Importing from tape via firewire - event name created, but no content saved

I'm importing from my camcorder tape via firewire. Some recordings work just fine and I get the event into iMovie '09 v 8.0.5 (820) . Other events on the same tape don't import. When I import those events manually, an event name gets created in the event window, but there is no content in it. Any thoughts??
One confusing little addition - sometimes when those events are being imported and the scenes are bad quality (e.g., broken up a bit) they DO import. But when I rewind the tape and try to import them again with the picture coming in better, they DON'T work.

Are all your clips DV? Are some HDV?

  • Having trouble outputing to tape via firewire

I'm trying to output to tape via firewire. However I'm only recording audio and not video. Device control preset is Firewire NTSC. Video playback preset is Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)
    Any suggestion?

Make sure the your Video out is set to ALL FRAMES along with the firewire.
I've no experience with the deck so can't offer any help with it's settings.
As a trouble shooting measure, does the video show up if you use another DV/Analog converter (then on to a TV monitor to visually verify)?

  • Export a file to DV tape via Firewire?

Can I export a DV file, or for that matter any file, onto a DV tape via the 1394 Firewire port? This may sound strangely retro, but I'd like to try using DV tape as a backup for some irreplaceable files. I envision getting a MiniDV deck or camcorder to use as a tape drive backup. The background issue is the possibly short lifespan of home-burned DVDs and CDs and even hard drives.
    G4 1GHz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   new WD 250 Gb drive

You want to use your camera to store files that are currently stored on your Mac, right? Any file, not just a DV file. Your goal is NOT to export a DV file to the camera as video. Rather, you want to export it is a data file you can someday re-import to your Mac's hard disk. Right?
I recall a conversation here long ago about third-party software that exported files to a camera as you describe. Sorry, I don't recall its name. It was a guy who had written it, if I recall, not a commercial software company.
I'd be very, very careful relying on such a method to store files. Perhaps it can be done reliably, I don't know, but I'd be very careful.
I'm more familiar with software that stores Mac backups on a variety of media, including DAT tapes using a DAT tape drive. Retrospect, the commercial backup application, is one such application. Backups stored on tape can be very reliable, but it relies on very reliable, carefully tested software.
Retrospect stores the backup files in a Retrospect-readable format. The tape catalog Retrospect stores on our hard disk tells Retrospect where to retrieve the files from the tape. As we retrieve those files, Retrospect converts them back into Mac files.
Keep in mind that data files must stored perfectly on the tape. If just one byte off, the file may be garbage. With video, a tiny error probably won't be seen in the image played at 30 frames per second. We don't notice one blue pixel that plays red. But in a data file, the error could be catastrophic.
A better solution may be to buy a big, cheap hard drive. Or two, for redundancy.

  • Premiere CS 5.0.3 problem export to tape via firewire

    hi
My problem is that i can't able to export a sequence into a tape dv by firewire
    I use premiere cs5.0.3, matrox rtx2hd, win 7 and a sony hvr-M15J
I've not problem to IMPORT tape from a matrox sequence neither from a premiere sequence but I CAN'T export to tape (i use firewire connecting my hvr-15j to matrox rtx2)
    My workflow
I create a premiere sequence, the device control is online, in sequence setting>Playback setting i set DV 25i (720 x 576) but  when i start to export to tape my sony hvr start to rec, timecode going on but it's all black and no audio
i try different setting in playback setting but nothing change, what's the problem?
Device control is online but maybe i have to change setting ofsony  hvr-M15j ? The strange thing is that I've not problem to import dv tape
    please help me
    thanks

Matrox has no bearing on this - RTX2 just passes video through. It uses Adobe settings for capture and export.
Make sure your playback settings reflect what you are trying to export. Try this:
    1. External Device set to DV, etc.
    2. Audio button set to "External Device Audio"
    3. External Device set to your DV device, not None.
    4. MPE set to software only in the Project panel.

  • Simultaneous import of video via firewire and audio via in-line audio port

I have a converter that takes the S-video and audio input from my DVR then converts both to DV format, and then outputs via firewire. I hook the firewire up to my G5, open iMovieHD, and the application recognizes that as a camera and imports wonderfully.
Well, the audio comes through with a MAJOR buzz or hum. It's probably the converter, but the buzz/hum is not enjoyable.
So, I removed the audio from the converter, and the video converts wonderfully in iMovie without the audio. I have the audio coming in through my audio line-in.
I start to import my video, and iMovie starts recording the video. But I want to record the line-in audio at the same time. But when I switch to audio to turn on the input from the line-in, the video stops capturing.
When I start to capture audio first, then switch to capture video, then the audio stops capturing.
Is there any way that I can capture the video via firewire for one "track", and my line-in audio for the other "track", and have them play simultaneously in iMovie during capture??
Any help would be appreciated. thanks Adam

    hey there badkitty 42,
i don't think you can do that. it sounds like your issue is electrical. try turning the plug around on each piece of gear in the chain & listen for the buzz. if it's not heard you've found the cause of your ground loop. you can also pick up some of the 3-prong orange or grey electrical adapters from Lowe's or Home Depot to see if you can "lift the ground" to get rid of the buzz. i'd try one on the convertor 1st. one last thing, do you have any flourescent lights in use on the same circuit or in proximity to where you're doing your transcoding? these are notorious for inducing 60Hz hum in audio & video gear.
    good luck.

  • Record HV20 'live' instead of from tape using firewire?

I can capture from a tape in the Canon HV20 using FCP6.
Is it possible to record 'live' (not from tape) from the HV20 using firewire, or is this only possible with HDMI?

gogiangigo - When I searched for 'LIVE RECORDING' as suggested in that link, the only thread I found that seemed to actually tell how to do this mentioned:
Match the sequence settings to the cam setting
Open the log and capture window.
    See the device to noncontrollable.
Click capture now and esc to stop.
However, I've been unable to get this to work.
The Command-8 'Log & Capture" simply asks for a file name, and then aborts with 'the end of tape has been encountered'
I tried setting the 'device control preset' to non-controllable (from HDV firewire used to capture from tape), but got the same message.
The 'Log & Capture' window never opens with any additional tabs or the 'capture' button (as the on-line docs seem to suggest should be there, even for non-controllable).
So, I must be missing something very obvious?

  • IMovie clip length when importing from tape

Having used iMove HD without any problems and up until now have imported video into an eMac, I know but it works, then copied the DV files to my new Macbook Pro laptop for editing.
Now I have the firewire adaptor for this MacBook Pro I have successfully imported a tape into iMovie 10 but now am completely stuck.
Each clip is one second long (5 minutes with iMovieHD and adjustable) and I can't do anything with the whole import.
If I select more than on clip any export function is unavailable. Thought I would export all the clips as one file then re-import as a work a round.
There is also no timeline for editing. The screen shows all the one second 733 clips (12 minutes).
Lastly, I have no problem editing video imported as a digital file, i.e. DV
I may be missing something, but its certainly not intuitive.
    What's wrong?

    Hi
    Help - No I've not got iMovie'13 v.10
    But a thought.
I would bring in iMovie HD6 (if you got that one - iMovie HD5 doesn't work) into Your New Mac - as it is 100% DV friendly.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Importing from DVD via Handbrake problems...

HI folks. I've taken a DVD of our ancestors, that is a simple set of chapters of movies. I used handbrake to convert to mp4 but Final Cut Pro 6 is telling me it cannot import the video because unknown errors. If I drag and drop, the File error, unknown file. When I try to Log and transfer it in, it says it has an invalid directory structure.
However, the mp4 plays just fine in Quicktime 7 and exported from QT to QTmov it plays as well. It will not import from QT Mov either, although the file is too small for my needs.
I'm creating a family heritage dvd. Any suggestions? Do a I need a different, $$ pro, translator?
    Thanks
    Jeff

The information you have been provided is incomplete. Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback plugin gives QuickTime the ability to play MPEG-2 files, including .VOB DVD files. Theoretically this should allow import into Apple's video editing apps. HOWEVER, I found that my DVD recorder's VOBs must encode AC3 audio or some other audio spec not supported by the plugin because the audio in the files do not play through the plugin. YYMV. At the same time, though, MPEG Streamclip is able to properly play the files back with the plugin installed, whereas without the plugin it cannot read MPEG2. My current workflow is to open the .VOB files with MPEG Streamclip, then export them to QuickTime, then import them to Final Cut, which while requiring rendering, seems to be a good amount faster than rendering from .VOB to .MP4 using an app like iSquint. It's still not ideal because of the plugin audio issue, but it's better than what I was doing previously.

  • Import from tape- One shot/one clip

When I import my raw footage from tape, I would like each shot to automatically become its own clip.  Is this possible with FCPX?

Thanks Tom.  I think I've figured out the problem.  The first few tapes I captured were recorded in a Sony DCR VX1000.  They were each captured as one long clip. When I tried tapes recorded in a VX2000 (which I also use as my playback deck), each shot was captured as it's own clip.  Interesting....

  • Displaying fullscreen images from camera via firewire

I have clients that want to be able to see the image I take with my camera instantly after I take it. So I hook my camera to my MacBook Pro via firewire, take the shot at the camera and then I WANT the image to appear full screen or close to full screen size on my laptop. I had one poster on another forum say that Aperture can do this. I can't figure out how. Any ideas?

You can absolutely do this - although depending on your camera it might more likely be via USB. What you're describing is tethered shooting. I do it all the time with my D300 and it works perfectly. You can set yourself up in fullscreen mode and watch your pictures come up within a few seconds of shooting.
If your camera is supported you simply plug it in (via usb or firewire - usually usb), select File>Tether>Start Session and you're ready.
When I'm shooting still life, I like to fire a shot or two, do a few quick adjustments to get the look I'm after and stamp the keepers as I go along and refine the setup. It's a great way to get a real feel for what you're attempting.
There's a list of supported cameras on the Aperture site- I don't have the link handy though.
    Good luck!

  • Event is created but photos are not in it

I recently put iPhoto11 on my husband's Mac. I saved the library then uninstalled it from my old Mac. I didn't have any problems putting the old library into the new computer but it coincided with the last update. I'm not sure if the problem is with the update or with the new installation.
I download photos from my SD card. It creates an event and they show up in "last import". Then I click on the event (which will say under the key photo how many photos there are) and when in the event it says "there are no photos". They are all gone. I go back out and there is my key photo with the number of photos that are supposed to be in that event but they are not in there. The photos will show up in the library temporarily, as well as last import and I have tried adding them to albums, but if I log out of iPhoto then log back in the event is gone and so are all the photos I just downloaded. They are not in the albums I put them in or in "last import".
Where do I begin to troubleshoot?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I recently backed up my iPad and then I restored it to factory settings. Now, I want to restore it from the back up that I created, but it will not accept my Apple ID password. Is there any way that I can save my data?

    Hi,
As I have said in the title, I was supposed to do a restore on my iPad for work. I backed up the device and then I restored it to factory settings as I was instructed. Now that all of that is complete, I tried to restore it from the back up point I created and it will not recognize my Apple ID password.  I really hope that I won't lose all of my data, but I don't know what else to do. I have tried entering my password numerous times. I really hope that someone can help me.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

Wow, you are even more paranoid than me. Those are some good steps to take before upgrade. My upgrade went smooth, so I will list you my steps and you can compare.
    1. Turn off iPod completely (hold sleep, slide to power off)
    2. Download and install iTunes 8.2, reboot computer
    3. Turn on iPod and sync to new iTunes (this was my biggest fear since 8.2 is known for sync problems with touch and iphone)
    4. Buy, download and install 3.0 (total time around 40 min.)
    5. Eject from iTunes, power on/off (note: your app icons are gonna be all over the place across 4 pages so you have to do some rearranging
    6. Sync again
    7. Check wifi and reset network settings on iPod if signal is weak, or reset your router (I didn't have to do any of this but I reset my network setting on iPod anyway)
    8. Enjoy

  • Can't import from camcorder to firewire drive

I'm having no luck importing video from a digital camcorder to an external firewire drive (using iMovie 6). The playback is OK, but when I try to import the screen quickly goes blue and the importing stops (I get about .5 second of video in a clip before it stops).
This only happens when I'm saving clips to the external drive. If I save the project on my internal hard drive, video imports fine. I've tried with the camcorder daisy-chained through the firewire drive (on my ibook), and plugged into a separate port (on an old iMac w/ dual firewire).
Could it be my firewire drive is too slow to record the video? It's an Acomdata E5, 320gb 400 Mbps drive, formatted Mac OS extended (journaled).
I tried to measure the speed of the disk using Xbench, but not sure how to interpret the results:

You don't say which camcorder you're using.
Many Canon camcorders will NOT work properly with anything else, e.g; an external disc, on the FireWire circuit. Sorry. For those, you'd need to import to the internal disc and then copy to the external, and continue editing with the external drive.
"..Could it be my firewire drive is too slow to record the video?.." No: all modern external FW drives are perfectly fast enough, and a 320gb is certainly a modern drive.
"..formatted Mac OS extended (journaled).." ..are you absolutely CERTAIN..? ..It needs to be, otherwise it'll do just as you describe. And even discs bought for Macs or from Mac stores generally come formatted as "PC Exchange", i.e; MS-DOS formatted. Check it again by right-clicking or Ctrl-clicking it and use 'Get Info'. If it really says "Mac OS Extended" you're OK. If not, you'll need to use Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, select the name of the disc and click the 'Erase' tab (after you've moved off the disc anything which you might want to keep) and then select 'Mac OS Extended'. CAUTION: be sure that you've selected the external drive: don't accidentally reformat and wipe your internal drive!
"..Are there any settings I can adjust or other things to try?.." No. However..
Some camcorders are not properly recognised by iMovie at first. It pays to open a project which already has some footage in it, play that and then attach the camcorder and try importing. Playing back some existing DV footage often - in my experience, anyway - 'kick starts' the program into accepting more footage from the attached device.
But that only works if (a) the drive DEFINITELY is formatted as Mac OS Extended, and (b) you're NOT using a Canon with an external disc..

  • Successfully imported from TRV 460 firewire for D8 but fails to record from translated Hi8 or 8 even though images and audio is received.

TRV460 can play back newer format D8 as well as old formats Hi8 and 8 tapes.  According to manual and comments I've seen on e-bay and internet blogs when it outputs the playback for old Hi8 and 8 tapes it translates them to a digital signal on the firewire connection between my sony camcorder TRV460 and macbook Pro.   If I'm using a D8 tape it works fine.  If I'm using an 8 formated tape the image and audio appear on the import playback.  But when I try to record there is a warning message that data is missing.  If this is a sony problem how is it that the imovie succussfully provides the visual and audio?  It would appear the digital is sent.  Seems to me like it must be an imovie issue?  But I'm not sure.
    Can anyone help.

If I understand this correctly, then you have an Optimus graphics card (couldn't find anything online, but your lspci looks like it). I too have such a setup on my laptop. The thing to keep in mind here, is that your main graphics card is the Intel integrated card. So instead of installing your system like with an nvidia card, you install it like an intel card. Specifically, you would want to follow the instructions on Bumblebee. Once you followed them, the whole graphics part runs on the Intel card. Once you want to play a game or do some other heavy graphics card work you call your application like this:
    optirun wine /path/to/game.exe
Notice how optirun tells the system to use the nvidia card. It will take a second or two to start it (specifically, enable the card, start another X screen and launch the application on it transparently). Follow the instructions in the Wiki if you have any problems.
If you don't have an Optimus card (just NVIDIA, no Intel), then don't follow any Optimus instructions, just usual NVIDIA stuff from the Wiki.
