Importing home videos for Apple TV

I have home made videos that I had in my Itunes until my drive crashed and I had to replace it.  I can not seem to drag and drop the videos from the drive they are located on into Itunes 11.  The video does not show up in any of the lists, movie or tv, nor does it show up in the 'search' window when I search for them.  They DO however show up in the list of videos to watch online on my apple tv.  But here's the problem, cause I dragged and dropped it three times into Itunes 'trying' to import it, the video shows up three times online on the apple tv but no where in the Itunes!!!  Now I have the video three times in the apple tv, no way to find the file and no way to delete the extra copies.
Itunes 11 sort of *****.
Any help?
thanks

Try using the Share > iTunes... menu item in iMovie, then sync the movie to Apple TV from iTunes. This is the easiest way of getting an iMovie project onto Apple TV. Is this what you've been doing?

I am trying to import my home videos into Apple TV. I have created a video consisting of many clips which are edited together into a coherent whole. This has been saved as an iMovie event. When I try to export this event through Quicktime, all I see are individual clips for import. Where do I find the whole editing video?

  • Panasonic VDR-D100... having issues importing home videos!

    Hello,
I am having problems importing home videos from my Panasonic VDR-D100 camcorder onto my computer - any suggestions? Do I need additional software or maybe I'm just doing something wrong?
I am connecting my camera via USB then turning it on, opening up iMovie and nothing comes up! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Jen

This may seen like a stupid question, but is the camera set to "Play"? And does the screen show the words "USB Connected" or something to that effect?
Also, after everything is connected have you tried navigating to the File menu and selecting "Import from Camera..."?

Are you using the Adjust Date and Time option or the Batch Change option?  If it's the former try the latter.  If you get the same results  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import  the same video file and check to see if the same problem persists.

  • Import home video DVD's into iMovie

I want to import my home video DVD's into iMovie for editing and backup. What is the best way to do this? I have already tried creating a disk image, but somehow when I open these images with iMovie, some parts of the original video are missing. (for example the video on DVD is 60 minutes, but the video opened on iMovie is 50 minutes). I also tried to convert to MPEG 2 using MPEG Streamclip, and purchased the MPEG2 Playback component from Apple Store, but it turns out that this component was intended for earlier versions of OS X, so I could not even install it. I am currently at a lockdown, please help me out!!!

There are directions on the MPEG Streamclip website on how to get the MPEG2 Playback component installed on your computer (I'm assuming your running Mac OS X 10.7). I'm cutting and pasting them here in case someone else runs into the same problems.
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component
The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard
Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).
If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg": if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on "Account" in the store menu, then click "Downloadable Software Purchases," enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.
If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

  • HT204264 Home Videos for iCloud?

With the new Photos App for OS X releasing a few weeks ago, I've taken the time to upload my families 9,800 photos to iCloud Photo Library.
Now that it's finished I would like to add my families Home Videos.  I don't see an App specifically designed to do so.  I do see an album in Photos that is for videos.
Is this the place that Apple has decided to set aside for peoples home movies?
With everyone shooting video these days more so than in the past, I was expecting a better way to have your home videos in the iCloud.
I have another question on the Photos App:
I have always kept copies of some videos and pics on my families iOS devices.  I have chose to sync them from my iMac.
I'm going to assume that I should sync each iOS device one last time and remove all photos from each device before turning on the iCloud Photo Library option?
I 'm not sure that if I do so if it will try to upload existing photos from each iOS device into iCloud Photo Library or not?

You can continue to use iTunes, or you can move them to Photos. Up to you. In Photos you'll be able to better organize them in Albums and Folders, just as you can with images. The disadvantage is that they will take a lot of space in your iCloud Photos Library, possibly forcing you to pay for more storage.
Normally, once you upload all your files to iCloud and turn on iCloud Photos Library on all devices, everything should sync with everything else. I would, however, suggest doing one last sync with all your devices, making sure you copy everything to iPhoto (iTunes does not backup photos or videos), just as a precaution. I would also suggest leaving Photo Stream and Photo Sharing turned on, until you confirm everything works in Photos.

  • Problem Importing Home Video

I just transferred a home video from VHS to a DVD-R but when I tried to import it to iMovie it set that the format was not compatible with iMovie. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to convert this video so it will work in iMovie. Thanks

I would recommend that you buy the Apple MPEG2 Playback Component ($20) and MPEG Streamclip (free).
Put your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player comes up, quit it. THen open the DVD in the finder.
Open MPEG Streamclip. Drag the VOB files from the DVD to MPEG Streamclip. If it offers to repair timecodes say yes. In Streamclip, FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec, and give the file a name. You can then import this file into iMovie.

  • Playing Home Videos on Apple TV

    Hi,
I have a few movies on my laptop in .mp4 format which I can easily watch on iTunes on my laptop. I recently purchased Apple TV 3 and tried to play those videos via airplay with no success. I tried plying the video file on my laptop iTunes and then selecting airplay to have the output as Apple TV but the spinning busy logo just appears before my request times out, and then I tried directly playing the video using the apple TV remote and going into Home Videos but once again, all I receive is the spinning icon.
So using HandBrake I converted the file, firstly by selecting the Preset function and then Apple TV 3. The m4v file has finally downloaded and I have added this to iTunes. It plays fine on my laptop but when I try to play it on Apple TV I get the same issues.
Occasionally when I watch the video via iTunes and the select airplay, the last video still appears on the TV but nothing further plays and a spinning busy icon remains in the bottom left.
Should I change the HandBrake preset function or am I doing something else wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi griff,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my query. Unfortunately the troubleshoot didn't help.
As mentioned, the video plays fine in iTunes on the mac and the AirPlay option is always there, but when I select the Apple TV option it just goes straight to a loading screen and then after two minutes the Apple TV screen goes back to the menu as the request times out. My mac's iTunes is completely up to date, as is the software on the Apple TV.
I have tried a variety of video files, all of them work on iTunes and half of them I have used Handbrake to attain Apple TV and Apple TV 3 friendly versions - but Apple TV just cannot play them.
Do you have any other suggestions I could perhaps try?
    Cheers

  • Home videos on apple tv

I want to watch my digitial home videos on my apple tv.  They are AVCHD videos taken on a digital camcorder and saved on my computer.  In iTunes, I selected File, add folder to library and selected the folders containing my videos.  But nothing appears in the Movies Library in iTunes and nothing shows up on my apple tv.  What am I doing wrong?

I use Sony Camcorders and Sony Vegas software for editing. I don't use Apple TV for displaying these videos on my home TV.  Instead, I use a WD Net TV player, which has a USB port so that I can attach a one TB hard drive with all of my AVCHD videos.  Works perfectly if these videos are less than 10 minutes long.  I make 9 minute clips and give them a title with a letter.  For example, after a vacation, I make these 9 minute clips and save them as follows: 2012 Vacation A, 2012 Vacation B, and 2012 Vacation C. I store these videos on the 1 TB hardrive but keep the original clips on another drive.
The WD Net TV player costs around 100 dollars. This probably saved me hundreds of hours to convert the video to an Apple format, which right now doesn't support 1080i or 1080p video. When I want to watch family videos,  I unplug the Apple TV and plug in the small WD Net TV player. It might seem like a hassle but these videos look great.
Unfortunately, I couldn't play my pre HD videos with this player. All of my pre-HD videos had to be converted to MPEG 2 NTSC widescreen format to look good on a TV set using this WD Net TV player. If you capture the video from the original tapes, these mpeg 2 clips look much better than viewing the same videos on DVD's.  Also, you can instantly click and play any video using this type of player. The convenience of playing these videos through a player is wonderful. It's similar to the difference between using CD's for music vs. an Ipod, although in this case, the mpeg 2 files look much better than converting them to DVD's.
Besides Sony Vegas software, I have found that AVS4YOU software does these conversions nicely.
You might wonder why not use the Apple TV player instead of the WDNET TV player.  The answer is that Hi Def AVCHD videos don't convert nicely for Apple TV. Also, for the older videos that need to be converted,  these conversions are fast because the file sizes are much smaller.

  • Import home video files vob to imove

We've made the conversion from PC to Mac and I would like to store all of my home videos from disc onto the iMac to watch via Apple TV. All of my video files were recorded on a SOny camcorder and saved as vob files. Is there an easy way to watch these saved files from the iMac to the big screen via Apple TV?

Check out This Thread about using MPEG Streamclip to convert your movies to MPEG-4. Make sure you notice the need for the additional MPEG-2 playback component for Quicktime 7.  Hope that helps you.

  • How can I watch home videos on Apple TV without using home streaming?

I have an ATV3 and want to watch a few home videos using it. I have successfully converted the files to .mp4 format using videora apple tv converter. The problem I have is that these videos do not show up on my apple tv unless I use home sharing with my laptop. Is there a way to add these videos to my apple tv library without having to use home sharing? I have my files on a laptop and the computer is not always on or awake, and I find it really inconvenient to have to get my lazy butt off the couch when wanting to watch my home videos just to go and turn on my computer. I know that I can set the computer to wake when the network is trying to use it, but that would mean I would always have to have my power adapter connected to my laptop and I really do not want to do this because it will kill the battery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Unfortunately not.

  • Encoding home videos for IPhone, AppleTV and IPod Touch

    Hi Folks,
I'm on latest version of Compressor and FCP.
Objective: to encode home video transfers to a format that is suitable for AppleTV, IPhone and Ipod Touch - in an efficient manner (this is key)
99% of the videos would be VHS and camcorder tapes in SD format.
I mentioned efficient manner b/c I tried running and Iphone encode through the presets in Compressor for a 2 hour VHS transfer - nothing fancy, just 12 chapters. I'm on my 2009 quad mac pro with 8 GBs RAM.
The estimator through the 'share' feature said it was going to take over 3 hours before I quit. The other reason I quit is b/c it won't be compatible with AppleTV.
I created DVDs for my client so I tried handbrake using the video_Ts folder and it created an IPhone/IPod Touch file no problem - only 40 minutes. Not bad. I tried the Universal preset and QT gives me an error that the finalized file isn't compatible.
I guess my question is: does it matter quality wise, if I run through Handbrake vs compressor? For this particular client, there are 12 hours worth of videos to compress.
I know about setting up a cluster on my mac pro, but everytime I try more than 1 file in a batch, the subsequent files fail. I can't even set a cluster up with my 2006 mac pro either - yes, I've had discussions with FCP support staff and have tickets. It's a bug
So, any thoughts? 3 hours (at a minimum) seems awfully long to compress.
Of course, I would be charging my client for these videos, but at that length of time, I'm not sure what a feasible cost would be for both sides.
    Cheers,
    keebler

If you are send out self contained movies to be processed in Compressor with Standard Presets (no adjustment to frame controls) you should be getting decent speed. If you want I can try encoding a two hour DV clip. How far did the encoding get before you stopped it? The estimates are not necessarily accurate at the beginning.
Also if you can get the Clusters working (disregarding the size of the batches for a moment) should help with speed. I run into limits of around 20 per batch so make multiple batches. Not the most optimal way, but could be worth it to get them all going. Set them up for overnight and it should be done in the AM.
Creating off the Video_TS folder is compressing compressed material, so it could (should) reduce quality when compared to encoding original source material, though based on the quality of the source it may be more academic...
I would try to get the Compressor end working myself. (Ignore using share, just open Compressor and put movies into it.)

  • Import home videos onto ITunes

How can i import my home videos/ DVDs onto Itunes just as you can import your audio CDs onto Itunes?

I had home videos that were sat in my iTunes library no problem but I couldn't get them across to my iPhone, even putting them in their own playlist, ticking all the right tabs in the synch menu etc. After a lot of playing around I found that if you right click on the video, select Get Info, go to Options and then in 'Media Kind', manually change it to Music Video and it will then happily go into the music videos playlist and will synch straight across.
    Hope this helps.
