Importing images - why 3 boxes?

a quark user who is trying to make the switch...
when i import a graphic into quark, it comes in one box. when i import into ID i get 3. i understand the container box (used with selection tool), and the item box (used with direct selection tool and has a gold frame). but what is that third box? it has a thin light blue outline and seems to be exactly like the item box but with different dimensions. this is confusing. i keep selecting it by mistake when i want to select the item. it does not move the item, but seems more like an illustrator box in which i can change its shape. can i get rid of it? if i want to change the shape i'll do so in another program. this may be a dumb question, if so, sorry.
thanks

here it is again...
ok - so relating this in quark terms:
the thin blue box is the window in which the content (gold box) is placed
the heavier blue bounding box is only for sizing and moving, rotating. basically the thin blue box and the heavier blue box with the adjustment handles are the same thing.
it seems to me that the there is no need to even see the thin blue box, unless i want to change the rectangular shape into a trapezoid. is that true? (which is very rare). i would only select the thin blue box with the direct selection tool if i want to do that. otherwise, to move it around i will just use the selection tool (black arrow) and to move the content around i use the direct selection tool (hollow arrow).
the reason all this confusion came about because i'd go to move the content around with the direct selection tool and end up changing the shape of the window (thin blue) by inadvertantly selecting one of its sides or corners.
i think i understand, if i don't have this correct, let me know
assuming i do, thanks to all for your patience and explanations. i realize this may seem very basic to you, it has been a source of confusion for me because it is much more nuanced than the way quark behaves. more sophistication and elegance translates into more layers of understanding, as well as more options to do things... thats a good thing ...i think
thanks again! - pat

  • Importing images: why low quality?

Hi, I inserted a high quality jpeg into a slide for a demo.
    (Here it is
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/23205536@N04/2777619229/sizes/o/
But when the demo is rendered in captivate, it looks crappy.
Why? (I should not that it looks acceptable when inside the edit
    screen).
I had to scale the image down within captivate so that it
    fits inside a single slide.
Is captivate just mediocre in importing raster graphics, or
is there something I'm doing wrong?
    rj

    Hi rj
Try examining the Slide Properties where the image is of poor
quality. In the Slide Properties should be an option for adjusting
image quality for that slide only.

Mac OSX, 10.7.5, LR 5.6  After creating a new folder in the Destination section and importing images, the new folder name appears as 2010, no matter what name I give it.  Why is it doing this?

I am experiencing Mavericks failing to copy subdirectories from usb sticks, I am backing up game saves from a console. Both sticks I use are fine, same permissions of course since the console wrote the files. Sometimes it copies, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to the mounting process.
Thank God Apple hasn't (yet) broken bash.

Ok, the issue seem to be solved. The problem was this:
The many hundred files (raw and xmp per image) have been downloaded by ftp in no specific order. Means - a couple of files in the download queue - both raw and xmps. Most of the time, the small xmp files have been finished loading first and hence the "last change date" of these xmp files was OLDER than the "last change date" of the raw file - Lightroom then seem to ignore the existence of the xmp file and does not read it during import.(a minute is enough to run into the problem)
By simply using the ftp client in a way that all large raw files get downloaded first followed by the xmp files, we achieved that all "last changed dates" of the xmp files are NEWER than the related raw files. (at least not older)
And then LR is reading them and all metadata information has been set / read correctly.
    So this is solved.

  • Imported image's position moves when updated in Indesign CS6. Why??

After modifying an imported image from illustrator, the imported image's position moves within the frame of Indesign CS6 when the link is updated.

You have not provided any relevant information, so nobody can know. you can simply have added content that expands the bounding box. Well, whatever, ask in the relevant forums and be much more specific.

  • Why are my imported images appearing as mirror images

Why are my camera imported images appearing as mirror images in IPHOTO?

I guess you have things figured out but you do seem a bit confused - iPhoto and PhotoBooth are two totally different applications and iPhoto can not possibly import a mirrow image of a photo and PhotoBooth can not edit iPhoto photos

  • LR4.4 - blacked out boxes when importing images from upgraded PSE10 catalogue [was: Lightroom 4]

I have been using photoshop elements 10 for over a year and decided it was time to upgrade to Lightroom for my photo workflow as I am doing more paid photography work.  I purchased and received my boxed full version of Lightroom 4 from B & H photovideo on Friday.  I installed it then went on-line and updated it with the download of lightroom 4.4.  Then I opened lightroom 4.4 for the first time and went to files and selected upgrade my photoshope elemnts catalog to lightroom.  Once that was completed I then tried to import images to lightroom 4 to work with them and all I get are blacked out or greyed out boxes in my slide strip at the bottom of the desktop window in import mode. When I point to each box it shows a file name but will not show the image.  I have spent all kinds of time reading and watching tutorials on opening images, importing images and catalogs  and I am FRUSTRATED....  Would really like to talk to someone to get this figured out.  I never thought it would be this difficult to use this program... HELP Please...

I would like to THANK YOU for your assistance in my situation.  I followed your suggestion and went into my monitor settings and did a manual reset to the default profile and went back to Lr and the images started popping up one at a time until all 7000+ were visable.  Just for the record, I am using Canon 1Ds Mark II, on a Quadcor AMD unlocked FX processor running Windows 7. I shoot in RAW and convert to JPG.  It would have been the last thing for me to look at on my monitor settings as all the other programs on my computer run without a glitch.  Thanks again for your help... Cheers!

  • Why am I not able to add keywords when importing images?

When I import images into LR, I am unable to add keywords in the relevant window. When I click in the window, it will not let me access. Very frustrating. Does anyone know why?

    Andrew,
I've never seen this problem come up. Can you provide a screen shot? Is the keyword entry panel greyed out? (What do you mean by "will not let me access?").
With a little more info or an example, we might be able to come up with the solution.

  • Why are imported images rotated?

When I import images (jpeg) into Pages, they are rotated 90 or 180 degrees. In Finder, iPhoto, and even Powerpoint this does not happen.
How can I prevent images from being rotated when imported into Pages?
    iMac Intel 2.16Ghz 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

iPhoto can easily rotate photos. It is easy enough that you could do a lot of them in one session:
    1. Rotate all your photos in iPhoto using the rotate icon on the toolbar. (Select the photo and click on the rotate icon.)
    2. Quit iPhoto (this saves the photo in the new rotated format.)
    3. Open Pages and import your photos using the media browser. They should all be rotated correctly.
You can also batch rotate photos.
    1. Select them all in the iPhoto window. Hold the ⌘ key down while selecting to select non-contiguous items, or shift to select contiguous items.
    2. Click on the rotate icon. All photos will be rotated.
    3. Quit iPhoto

  • Why can't I see recently imported images in my grid view?

I"m using Elements 12.  I recently imported new images and normally I can see the images in the grid view.  However, I cannot see these new images unless I click on each individual image to open the file.  All prior imported images are viewable in the grid view.

No, that just shows the carrier. I am looking for the setting>general>carrier tab from where you can select the carrier you want to connect to either automatically or manually. The previous iPhone 5 had it, Apple exchanged the set as it had a hardware problem and it's missing from the new set. Want to get it back

  • Importing images from all subfolders within a directory and only within that directory

    Hi All
I volunteered to oragnise my grandmas photo collection after I started using lightrooom.
My experience of lightroom started off great but has gone down hill since then. This should be very easy to do. Contanstant propblems now being able to read LR4 catalogs and upgrade them to LR5 format
My most recent problem is I have copied the entire contents of my grandmas computer to a portable hard driv
    Drive I:\ directory I:\grandma.
I now want to create a new catalog in lightroom so I can import all her photos (scattered all over the computer in various files, she had no structure) into one single folder, so everything is organised.
The problem is (I have tried lightroom 4 and 5 each with a different problem):
In lightroom 5 I open a new catalog, open the import dialog and point it to the directory I:\grandma, then I click the show all subfolders (it only recognises 150 image but there are at least a few thousand) I think it is only recognising the immediate folder even though I have the ALL photos option selected, and the copy all photos and import from subfolders options selected.) At the very least it is not recognising all the subfolders, in some cases there are about seven levels.
What is the maximum number of images you can import in one go? And how many nested subfolders can you have?
In lightroom 4 I open a new catalog and open the import dialog and point it to I:\grandma. However this time the import dialog box returns photos which I know are not in the directory I:\ grandmas. It is displaying a lot of my photos in the import dialog box (even though I have clearly selected the I:\grandma directory. when I use show in explorer I can see it is showing images from my C drive that it wants to import.
Why is it doing this when I have clearly selected I only want to import my grandmas photos into the catalog from the directory I:\grandma?
I have also followed Pete Green's directions here to 1. optimise the catalog ( I did it however not sure of the point when it is a new catalog with no images in it) and 2. remove xmp files of which there are none (see point 1.) http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1231573
    Please help.

UPDATE--> Manually adding folders (drag from explorer and drop on music libray) appears to be functioning as a work around. I have been testing individual folders and so far so good.
While this may be a workaround i have HUNDREDS of folders! =(

  • Suddenely Imports Duplicates -- Why?

I've been using Lightroom 2.7 (and earlier releases) for years, and I never had this problem before:
Both "File/Import Photos from Device..." and "File/Import Photos from Disk..." have imported **all** of the photos in the attached device or in the selected folder on the my latest two attempts, even though most of the photos were duplicates and I **did** check the "Don't re-import suspected duplicates" box.  When I looked at the catalog, I then saw duplicate copies of the same photos in the same catalog directories.  In each case several months had elapsed between the original and duplicate imports.
In the case of the camera, I don't see how anything about the image files could have changed.  In the case of the disk, it's a new CD-R on which I transferred the images the second time.  The images themselves have not changed, although the "Date Modified" of the files on the CD-R has.
Final twist:  I just tried re-importing some of the same images from this latest, CD-R (after deleting the first duplicate copies, and this time Lightroom recognized them as duplicates (of the ones imported months ago!) and did not re-import.
I checked the forum and found a similar thread at "http://forums.adobe.com/message/3287374#3287374", but it doesn't appear to provide any answers.  I've been backing up my catalog periodically, and the automatic checks have never reported any problems.
    Any ideas? -- JClarkW

Since you have the box <Don't import suspected duplicates> checked, the only reason why "duplicates" are imported is that they have different file names than the images already imported.
As you probably know, Lr cannot recognize the content of images. For Lr two images are identical when their file names are identical; and images are not identical when their file names are different.
The file name includes the extension that designates the file format, such as "jpg", "tif", "psd". So, two image files with the same name are not identical when the file format is different.
Also, as I have noticed Lr "sees" underscore "_" and hyphen "-" as different things, and thus treats two images files that differ only in underscore vs. hyphen as different files.
Some people have selected - in their OS - that the extensions for "known file types" are not shown ("Hide extensions for known file types"). If you have done this change it back so that the extensions are always shown.
In Windows this is done in >Control Panel >Appearance and Personalization >Folder Options >View tab.

  • Problem with importing images into time lapse

    Hi
I am having problems with importing still images into a time lapse sequence in photoshop and would appreciate any suggestions!
I want to create a time lapse using a sequence of still photographs.  All file names are sequentially name/numbered.
I am using the Motion workspace, and have followed all of the instructions available.
Create correct sized new document (film & video).
    Create video timeline.
    Set frame rate.
Choose 'create new video layer from file'.
Point to first image in the folder where the images are stored.
At this point, no matter what I have tried, I receive this error:
I have tried different sized new documents; tried jpegs and tiffs; tried different frame rates, tried different qualities and sizes of images; tried selecting the last image instead of the first (one recommendation).
If I use the 'Place' command from the file menu (and check the 'image sequence' box) instead of selecting 'Create new video layer' from the layers panel, it loads fine and I can still render the video.
It took me most of a day to discover this workaround, but every other reasonable 'how-to' that I can find says that I should be able to do it by opening files into a new video layer and it seems as though the new video layer option may give me more alternatives.
Anyone have any idea why I could be having these problems?
I have reset Photoshop, deleted the settings file, even reinstalled it.  I use 64-bit on windows 7 and even installed the 32-bit to try that, but all with the same result.
    Stuart

Unfortunately, yes--I've tried it that way over and over, and every other way I could think of.  The files are all in one folder, and I've converted the raw files to both tiffs and jpegs.  I even tried converting them to jpegs at the final pixel dimensions.  Each folder that I have used only contains one type of file, and they are all part of the same sequence and sequentially numbered.  I have even tried renumbering the files with numbers first, numbers last, numbers only, moving underscores.  I moved the files from my external hard-drive to the desktop ... I have a lot less hair than I had only a few days ago!
I've looked at a few other tutorials that outline the same sequence of steps, and tried them over and over, and then changing one step at a time to make sure that it was not a single step that caused the problem.
The thing that is really bugging me is that it works fine if I use the different approach of using the place command instead.
Anyway, thanks for all of your time.  It's going to be a lot simpler to just stick with 'place' command and I will likely do that, but I tend take things like this as a challenge.  I like to know WHY it won't work for me.  Sometimes it seems that there is just no logical explanation!
