Importing H.264 movie clips

I have taken a lot of 1060p movie clips on my Canon 60D.  They imported directly into iPhoto.  I want to now make a movie.
I am not sure which is the best method of importing them into FCE4.  I can drag and drop them from iPhoto Events into the Browser, or I can export from iPhoto to MPEG Streamclip and export as a QT movie which can then be imported into the browser.  Or I wonder if I would get better quality if I used log and transfer directly from the SD card in the camera?  Can anyone advise please?  Thank you.  Keith

Thank you Al and David.  I looked at this information carefully. I have set up a new preset for loading in MPEGStreamclip using AIC, dropped in a movie clip from iPhoto, made a movie and then imported that into the browser in FCE.  I was able to place that on the timeline without the need for rendering. This seems to be the best procedure for my particluar project.  Am I correct?  Thank you for your advice.  Keith

  • Importing 16:9 .mov clips

I've searched the discussions and the apple site for an answer but no luck so far.
I've imported some .mov clips in 16:9 aspect ratio but when I share the finished project with iDVD the resulting movie is "squished", for lack of better word, and the people are elongated (pillarboxed?). So far I've tried unchecking the pillarboxing/letterboxing option in the iMovie preferenes but I think this is for importing from cameras only. Anyway, it didn't work; the resulting movie is still affected. If I drag the .mov clips directly into an iDVD project the finished DVD is in 16:9, except now I have 5 short movies rather than one feature length movie. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this a shortcoming of iMovie?
    Thanks, Dennis

    Klaus,
I'm not using QT as an intermediary but only to view the .mov files I downloaded from the internet. I compare that with the disc image I burned in iDVD. I use QT to view the original .mov files and Apple's DVD player to view the disc image.
To summarize, I downloaded 5 .mov "acts" which make up an entire movie. It was available for download this way instead of the entire movie all in one file because it was too big a file (I guess), or maybe it was made in 5 different acts available at different times. Anyway, I wanted to put them all together into a complete movie using my existing software options. I thought to import them into iMovie and then share to iDVD and burn a DVD. I can do all that but in the final product the actors are elongated, so I figured the original was in 16:9 format. The problem seems to originate when I import the files into iMovie. So, I viewed the original .mov files with QT to see if they looked elongated and they did not. I even put the origiall .mov files directly into a iDVD, not "stitching" them together with iMovie, burned a disc image, and they look fine. I assume importing the .mov files into iMovie "squishes" them together and they come out elongated. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I thought maybe your suggestions would solve this probem but it didn't. Should I convert the .mov to some other file first, such as .avi or .mpg4?
I really appreciate you trying to help me.

  • Imovie 09 fails to import h.264 .mov file 1280x528

    Hi,
When I import a .mov file it seems to process but doesn't actually bring the video into imovie.
    Here's the file specs:
    .mov
    h.264, 1280x528 millions
    AAC, 2 channels 44100 Hz
I've also tried with an mp4 (mpeg4 codec) and am mp4 (h.264 codec) of the same clip and none of them import successfully.
They were all converted from a .mkv file using iFunia MKV converter.
    Thanks,

Can You get one movie file onto DeskTop
    • select it - and press cmd+I [apple-key and I-key]
    or - better
    • open it with QuickTime-player
(YES it can open many many more Video-Codecs than iMovie can use)
    - open Inspector - o press cmd+I [apple-key and I-key]
    Now read
    • Formatted as (Video-Codec) :
    • No. of Frames per second :
could look like this (or about) :
and my QuickTime-player (pro) can convert this to AIC if needed - or at least as StreamingDV as this is the best choice for me and my projects.

  • Importing and joining movie clips

hello ! here's my question to you. I'm working on a video project  (home movies) and I have 12 video clips from various tapes saved to my hard drive. I've managed to import them one by one  into the latest version of iMovie (10.0.6 I believe) and they import correctly. However, I cannot seem to, for the life of me, join all of these video clips together to create a full movie. I've tried selecting all of the clips, then share, then file. I click on it, then nothing.  I can export clip 1,2, etc, but that's not what I want. I want the whole thing all together
    thanks for any help

thanks, GeeD. It's been a while since I used iMovie and the last version I used was 8 or 9 (back when I had my single quad core Mac Pro). Things sure have changed. Frankly, I like some of the older controls better, but what can you do? it is what it is---and it works

  • Problems to import Samsung NV24HD movie clips into iMovie08

    I have a Samsung NV24HD Camera:
    - iMovie recognizes the camera
    - iMovie shows that there are film clips, but without thumbnail content
    - iMovie creates an error message after clicking on the import button -> iMovie can't import the video files, I should check them!
    What can I do ?
    thx in advance.

im not an expert but you might need to search for a converter. or buy Final Cut Express which recognizes lots more formats but is a bit more complicated to use.
    Hope it helps

  • Is it normal for Compressor and FCP to analyse an imported progressive H.264 movie as interlaced?file

I am worried my programs are corrupt, because FCP tells me my progressive H.264 file is interlaced (upper first) and Compressor analyses the same movie as bottom first. It should be progressive! Why are they not telling me it's progressive, and why both different to each other? Is it because theyn can't analyse a H.264 file correctly?! Please someone tell me what's going on!
    Thanks, Syd

    Hi Shane, thanks for replying.
The reason I imported the H.264 movie into FCP was to add a short logo clip to the end of it, which was requested after I had exported a self-contained movie from my timeline and already started converting in Compressor... it took 60 hours to deinterlace (set to Best) and convert to H.264 all in one Batch (using only a single target...I did everything in one target, rather than chaining). I know you can't edit in H.264, but I thought adding something to the end and then re-exporting to H.264 might work...
anyway, that's why I imported it, and then noticed that FCP analysed it as being still interlaced... So it occurred to me to check the movie Compressor had exported by importing it back into Compressor to look at what the A/V attributes tab of the inspector said... and it said there it was progressive. So now I was worried my programs were disagreeing, so I went back to square one, converted my original footage to Pro Res in Compressor, then ran that Pro Res footage through Compressor to de-interlace, then reconnected media in my FCP timeline, so that all the clips in the timeline were now progressive. Then I exported that as a self-contained movie and imported into Compressor to convert to H.264. Finally, knowing no other way to analyse the footage, and also wanting to see what FCP would make of it, I imported the movie into FCP, and found the result I put in the first post of this thread... so tried analysing in Compressor again, and found that Compressor thinks it is as I wrote in the first post above.
So now Compressor tells me the file it previously converted to progressive isn't progressive, and thinks it has a different dominant field to the one FCP thinks it has, even though the first time I ran this movie through Compressor it analysed its own result as progressive... so I feel these incompatible analyses are possibly a symptom of something wrong?
How can I analyse a H.264 file if neither FCP or Compressor can do it?

  • Importing MOV clips into Premier Elements 10

I'm trying to import Qucktime MOV clips into Adobe Premier Elements 10 but they install as audio files only. How can I get them to load as video clips so I can construct a movie from them?

    Hi
I'm using a Mobius 1080p HD camera shooting in HD producing MOV files.
I've inspected one of the files using Quicktime/Windows and the information is
    Format - H.264. 1920 x 1080. Millions 16 bit Integer (Little Endian). Mono. 32.000 Htz
    Movie FPS = 30.00
    Playing FPS = 30.00
    Data Size 401.47 MB
    Data Rate 18.19 mbits/sec
    Duration 00.03.05.00
    Normal Size 1920 x 1080 pixels
    Current Size 1920 x 1080 pixels
The clips play in excellent quality HD and without a problem in Windows Media Player
I have reformated some in MP4 format and they will play back in Premier Elements after a fashion.. but very slow and jerky making editing just about impossible. I have reloaded Adobe Premier Elements on another computer but get the same results.
It appears Adobe Premier Elements is not up to dealing with these files.

  • Import 1080p h.264 mov to editi with premiere pro?

i am a nikon d800 user , and i like to use adobe premiere pro to edit the 1080p video clips for sharing with my friends, but the compressed H.264 MOV videos from D800 can not be playbacked or edited smoothly on many editing softwares such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas , Windows Moive Maker and so on.
With the help of my friend Tim, i got a top video converter, it works very well .
if you wanna to got the more detailed information , you can refer here:
Nikon 1080P H.264 MOV imported to edit with Adobe Premiere Pro

What version of Premiere Pro are you using? I had no trouble whatsoever importing or editing a video off of my D800 in Premiere Pro CS6. No type of conversion was necessary.
As far as the playback, without NVidia's CUDA hardware acceleration for Adobe's Mercury Playback Engine, software acceleration is not going to keep up at 30 fps. Change the playback resolution to 1/2 (every other frame) for smooth video playback. This is for display purposes only. The video itself will still be fully processed.

  • I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine.  Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

  • IMovie HD refuses to import .MOV clips that it used to import.

I've got an odd problem. Doing a search didn't turn up anything relevant to my situation so I'm gonna try to pick some brains on here.
My Problem: My version of iMovie(5.0.2) no longer recognizes .mov clips that it used to. Meaning that when I try to import clips using settings that worked previously, I am now confronted with an Error during import message that reads "The file could not be imported: Unknown Error". Two things have changed since I last made a project.
1.) I have added a microphone that now allows me to record stereo audio. I don't think this is the culprit.
2.) I updated to 10.6.6 Recently. I think this may be what messed things up.
After trying to Drag and also import clips through the menu with no success, I tried to import clips that I have used before under the exact same conditions and was greeted with the same error. This is importing using the HDV 720p setting. If I try to import new or old clips using the standard DV (16:9) setting then everything works.
These same clips are able to be imported into iMovie '09 with no trouble but I am uncomfortable with that interface. Is there anything I can do to continue to work in iMovie HD or would I just be better off with getting used to iMovie 09?
    Thank you for any replies.

I have Mac 10.6.6 and use iMovie 05 transferring it to iDVD 08. It is getting less easy to do, but usually i make the movie in 05, complete with chapter marking and press the export to DVD.
The file for the Movie I have made is saved automatically in the Movie folder on my owner/home page. To get it out to iDVD 08 open 08 and select create new project and click save This puts a small file into Documents, However to get your work into the new DVD select import>video and when the screen opens for you to find it go to your movie folder in your owners area and click to open the file. It works, but there is usually a problem somewhere along the line. Usually a different one each time, occasionally it goes like clockwork. It won't work if you try the drop down 'open' option.
This last time I got so irritated that I've downloaded the last set of film clips to 05 and then transferred them to 08 to compare the results. I still feel that the later versions are less good (?dumbed down) and await to be converted.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

  • Movie clips have wrong time when importing

I use to rename my images before importing to iPhoto. I copy them from my camera to a folder in the desktop, rename everything to my like using Adobe Bridge, and then I import them to iPhoto. That way the name of a file usually corresponds to the one in the internal Library (control-freak as I am). That said, I never mess with the Library.
But I'm having this problem all the time: After importing, all the image pictures are listed on the event accordingly to their correct date/time, but the movie clips are not. They always have an irregular variation in time, sometimes with a difference of several hours, that I have to change manually using iPhoto "adjust date/time" to have them sorted ok chronologically. The strange thing is: that EXIF data is correct in Bridge! I even use this to view/reference the correct time in Bridge, and change it on the movie file already imported in iPhoto.
Could this be a bug in iPhoto, or is there something wrong with my way of importing? Again, it happens only to the movie files, not the images.
    Thanks.

Thank you. I didn't know that.
But still, for me it's a common issue to have iPhoto reading a wrong "File Created" data on my imported movies, even though it seems to be OK on the original file. Does it ever happen to you, know about that issue? Sometimes I have ten or more movie clips in an event and it's a bit of a hassle to restore manually the correct time for each one.
Maybe it's Bridge fault, maybe it's iPhoto, maybe my workaround is the only answer to this "bug"?
    Thanks again.

  • Can't drag and drop or import movie clips or ver. 8 projects into iMovie 9

    Hello:
I just installed Leopard (OS X) with iLife and iWork (although I didn't actually install iWork). I can't drag and drop .mov or .dv files into a project. If I "File-->Import-->Movies", all the types I want to import (.mov & .dv) are grayed-out. I created and saved a project with the older version of iMovie (8) and then tried to import it into iMovie 9. The result is a message in the clips panel that says "No matching video. Choose a different options from the Show pop-up menu at the lower left corner." So far, everything I wanted to do is bust. Can somebody help?
    Thanks.

  • I figured out how to snap a still photo of a movie clip, but where then does it go, and how can I import it into my iPhoto library?

I was working in iMovie and discovered how to take a still photo of a movie clip.  Now I can't find that still photo!  Where did it go, and how can I import it to my iPhoto library?

Just found out and it is simple.  When you find a frame in your video/movie of which you want a still photo or screen shot, just go to the frame and click on command, shift and the #3 in quick succession.  You will hear a "click" like a camera taking a photo.  The screen shot will then go to your desktop where you can drag it to iPhoto or an e-mail, or anywhere you like.  Also you can rename the screen shot by double clicking on the wording under the screen shot on your desk top. Whew!
