Importing Hi 8 video through Panasonic DVX 100

Here's my dilemma... I want to capture Hi 8 video. I have hooked up my original Sony Handycam camera as the player - feeding video into my Panasonic DVX 100 through the old school red-yellow-white cables. My Panasonic DVX 100 video out is a Mac Firewire that connects into a firewire 6 port hub which connects into the Mac.
Going through "Capture" on FCE, I can see the Hi 8 video. So I hit play on the Handycam player, then click "Capture Now."
But then I get the following error message "Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled."
I have the Panasonic in VCR mode (DV output set to "on") and the Handycam in "player" mode.
What am I missing? Thanks for helping out!

The solution poses a new problem, one that other people are having as well.. After I capture a clip, I get a warning regarding sample audio rate. According to my easy setup, the DV - NTSC - DV Converter audio rate is 48 kHz for both the sequence and capture.
I can't find an audio rate setting on the Sony Handicam Hi 8 camera, which is the camera that originally recorded the tape.
How can I resolve the error warning?

  • Capturing 24p Video from Panasonic DVX-100

I shot some material on the 24p mode of the Panasonic DVX-100a. I want to capture it as progressive Video because it's for The web. In The Final Cut capture settings, there is a setting for advanced pulldown removal. But not for The regular 24p mode. I dont even care about The frame rate, but i need This footage to be proggressive so I won't get the interlaced defect!

In the USE area of the Easy Setup, choose Cinema Tools 23.98 from DV-NTSC. That will remove standard 3:2 pulldown (which is 24p). You would only use the Advanced Pulldown removal if you had shot 24pA (the A standing for Advanced). Be aware that you will still have 6 interlaced frames in your video.
You no longer have to actually launch Cinema Tools to do this. You can do it from within FCP for about 2 or 3 versions now.

  • Matching video sources: Panasonic DVX 100 and Canon G10

I am trying to match digital video captured on mini-DV from a Panasonic DVX100 with video captured on a Canon G10 digital camera. The G10 footage is a good quality, but looks noticably different, the clips do not blend well. Has anyone tried something like this before, or have any suggestions?

A lot can be accomplished in the 3Way to get what you want, in fact, I would advise you against using Color for this, unless you know it and unless you're looking to establish an image baseline and have Color render new media. Time should have been taken to match the DVX100 to the G10 beforehand on chart like a DSCLabs Chrome du Monde or at least with a Macbeth Color checker.
Find similar shots from each camera, place a marker at each spot. Toggle back and forth between the markers, observe your scopes (the vectorscope, waveform and RGB Parade - ignore the histogram as it's fairly worthless) as they will tell you what to do.
    Manipulate away.
Don't know how to read your scopes? There's a section in the manual that quickly gives the highlights of this great skill to know.
If you get in a bind, send me a couple of .tiffs from similar shots of each camera and I'll get you started.

  • Editing progressive stuff shot on panasonic dvx-100

    hi
i have been shooting my video piece on the above camcorder. i shot it as progressive 25 fpc (its a pal camera).
i want to edit it but still keep it progressive.
do i log and capture it as with regular interlace stuff or do i need to change the settings of the sequence or project ?
since the frame rate is the same (25fps) and i dont need to print it to film, i can stay with 25.
i just dont want to go interlace.
also, how do i export it (it will be delivered as DVD and also as DV for backup) keeping it progressive ?
do i need to do the log and capture and print to tape with the dvx-100 to do it progressivly or can i use the sony dsr-11 ?
    i appriciate your comments.
    thanx
    nir evorn

Nothing special to do here, just use the stock preset for DV PAL sequences and capture presets... the progressive scan is maintained thoughout. The "progressive" part of the equation was done when you shot it. It will be progressive all the way through the DVD burn. Just treat it as if it was DV, cause that's what it is...
DSR or camera... won't matter, both will do the job of playing back the progressive video, again nothing special to do it's just DV...

  • Video through Panasonic HT?

    Hello,
After doing some research, I have found that the Touch requires either the Apple-branded component / composite cables or an approved system (presumably the system performs the authentication). Does anyone know of a list of these systems?
I am trying to troubleshoot the lack of video through a new Panasonic HT. Audio works great, but for video, the system tells me to connect via component. I currently have the HT connected to TV via HDMI.
Panasonic website and manual both say the same thing, but do not specify Apple cables only.
    Thanks!

You need the Apple cable either composite or component, others wont work since the 3rd Gen Nano came out. The link for the composite is below.

I have this cable and it works with the Touch.

  • Panasonic DVX-100 audio sync tool not showing up in the tools menu

Using FCP 7 in new Mac Pro with a clean install. I following the directions for copying the DVX-100 audio sync file into the proper folder /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins/
The directions say the Offset Audio Sync command should now appear in the Tools menu. It does not.
I have tried trashing preferences - reinstall the Audio Sync Tool - but it still does not show up.
I use the Panasonic Camera and with my earlier editions of FCP I had no problem installing and using
    the Audio Sync file.
Anyone have the same problem or know a solution?
    Thanks

I am not sure what's happening with IE9 (no live site) but I had real problems viewing your code in Live View - until I removed the HTML comment marked below. Basically your site was viewable in Design View but as soon a I hit Live view, it disappeared - much like IE9. See if removing the comment solves your issue.

  • Importing high quality video through a lower-quality camera

    (Final Cut 5 in a G5, 10.5.8)
The camcorder I'm using to shoot video for my Final Cut projects is a Panasonic PV-GS400, a good 3-chip mini-DV camcorder that shoots high-quality DV (original price $1500).
I would prefer not to use this camera to play the video into Final Cut, to save wear and tear on its tape drive (with tape, of course, one hour of recorded video takes one hour to play into Final Cut).
I have an inexpensive little Canon Elura 100 Mini-DV camcorder (original price $400) that could be used to play the tapes from the Panasonic into Final Cut, but if I did that, would the higher quality of the Panasonic's video be degraded to the lower level of the Canon's video when passing through?
To put it another way, can a Mini-DV tape with high quality video on it be imported through a relatively low-quality camera into Final Cut and still retain its high quality?
    Thanks for any help.
    Tom

Thanks much, guys. Yes, I'm using firewire. Glad to hear there's no loss of quality when the video is strained through a lesser camcorder on its way into Final Cut.
So now I'll go ahead and use the little Canon Elura as my playback/ingest camera with no worries.
    I appreciate the help!

  • Still Need Help: printing audio BUT not video to panasonic DVX 100A

i've never had this problem before, never.
i haven't printed to video that many times on this
camera, but i have done it a few times, with the same
    computer set up.
    i've re-booted, un-attatched cables, re-attatched them,
but still not showing video on the monitor window on the DVX.
    can some one help??
and besides the audio getting to the camcorder,
the screen does go black (instead of blue), just
    no video image.
i've followed the same procedure for the last 5 years using Final Cut Pro:
    - selecting the sequence on the Browser
    - selecting mini dvd firewire (instead of 'none')
on the drop down for Audio/Video quick setup.
    - and i've selected using same destination for 'print to video' as the source of video
    - under View, external video shows 'all frames'selected.
    - the pref's shows i'm using the DVX instead of another camera.
    thanks,
    kyle

I'll back up Studio with my usual list:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Importing music and video through command line

I can't seem to get the following to work at the DOS prompt (W2000)-
    C:\"Program Files"\iTunes\iTunes.exe "C:\TEMP_MEDIA"
I am running iTunes 7.0.2.16. iTunes launches with the above, but the files are not imported into iTunes from the directory. There is no error message of any sort. The file just doesn't get transfered. (I have no problem when I use the Import menu option in the iTunes gui.) Is there some setting that is disabling this? I tried it both with and without setting the "Play on import" option-- same result, nada.
If there is some other way to automate importing the contents of a folder or even specific files explicitly named I would be grateful to hear about it. Here is the context of mny question. I want to distribute files using an Installer that copies them to a specific folder and then uses an "EXEC" command to invoke iTunes to do an import. I cannot assume anything about the end user's environment other than it's Windows 2000 or later, with iTunes 7 or later. The end user cannot be asked to enable ActiveX controls of any sort, install special plugins, or the like. That's why this option I am trying seems like what I need... but it just doesn't want to work for some reason!
    All help most appreciated!

This was solved. I had forgotten to put the file in the ip/install folder.

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

  • Importing Sony PC-10 Video Through FW - Not Recognized

Has anyone been able to import Sony PC-10 to FCP 6 (Studio)? Or is there a work-around? I was not able to get all my footage onto drives before - and now it seems to be a problem.
    Thank for the help.

    HI,
did get FCP 6 to recognize the video on one of my computers in Log and Transfer
I think you mean log and capture.
If you have your camera connected and working, go to easy set up and select Format/NTSC and use DVNTSC (anamorphic if required) and you should be good to go.
best audio connections (out of the camera is a mini-plug).
The audio will be captured with the video through firewire.
    Good Luck,
    DM

  • Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Why?

Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Any way to solve this problem?

I don't have your model but here are some things to try.
    1) Make sure you are powering the camcorder with AC power not batteries.
    2) Open iMovie before connecting the Camcorder
    3) Connect the USB Cable and turn on the camcorder
    4) Open the LCD screen of the camcorder. Does it give you a choice of Pictbridge vs. PC Mode. If so, choose PC Mode.
    5) iMovie import screen should come up.
Also, make sure you have installed all software updates. (/Software Update). If the software update requires you to restart your Mac, then restart your Mac before proceeding. Install iMovie, iLife, Quicktime, and Leopard updates.
If that still does not work, try taking out your SD card and putting in a USB card reader.
If that still does not work, put the card back in the camcorder and make a disk image of the card using disk utility. After making the disk image, try formatting the card using your camcorder menu. Then retry shooting some footage and importing.
By the way, using MPEG streamclip should not create files any larger than iMovie will create using an import function.

  • Importing video through toast/ is quality same as importing FC

importing a mini dv cam with toast makes a .dv
importing a mini dv cam with FC makes a .mov
are there any differences in the files?
    what are the differences ?
    is one better quality?
    thank you...

importing dv tape with time code breaks.
i was told that by setting "non-controllable device" that fc would ignore time code and import without sync problems. that didn't happen for me
all my tapes have timecode breaks. so when importing, audio and video lose sync after first tc break. and non contr device didn't help.
in toast, i start tape and it doesn't care about tc breaks...
is this possible in FC (without stopping and starting) im using a sony mini dv cam
    thanks

  • Can't Play Video Through To Camera iMovie Crashes

I was working with iMovie 3 the other day and viewing the project on my TV using my trusty old Canopus ADVC 100 with the "Play Video Through To Camera" option checked in Preferences. Today I went to preview a new project and iMovie crashes everytime it finishes loading all of the clips with the play through option checked. The only way to open the project is to turn off the ADVC and uncheck the play-though option and re-save. It will load whether the ADVC is on or off as long as the play through option is not checked.
    What could have changed?

    Hi David
This is a guessing question - so many ways things can go wrong.
May be You find some help in my list:
    Mac:
    - hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture. 10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
    13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
    ◊ Reset PRAM
    ◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
    - software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
    iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    ◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
    ◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
    Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
    Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.
    More:
    ◊ follow advises here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000
◊ follow Grandmaster Dan's advice for Sony cameras here: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/usage/5020.shtml
    NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.
