Importing Images w/ Transparent Areas

Hi Folks,
I'm working on creating a form and I am creating graphics for layout.  I am using Illustrator CS3 to create them, but when I try the various formats of files, I cannot get them to display properly in Designer ES2.
EPS - The CMYK color in ES2 is much different than my Illustrator colour
TIFF - According to the help doesn't support CMYK?
"Designer ES2 supports Monochrome (1 color component 1-bit depth), Greyscale (1 color component 8-bit depth), RGB (3 color components 8-bit depth), and Palette (1 color component 1,2,4,8-bit depths) TIF images. "
PNG - It is not including my transparent areas
JPG - Does not support transparency
BMP - Does not support CMYK and transparency
GIF - Does not support CMYK
Anyone been able to find a good format that supports CMYK and transparency?
Scott

Hi Scott,
I have used PNG, but you need to save them for 'web & devices' in Photoshop. Illustrator CS4 also has a 'save for web& devices' as well. Not sure about CS3.
This is the only way I know of getting CMYK (or RGB) images with transparencies into LC designer.
Good luck,
Niall

When I try to import images from my iphone into aperture, they come in as gray boxes. When I click on these I get a message that the file format is unsupported. Anyone else running into this?!

Also, I tried image capture and tried to open the jpg's in preview. This also didn't work and said the format is unsupported. Photoshop gives the following message:

I'm trying to import a picture that has a transparent backgound so when i layer it over video its just the picture itself not the canvas it was made on.

    Whats my next step?

    Thank you.

I am importing an image (GIF) with transparency properties as a drop zone. How do i make the background of this image transparent. This image serves no purpose other than just being an image. It is not a button or has any associated actions.
    Please help - Thanks

Don't use GIF, use TIFF instead. This will preserve the transaparency.

  • RE: Transparent areas on images used inPictureButtons

    Thanks all for the responses.
I have talked with Forte Tech Support and there is a way to get this to
work. To get transparent areas in an image on a PictureButton, you
simply manipulate the FillColor of the PictureButton widget itself.
Apparently, Forte takes the fill color of the button and makes it the
transparent color for the image. For instance, if you set the fill color
for the PictureButton to white, then any white areas on the image become
    transparent.
A Tech Note should appear shortly explaining this issue.

I have a GIF image with transparent areas that I'd like to use in a
PictureButton. Will Forte recognize the transparent areas in the GIF
format and color those areas with the system settings for buttons? I've
tried everything I could think of, but the transparent areas are still
    being painted gray.
I am running Forte 3.0d on Windows 95.

How do I import images from my hard drive without losing resolution? My original files after import are significantly smaller. What should I do?

Hi Keith, and all others chiming in, I do have the correct option checked in advanced settings telling iPhoto to copy the images into the library. What is a refernced library? Perhaps this is where I am getting confused. I exported my entire photo library from an old iMac5 to my external hard drive, from there I attempted to import the entire library to my new iMac. Am I overlooking an obvious and easy way to import from the hard drive to the new iMac--I dragged the entire photo pholder from the hard drive to the open window of iPhoto on the new computer. Now, I only get preview file sizes in iPhoto, unless I have my external drive open. Perhaps I need to import the original images from the hard drive in a different way...?! (This is making me feel pretty stupid.)

  • Why are my imported images appearing as mirror images

Why are my camera imported images appearing as mirror images in IPHOTO?

I guess you have things figured out but you do seem a bit confused - iPhoto and PhotoBooth are two totally different applications and iPhoto can not possibly import a mirrow image of a photo and PhotoBooth can not edit iPhoto photos

  • Way to verify if newly imported images ARE NOT already in database?

i keep my images in Aperture on v3.4.5 on my Mac Pro and in the past have simply imported images using USB. after starting to use Photo Stream over the last two years it has seemed to me (just from a kind of naive look) that some of my images from my iPhone get imported to the MBP into Photo Stream (Aperture v3.5.1), some to the Mac Pro, and (i assume) some to both.
it also appears to me that if you /change/ your settings for Do Not Import Duplicates from Yes to No, or from No to Yes, (i.e. check or uncheck this option) that it is very easy to ALSO end up (say for instance on my Mac Pro where all my images are supposed to be neatly stored) with /some/ of your images ONLY in the PhotoStream project /and/ also to have some other images in BOTH the Photo Stream projects /and/ in the "non-Photo Stream projects" (i.e. in "regular" projects).
just having this latter issue basically makes a total mess of your database (since you have /some/ of your images /only/ in the Photo Stream projects) but if you add the former issue (some images only in the MBP database and some only in the Mac Pro database) then things are almost truly wrecked.
so - what i would like to know is if i EXPORT images from my MacBook Pro and i then IMPORT them into the Mac Pro database should Aperture pick up duplicates if i have Do Not Import Duplicates checked? also, i would like to know if it is possible to VERIFY through some method whether the newly imported images are, or are not, already in the database.
i am currently exporting images from the monthly dated Photo Stream projects on my MacBook Pro and then importing the images into the respective Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro - and it does in fact seem to me that these photos do NOT exist in the Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro. i say this since the new images get added to the Photo Stream project for that month with the next chronological number in that month (at least on my first month i have tested). they also do not seem to exist already in the Photo Stream database in, for instance, the next month which is where i would logically look for them. this then would mean that there is a very large amount of image loss in my database which is a problem.
so what i would like to do is /check/ somehow to see if the images may in fact be already in the database but happen to have not made it into the Photo Stream project for the month (i.e. they /only/ exist somewhere else in the non-Photo Stream projects).
note: for instance can i manually search somehow for "IMG_6789", which just came in with 250+ images in from "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my MBP and is now in "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my Mac Pro to verify whether this already exists or has been newly added?
please not that i cannot visually search for anything because the database is too large and i do not know where this image may reside without searching or finding it through a Aperture command.
    THANKS

hi leonie. thank you for this help.
first can you please tell me if setting Photo Stream on my Mac Pro to ON and turning Do Not Import Duplicates to CHECKED/ON (say if i start new with Photo Stream) has the consequence of ONLY importing images to my PS projects via WiFI and that any time i hook up my phone via USB (as i /had/ been doing) Aperture will then only import anything that has NOT already been imported to PS projects and it will put this in a "non-Photo Stream project"? i mean, i have realized recently that turning this ON may have completely changed the way i import images and done so in a way that puts some images from Camera Roll in one place and some images in another place.
i will divide up the rest into two parts:
    1. can you please tell me what the actual difference is between exporting images as Kind Versions and Kind Originals? i am (unfortunately) already doing this as Kind Versions and it appears to be working at least visually - by which i mean when i import photos in this manner to the Mac Pro that these images come into the monthly projects with images and file numbers that do not currently exist in this album. this means that these images (so far ALL of them) were in the laptop database but not on the desktop database (at least as far as Photo Stream is concerned which is all i can figure out right now).
i think it is in fact possible that these images may exist elsewhere in the database (and that Aperture is not picking up the fact that these are duplicates for some reason) but unless i am missing something won't this simply mean that i have a FULL SET of images in the Photo Stream database? anyway, i am not sure which is better - to catch these coming in as duplicates and to not import them or to import them into the Photo Stream projects, have them all in the database in these projects, and to deal with how they exist out of the Photo Stream projects by putting them where they belong and then running a de-duplication routine.
    2. the issue that i have been able to understand (with your help) is that when i turned Photo Stream ON, that this Do Not Import Duplicates setting was somewhere buried in my UI independent of Photo Stream settings (which has it's own poorly explained and poorly understood settings) and that this was set to ON or it was set to OFF. if it was CHECKED/ON then i was /ONLY/ importing images to my PS projects which was a total 180 degree change from my normal Aperture methodology and simply put images into PS projects and NOTHING went into my normal projects to sort later as i had been doing. then to compound the issue - when i hooked up my iPhone it would ONLY import images that did /not/ get synced to Aperture and get uploaded to the PS projects and it would tell me how many were already imported and how many were new and APERTURE WOULD SPLIT THESE UP INTO non-PS projects and PS projects which basically makes a total mess of my database.
i mean, what you were able to show me is that i DON'T KNOW what i had set originally but i think i had this setting set to OFF which would give me images both in the PS projects and in the non-PS projects as duplicates (assuming there weren't other issues) but i would ideally like to have had PS projects as just a kind of appendage or an unimportant piece of my database for reference only and to keep importing images via USB as i had done in the past and if this is what i had wanted (and if Photo Stream was implemented in an intuitive way that i as an intelligent computer person could understand) - well i would have set the do not import duplicates to OFF so that the PS images were duplicates of my normal USB imports.
but this - as i write - makes me realize that it has the unintended consequence of letting me import CAMERA ROLL images that were not deleted into my "non-Photo Stream projects" which as you indicate i don't want so this setting seems like it sets up a classic catch 22.

  • RE: Transparent areas on images used inPictureButton

I have never had any success in getting Forte to recognize the transparent
areas of GIF images on PictureButtons. I use two different techniques to
    achieve this "transparent" look:
    (1) Monochrome bitmaps DO behave as truly transparent images, both on
PictureButtons and in OutlineFields, under all Forte's supported
windowing systems and no matter what you use for the FillColor of
the button or outline. (But then of course you can't use colours
    in your image.)
    (2) If the PictureButton's FillColor is Inherit or White, you will see
that any white pixels in your image appear grey. You can make use
of this by making the background of the image some colour which is
not used in the picture itself, and setting the FillColor of the
PictureButton to that colour. You have to choose this colour carefully.
Even if you pick a colour from the standard Windows 16-colour palette,
say red, you will find that it doesn't match the Forte colour Bright Red
under all possible Control Panel colour depth settings. The only
colours which work all the time are white, black and light grey (Forte's
Gray 2) but of course these are all colours you normally want to use
in the picture itself! If you are developing exclusively for Windows
clients, you can always use Gray 2, since the PictureButtons are going
to look this colour anyway, regardless of the FillColor you assign or
the button colour the user has chosen in the Control Panel Display
settings. (At least, this is so for V2 - I don't know about V3 but
from what you've said it sounds like it is the same.)
I would love to know if there are any other ways to do this because I
nearly went mad trying to make images on PictureButtons and OutlineFields
transparent under all 3 windowing systems!

I tried expanding the canvas (using Photoshop) to a 16 x 9 width-to-height ratio with Black fill. Worked perfectly in iPhoto.

  • How to exclude transparent areas in Image Trace

I have a logo file, saved as PNG, that is black on transparent.  Very simple file, just stylized black lettering on a transparent background. In Illustrator CS5, I can place that file, do a "Live Trace" in "Lettering" mode, and Illustrator will correctly ignore the transparent areas when I expand the trace.  After expanding, I'm left with scalable paths and an easy way to change the fill color to have the logo work with my background.
Fast forward to Illustrator CS6.  I try to do the same thing but a) there is no "lettering" preset for Image Trace and b) there is no setting I have yet found to cause Illustrator to ignore the transparent areas when I expand.  If I then fill, everything inside the bounds of the placed image (the square containing the logo) is filled with that color.  The only way I've found to get similar results is to go through the layers panel after the Expand and deselect each piece of the image that should not be filled.  I have a hard time believing this is the desired approach.
I freely admit that I'm an Illustrator novice and I suspect that there is something one of you Illustrator experts thinks is obvious that I'm missing.  I'd sure appreciate some guidance in the right direction.

I doubt that the Trace feature in CS 6 is a big improvement to CS 5
Here look what might help you with this you might even be able to do a better job in Photoshop.
I'm using your screen shot so the trace is not a good one but shows you the steps you can take to make this work better.
Even though it is an image you can edit the colors some what here I went to Edit>Edit Colors>Adjust Color Balance ad turn the Cyan down to "0" and move the black slide a bit higher as well.
The I did my trace and remove the clipping paths there are 2 clipping paths the way you remove the path and compund path for the square is to select one edge of the psth with the direct select tool, you need smark guides turned on to see the paths.
the hit delete and the hit delete again and repeat for the second compound path as such path willpreven the sqaure to becoming a background filled path.
It should be noproblem filling this without a Live Paint Group it is just that you are not familiar with what is happening to the art.

  • Why are imported images rotated?

When I import images (jpeg) into Pages, they are rotated 90 or 180 degrees. In Finder, iPhoto, and even Powerpoint this does not happen.
How can I prevent images from being rotated when imported into Pages?
    iMac Intel 2.16Ghz 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

iPhoto can easily rotate photos. It is easy enough that you could do a lot of them in one session:
    1. Rotate all your photos in iPhoto using the rotate icon on the toolbar. (Select the photo and click on the rotate icon.)
    2. Quit iPhoto (this saves the photo in the new rotated format.)
    3. Open Pages and import your photos using the media browser. They should all be rotated correctly.
You can also batch rotate photos.
    1. Select them all in the iPhoto window. Hold the ⌘ key down while selecting to select non-contiguous items, or shift to select contiguous items.
    2. Click on the rotate icon. All photos will be rotated.
    3. Quit iPhoto

  • Imported image and making white space transparent...

I need to make the white space around an image transparent without having to use the clipping mask tool. In Freehand, you simply click a button and the white background disappears. I need to use that exact technique to hide the white background.
How can I do this in InDesign?
    Thank you.

There's quick, and there's right. They're rarely in the same space.
To make a transparent background can be a complex and fussy process. While InDesign could include a general tool to do so, it would likely be inferior to actually making the image background transparent in a native image editing tool.
I've found most such embedded features to be adequate only for low end work - e.g., they leave a background halo on the image, or a noisy edge, or other image problems. I really don't see it as a flaw or omission that ID forces you to use a proper tool to create the background transparency.

  • Images with transparent backgrounds in MDM

I've got several images in MDM with transparent backgrounds, yet when i look at these in image manager (or thumbnails in data manager) they look terrible. The transparency is black for example, among other issues. These images are all okay in photoshop, they have been saved as .png and imported through the data manager.
Has this import ruined these image files on the way in? When my search engines etc extract the images, what of the transparencies?

    Hi Adam,
MDM makes use of Internet Explorer quite frequently. I can imagine that this engine is also used to display images in MDM. However, Internet Explorer in version 6 does not support transparency in PNG images. That is why the black background occurs.
Since your images after upload are only saved in a binary object in the database, you should not encounter any data loss when using the same images. If you need to create variants, I would consider using Photoshop for the creation of those.
I hope that helps you further.
    Best regards

  • Framing image with transparent background png frame

    hi,
i'm trying to find a way to frame images with transparent background png frames...
    what i'm doing now is
1-drawing my image on a panel
2-creating a 2nd image using the frame's filename, stretching this 'frame-image' to a size slighlty larger than that of my main image and drawing the 'frame-image'
the problems with this method are:
1-depending on the width of the frame, the frame sometimes hides parts of the image (thick frame), and sometimes there is a gap between the frame and the image (thin frame).
2-if the image file containing the frame is larger than the frame (Ex: The image is 300x300, the frame is centered in this image and is 200x200; as opposed to the image is 200x200 and the frame takes up all the space), when i position the 'frame-image' near the top left corner of the image i want to frame, the frame appears at the wrong place (shifted down and to the right). This is due to the fact that i'm placing the top corner of the created 'frame-image' and not the frame, who is not in the top corner of my 'frame-image'.
Is there a way to do what i'm trying to do???
My ideas (which i don't know how to achieve are)
1-To 'analyse' my transparent background png file and
         1-only keep the frame,
         2-calculate the frame's thickness
    OR
2-Let java do the analyzing for me and tell it to frame my image with the frame in the png file
please feel free to ask for more explanations if my description/question is confusing,
    thanks.
