Importing Hi 8 video to iMove 09

I have recorded some old Hi 8 video direct onto a DVD via a DVD recorder. I can view the DVD on my Mac but cannot import it into iMovie 09. The file on disc appears to be a Video_TS type file. Is there a way to import the video to iMove for editing or convert file so that I can import to iMove?

Hi
Just another twist to this.
I would go from Hi8 Camera to an A/D-box and directly ito Mac
(and to iMovie HD 6 or FinalCut Express - Not iMovie 08 or 09 to preserv what
quality possibly
more even so if I'm aiming to re-edit and as a DVD disk as end result)
(I use a Canopus ADVC-300 but there are cheaper ones as -55 and -110, and
other brands totally.)

When I imported an mp4 video to imovies, it only imported the 1st frame of the video - all thumbnails only showed the 1st frame.

It sounds like you have hidden the menu bar, for details of how to restore it see the [[menu bar is missing]] article. This article may also help - [[Back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]]

  • DI imported an mpeg4 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and the Precision Editor is grayed out and I can't edit.  Why??

I imported an mpeg34 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and I am unable to edit it.  Precision Editor and Clip Trimmer are grayed out.  Any idea why this is happening?

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

  • How do I import my (many) videos so iMovie separates them by the date they orig. were made?

How do I import my (many) videos so iMovie separates them by the date they orig. were made?
(Like iPhoto does with photos) But not one at a time! If that is not possible with IMovie, can iTunes do that?
I want to import my videos from an external drive to my Mac Book Pro 10.8.3. Thank you so much for your time and patience.

    Hi Walter,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below will give you some insight as to how iMovie organizes video:
    iMovie '11: Organize your video
    Organize the Event Library
When you import video from your camera into iMovie, you name the video (called an Event), and then by default iMovie lists it in the Event Library by the date it was recorded.
To separate clips in the Event browser by the days they were recorded, choose View > “Show Separate Days in Events.”
You might want to do this if you have any Events that contain video that was recorded on more than one day. For example, an Event could have video recorded on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day. To find specific clips more easily, you could separate the footage by date.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Can't import mts/HD video to imovie 09

    Hi,
I have the Sony HDR-TG5V & have successfully imported mpg/SD videos to imovie but haven't been able to import mts/HD videos. I've tried deleting the SD from my video camera but it still doesn't recognize the mts/HD videos. For some reason the SD videos keep popping up even though I've deleted them from the camera. Please help!

Yes the ffmpeg solutions seems to work and I was very happy with this at first beceause this also eliminates re-encoding whole video clips again.
BUT! I do have serious performance issues inside iMovie '09 with these newly created M4V files. Once imported skimming through them goes extremely slow. An I mean extreeemely slowww... So I'm unable to use them. When I choose the optimize setting and let iMovie convert the file to Quicktime after all, optimizing also takes a very large amount of time. A 30 seconds clip took me about an hour to import/optimize and I don't have this issue when importing from camera. Once imported and optimized in Quicktime the clip works perfect just like any other clip but it's gonna tame me a tremendous amount of time to do this with the large amount of MTS files I have (incorrectly) saved on an external hard drive.
There must be some sort of solution to wrap up the MTS files in a native AVCHD folder structure so that iMovie will import them? And I mean a solution without re-encoding them to MPEG4 or whatsoever beceause that would be costing me too much time as well.
Any other tips? Maybe writing the files back to the camcorder but unfortunately Canon only supplies Windows software for doing that. Anyone had experience with that?

  • I'd like to import my camera video using iMovie to a hard drive attached to my MacPro. Is there a way to do this? I'd like some help.

I'd like to import my camera video to a hard drive attached to a Mac Pro. Has anyone been successful doing this? Please help?

If you use iMovie, you need to import it into iMovie.
What storage does your camera have? SD card? That's easy: plug it into Mac and then drag the footage from the SD card to the external drive.

  • How can I import iphone 4 videos to iMovie 09?

I tried different ways to import my videos from iphone 4 (.mov) to iMovie 09 but I had no success. I transfer the video to my iMac using image capture, then try to import the video to iMovie, but seems iMovie does not recognize the video format .mov from the iphone 4. Can anyone tell me how can I do this?
Thanks a lot for the help

I have no problems with iphone 4 video, have you edited it on the phone or anything.

  • Importing iphone 4 video to imovie looks stretched/distorted

I imported my iphone 4 video movie to iphoto. I then saved it to my desktop. I then imported from the desktop to imovie. However, when i play it from imovie it looks all stretched out (horizontally). When i play the video from iphoto or from my desktop, it appears fine using the default quicktime. Can someone help me?

I also struggled with the same problem for a week (even though my files were .mov already). I found this steps helpful: opening the video clip in quicktime first, then Export it to a certain folder (desktop would be the easiest) using a 720p format (found on the dropdown menu under the "Save As" or "File Name" bar) and then import the video to imovie. This time, the video should not be stretched anymore.
    Hope this helps!

  • Problems importing 2 hour video into IMOVIE

I'm having trouble importing a video into IMOVIE. The video I want to import is in Itunes. I tried to import it in IMOVIE. It showed a loading screen like it was going to import but then it finished and stopped after about 3 minutes and none of the video was imported. I have imported a movie this length before(2 hours) and it took about 2.5 hours to import. So obviously there is something wrong because importing a video should take longer than 3 minutes. Someone please help me as to what I need to do or what I am doing wrong.

    Thanks Rick and Mylenium
    Thanks that worked!
I thought that changing the frame rate in the composition settings would have worked.
Instead what I should have done is to go the the footage in the Project Panel then right-click on the footage > Interpret Footage > Main... then Conform to frame rate: Frame rate: 23.986607 (or whatever more accurate frame rate your footage actually is)
I used the more accurate frame rate reading from VLC which went to 5 decimal places. I got that info from the top menu in Tools > Codec Information
Its a shame AE doesn't  pick up on the more accurate fps. It seems that all the videos from my iPhone 4 have slightly different frame rates and I guess I will have to interpret each clip properly.
I hear that the frame rate on the iPhone 4 is different depending on the lighting? I wonder why that would be the case?
Hope this helps anybody else that might face this problem.
    Cheers

  • Importing Flip MinoHD videos into iMovie '09

I've successfully managed to import videos into iMovie '09 from my Flip MinoHD. There's one annoying thing, though...
When I plug the camera into my computer, iPhoto opens instead of iMovie. Does anyone have any idea how to tell Leopard to open the right program for the MinoHD?

I would suggest that in GarageBand you use SHARE/TO iTunes or SHARE/To disk.
You can either use no compression or use Compression and choose AAC encoder.
Start iMovie. The track should be available from within iTunes through the Media Browser in iMovie.
If you shared to disk, you will have to locate it in the FInder and drag it into your iMovie Project from there. I do not recommend this, because if you ever move your file to another location, your project will not be able to find it.
That assumes you want to continue editing in iMovie.
Alternatively, you could finish your iMovie, then SHARE/TO MEDIA BROWSER. Then in Garageband, bring the video file into your project from the Media Browser in Garageband, and continue audio processing in GB. Then you Share the finished product through GarageBand.

  • Why can't I import sound with video into iMovie from digital camera?

This is disturbing. I have a digital video camera that took great video + sound. I import into iMovie (using my DV cable that came with the camera) and get video but no sound.
Now, in the past the sound came in, but no longer. Any and all advise is requested. I have to make number videos of lectures starting Wednesday evening and have to be able to provide video with audio.
    Thanks.

Try importing video shot with the camera's internal
microphone. If that doesn't work either, the mic is
    not the problem.
I have no problem importing sound with video when using the internal video camera mic. No problem (other than sound quality issues with the speaker being 40 feet away from the camera's internal mic!
But I can play back the video made with the external mic in the camera and the sound is stunningly clear, crisp and loud. It's just a matter of getting it out of the camera into my Mac. I don't think it's the microphone; it must be the computer.
I just find it sad to believe that Apple's software is so limited--even in Final Cut Express HD.

  • Cannot import the whole video into imovie 08

Hi. I've successfully imported video from my Sony Handicam, using imovie 06 in the past, without any problems. However, I recently upgraded to 08 and it only allows me to import 50 minutes worth and then rewinds the tape! When I check the memory available on my hard drive it seems that I still have half the drive space left! Any help would be appreciated - this is driving me mad!

    Hi
Not knowing. I would start a new user/account - log into this and re-try.
BUT 50 min - indicates a serious project not just some minutes to YouTube.
iMovie'08 is more for short doings. If You had iM HD 6 - it's now
in the folder Applications/iMovie previous versions.
(If not download from Apple. iLife08 owners are entitled to do this)
Update this to iM 6.0.4 and You will have Your movie done. I think iM08 reduces the quality on top
    of all else missing.
So if You are doing a DVD - please work in iM6 and keep frustration to a low.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Importing Sony HD video to iMovie '08

I am encountering issues importing HD video from my Sony HDR-SR11 camera on iMovie 7.1.4 using an iMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.5). Prior to upgrading the OS, the import worked great on numerous occasions. Now for the majority of clips that I import I receive an error upon conclusion of the import process: "An Error Occurred During Import: There was a problem importing x of x clips from your camera. Please review the imported movies carefully." This seems to be the same issue encountered on this archived post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1794970), where there was no successful resolution. I do have the camera connected directly to the iMac via USB port. Has anyone been able to find a solution for this issue? I might upgrade to iLife '11 but I would prefer to hear definitively that this issue is resolved with the new software.
Separately, but also perhaps as a workaround to above, can anyone provide guidance on how to take the native files from the Sony camera which I've backed up separately on my Mac, and directly convert these so that iMovie can use them as event files? I only seem to be able to do this using the direct camera import.
    Thanks!

  • Can't import ESP mode Video into iMovie...

I can't import video recorded in ESP mode into iMovie or Final Cut. Is there some trick to it, or am I kinda screwed?? PLease help me if you can..

If your camera has analog inputs, then yes. Unfortunately, today that's a big "if" as most cameras only has analog OUTputs (to play on a TV).

  • Importing iphone 4 video to imovie

I just filmed some videos off my iphone 4, however I'm having trouble bringing them into imovie. They're in iphoto, but don't show up under iphoto videos or my media. When I drag them onto my desktop and then import them, they show up very very wide and disproportioned. Any recommendations?

Are you still having this problem? I was too and no one online had answers so after a couple of beers and brainfood, here is how I resolved it:
~ Import the video to a folder on desktop
~ Open video with QuickTime (video will orient and display properly)
    ~ Go to File/Export
~ Change the name in the Save As box (leave the extension as is though)
~ Below at Export, Select "Movie to QuickTime Movie" then click Options
~ In the Movie Settings box that appears click the "Size..." button
~ This brings up the "Export Size Settings" box, select "Current" in Dimensions
~ Leave everything as it is and click OK
~ Click OK in the Movie Settings box
    ~ Click Save
After the export is complete, drag the new file into iMovie and you will see it is correct. You will have vertical black letterbox bars on the sides but the dimensions will be correct.
