Importing from my JVC GR-DV X4

I have quiet an old DV camera. After plugging the camera to the firewire port, it seems impossible to import the video within iMovie using the import window. It does not come from my camera since it was working with my former PC !
I am a switcher an one of the main reason for me to leave my PC is the video capabilites of Macs. So I am so disappointed ! Can anybody help me ?

Interesting I have the same problem, though I was previously able to import from the same camera (JVC GR-DV X4) now it does not work. Very frustrating, don't know if a bugfix created this problem for me. Can I go back to an older version of iMovie?
Problem in detail:
When iMovie is on and I start my connected camcorder the import window starts. When choosing manual I can play and rewind the movie and watch it in the import view on the Mac. But when I choose import it does not work, no picture appear but I hear sound and the timecode in the import window tics on correctly, but the record time does not start to tic but still the record light is red. When I try automatic the import start and sound is heard but no image is seen and after just a short while the import stops automatically and rewinds the tape without anything captured. When using manual, like I said; I can playback in import view of iMovie. But when I press import the recording starts as described above TC ticking in import window but not on recorder timer. Nothing is captured.
The thing is I used the same camcorder a couple of months ago and then it worked, can a new bugfix have created the problem for me? When it worked I used a 4-4 firewire, now I use a 4-6 firewirer. But as playback works fine it does not seem to be the cable that is the problem it has to be iMovie! TC is turned on at my camcorder. Please Help!!! To use my new iMac for movies was one of my main priorities!!!

  • Importing from a JVC GR-D50 camcorder - is it possible?

    Hi,
I have a JVC GR-D50 digital video camcorder which isn't listed on the apple webpage as being supported by iMovie and iMovie doesn't seem to be able to find the video when connected.
I'd love to be able to import from my camera to iMovie - does anyone know of a way to do this?
    Thanks!
    Chloe

    Hi Chloe,
thanx for giving us feedback, we all profit of sharing your experiences with us.....
And that is a stange one!
normally, you connect your camcorder (which is in playback mode), switch the little symbol to "camera" and have full remote control, e.g. there's a "rewind" button below the big window... to need a "manually rewind" is a bit odd... but great, your workaround works.... comes into the never been published book "More Voodoo Tricks™ for iMovie"........

  • Importing from a JVC GY-HM100U?

I work for a small nonprofit and we recently received a grant for a nice JVC GY-HM100U HD video cam. We're going to create video content highlighting our work and the work of artists and musicians from Appalachia.
I took the camera out for a test run the other night, and all went well until I tried to import the files from the shoot into iMovie '11. No go.
I looked online and saw that the JVC camera uses a professional-level codec (XDCam) that is not recognized by iMovie. I saw this discussion and followed the steps, but it made no difference. I can view the clips in QuickTime, but cannot import them into iMovie.
Does anyone know of any other workarounds? The only solution I see is to upgrade to FCP X, but I hate to do that unless it's necessary.
    Thanks.

To get the XDCAM codec, you need FCP X. Once you have it, you could edit in FCP.
I think it is likely you could edit the files in iMovie if a licensed copy of FCP is on the same machine. But I cannot say for sure since I do not have any XDCAM footage to test. Worst case, you could edit in FCP, which should produce great results, but there is a learning curve. I would figure $299 for the software and another $100 in training (if you get one of the online video tutorials).
If you want to try the Perian solution, I would get an App called MPEG Streamclip (which is free). It is available from Squared 5. Then with Perian installed, convert the XDCAM files to Apple Intermediate Codec. This Apple Intermediate Codec file should import into iMovie.
Disclaimer: I have not tried this myself.
Congratulations. That is a great camera.
LET ME ADD...Because I have no way to test this, I would recommend that you find someone with FCPX  and iMovie both installed and try it to see if it works. One way to do this would be to take it to the Apple Store, although the Apple employees might not understand the question.
Better still if you could find a video professional that had both installed. They could walk you through it and find at least one way to do it.
Even if they have FCP 7 installed they should be able to test this.
For the Perian solution, which is free, you might want to test yourself. Let me know if you need help with MPEG Streamclip.

  • Importing from a JVC

We have just purchased a JVC GZ-MG20U hard disk camcorder and it does not have an outlet for a fire wire. How do you import the video into iMovie or Final Cut Express?

We have just purchased a JVC GZ-MG20U hard disk
camcorder and it does not have an outlet for a fire
wire. How do you import the video into iMovie or
    Final Cut Express?
Hi - if you connect it with the USB cable does your MAC see the camera as a volume. If so you can -
    1. copy the MOD files (as thats the extension the files will have if the camera saves them the same as my JVC GZ MC200) to you hard drive.
    2. change the MOD extension to MPG
    3. either use the MAC software that ships with the JVC camcorder to convert the files to DV, or use for example Streamclip to convert them
You will also need the mpeg plug in for Qtime to play the files as well.
    Hope that helps

  • Capture/Import from HDD JVC USB camera?

I'm new to the HDD cameras. I've got a friends JVC HDD Everio camcorder. It also says mini SD on it for what that's worth.
I've looked into the Log and Transfer method, when I open that up I don't see any video coming into the browser. The camera is mounted on my desktop. When I navigate to that in the Log and Transfer browser it says that there are no supported files?
Does that mean I can't use FCE 4 to capture these video files. iMovie sees the video clips fine. But my movie project is in FCE 4 and I'd like to stay away from iMovie if I can.
Please help or steer me where I can find the help. Thanks!

Tom, it's an honor to have you devote some time to my question!
I'm trying to find a model number: I think the serial number is GZ-MG360BU if that helps. I just did a search on that number and google pulled up the right product at best buy. That might give you more info.
I don't see anything indicating that it's true HD. I think my friends think that because the camera has HDD all over it. I see Micro SD HC. I'm not sure what that means as far as the type of video this thing produces.
To throw in another question, I'm going to be in the market for a new camcorder. I've been using a now obsolete miniDV camcorder. I like using tapes and capturing via fire wire. Is there any advantage to these HDD camcorders? If i'm going to stick to tape, what recommendations do you have for compatibility with FCE 4? I guess I should add that I'd like to go true HD affordably.
    Thanks again!

  • Importing from a JVC GY-HM150U

    Hello,
I just got this JVC GY-HM150U camcorder, and the files are not recognized by iMovie.  I tried Finalcut Express, and same problem.  I haven't tried FCPX yet, but I am guessing it will be the same.
I am using many versions of OSX and iMovie, since I work with a media lab of 30 machines.  Strangely enough, I managed to get it to import on one laptop which is using iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795) on OSX 10.8.5.  But it doesn't work an iMac with the same software configuration.
    Thanks for any advice.
    -Matt

    According to:
    http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp
this impressive beast has a big choice of recording formats and it is supposed to work with FCP.   Which formats have you tried?  .mp4 should be OK.

  • Importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11

I am having trouble importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11.  The import screen shows up and recognizes the camera with the time counter activating but there is no image on the screen and the record or import buttons do not seem to do anything.  I have followed the instructions from the manual and others found online.  Someone please help.  Terry

    Hi Brady,
I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...
    Good luck,
    Roger

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
    Here is a link.

    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

  • Importing Video From My JVC GZ-HD3 HHD Camcorder to iMovie 08

    Hello,
Im having problem importing videos to iMovie 08 from my JVC GZ-HD3 HHD Camcorder, its like if iMovie doesn't recognize the Camcorder.

As the camera isn't listed on 's supported devices you may need to confirm that it will work or not. You may also want to read the instructions that came with the camera to ensure you are doing everything in the correct order.

  • Import from JVC

The docs say I can use a JVC Everio with 09
    I have a GZ-HD7
iMovie 09 recognises the camera but fails to import
    How do I do it?
    Henry

Unfortunately, as great a mid-level camcorder as the JVC GZ-HD7 is, iMovie doesn't support importing from the camera's native .TOD files. In order to import footage that I shot I use Final Cut Pro to log and capture the footage using the RCA 3 to 1 that came included with your camcorder plugged into an external bridge. I believe that the same process should work within iMovie but this requires purchasing an external bridge and it obviously takes away one of the best features of the camera, it's crystal clear HD. There is probably a way to get a HD bridge but I don't believe that iMovie would support this import.
If anyone else has a better way to do it, please let us know, thanks in advance.

  • How to use .mod files from a JVC camcorder?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to find the proper workflow for using .mod files from a JVC Everio model camcorder. I was able to transfer the files onto my system by simply using the included usb cable from the unit. It simply mounted the camera's flash card on my desktop and I was able to drag all of the files from it.
As others have posted, the .mod files are not accessible using the Import function in FCP. I am able to open them with MPEGStreamClip as other have suggested. My question is, how should the files be converted to use with FCP and/or DVDSP? In MPEGStreamclip the file shows the video stream as: 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 16:9, 29.97 fps, 8.40 Mbps, upper field first. I tried a few of the demux functions. The straight demux to .m2v & .ac3 yields a file that opens in QT, but it shows up as a 640x480 file and is noticably squeezed. Using the demux unscaled yields a file that opens in QT as a 720x480 file and looks somewhat better. And using the demux to headed yields as file that opens in QT as 720x404 and presumably is the correct 16:9 ratio.
Trying to use those same files in DVDSP didn't get me very far. If I create a new HD project in DVDSP I can import the straight demuxed file and the headed file. The unscaled file won't import. If I add the imported files to tracks the straight demuxed one will play in the simulator but the headed one simply shows a green screen.
I'm hoping that since MPEGStreamclip can play the files, its just a question of figuring out the proper export/conversion settings. My end goal is to produce a dvd of the footage (not exactly sure if I should be using an HD project or a SD project set to letterbox). I also need to produce a web-ready version of the footage. I haven't tried this yet but I'm assuming that one of the QT exports from MPEGStreamclip will get this done correctly.
Hopefully someone has a workable solution for these files.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi all,
I looked further on this forum and found others that had the same problem. One suggested connecting the cam corder first, then start iMovie, then wait for a few minutes. I did this and it worked!!!!!
    Problem solved.
    Thanks.

  • Import Problems with JVC EVERIO HD7 Hard Drive Camcorder

So i just got this new camcorder and low and behold the format it puts out the video in isnt accepted by iMovie HD, the files are in .MOI and .TOD format, any help on getting formatting them right would be greatly appreciated

I've been having the same problem - trying to import files from a JVC GZ HD-10 and the files not being recognised. I've downloaded the QT components as per the above post, but when I try to install them I get this message:
'The installer can't detect an earlier version or proper version for installing this upgrade. Close this message box to end the installation procedure.'
What exactly can't it detect an earlier version of? Does it mean Quicktime? Final cut Pro? Has anyone found a way to successfully import files from a JVC camcorder directly into a Mac with the same spec as mine?

  • I want to remove all of my photos out of iPhoto there are approximately 35000 some imported from an old hard drive and a SD Card from my Nikon D500 how do I do this

I want to remove all of my photos out of iPhoto there are approximately 35000 some imported from an old hard drive and a SD Card from my Nikon D500 how do I do this?
    I have iPhoto version 9.1.5 (615)
    Mac OS X version 10.6.8
I want to do this because when I imported from my old hard drive there was an error message stating that 12 photos were not imported as the programm did not recognise the format even though they were jpegs like the other photos in that particular album. The dates of the photo folders are wrong I have multiple copies of photos and every time I start iPhoto I get the following message 12 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that were not imported would you like to import them No or Yes
if you press Yes the same message comes back again and if you press Yes again the program flicks to last import for 2 seconds and then opens events.
if you press No the message The photos have been placed in the folder/user/judith/pictures/iphoto Library recovered photos then if you press OK the original message 12 photos have been found.............
if you press No at this point the message The photos have been placed in the folder/user /judith/pictures/iphoto Library recovered photos_11 the end number goes up by 1 every time you go through this process
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Did you import an iPhoto Library from the old Hard Drive? Do you still have that old Library?
The way to clear out a Library is to Export the photos - Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
    For the annoying start-up message:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
