Importing graphics into FCE

Hi
I'm trying to draw with a vector graphics drawing program and export to FCE... but the graphics do not look quite right in FCE... Well actually they look OKish in the viewer but wrong in the canvas...
Can anyone help?

If by wrong you mean low quality, you must keep in mind that DV has a much lower resolution than any graphic you may create.
What you see in the viewer is the original file, even though adapted to the viewer window size. When editing the graphic to the timeline, the DV codec is applied and you can see the result in the canvas: this is usually worse than the original, for graphics.
As a suggestion you should always check the resulting quality of your editing, by connecting an interlaced monitor (e.g. a TV) to your Mac using the firewire port and a D/A converter (or your camcorder). What you see in this case may be better (or sometimes worse...) than in the canvas; but at least you can tune your editing and effects in real time. This of corse if tour movie will be burned to a DVD or played directly to a TV.

  • IMPORTING FOOTAGE INTO FCE AND MERGING FILES WITH FINAL CUT STUDIO

So I recently purchased Final Cut Express to create off-line, rough cut projects...to be completed by more qualified editors other than myself. But I want to make sure that Final Cut Express is the right system for me.
    Here are my questions:
1.) I will be using a variety of video formats for this system, and will be ingesting primarily through a shared media drive. Should I be concerned by the fact that it says I can only use "HDV, AVCHD, and DV" for simultaneous edit? What if I originate my material on Beta or DVCPro and want to import using firewire?
2.) Will my timelines be compatible to other (higher-end) Final Cut programs?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Chip

    Welcome to the forum!
1.) If the video you plan to use is not HDV, DV, or AVCHD then it will not be able to be ingested by FCE. The best way to get your media into FCE would be to capture it, but if it originates somewhere else you can still import it into FCE provided it is one of the formats cited above. If your media is not one of these three, you will have to use a convertor to make it "readable" by FCE. If you want to keep the full resolution of another format, you are better off directly going to Final Cut Pro, as it can handle these formats.
2.) Final Cut Pro will be able to open your Final Cut Express timelines, but you will not be able to go back the other way around. So only let your editors open the project in FCPro once you are done using it in FCE.
If you are planning to shoot professional videos, FCE transcodes into Apple Intermediate Codec, usually giving you lower quality then if you were to ingest the media in FCPro, which uses ProRes for higher quality yet larger file sizes. If you are not worried about the mentioned drawbacks to using FCE as a first-cut before FCP, then you should be fine.

  • Trouble importing LiveType into FCE

I am trying LiveType for the first time with my video. I have created the file in LiveType and then tried to import it into FCE. When I view the background in the viewer it looks great. When I drag it to my movie and try Insert I get an error that says "Edit Operation had no effect. Check the target tracks. You may need to open the source clip into the viewer in order to see all of the target tracks". It doesn't add it to my timeline. I can drag it to the timeline, but when I preview the video it says unrendered as it plays. It has the red line in the bar above it and everything else in my video is green. I have rendered the video in LiveType and also just tried the LiveType file...
Anyone have any advice? I am sure this is something simple...
    Thanks for your help!!

Appears to be a problem in LiveType and FCE as of Leopard.
LiveType files created BEFORE Leopard was installed import fine, but files created AFTER Leopard was installed will not import and return an error:
File Error. 1 File Recognized. 0 Access Denied. 1 file unknown.
Live Type files that are rendered as movies are importable and that is the workaround. But of course they cannot be edited again unless the Live Type file is reopened and re-rendered.
IOW, no import of a Live Type file directly into FCE.
Pro apps download doesn't appear to apply to FCE and you need a FCP serial # to access it anyway.
    All suggestions appreciated.

  • Cannot Import Graphics Into Project

I am experiencing some very odd behavior in RoboHelp 9 project. When I attempt to import/insert a graphic into a topic, I receive the message:
    Unable to rename file, "image.gif".
    The file contains illegal characters.
First of all, I am NOT trying to rename the graphic. Secondly, the file name image.gif does not contain illegal characters. This happens for any graphic I attempt to import/insert into the project. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hi there
If you click File > Rename Project (don't worry, we aren't really going to rename the project) what do you see at the bottom of the dialog where it shows the path?
Just click Cancel to dismiss the dialog.

  • Importing graphic into hybrid page

I've never used Blank Pages before, but I opened
Dreamweaver's "2 column hybrid, left sidebar, header and footer"
blank page. How do I correctly import a header graphic into the
header area so that it adjusts to different display
    settings?

This is not a resolution issue. It's a browser width issue.
    Your only way
out is to prevent the container from flexing as the browser
    width decreases.
In other words you should have chosen a fixed width page
    rather than a fluid
    one.
You can probably just change this -
    .twoColHybLtHdr #container {
width: 80%; /* this will create a container 80% of the
    browser width */
    background: #FFFFFF;
margin: 0 auto; /* the auto margins (in conjunction with a
    width) center
    the page */
    border: 1px solid #000000;
text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center
    on the body
    element. */
    to this -
    .twoColHybLtHdr #container {
    width: 830px; /* this will create a container 830px wide */
    background: #FFFFFF;
margin: 0 auto; /* the auto margins (in conjunction with a
    width) center
    the page */
    border: 1px solid #000000;
text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center
    on the body
    element. */
    And get something acceptable.

  • Import iMoive into FCE 4.0

I've imported a movie into iMoive 5.0.2 but do not see how these directions for importing the project file into FCE 4.0 are applicable:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61851
Is there a given format that the footage should first be exported as from iMoive? The instructions at the above URL do not seem to state as such.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

The way I read the instructions, you don't export from iMovie at all. In FCE, you go to File->Open and navigate to your iMovie project.
"1. Open Final Cut Express HD.
    2. From the File menu, choose Open.
    3. In the dialog that appears, select the iMovie project you want to open. The iMovie project opens in the Browser and contains the sequence and clips as they appeared in the iMovie clips shelf.
Important: Final Cut Express HD does not import iMovie sound effects, audio levels, or transitions. All other applied effects are imported.
    4. Double-click the sequence to open the iMovie project in the Timeline.
    5. Render the sequence if necessary.
Imported clips are linked to the original clips captured and/or rendered in iMovie. These original clips can be found inside the iMovie project bundle for iMovie HD or in the iMovie project's Media folder for versions 3 and 4.
    Notes:
DV Stream files do not have timecode tracks, so DV media imported from iMovie project files cannot be recaptured.
Imported iMovie DV files might not play back or print to tape in real time without being rendered first.
All imported source media must be backed up for future reediting."

  • Importing mt2s into FCE

I understand that FCE does not natively read mt2s files. My problem here is that we're working on a group project, and the other participants are bringing their files over as mt2s. So, what do I need to do to get this to a format that FCE can read?

As mentioned above, the cameras are NOT AVCHD, they are HD. The cameras themselves are compatible with iMovie, FCE and FCP. That's not the problem. The issue is with the files brought in from my associates on CD and DVD. They are mt2s files which FCE and iMovie cannot read.
This is a video project where several people have segments of their own video to edit, and we bring them all together as one complete unit on one machine. I happen to have that machine. So what I'm getting is not raw video, but an edited sequence complete with music, cuts and overdubs.
Back to the previous suggestion: I've loaded Streamclip and the Quicktime component. The good news is that I've been able to read, convert and import into FCE the m2v file. Which was the highest quality file that he brought over. So that gets the job done. Thank you guys. However, for the record, I still can't read the m2ts file. But that's OK, I'll advise the rest of the project team to give me m2v files, which I believe they can do without any issues.
    Thanks again. Much appreciated.

  • Importing iphoto into FCE

Working with FCE4.0.1/iphoto08. I thought I had successfully imported an iphoto folder into FCE. Tried several way to import. After reading other messages, I exported iphoto folder onto desktop and then imported into FCE. However, when I double-click a specific photo, it does not show up in the veiwer. I also tried to drop it into a sequence, shows the name of the photo in the time-line, but when I double-click, it only shows a black screen on viewer. Have I missed a step?

I just tried importing a single photo. Still did not work. When I drop it into a sequence and double clicked, the viewer and canvas actually shows the outline of what looks like a frame of a photo, but no photo inself. Any other thoughts?

  • Importing AVI into FCE has out of sync audio, but not in iMovie?

    Hi all,
I'ave searched around and can't seen to find this issue in other parts of the forum, so thought I would try posting up. I'm using a GoPro camera which creates AVI files at 27fps, 512 x 384, Mono Audio, 8.0KHz, 32-bit Floating Point. I'm totally new to FCE, but when I drag these files into the project space and watch them on the viewer... it seems like the audio is almost 10 seconds ahead of the video right off the bat. It was the case with all 6 videos I had.
The crazy thing is when I drag these files into iMovie... the audio and video is sync'd up fine. Is there some setting in FCE that I'm missing that's causing this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... I just went out and bought FCE because I figured if I'm going to start editing video more often... I should step up and of course I can't even get my raw clips to play correctly right off the bat
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Jack

A DV-NTSC video file of 12GB should be a video about 55 minutes in length. If that's the approximate length of your avi video file, then you're probably good to go.
Have you brought the QT file into FCE? Did it behave properly?
FCE's learning curve IS pretty steep. You'd be wise to invest in some training material. Two excellent choices:

  • Importing .mov into FCE

Hello, I just installed Final Cut Express to try and edit videos I capture through the Kodak Zi6 handheld video camera, but when I try to drag and drop into FCE I get an error message saying "Unknown file"?

    See this thread:

The Zi6 is not directly compatible with FCE, you must first convert its files to something FCE understands.

  • Importing graphics into iMHD

I've built some 'title cards' using Graphic Converter. I saved them as .tif files. I can't get them into iMHD. I tried a backdoor method, but they won't import into iPhoto, although they show up in the photo album.
    What am I doing wrong?

How can you get them into a photo album if you can't import them in iPhoto?
When saving as TIFF, did you use LZW compression? Try saving without using LZW compression. iMovie SHOULD be able to read TIFF.

  • Problem with importing graphics into InDesign

This is a fictitious example to illustrate my problem...
I have .PSD file measuring 10cm square. It's completely blank except for a layer containing a 5cm square box in the middle. When I import to InDesign it places as a 10cm square picture frame (with the 5cm image in the middle surrounded by blank space), rather than a 5cm square picture frame "snapped" to the edges of the .PSD content.
This means doing a "Fit Frame to Content" now makes the InDesign frame the same dimensions as the .PSD document (ie. 10cm square), when it used to make it 5cm square (i.e the same dimensions as the CONTENT of the .PSD document). Any ideas about changing this back? I've no idea what's changed recently...
Apologies; that's been described incredibly badly. I hope someone understands what I mean!
    Thanks in advance

Thanks guys. But in the past when this has happened it's seemed to be linked to the last image I opened in PhotoShop. Often I have to render PDFs in PhotoShop to send visuals to printers and, depending on what I pick in the "Crop to:" drop down box, in the past has altered the way my next image imports in InDesign. In the past if the next .PSD image imported into InDesign with the extra white space around it, I turned Import Options on and then got similar "crop to" options in InDesign, and (off the top of my head) chose "Bounding Box" to resolve the issue. Now I'm just getting the option to turn layers on or off.
That said, InDesign does now seem to be behaving exactly as you (Daniel) describe. This is annoying because I've been testing this now on a .PSD graphic which used to place and crop to the content, but now places at the size of the full PhotoShop document.
And Rik: I agree that I could crop the original images in PhotoShop, which would technically resolve the issue - and may end up being what I have to do in the short term. But I've got a bee in my bonnet about this now, because this isn't how InDesign has been behaving for me for the past 5 years.
I've tried deleting the preferences for both InDesign and PhotoShop in the vain hope it would be as simple as that. That didn't work.
I'll keep searching for the answer...

  • Tips for importing graphics into FCP

    Hi all,
I am very new to Final Cut Pro, as my experience is as a print designer.
I have to make a very simple slide show and luckily I am working with a friend who has experience with FCP. My job is to set up the graphics that we'll be importing into the app. This will be authored on a DVD and played on a standard television/DVD unit.
Does anybody have any tips on how I should set up the documents I'll be importing? A resolution for the "canvas" I'll be working on? Any particular file formats I should use ( PICT, JPG, etc?...)
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I suggest you work on graphics with a larger number of pixels than the "base" video frame size - so you can zoom in, rotate and pan around it (known as the "Ken Burns" effect west of the Atlantic, or "Ken Morse" if east of the Atlantic!)
I you don't do this, and you want to tweak the graphic in FCP at all in respect of size, rotation, position etc (or move it, of course) you will lose definition in a big way.
I suggest trying about 2000x1500 pixels.
