has probably been asked many times before, but after searching previous discussions, I have not been able to find a more recent answer. I want to make sure I am doing this right from to get-go.
Basically, I would like to make the move from iPhoto 11' to Aperture 3. My biggest concern is duplication of images. I would like to import all images from iPhoto excluding any edits (essentially just masters) and begin using Aperture 3 for all my photo needs. From what I can tell, the easiest way to import would be to go to File > Import > select iPhoto Library. This then would ask me to select to leave them in their current location, or import them to the Aperture Library. If my goal is to get away from iPhoto, would it be best to import them in to the Aperture Library or leave them in their current location? If I chose import to Aperture Library, will they still be listed under iPhoto Albums in Aperture?
I have read that if I leave them in their current location, I can later select Consolidate Masters and that would allow me to delete my iPhoto Library. Would that be the same as just importing in to the Aperture Library to begin with and deleting the iPhoto Library?
I've also read something about exporting from iPhoto and then importing from Aperture. Is this an effective way to transfer? Any feedback would be great. These forums are awesome. I get more help on here then I do at the Genius Bar!!

If you have the latest  iPhoto 11'  and the most current Aperture 3.2.3, then you do not need to be worried about duplications. If your iPhoto and Aperture are current and the iPhoto Library has been upgraded by iPhoto 11, then Aperture will be able to import many images as proper master-versions pairs, so that the iPhorto edited versions don't need much additional space.
The older images, where Aperture cannot create a master-version pair will import as separate masters, one for the original master image file, and one for the edited version. Aperture will stack those two images and tag them with keywords "iPhoto Original" and "iPhoto Edited". You will be able to collect them in a smart album by filtering using these keywords and can use that to delete the edited versions you do not want.
I have read that if I leave them in their current location, I can later select Consolidate Masters and that would allow me to delete my iPhoto Library. Would that be the same as just importing in to the Aperture Library to begin with and deleting the iPhoto Library?
Yes, that would be the same.
If you want to migrate from iPhoto to Aperture and not use iPhoto any longer, then make a backup from your iPhoto Library and import into Aperture directly, without referencing the iPhoto Library. Referencing the iPhoto Library will give no added functionality, but will restrict your use of iPhoto and is not very safe.
The most versatile option ton import into Aperture is by using
File > Import > select iPhoto Library
This will mirror your iPhoto Library in Aperture exactly as it is now: Folders, events, books, slideshows, albums, keywords, and other metadata tags like ratings.
I've also read something about exporting from iPhoto and then importing from Aperture. Is this an effective way to transfer?
This will transfer your images, but not the work you put into organizing your library (albums, etc.)
Also you will only get the masters or the edited versions. By importing the library you can get both as master-versions pairs (as far as possible).
Any feedback would be great. These forums are awesome. I get more help on here then I do at the Genius Bar!!

  • Is there a workflow from iPhoto/iOS to Aperture 3

What I need is a workflow from iPhoto/iOS to Aperture 3, such as
    1. import images to iPad
    2. rate & modify pictures
    3. import to Aperture 3 the original images incl. rating and modifications (but not any modified copies)
I understood that's only possible between iPhoto apps on iOS devices - true?
Any (not too fancy) workaround available?
    Thanks for every hint.

  • I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11   into Aperture v3.0

I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11 v9.4.3  into Aperture v3.0. When I select import I get a message saying Aperture cannot import libraries from version earlier that iphoto 7.1.5 and tells me to upgrade to a lter version of iphoto. Advice ?

I am on MAC OS X Version 10.8.5
Is Aperture 3.0 still correct or have you upgraded to Aperture 3.4.5? Only Aperture 3.4.5 can import iPhoto 9.4.3 libraries.
As I said above, you can download the updater for Aperture here:

  • Import from iPhoto: how does Aperture manage videos?

This is relevant to some persons migrating from iPhoto to Aperture. My iPhoto Library contains a few small camera videos. I know Aperture doesn't handle these. When it does the import into Aperture, does it let the user know that there are some files it can't handle? Does it make it easy for someone to discard their iPhoto Library without losing the videos?

So someone who wished to dump their iPhoto Library after migrating to Aperture, might unwittingly lose videos they'd forgotten about -- they have to know to search for the videos and set them aside. Aperture does not help avoid that error.
(I saw your note on needing to keep iPhoto. It's true that one may use iPhoto for its many unique secondary services, but keeping two libraries of the same images is ridiculously inefficient.)
I've long been tempted to migrate to Aperture, but the inability to change 'image acquired' dates, concerns about how trustworthy the iPhoto migration really is, and Aperture's lack of official support for the MacBook have all held me back.
This lack of attention to detail wrt to iPhoto import reinforces the sense I have that Aperture isn't where I personally need it to be (not that iPhoto is perfect, but that's the devil I know). I know it works well for many others and I may yet migrate --- probably in a year or two and then only if they decide to support the MacBook.

  • Transitioning from iPhoto 6 to Aperture on new iMac

Please redirect me if there is somewhere this has been asked, or if there would be a better resource for me. I guess I have several issues here. We have a 2006 iMac with about 12,000 photos stored in iPhoto 6. I am a serious hobbyist, and want to transition to Aperture (at least I think I do, I suppose I am also considering LR3). We have a new iMac on the way, and I want to get some advice on how to best move everything over and set everything up before it gets here. So, here are my questions:
We tried to import everything into Aperture on our current iMac, and could not do an import due to our version of iPhoto being too old. I am wondering if this is going to be a problem with our new iMac as well- in other words, will we have to import everything into a new version of iPhoto, then into Aperture?
Also, our photos have keywords, but the rest of our organizational structure I can do without. We have been importing into iPhoto and naming each import with the date- unless we have forgotten, in which case it is just "Roll whatever". And these folders are organized by year in the IPhoto Originals folder.  I am open to any kind of organizational structure or workflow idea, but I would like to "clean up" our current mess of photos and get everything to be consistent. How can I do this? Should I export and then import, or is this process going to be easier than I expect it will be? How would it be best to get the photos from one computer (iPhoto) into Aperture on a new computer? Use of an external drive, export then import, etc?
Finally, I am not sure how to decide if I should use a referenced library and store all of my photos on an external drive, or to actually put everything into Aperture. Any advice?
Again, sorry if these are repetitive questions. Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

The version on your new Mac won't import the v6 iPhoto Library either.
But the new Mac will have a later version if iPhoto on it, so upgrade the v6 Library with that (just open it with the new version) and then migrate that to Aperture. As always - make sure you have a back up.
Rename the Rolls before doing anything else. Any Rolls not renamed will be split into (possibly) multiple Events on upgrading.  Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable.
IPhoto 6 has no way to export keywords with the files, so if you go that way, or import directly from the Originals folder you will lose your keywords.
With 12k files a Managed Aperture Library is easy, and you can change later should you need to.

  • Not all images from iPhoto came into Aperture

I ran an import from iPhoto and I think I am not seeing photos in some albums.
Is it possible this is due to my hiding the Album in iPhoto and if so can someone tell me if there is a good or a global way to unhide all Albums?
Also, can someone tell me if it is possible that I need to unhide all photos as well?
Are there other things I should make sure to do so that everything I can get to Aperture gets to Aperture?
Looking forward to working in this software but I have to get clear of iPhoto first.
    Thanks.

I've been importing referrenced images into Aperture since it was launched. I am also irritated when I set the sort order to Date and as soon as the import starts it changes to Manual.
Are you saying that I have to go back to my hundreds of albums and set each one to be sorted by Date in order for a new import into a new album to be imported already sorted by Date?
                                            Additional trivial complaints follow:
I never import from the camera or the SD card. I move my images onto an external HD where they are arranged by date. The files and the folders are set to sort by date on my HD. Why not follow that protocol when importing?
It was bad enough when v 2.0 came out and decided during the update and "conversion" that my method of sorting and displaying my images which were Year = Project, Month = Folder, Day = folder was incorrect.. Everything was sorted by date because the names of the Project - Folder - folder were all labeled by date : year - month - day. Everything was messed up when Aperture decided I was using the wrong order of storage. So Aperture, without asking, changed the way my images were stored and sorted. It took me weeks to convert them so they would sort & display the way I wanted.

  • Need help adding originals from iphoto library to Aperture

    Hey all,
I have a Macbook Pro 2010 17" i7 that I use for Aperture projects. Previously, my setup worked like this: I was running Snow Leopard, with both Aperture and iPhoto installed. I had all of my photo masters/originals in my iPhoto library, and I referenced them to my Aperture library.
I recently upgraded to a dual SSD+HDD setup and performed a clean install with Mavericks. What I would like to do now - since I don't use iPhoto anymore and I use Aperture exclusively for my photo projects - is to move, not copy, my iPhoto masters into either my current Aperture library, or a new one, if that's necessary. As a test run, I had already consolidated most of my photos before I did the upgrade, but it created many duplicates in my Aperture library: the master copy, and the referenced copy.
Once I get everything moved to Aperture, I will simply delete the iPhoto library, since I won't use it, and all the originals will now reside in the Aperture library. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how to do this, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for the prompt and helpful reply Najinsky!
I originally imported the photos using "Import files" not the actual iPhoto library.
Well I did originally use the Consolidate Original menu item - I can confirm that - but I had done that as a test before I upgraded my hard drive and installed Mavericks.
Additionally, before I tried the Consolidate Original option, I had tried merging the iPhoto library to Aperture via the File->Import->Library and selecting the iPhoto library. I followed the instructions from the Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5296
Because I merged the iPhoto library first, and then Consolidated, this is why I originally had duplicates.
Since the clean install of Mavericks however, I have selected all of my photos in Aperture and selected the Consolidate Original option, and it now appears that everything has changed from referenced to managed. I have also noticed that the Aperture library filesize has gotten much bigger, but the iPhoto library filesize has remained the same size. Wouldn't it have shrunk if I moved the originals to Aperture? I did select Move, not Copy from the Consolidate Original menu.

  • When exporting images from iPhoto library to Aperture 3 library the highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  This happen to all images in the Aperture 3 library, why?

For some reason all the images in Aperture 3 library have had their highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  I can correct them one at a time with contrast control.  This just happen on its on after I uploaded MOuntain Lion.  Now when I go to transfer images from iPhoto this happens.  The images are all right in iPhoto but this is not the case with Apeerture.  I have 15,000 images in Aperture 3 and I can't afford the time to correct them one at a time.  What is it that I did to cause this problem?

You have "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" turned on.
Toggle this on/off from the View menu.
Thresholds are set at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Advanced".  (I have mine set to 100% ~ it's not clear what the scale is.)

  • Upgrade from iPhoto 09 to Aperture 3.3

I am thinking about getting Aperture 3.3 and upgrading from iPhoto 09. I don't think I see an advantage of using iPhoto in the future. Do you still have the option to just convert over to an Aperture library (pre 3.3) without sharing between libraries? Thanks, Jeff

If your current iPhoto version is iPhoto 9.3.x, and you opened the iPhoto Library at least once in this version, you can simply open your iPhoto library in Aperture 9.3.1; no conversion necessary.

  • Importing photos from iPhoto 6 to Aperture 3

I'm trying to important my pictures to aperture 3 but when I go to import it won't allow me. It seems I have to do each folder. Both originals and modified. If I were to select all my photos and drag them onto/into the aperture logo would my pictures transfer over?
Is there a better way perhaps so I could at least keep the years.

To import a Photo Library you need to upgrade to iPhoto 08 at least.
If I were to select all my photos and drag them onto/into the aperture logo would my pictures transfer over?
Better to use the File -> Import commands but note that there is no way to move your keywords or other metadata that you may have added in iPhoto unless you upgrade. Further, if you import the Originals and then the Modifieds then all the photos will be treated as individual pics, so you'll have a rather large duplicate problem.
Is there a better way perhaps so I could at least keep the years.
You can find all the photos from any given year with a quick smart album.

  • Should I move from iPhoto 11 to Aperture?

I've been using iphoto for probably around 7 years. During which time I've experienced a couple of catastrophic library corruptions but was able to restore from backup. The most recent of which was today!
For me the safety of my photo library is probably the most important thing on my computer.
I'd like to hear opinions if it's a good idea to move to aperture. If I do it will be for photo organization and tools rather than photo editing. I do have a copy of Elements 10.
Thanks for the opinions in advance
    Steve.

    Impossible to say, really.
Believe it or not but iPhoto 11 uses the same database engine as Aperture 3, so it should be equally robust. It is certainly true that there are a lot less of the "Oh No iPhoto Lost All My Photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" type posts on this forum - and a lot less exclamation marks too - but then it's reasonable to infer that many of the users here are more experienced users than on the iPhoto forum. That may account for the difference.
Aperture is a much more powerful app than iPhoto and there is a learning curve. The opportunities for organising are more varied and flexible, but also more complex. It's much much better with Referenced Libraries.
Aperture is geared to the Pro shooter who shoots high volumes and probably Raw. If you're shooting Jpeg and low volume it may be overkill. If you're a serious hobbyist it definitely has value. If you're taking snaps of the kid's birthday party to send to GrandMa it may be overkill. So it really depends on the kind of photographer that you are.
The best thing to do is to download the free trial -
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/
import a few hunderd images and explore. The tutorials here
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/aperture.html
are well worth a look too.
Regardless of which you choose you will always need a good back up - or several...

  • Migrating from iPhoto '08 to Aperture 3.1 problems

    Hi,
I am hoping somebody can help me.
I have a MBP and have been filling up my hard drive with photos over the past couple of years, always importing them into iPhoto.
The problem is my hard drive is now nearly full and what I would really like to do is keep all my photos OFF the laptop hard drive and mirrored onto two external drives instead, thus freeing up a ton of space on my MBP and protecting my photos at the same time.
I looked into it and I can't really do this with iPhoto but I can with Aperture so I upgraded to Aperture.
OK so far so good. The problem is when I tried to get my Aperture to import my iPhoto library. It said it needed 16GB of free space in order to execute this so I found ways to get that with room to spare (23GB) and started the import process. Now it has sucked up he 23GB and says the hard drive has run out of free space. The photos appear to have all been imported BUT it is still processing the photos it has imported and this seems to be what is continuing to suck up the free space.
I want to get to the point where I can tell Aperture to move the photos off of the laptop hard drive but I'm afraid to do that while it says it is still processing photos. But whenever I make more room on the hard drive it just consumes the free space again. I am running out of other files to move off my computer to make more room. I have no idea how much room Aperture will demand in the end before it will stop consuming free space on the hard drive.
Can anyone give me advice. I'm afraid to do anything that might cause me to lose photos. My goal again is to get all my photos stored off my computer and mirror them so that they are backed up on two external hard drives at once.
Once that is done I would be happy to discard the superfluous iPhoto library on the computer to save space (no need to be able to access the photos in iPhoto after I'm done.)
Please advise as I'm stuck in the middle of this process and I don't know what to do.
    Thanks.

I have to tell you, I've been avoiding doing so out of fear it may destabilise my system, especially cause installed software to go wonky.
You are right, to be careful. MacOS 10.6.8 is a very good and stable system, and I would not give it up needlessly. But now the new versions of both Aperture and iPhoto do need the latest Lion version. So you will be left out, if you do not upgrade.
If you ever take the plunge, take the following precautions:
Check which of your installed Applications that youdepend on are still PowerPC Applications and require the Rosetta environment. These applications will not run with Lion. Select the application in the Finder and choose "Get Info" from the File menu; if the application is listed as being Universal, it is o.k.,If the application is listed as Application (PowerPC), it will require Rosetta on an Intel Mac, and it never will run with MacOS X 10.7 or later. Try to upgrade all PowerPC applications to "universal" or "Intel" applications before you upgrade the system.
Make sure you have your regular Time Machine backup.
Create a bootable clone of your current system on an external disk and check it carefully before you upgrade. This way you will be able to revert to the old system easily, or simply boot from the one, if you need to run older software that does not run with Lion.
Rebuild your Aperture Library with the Aperture 3 first AId Tools before upgrading and make sure, you have a backup of your library.

  • From iPhoto to Aperture

    Hi there,
    Aperture pre-purchase concerns and Q's
According to <http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/> it's 15- or 17-inch PowerBook G4 with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4 processor , and thus, my PB 17, 1.67, with 2GB of RAM is OK to run Aperture under OS 10.4.11...

    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Display:
    Status: No display connected
Seems to meet the Tech Specs too....
My Internal 100GB HD is almost full, and I need 5GB of disk space for application, sample projects, and tutorial... So I gotta take a lot of photos etc off my Internal and move them to External FWHD's. But that is gonna take me time..
So here are a few Q's that Apple Care couldn't answer today, but at least they steered me here!
I am using iPhoto 6.0.6 and iLife 07... Can I move my iPhoto Library to External HD, Delete it from Internal to create space for Aperture Install, and then Import that iPhoto Library into Aperture? Will the Keywords, Comments etc = Metadata survive that Import?
Here is my Ultimate Goal: Asset Management!!!! = One Maser Library, Limitless Growth or trackable photos
Just like Aperture promo says -- I want a Bird's Eye View of all my photos via Aperture, and on Internal HD keep my Select one's only, and move photos back and forth between Internal and External without losing Keywords and other Metadata?!
Is my PB17 strong enough to run such set up?
Also, if I decide to Upgrade this PB17 to Leopard, I'd need even more space for Archive and Install method of Installation... Will Aperture "survive" that transition?
When I buy MacBook Pro, how do I get my Aperture "universe" transferred from my PB17?
Would I have to buy another Aperture, or can I use it on both laptops, or move it to MacBook Pro?
I am not a pro photographer, by I do tons of point and shoot with my S500 Canon digital camera...
I want to carry around on my laptop my favorites, Select photos, and when I am back home, and plug all my external FWHD's into my PB, I want to have access to ALL my photos!
Of course, non destructive editing sounds like a dream too with the respect to disk space!
Another concern is -- how long has Aperture 1.5 been out? I'd be ticked off if I bought it now, and in less than a month, Steve Jobs announced Aperture 2.0, and I had to pay for another upgrade!
Will Aperture 1.5 play nice with iPhoto 6.0.6 and iLife 07? I'd prefer not to buy iLife 08, since I'd be getting that with MacBook Pro, but not till after Macworld 2007!
    This promo video
<http://seminars.apple.com/seminarsonline/aperture15iphoto/apple/index1.html> makes it all look really easy, and it might but...
I hope this Forum helps me make this transition. Please include any and all URL links... I am pretty eager to start with Aperture, rather than lose my Keywords and Comments in iPhoto, after I move photos in bunches off my Internal...
Is there a way to configure my profile in this Forum, so that I'd be notified whenever there is a response posted to this post! Hope yes!
Thanks in advance to all for any help!

    Scott,
Thanks a lot for your reply...
Let me put this back into my present context...
I am down to 2.8 of free space on my 100GB Internal HD on PB G4, 1.67, 2GB RAM...
Can I move my iPhoto library to External, make sure it works there, then Delete it on Internal, thus freeing up space to install Aperture, then Import my Select Shots into Aperture on Internal?!
    Hey.
One quick thing: the export and then import will keep your keywords, ratings,
so on and so forth. Bone up on the Aperture method of a managed library versus
    a referenced import.
That will save you lots of time and frustration. I
personally do a managed library, but my organizational skills are pretty good.
I don't want stuff all over the place when I have to get to it.
Is there a PDF Manual or some place where I could read about managed library versus a referenced import.
Also, I do plan on having a Dedicated FWHD for all my photos. The idea being to have a Folder that I could back up, with ALL photos in it - Internal Selects and External
    Also, bone up
on the issue of Aperture generating Previews. Trust me. If you do you'll get a
    good sleep at night.
Is there a PDF Manual or some place where I could read about Aperture generating Previews.
If you do some heavy P&S shooting you're gonna grow your library quick. In
iPhoto I started splitting libraries at the 10,000 image mark. Now, a few
years after, I realize that a lot of that was unnecessary, and I'm purging the
libraries. Too much junk in there!
So, I guess that doesn't apply to me?
If you have so many of your own shots you can probably do without installing
the sample projects. Just a thought...
Are sample projects part of Aperture Tutorials?
How many systems do you have, or are going to have, to run Aperture on? PB17,
then upgrade to Leopard, then a MBP? Perhaps you could minimize the hops and
go from your PB to a kitted out MBP. That would save you a lot of
administrative hoopla and allow you time to USE Aperture, and not keep
    configuring it...
I only have PB17, and I need Aperture mostly for Freeing up Space on Internal, and Organizing my Photos. Then I got to finish a bunch of other PRIORITY project. Getting MacBook Pro would be a Premature Detour. When the other projects are done, I'll get a bigger bang for my Hardware $$
Aperture 2.0! Oh, aren't we all dreaming of it. It's technology for you. Wait
for the new version (and use no version now) or use a version now and get the
new one later. I just picked up Aperture 1.5.6 after waiting from the rumor
period years ago. It's worth it, for me, because I'm using it NOW. Now m ore
abstract thought about it. When 2.0 comes out I'm waiting for Leopard
compatibility and bug fixes before jumping in.
What's not clear is how long this Aperture been out? But even though, I am thinking of waiting till after Macworld as far as Aperture and all things Mac.

I figured it out right after posting:) Thanks. That's how your post came to me via email -- great!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!
My suggestion: get Aperture now. Learn it and use it now. Get your MBP with
iLife 08 pre-installed when you can. Rock on.
That's probably what I'll do, most likely AFTER Macworld. Till then, I could use PhotoPresenter http://www.arizona-software.ch/ which basically does what I would like to do with Aperture as far as keeping track of the Photos but FAR less deeply as far as Keywords:), never mind Non Destructive Editing, Versioning etc.
Can Aperture work with iPhoto 6.0.6. Ilife 07?
BTW, this > symbol thing works great!!! I pasted your text as a Quote in my Entourage, Office 2004, Email. Inserted my Comments, and pasted it back into my Post here!!! Looks great!!! Who knew:)?!?!
BTW, " Bone up" -- that's some funny English:)! But, let's be adult here, or I'll forget why I even posted here:):):!!!! Again THANKS for you Reply... I just want some to address my Original Post point by point, cause, as we all know, the devil is in the details..:)!
And, if they use that Quoting Scheme, as I described 2 paragraphs above, it will even more clear as far as putting it all in a context -- ala dialog...
    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
