Importing in Lightroom 3 is painstakingly slow

I am using iMac 3.06 Ghz Inel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB Ram. Suddenly importing Raw files in Lightroom 3 seems incredibly slow. Have preset import to embedded and sidecar. I did not seem to have this issue previously but for some reason now I do. I have my photos stored on NAS Thecus N5500.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
regards,
LS

Quote "Have preset import to embedded and sidecar".
What exactly do you mean by this. Are you converting to dng and embedding the raw file? Are you creating high resolution sidecars? All this to the network drive? What is the connection wireless? USB 2.0 or other?
What were you doing previously that it was so much faster?

  • Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos

Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos from a memory card connected to a reader using USB 3.0! After installing LR5, I didn't change any default settings. Interestingly, this wasn't found in beta testing. LR4 was what I call quick or snappy. Because of LR5's slow performance, I went back to LR4 after paying for the Cloud subscription.
With substantial difficulty and after some time passed, I eventually was able to speak to Support which offered no fix for this issue. I hope that it can be resolved soon.

Selecting the Import from below in Files does help speed up the start of the Import as mentioned in the thread you referred to but is still maybe three or so times slower than in LR4. At least it makes using LR5 more bearable.
    Thanks.

  • I can not import in Lightroom 4.4 any RAW-file from my D600. Lightroom gives no picture.

I can not import in Lightroom 4.4 any RAW-file from my D600.  Lightroom gives no picture.

    How long have you waited?
When I connect my D600 via USB and import in Lr it takes a long time before the image thumbnails are displayed in the Import Dialog.
I know that using a card reader would probably be much faster (you gotta try that!).
In the meantime I just do something else for 5-7 min (read e-mail, get a cup of coffee) and thereafter the thumbnails are displayed and import is straightforward.
And I do have a powerful and fast system.
So, somehow Lr and the D600 are slow to begin "talking" to each other.

  • Why is importing raw as dng so very slow? 3 min a frame

I have a canon 5d mark II, 4Gb compactflash card ultra II en extreme III
Importing them by usb 2,0 reader to lightroom 2.6 on apple G5, 2,3 Ghz,  2,5 Gb DDR2 SDRAM. At the same time converting them to DNG and making a back-up to a other computer in the network.
    Importing time about 3 minutes a frame, so for about 150 pivtures on a 4 GB card 150 x 3 min = 450 min = 7 1/2 hour.
Is this normal ?? Or what do I wrong?

Do not believe you are doing any thing wrong. Several things could cause the slow process you are experiencing. I think the copy to another computer on a network is the main contributor.
My preferred method would be to copy from the CF card direct to a folder on your HDD using a card reader (not directly from the camera). Then import into lightroom, converting to dng. Last do the back up of the dng files to the network computer using your OS tools.

  • Re Importing into Lightroom 4.1

My photographic equipment consists of a Nikon D 7000 ( set to RAW) and a P 5000 (JPEG). My computer is an iMac with Lightroom 4.1 installed. Up until recently it has been possible to import from the SD cards directly into Lightroom via the reader in the side of the Mac. As of late the program will let me see the previews but when I attempt to import the images a message pops up that the files cannot be read! I can import them into 'iPhoto' but this is not where I want them! Can any one please suggest what has caused this new problem? I eagerly await any suggestions. With Thanks.

Dear tlsteinb. Thanks for your reply. I tried the ejection of the external drive as you suggested. To no avail! It is still a mystery to me. I do not know if i have to change a setting on the camera, the computer, or the program! I tried to send a 'chat' message to Adobe directly. How successful that will be we will wait and see! I shall keep you posted. Regards, Rae Dall

Just this morning I've begun experiencing the same thing. I can get the photos off the card and onto the iMac desktop for instance, but they won't import into Lightroom 4 from either the card reader or the desktop. So my assumption is that my card reader is working fine, but Lightroom is not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Help with large import to Lightroom

I have about 15000 images in 100's of folders to import into Lightroom; tech assistance tells me I must import each folder one at a time; please tell me there is a faster way for such a large import.  Thanks in advance, Mirlie

I beg your pardon.  You are absolutely right (as, I am sure you had no doubt).  I was clicking choose instead of import all photos in selected folders; as a matter of fact until I just read you response I had not ever seen the option of "import all photos in selected folders".  Again so sorry to have indicated your solution was wrong.  It amazes me that I have spent hours on the phone with Adobe LR tech support and they continued to read from their scripts that I needed to import each folder individually.  You have saved me many hours and stiff shoulder muscles.  I now know where to come for help.  Have a great evening.  Thanks so much.

  • Why aren't my images importing in Lightroom 5.4?

I have an sd card with image files and two small videos that I am trying to import into Lightroom 5.4. The dialog indicates it is importing but the status never changes and nothing gets imported. I have no problem copying to my computer in Windows Explorer. I imported ok in the past when there were no videos on the card. What is the problem???

    Is there an error message?
If not, you might want to try Lightroom 5.3 instead, that version doesn't seem to have importing problems.

  • No camera profiles in development module for Panasonic GH4 rw2 files, imported in Lightroom 5.6.

No camera profiles in development module for Panasonic GH4 rw2 files, imported in Lightroom 5.6.
Only the "Adobe Standard" is shown. In metadata I can see that the camera and lense were recognized correctly. What could be the reason?

The sample GH4 raw file I found on PhotographyBlog does have a lens profile that the Adobe applies automatically without having lens profiles being enabled.  This is indicated in Photoshop CC / ACR 8.x so perhaps LR 6 will give us the same indication:
By comparison, here is what the uncorrected raw file looks like in a raw converter that doesn't do lens corrections:

  • Import from Lightroom to Aperture 2.0?

Would like to give Aperture a second chance, but I have already built up my lightroom library. Is there a clean way to do this?

Has any additional progress been made on migrating from Lightroom to Aperture without losing develop settings and metadata?
I tried the Aperture 2.0 demo and really wanted to switch. Lightroom gets absolutely bog-slow once you start accumulating "professional" quantities of photos in your library (I'm managing about 25,000 DNG images) and not only is it slow on its own, it takes a death-grip on anything else running on your Mac as well. Aperture 2.0 was unchained lightning by comparison. And the new plug-in architecture and brush-on dodge/burn effects in 2.1 are deal-sealers for me.
Problem is, I've invested hundreds of hours in cropping and exposure adjustments of my images in Lightroom, and I can't face walking away from all that work and then having to re-do it, even with a superior tool.
Since both of these applications are nondestructive editing tools, all that crop and exposure setting data is just data in databases... I can't believe there's NO way to export that data out of LIghtroom's database format and convert it into Aperture's database format! Surely there's a third-party opportunity here -- I'd certainly be glad to pay for a Lightroom-to-Aperture converter that really worked, and I'll bet a lot of other people would as well.

where is the "eject card after import" in lightroom 4.1?
'Devices', which is  under 'Sources' (for import)  has dissapeared, and only 'files'shows, The 'eject after import'  phrase and it'scheckbox has vanished.

The Eject checkbox is available when the device is selected from the 'From' drop down menu. See below screenshot

Lightroom does reliably write capture time to industry-standard metadata fields in photos.   If you are indeed using the File > Import command a second time to re-import the photos after first importing them into LR, what's likely happening is that you're not telling LR to write the metadata changes back to the photos.  There are two ways to do this:  1) Select all the photos and do Metadata > Save Metadata To File, or 2) Select the option Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
If this does not fix the issue, then you'll need to provide more detail about the precise steps you're taking, with command names and options.
direct Lightroom to change each photo file name to match its new capture date
Stepping back, re-importing the photos back into LR isn't necessary to rename photos with their capture date -- use the Library > Rename Photos command.

  • Importer dans Lightroom 4.4 des images Raw CR2 du Canon EOS 70D?

Bonjour, comment puis je importer dans Lightroom 4.4 des images Raw CR2 prises avec mon Canon EOS 70D?

  • PSD files created using export data set fail to import into lightroom

If I create a set of files using variables in a data set, the PSD files won't import into LightRoom. LR says to resave with maximum compatibility, but I already have that set in Photoshop. If I open one of the files and resave it, it will import. Perhaps PS isn't honoring the maximize compatibility setting when exporting.

    Hi,
I downloaded 10g database ver 10.2.0.1.0 from oracle site and installed it on my laptop. I took an export of schema which was on my 9i database ver 9.2.0.1.0 using 9i exp, created tablespace and user in the 10gdb and tried to import the same to 10gdb using 10g imp using the following.
    imp system/pswd@10gdb fromuser=test touser=test file=expdat.dmp log=expdat.log
    it displays
    .importing SYSTEM'S objects into SYSTEM
    .importing TEST'S objects into TEST
and it doesnt import any objects just hangs. The Log file does'nt have any entries.
    Can anyone help me.
    Thanks in advance

  • Images won't import from Lightroom. (I have Creative Cloud 1.7.1.418/Photoshop (2014)/Lightroom 5.6)

Images won't import from Lightroom to be edited. There were no problems until I upgraded to Photoshop (2014). LR & Photoshop work well independently (I have Creative Cloud 1.7.1.418/Photoshop (2014)/Lightroom 5.6). All are up-to-date.

I had the same problem.  It seems the scripts that control the transfer of images from LR to Photoshop got deleted or messed up.  The fix I found on the LR forum was as follows:
This solution allows you to run a repair installation without uninstalling Photoshop CC 2014. If you've already uninstalled Photoshop CC 2014, install it from the Apps tab of the Creative Cloud desktop application.
Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
    Select the Apps tab.
Scroll down (if necessary) until the Find New Apps section displays.
On the same line as Find New Apps, select Filters & Versions > Previous Version.
Click the Install button next to Photoshop and select CC 2014.
    Click Yes, install this version.
Once I did this, the interaction between LR and PS CC 2014 started working again.  I did notice that Photoshop showed up as needing to be updated in the Adobe CC application so I just clicked on the update button and after a few minutes photoshop had been updated.  The importing function still works so I think everything is OK.
Not sure if this was part of the problem, but after updating the PS CC 2014 application  the first time, I uninstalled the original PS CC application as I didn't need it anymore.  I'm thinking that may have caused the scripts to be uninstalled along with the PS CC application.  Rerunning the installation put things back to normal.
    Hope this helps.
    Brian
