Importing iMovie HD6

Some of the movies I made in iMovie HD6 import into iMovie 11 while others do not,  For those that do not, I get "no clips can be found" when I click on the iMovie HD6 icon. Those that do download nicely, preserving all the clips in the right order both a project and event, just the way it should.  I have a MacBook Pro, early 2011, runniing OSX 10.7.4.  What gives?

Hello marese:
Benvenuto alle discussioni!
Some analog to DV passthrough converters don't work in iMovie HD 6.0.1 like they do in iMovie 4.0.1

Does that help at all?

  • Help! I can't import iMovie HD project to iMovie 11

I have this project I was working on for hours in iMovie HD (v. 6.0.3), but I wasn't happy with the editing features so I decided to upgrade to iMovie 11. In iMovie 11 (v. 9.0.8), I followed the command of File > Import > iMovie HD Project. Then I selected the project I had been working on with "optimize video" checked and the "Save to" location being HDD.
Once I clicked "Import" I got the following with absolutely no progress bar and no video clips. I have also tried unchecking the "optimize video" box and with different old iMovie HD projects and I always get the same thing: a blank project with no video clips. I also checked for updates for both iMovie 11 and iMovie HD and restarted my computer.
    HELP!

    Hi
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one product in up-grade
iMovie'08 to 11 - a compleatly different program with no relation to iMovie 1 - HD6 what so ever.
iMovie'08 to 11 are in my opinion no gain at all over iMovie HD6 only a severe loss of functions.
BUT I USE - miniDV tape = interlaced SD-Video and for this iMovie HD6 is the best tool - if one doesn't go for FinalCut Express or Pro (not Pro-X) - as these are realy the best ever done - for my video works.
So I would stay in iMovie HD6 and complete the Movie - or -
Start all over in Video-editor of choice (the one You like)
There are no working transcioding tools to move project over from iMovie HD6 to ANY THING ELSE - Not iM'08-11 or FinalCut any version - transitions, texts and other editings will not travel over in an editable form if at all.

  • Importing iMovie HD projects into iMovie 11

Are projects made with iMovie HD compatible when imported into iMovie 11?
I have imported projects made with iMovie HD into the latest iMovie 11 and noticed soundtrack and transitions were missing. Is there anything I can do to import iMovie HD projects without missing anything (music, effects, etc) in iMovie 11? thanks

    Hi
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one Application evolving
iMovie'08 to 11 - Is a wrongly named new Application.
That's why one can't migrate projects over with full compatibility - same as to FinalCut - will not work 100% either.
And If You aim to make a DVD as result - then stay in iM HD6 as this will give absolutly best quality when exported to iDVD.
iMovie'08 - 11 discard every second line resulting in 50% of the sharpness.

  • What about Problem JVC Full HD Camcorder GZ-HD7E and iMovie HD6 ?

I want purchase Full HD Camcorder JVC GZ-HD7E .
What do you mean about "Problem - Not Problem" by use with
    iMovie HD6 ? (PPC G5, 10.4.9 and or iMac G5, 10.4.9)
    Thanks .

Most digital video is compressed to save space, generally using lossy video compression codecs. That means that when you go through a compress/uncompress cycle, you don't exactly get the same thing. How bad it is depends on the compression algorithm and the bitrate you choose. If the bitrate is high enough, the compression artifacts might be tolerable. MPEG-2 has a little bit of a bad rap because early MPEG-2 encoders weren't very good, and MPEG-2 can look bad if you choose a bitrate that is too low. Scenese with lots of movement, or low-light scenes with lots of video noise are particulary challenging to compress with good results.
Problems get worse when you have to re-compress, because then you apply a lossy algorithm on top of video material that already has artifacts. It's like making a copy of a copy with a not-so-perfect copy machine. So yes, there is some quality loss when you re-encode the MPEG-2 video for editing. But the loss at that point is minimal, because you are encoding to a very high quality codec. It doesn't make the video any better, but it doesn't make it any worse than it already is. The real quality loss occured earlier, when the video was recorded, and the initial MPEG-2 encoding was performed. Whatever detail was lost there, and whatever artifacts where introduced at that point, cannot be recovered later.
It all comes down to: what do you consider acceptable? Compare it to music. Yes, a CD is of much higher quality than a MP3 song. But most people can't tell the difference, and are just fine with MP3.
With HD, you don't really have a choice. The Canon HV20 - like all MiniDV based HD camcorders - uses MPEG-2 compression, too. It only shares the tape media and Firewire connection with SD MiniDV camcorders, not the DV compression algorithm. Importing from the HV20 into iMovie goes through the same re-encoding process. The AVCHD camcorders use MPEG-4 compression.

  • Imovie HD6.0.3 won't see my new Sony HDR-CX11E USB connected camcorder

Despite spending 4 hours now and wanting to shoot myself in the face. My brand new Sony HDR-CX11E is not being recognised by Imovie HD 6.0.3.
I have followed the instructions to the letter about a hundred times now. I'm using a Intel Core Duo imac, when I plug in the USB cable the memory stick is showing on the desktop, but when I open Imovie.... nothing, No Camera Attached. I have tried opening imovie with every available option tagged, DV, DV Wide, HDV 1080, HDV 720, Mpeg4 but every time it just fails to see the camcorder.
I read in one of my thousand searches on the subject that you first need to delete any Mpeg2 content from the camera, but I only bought it today and can't find any to delete, I even reformatted the stick to no avail.
    PLEASE help !!!!!

iMovie HD6 requires a miniDV camcorder to capture video via Firewire. It will not work with any other format of camcorder, like yours, that only has USB.
If you still want to stay with HD6, and who wouldn't, as it is still the best non pro editing platform there is, you should return that cam for a Sony miniDV model.
Otherwise, you will need to get iLife 09.

  • IMovie HD6 Ken Burns Effect Not working

Hi. I've been using iMovie HD6 with my old iMacG4. We used Ken Burns Effect a lot with no problems.
I just got a 1 year old G5 iMAC with Intel Dual Processor and it has the latest versions of Tiger and iMovie 06. Everything works but the Ken Burns Effect. When I use the Ken Burns effect, it shows up when I set it up but when I push the button to make iMovie render the effect, the clinic does not render. It looks like the computer is about to render the effect but nothing happens and I need to force quit iMovie to do anything else. On the set-up of the Ken Burns effect, the preview shows the Ken Burns effect working.
I had a previous version of iLife O6 so I tried deleting the iMovie from the application and reloading the iLife 06 but this did not help. Because I don't have iLife 08, I cannot download a version of iMovie O6 to give this a try.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help, Andy

Since you just got a one year old computer, I would do the following:
    1. Close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch.
    2. Before you relaunch iMovie, do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
    3. Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently -- 25GB is recommended.
    4. Update iMovie and Quicktime to current versions, and do a permissions repair afterwards.
    5. If you have any 3rd party plug-ins, or Quicktime plug-ins, move them to another folder to temporarily disable them.
With the Ken Burns effect, do not empty the trash until your project is finished. Emptying the trash will cause you to be unable to edit a photo to which the Ken Burns effect has been applied.
    Hope the above helps.

  • Import iMOVIE with sound? Export Final Cut Project to Pro Tools?

I am considering the 30 day free trial for Final Cut Pro X. I have a new Macbook Lion laptop.
I made a short film in iMOVIE 09 on my new laptop. I am getting it professionally scored next week. Can I seamlessly transfer iMOVIE project into Final Cut Pro X so that it keeps all my audio tracks? For example, I have natural background sound on many video clips. I have also added "monster" sound effects all over the place. I have voiceover here and there as well. So I am wondering if I import iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X are all the sounds merged (I don't want this) or does the project appear in Final Cut Pro X just like it does in my iMOVIE (video clip with a few audio clips under it)?
Second question - The audio post company would need to export the project from Final Cut Pro X to a software program called Pro Tools. There are a whole bunch of "preferences" needed to be checked off to make sure they get project the way it should be. However, my question is does anyone know if Final Cut Pro X is compatible with Pro Tools Software?
FYI - if I don't do the above I was told I need to make 8-9 copies of DVD of movie in iMOVIE. One would be video with natural sound when I filmed and all other sound turned off. Another DVD would be just voiceover sound and all other sound turned off etc... The audio post company needs each sound isolated so they can manipulate audio levels etc. This sounds like pain in butt which is why I am attempting to see if I can do the above.
    Thanks, Todd

Thank you all for help. Spoke to engineer at audio post company. I told him it sounds like that I can export iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X and keep audio tracks. However, I cannot export Final Cut Pro X project to Pro Tools. Hence, no point in moving iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X.
The engineer told me to make Quicktime files of the 4 minute movie with each different audio track. He said as long as the track does not overlap I can have multiple sounds... for example, if my voiceover occurs from 0 sec. to 30 sec and that is only sound then I can keep in a monster sound that occurs from 1 minute to 1 minute 30 sec. etc.
I did forget to ask him one question. One filmmaker noticed that I had stereo monster sounds and mono monster sounds. I would think most people would not notice difference but the filmmaker did. Not sure if this company can fix something like that?
Thanks again for all your help. The thing that is weird about all of this is if I buy the latest and greatest Final Cut Pro X and make my next project from scratch with it I still won;t be able to export using Pro Tools... Sounds like Pro Tools only works with Final Cut.

  • Importing iMovie Events/Projects to FCP X?

Hi I am a complete newbie to the MAC forums. Apologies in advance for the long winded post!
    Past:
I have been a Windows / Video Studio user for many years. (Win 7, Q6600 cpu, 8gb RAM)
I principally make DVD's of slideshows, interspersed with video and with a music background for myself, businesses and friends.
I'm not a "Pro" by any stretch of the imagination but I've been successfully making reasonable quality output.
    Now
I've moved to the Mac and as my profile shows I've bought a reasonable machine - iMac 27", 16gb RAM, i7 3.4gHz cpu, AMD Radeon HD 6970M (2GB) and 1TB main drive and 3TB external drives.
I have iMovie '11 and (after reading extensive reviews) just purchased FCP X to see if I can -
Utilize the 64bit the iMac is capable of; and
give myself more flexibility for creativity (VS X3 had heaps of themes, transitions, titling etc)
    Questions
I expected FCP X to import the iMovie Events and Projects hassle free (most bad reviews referred to comparisons with FCP 7 etc.) However when I import the projects -
The iMovie MAPS feature is not supported (this is a real hassle as this was a recent welcome introduction from iMovie '09 on). Apple support suggested I export the whole project to a QT movie then import into FCP X but as I told them I bought FCP X to speed up the process, not to process a 32bit app then import to a 64bit app to do my final output. (Since then my research suggests there is a workaround to the MAPS problem if I just create the Maps in iMove and export to QT and import to FCP X - Why would Apple not just continue this feature in FCP X?
All of my photos appear full screen in iMovie, however when I import to FCP X  some of the photos are significantly smaller i.e. appear in a black frame. Is this a media problem or is FCP X not capable of importing the project in it's iMovie form?
All text frames (as intros to particular groups of photos) lose their formatting and the text is cropped and unreadable.
All this from a product that is purported to "import iMovie Events and Projects". The imported mess I have suggests I'm better off starting from scratch but this means the "import iMovie events" is useless?
Lastly, the plethora of options for output leaves me baffled to say the least. It is not helped because i am not a Pro but even iMovie is difficult to easily produce a high quality DVD for playback on a big screen TV. I try various options, SHARE>Media Browser>LARGE, or 1080p (produces 108 error in iMovie) Then import into iDVD to produce DVD menu and output to Image file prior to burning on SL or DL media. What is the best workflow to produce the best DVD output on a HD TV?
Thanks in advance for any help as time to complete some projects is against me.
    George

    Thanks Tom.
Do I understand correctly that to produce 90 minutes of high quality I need a Blu-ray burner? I follow that DL discs can only produce HD up to 40 minutes and to go beyond that I need a Blu-ray burner and disc.
On advice from Apple Support, I provided feedback for a feature request when I first struck the problem. I'll research the forums more to seek out answers to my questions. I'll have to find the "spatial conform" section. In the meantime I'll finish these projects as best I can in iMovie and then start my learning curve with FCP X as I am probably biting off more than I can chew at the moment.
Patrick and Tom, I appreciate you taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge.
    With thanks,
    George (in Tasmania Australia)

  • How can I import iMovie HD 6 project files into Final Cut Express HD3?

Trying to import iMovie HD 6 projects into FCE HD 3 but 2 windows appear:
    Importing XML data
    and below it a
    SAVE window
If I click SAVE, both windows disappear, a file with nothing in it appears in browser and when try to play it in the viewer, there is just black....
Is this all because FCE HD 3 won't support iMove HD 6? so I will need to upgrade to FCE HD 4?

    Use File>Import>Files.
iMovie Projects as a whole do not Import correctly whereas individual clips do but will need the audio rendering to play correctly.

  • Import iMovie Project containing map animations

How can i import my iMovie projects without losing map animations? Is there an addon, plugin or something like that?

The point was that Apple stated on the FCP X site that you can import imovie to FCP X.
I have old projects (created when map animation was cool) that I would like to migrate off iMovie to FCP X.

  • Trouble opening iMovie HD6 projects on iMovie 08.

    Hi there,
I have just bought a new iMac, with iMovie 08. I have all my prior projects, created in iMovie HD6 stored on a LaCie external drive. The projects read and open on my laptop (running iMovie 06), but show blank files when plugged into the new iMac. How do I get them to open on both?

iMovie 08 cannot 'read' all of iMovie HD6's transitions/effects and will show blank files if you try to open version 6 movies with iMovie 08. You can download a free version of iMovie 6... version 6.0.4. This is the same as version 6.0.3, but it is only available to those of us who purchased new Macs that have iLife 08 preinstalled. The reason for this is for exactly what you are finding. You still need iMovie 6 to open your older projects and probably for creating new ones. Both versions of iMovie can coexist on the same computer......
Just tried looking for 6.0.4 and cannot find it...Maybe it is in the iLife updater released today. Will check and let you know.

  • Final Cut Pro X crashes when I try to import iMovie project?

I have a large iMovie project that I am trying to import into FCP. Every time I do (FILE -> IMPORT -> IMOVIE PROJECT) it starts to import, then crashes without warning, giving me a crash log report.
I am able to import another smaller iMovie project just fine, but the one I actually need to import doesn't work.
Both projects use video clips from the same event library.
Any ideas? Or in a backwards way, any ideas on how to recreate it in a fresh iMovie project to import into FCP? (I've tried duplicating it in iMovie and it crashed on import too).
(...I understand why there have been so many complaints about FCP now.)

Figured it out! After almost 24 hours, I cracked it
Let me give you a bit of back story...
I had an iMovie project that I had built on my Macbook. I just got a new iMac and installed FCPX on it. Was hoping to do some more professional alterations to the project.
So I consolidated the project in iMovie, copied it along with the files to an external hard drive, then transferred it over to my new machine.
Every time that I would try to import the newly copied project, it would get a few seconds in, then crash with no error message... just a crash report.
I was able to import a smaller project that used some of the same videos, so I knew that it wasn't a codec issue or something like that.
Then, through the process of trial and error, I figured out that when I had consolidated the project on my old machine, it didn't truly consolidate the files that I had used. There were a handful of still images that I had used in a different folder on my computer. So I copied that folder to the same path on my new computer, tried to import, and just like that, problem solved.
I guess FCPX doesn't know what to do when something isn't exactly where it's supposed to be. Hopefully in the next software update, they'll alert the user what the error causing it to crash is so that others don't have to waste nearly a day troubleshooting for one obvious (oops) mistake.

  • Importing iMovie events - wrong dates

I am new to FCPX.  I imported my iMovie event library (File/Import/iMovie Event Library).  Worked fine, but the date is wrong: FCPX shows and uses for file organisation the date of the file import, not the dates of the file creation/image capture.
This way, for archiving/editing, having iMovie events in FCPX is useless.  I have 1.4 TB of iMovie footage hanging there under one date (today).
Is there a configuration I missed?  Many thanks.

I have had good luck importing my iMovie event library.
The first time I tried it, FCPX appeared to hang, so I force quit.
The second time, I decided to let FCPX finish and let it run overnight.
The result was that the dates were preserved. After poking around a bit, I found that FCP did not duplicate the event clips. Rather, it made a hard link so that the same clip is used in both iMovie and FCPX.  But FCPX has to generate its own thumbnails and analysis files and this takes time. It also took time for the hard links to be put in place.
I did not have to do anything special, except wait for it to finish.
I have about 5TB available to both apps.
Also, I was on 10.0.3 when I did this so I haven't tried it on 10.0.7.
I should also add that most of my dates were set by the camera, or by me outside the program. If you have added dates using iMovies date and time feature, I do not think those are preserved.
When I imported old VHS tapes (for example) to iMovie, I would name them as clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext where hh is hours in 24 hour time and ext is the current extension (e.g. .dv or .mov). FCP reads these dates, as does iMovie.

  • Import imovie into Garage for Soundtrack -severe audio problems

Imported imovie 4 minutes long into Soundtrack and the audio is delayed, scratchy, offensive and unlistenable. I add a drum track and that suffers the same fate. I got the movie to play fine by going into prefernces as that was moving in "chunks" instead of a smooth flow. Any thoughts?

I hardly ever use iMovie so I am not sure about the "Share" function there but using Avid Express, or Lionheads "The Movies" I end up with a Hd movie.
This I suppose is too large to use in GB so I compress it at a lower resolution and a smaller size. This is the movie I use in GB. The resulting soundtrack is exported to iTunes, no help for that, and then with Quicktime Pro, I remove the sound from the original HD movie and add the new mix.
