Importing HDV 720p30

Hi I just started capturing footage on my JVC JY-HD10u, shooting in 720p30, and final cut only seems to recognize the camera and capture the footage when I'm using the intermediate codec for HDV 720p30, but there's also an option for HDV 720p30, but for some reason it doesnt seem to work. why is Final cut making me use the intermediate codec when the regular one exists? also I have a setting on my camera that lets me choose between iLink out: "DV" or "MPEG2". the camera will only work when it is set to MPEG2, I dont know what the difference is but I was curious as to why the DV didnt work.
Finally I have an SD setting capability shooting in 420p60 which i was very excited about but have absolutely no idea how that will work either... any help would be much appreciated, thanks a bunch,
John

Hi(Bonjour)!
It's a matter of choice and workflow.
See this link for documentation about FCP and High Definition formats:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/FCP6HD_and_BroadcastFormats.pdf
Apple intermediate codec "write" all images on a 29.97 frame rate basic as HDV is a MPEG2 format based on a long GOP (group of picture) of 0.5 second.
For this reason, AIC tends to take 5 to 6 time the space of native HDV.
But you works with all images needed to editing.
HDV native push on computer processors as all intermediate frames must be calculated to a complete one on viewing.
The conversion from HDV to DV occurs directly on your camcorder, and so, you have to choose DV-NTSC if you want a SD material.

  • Importing HDV 1080i60 as HDV 720p30

I have a sony HDR FX1 and I want to import the HDV 1080i60 footage I took into FCP as HDV 720p30. What is the easiest way to do this?

You can't do this without a capture card. But, if you had a card, then it would be best to capture as DVCPRO HD 720p.
You cannot cross convert via firewire.

  • Importing AVCHD 720p30 makes 60fps

I'm using a Panasonic HMC40 to shoot 720p30 video clips. When I log and transfer, the clips import fine but they play at twice the speed. When I right-click on a clip in the browser and select item properties it states the video is 60fps. I have Easy Setup set at HDV 720P30. There is no AVCHD 720p option. Anyone know where I'm going wrong? FCE V 4.01

The Specifications/Technical Info page of your camera manual will probably mention it in one sentence.
Most consumer camcorders shot interlaced until recently. Now some of them give the choice of interlaced or progressive.
However, it would be quite complicated to change to true progressive so when put in progressive mode, they simply shoot 2 identical fields per frame which is pretty much the same as 1 field per frame.
The correct name for this system is Progressive Segmented Frames (PSF).

  • Importing HDV 720p footage with HDR-HC1 - no video, but timecode!

    Thanks for reading...
I'm trying to import my HDV 720p footage from the HDR-HC1.
I get timecode but no video. I can control the deck but still no video.
I used the easy set up of HDV- 720p30.
I'm even trying to use HDVxDV and I can control the deck but no video.
    On the camera:
My iLINK is off. Settings set to HDV. Firewire is plugged in to HDV port.
    I tried:
    Different computers.
    Different versions of FCP.
    Different firewire ports.
    Restarting.
Anyone have this camera? I've been working on this for 5 hours now...

You really need to let us know what the original camera and HDV format was so that others here looking for answers can benefit from your issue. It was not known that you even had a tape recorded from another source in your original post and that would have made a big difference to the answers you where looking for. *There are many different flavors of HDV and not all work together with the various manufactures hardware.* It is clear to me that you found this out the hard way, and if you didn't post your last thank you post we wouldn't have known either.
There are many setting within FC that can be confusing and this is the place to come and ask for help. It is also the place you will get real answers to solve your issues. Jerry and I gave you solid answers to your original post and as always it is nice to see the Green or Gold Stars of reward for helping. But what is troubling to see is the other poster (who you mark as Solved) didn't understand your issue (due to the lack of original details) and thinks you have the same problem he does, *and he didn't even offer up any answers.* Know the next guy searching for answers will see the Green Star and look there first for his answers and there won't be one.
There are so many variables to factor when giving advice and many times we ask for more details first. I wish I had asked.

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • Importing HDV files (.m2t) no audio in timeline (or sound gaps in audio file) ONLY IN CS6 !

After importing HDV files, wait for conforming, and drop the files to sequence, on some files there is no audio at all or partial audio.
All files played OK in any mediaplayer.
I have no such problems in CS5 or 5.5 using the same files in the same project and sequence type. HDV 1080i/25
I reinstall PR CS6 and I delete all ".cfa" and ".pek" files, but no success.

All right so what I just discover so far in order to resolve this non sense bug thing, I've exported the faulted sequence in EDL, track by track.
On the original sequence, I had a Prores 422 video clip name "Clip 497" that was manually sync with an audio file call "Audio 10".
At another timecode in the original timeline, I had a h264 clip name "MVI_0050" that was synced with an audio file call "Tascam_0455".
I said that when I select only an audio file in the timeline and I make reveal in the project, it links me to the correct audio file in the bin but when I make match frame or reveal in the finder, it links the audio to a video file. The
Well the EDL just confirmed that, in the timeline created by the EDL, I have to relink manually all the files (wich is a pain in...) and my mysterious audio file "Audio 10" appears with the name "MVI_0050", I can still link it to the original "Audio 10" but I don't understand HOW an audio get to be linked to a video file......
The audio file coming from the Tascam still have their original names in the timeline.
Very weird and not very cool.
Oh  and guess what, after closing Premiere and re open it, my sequence coming from the EDL where I spent 1 hours to manually relink the media....does not have sound anymore.......................

  • How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card to Final cut Pro 5.1.4

How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card (recorded with the Sony HVR Z 7E) to Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 – is this possible at all?
I managed to import the files to Premiere, but it was just a test. I am working at a very huge documentary project with Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 thats why I would prefere not to change the program or the version.
Simply exporting from Premiere back to final cut is also very complicated.
    Thanks for any ideas.

First, copy the card to a hard drive connected to your fcp workstation.  I always back up all card based media at least 2 or three times.  All hard drive will eventually fail.  It's a question of when, not if.
I'm not familiar with this particular camera, but examine the contents of the copied files and see if you can find any .mov files.  You can try importing these directly into fcp.
If you don't, you can try something like clipwrap
    http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
    or
    Magic Bullet Grinder
    http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/
But, I'd really advise upgrading to at least fcp6 or ideally fcp7 if you can find a copy.  HDV is a problematic format.  Although you can certainly work with it and it's a fcp approved format, converting your media to prores would make your life much easier.

  • I can only import HDV with Apple Intermediate Codec!!!!

    Hello,
I want to get to the bottom of this. I have HDV film shot on a DV tape. I cannot import this HDV footage, it appears to be importing, but the moment I hit "escape" to stop capture, I realize nothing was actually importing. I usually end up with a second of captured footage, ironically, it's of the second that I stopped capture on. So I capture my last second.
Of course, if I change my setting to Apple Intermediate Codec, it works fine.
I'm using Final Cut Pro 5 on a G5 that hasn't been online in a while. Maybe I just need some 'updates?"
Or is this a Final Cut Pro 5 issue since it came out when HDV was relatively new on the scene?
Should I upgrade to Final Cut Pro 6, cut that make importing HDV easier for me?
This footage I don't mind converting to Intermediate Codec, but in the future I'd like to not have to do this.
    Anyone know what causes this?
    Thanks!

You should be able to do it fine in 5.0 as well as 5.1.
I have been capturing HDV since August of 2006, long before FCP 6. Make sure you use a camera that is supported, for HDV is not a standard the way DV is. It is MPEG 2 out of the box. So when you capture you are in for a bit of a ride editing HDV on FCP 5. It can be done, but you are better to take a page from Shane's book and capture to DVCPro HD instead. It takes up much more space, but you will have no headache editing and outputting later.
    Hope this helps.

  • HDV 720p60 VS HDV 720p30??

This one should be easy but I have forgotten what all of those numbers mean. I noticed that when I try to use media manager to recompress a project using HDV 720p60 the project size ends up being half the size of the project if I were to use HDV 720p30. I always thought that these two aren't that different from each other after all. Can someone please explain why such difference between the two file sizes?
I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I can setup for 720p30, Are you sure this isn't right for you. Are you sure you shoot 60 frames of HDV. Please give more details including versions of OS,FC, QT and computer, and camera/decks involved.

  • Importing HDV Material in Final Cut Pro 4.5

I'm using Final Cut Pro HD (4.5), quite an old version,
and I want to import HDV footage, shot with a "SONY HDR-HC7E" camera.
    Is it possible?
Are there any settings to use?
In the "easy settings" section, I see there is DVCPRO HD, but I guess it's not the same thing.... or is it?
    I'm not an expert.
    Thank you for your attention

FCP 4.5 does NOT support HDV as HDV was released quite a while after 4.5. You'll need FCP 5.0 or higher to work with HDV. DVCPro HD is not the same as HDV at all.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 crashing when importing HDV Video

For some reason I keep getting crashes when importing HDV (720p60) video into the timeline of Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.  This has happened on two different machines, with similar specs.
Per the suggested guidelines, here are the specifics:
    Version of Premiere Pro: CS6, Version 6.0.5 (001 (MC:264587))
    All updates have been installed.
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.8.5.
Source footage: HDV 720p60 video in .MOV container.
Full text of error message: "Sorry, a serious error has occured that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down.  We will attempt to save your current project."
Link to full crash report: http://goo.gl/Gn8Bzn
Crash occurs when trying to import HDV .MOV file.
This is a consistent problem when importing .MOV files of this type.
Complete Adobe Creative Suite is installed.  Also using Episode Pro encoding software from Telestream to prepare HDV video.  No other external video hardware or codecs installed.
Yes, I am using the Mecury Playback Engine GPU acceleration.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me figure this one out.

  • CS5: Export HDV 720p30 Timeline to HDV MPG File

    Hi-
Hopefully a simple question. I want to export my HDV 720p30 timeline to a file without introducing any additional compression (or very minimal). In searching for a solution, I read that you can connect an HDV deck, select output to tape, let the sequence render, and then search for a MPG file in the cache that's essentially the rendered sequence's HDV MPG file. Since I don't have an HDV deck anymore, is there an easier way? Should I just export MPG with the highest quality settings? What specifically should I choose? Ideally, I'd like to be able to just drag this 'edited master sequence'' back into the timeline as a 'raw' HDV 720p30 source file down the road. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Colin-
Thanks. I do understand the additional level of compression. Even though the sequences are only a few minutes each, I don't think it's worth dealing with the huge file sizes, etc. I was just looking for the 'ideal' way to backup the master sequence - something the most equivalent to providing 'an edited master' via HDV tape.
I suppose I could have used an intermediary codec like Cineform, but it's really not worth it. What would be a good alternate (or less compressed) alternative?

  • Debug Event when importing HDV footage

    In short:
When I try to import HDV footage into a project (.mpeg format),
    I receive the following message:
    Premiere Pro Debug Event
premiere pro has encountered an error.
    [..\..\src\time.cpp-105]
Subsequently premiere fails to import the files...
I first noticed this problem last week, so I thought it might
be related to a product update. But even when uninstalling Premiere
Pro and re-installing it (thus being version 3.0) the problem
still exists. Updating to 3.2 doesn't solve the issue either.
    Does anyone recognize this issue?
    regards,

    Perhaps
    this?

  • Can an old PowerBook G4 import HDV Footage?

    I have a PowerBook G4 1.5 Ghz, running Leopard.
I want to install Final Cut Express 4, in order to import HDV video.
Do you think I can do this with my old computer, or do I need a new and faster one?
I looked at the "system requirements", they say the software needs at least a G4 processor running at 1.25 Ghz, then it should be all right. But they don't say anything about HDV and G4 processors.
I'm asking because I want to be sure, don't want to buy the program and then find out I can't use it...
    Thank you

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I do HDV on an iMac G4 1 gig of RAM, but the capturing process is longer than with my G5. The rendering time for HDV is longer than regular DV and on a G4 is very long, but can be completed. 1 gig of RAM is short for HDV as 2 gig is recommended.
A dedicated, 7200 rpm, hard drive is recommended to do HDV and maintain a high rate transfert speed. I suspect that the internal one in your book cannot keep the pace. Think about an external.

  • Importing HDV-recapturing media imported as DV to HDV

Had problems importing HDV shot on a Canon HDV camera using a Sony HD700 deck so imported as DV due to time constraints (family video). Project is finished but read a recent post by redtruck changed my settings and can now import as HDV. Question I have is with the new DVC Pro HD settings, can I go back to the original project and just recapture all the clips in the new format? Or are there other considerations. Using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks

A quick update. I tried to re-capture a single clip. Set deck to HDV instead of Auto as suggested in other posts. When I go to re-capture, it recognizes the start point, clip show up in capture window but doesn't recognize end point of clip and just keeps trying to capture past the out point. Have all AV settings at DVD Pro HD and device control preset at DVC Pro HD firewire. Set AV device playback output at Firewire DVC Pro NTSC (720x480) and audio at Firewire DV.
    Any suggestions?
