Importing iPhone photos directly to external HD - filling up Start-up disk

I'm stumped - I've moved my iPhoto library to my external drive (Time Capsule) cause my start-up drive on the laptop is almost full. No problems there - when I open iPhoto all my pics load, everything is cool.
However, when I'm trying to upload new photos or videos from my iPhone to iPhoto, it's filling up my start-up disk - I can literally see the 'available space' on my internal HD go down as it's uploading the new photos. Why is this? Where are these photos being copied locally that it's taking up space? Shouldn't it just be going directly to the external HD?
I've searched my internal HD looking for a duplicate iPhoto library or even duplicate photos, but can't find anything.
What am I missing?!?

1 - you can not colocate the Time Machine backup and your iPhoto library (or any other dynamic file)on the same volume because TM will continue to grow the backup until it fills the volume and your dynamic file will not work any longer
2 - to move the iPhoto library to an external drive it must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto and point to the new location - fully test it and then you can delete the old iPhoto library - I suggest testing one more time before emptying the trash

  • I imported my photos from an external hard drive into Lightroom, edited my photos but what next...?!

    Adobe,
I imported my photos from an external hard drive into Lightroom, edited my photos and when i decided to export them the originals had not been updated and the deleted photos had not been deleted. How do i set it up so that once i import the photos, edit them and export they are then placed back in their original folder edited and updated?
I have managed to export the photos to another file but these were exported with an Adobe.xmp file. What is this and is this necessary?
    Thanks for your help!

It's important to realise that LR is a DAM (Digital Asset Management) application - no images are actually imported into LR only links to where they are. Secondly, the details of any edits that you make to your images are kept only in the database and/or xmp files depending how you set this up in Preferences. In the general workflow e.g. edit in Lightroom, further edit in Photoshop and returning to LR then creating xmp files aren't really necessary. So just to emphasise - edits are stored in the LR's database, the original RAW images themselves don't change (non destructive editing). You can prove this yourself by desaturating an image (turning it into a B+W) and then look at the original images in Explorer - you'll see it's still being shown in colour.
Exporting an image is something different. By implication, you've finished with the image and perhaps want to save an image for posting on the web somewhere. Now assuming your not using any additonal and freely available LR export plug-ins, one way would be to Export a jpeg image to a folder on the desktop and this is allowed for in the Export dialogue. At this time LR reads any edits from it's database and applies those to the exported jpeg (or tiff) file it's going to send to the folder on the desktop.
As mentioned earlier, any edits and keywords etc are stored in LR's database - original RAW files remain untouched. XMP files also store the edits if LR is set up to create xmp files (in Preferences) but these are not really necessary unless you are going to be editing an already edited RAW file in another application. As an example - you import into LR's library a scanned negative. Now because strictly speaking LR isn't designed to work with negative images, you now open this file via Bridge into ACR and from here reverse the negative into a positive image. All fine and good except when you go back into LR what's shown is still a negative so what is needed is to update the metadata (LR > Metadata > Read Metadata from file) which will force LR to read the newly created metadata from the xmp file that Bridge generated. As already suggested, if you're happy editing your RAW files in LR and only LR then xmp files aren't really necessary - all the data being saved in LR's database.
Hope this has been of some help but if I might also suggest, purchasing a good book on LR from the outset thus getting to really know LR will pay dividends further on down the line.

  • Iphoto isn't importing iphone photos

When I try to close IPhoto it says : Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for import to complete.  This happens when I am not trying to import any photos.  Then when I have my IPhone connected it will not allow me to select either import selected, or import all (buttons are greyed out).  Help please

If your iPhone is plugged into the computer - unplug it. Press and hold the power button. After the computer turns off release the button. Then press and release the power button (as normal) to turn the computer on.

  • From Photos for Mac, how does one delete imported iphone photo?

IPhoto had this feature where when after it has imported all of my iPhone photos, it would ask me if I want to delete the imported photos from my iPhone.  Also, it has a button to delete all photos from my iPhone if I choose to.  Does anyone know if this very nice feature is still available in the new Photos for Mac?
I really like this feature to clear all of my photos with one click, instead of having go thru one by one.

  • Downloading photos directly to external hard drive.

I was wondering: Is there any way of downloading photos from camera using iPhoto directly to external hard drive, similar to the way you can do it with iMovie files.

Mount the camera ot the desktop and drag the photos to disk - or use image capture (in your applications folder) - in the Image Capture preferences (or the iPhoto preferences) you can select the action to be taken when a comera is connected

Although I've imported my iPhoto library into Photos from an external hard drive, I cannot access them unless the external hard drive is connected to my laptop. I thought Photos was supposed to save what I import into the Photos Library on my laptop hard drive. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
How much space did this Hard Drive have when new ?
How much stuff is on there now ?
(Finder > View Menu > Show View Options and select Calculate all sizes)
A restart of the computer is likely to free up temporary files that may be in use (graphic Apps Undo space and the like).

  • Can I undo an errant import of photos from an external hard drive?, Can I undo an errant import of photos from an external hard drive?

I'm desperate.  I recently purchased a new iMac to store our 50,000 plus photos, many large files from our DSLR camera.  I previously stored them on a Maxtor hard drive linked to a very early MacBook Pro, purchased in Jan. 2006.  Photo organization and storage was a persistent headache on that machine, so I hoped that housing the photos locally would help.  It didn't.  I imported the entire external hard drive library after creating a new local library to house them on the iMac and they are completly disorganized.  Prior unedited photos have reemerged.  Chronology is lost.  I basically have 50K photos and no organization at all.  Short of returning the iMac is there a way out of this mess?

Hard to say since you really give no details
It sounds like you may have had an iPhoto library on your external drive and imported that into your new iPhoto  --  NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work
If this is what you did drag the bad iPhoto library to the desktop until you finish fixing things, connect the external drive and drag the iphoto library to the pictures folder of the new Mac and launch iPhoto - it will convert the library as needed and you will be in business - once you are sure everything is ok drag the bac library on the desktop to the trash and empty the trash

  • Unable to import iPhone photos to iPhoto

    Hi everyone.
Im on iPhoto 7.1.5, when I plug my iPhone into the computer and then open iPhoto, there is no option to import photos, I have in the past imported photos from the iPhone into iPhoto, but now for some reason it wont give me an option to import, any ideas what the cause could be?
    Im on OSX 10.6.3

    Hello Thomas,
This could be a behavior mentioned on the Apple website. Try http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3195.
    Hope that helps.

  • IPhoto looses imported iPhone photos

So I've looked around the board for similar issues, but nothing seems to fit exactly with my issue (or offer a resolution), so here goes...
Recently, whenever I try to import photos from my iPhone to iPhoto, an issue arrises in which the actual photo is missing (a large exclamation point takes its place). The thumbnail for the event/photo is present, and when I "Get Info" the picture, it even shows the correct name and GPS location. However, for the life of me, I can't seem to find the original photo. I have tried looking around in the iPhoto Library, but no folders or files exist. Any suggestions?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto stopped importing iPhone photos automatically, how to i change this?

so whenever i connected my iphone to my imac the photos i had would back up onto iphoto immediately but now they dont do it at all. How to i fix this? Could it have something to do with icloud?

Your situation really is confusing. Try moving the Originals folder you moved out of the Rescue folder back into the rescue folder. Then move the Rescue folder back into the pictures folder. The Rescue folder should now be as it was earlier. Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, locate and select the Rescue folder. If it open OK and you have your library as it was before we started you can move the other library to the desktop. Then take the Originals folder out of that library folder and import into your Rescue library. That was you'll have all of the pictures in the library. But before you do, make a temp copy of the Rescue folder (select and type Command-D) just in case.

  • Keyword tags for imported iPhone photos disappeared from LR5.7 catalog under OS 10.10.1Yosemite.

I am using LR 5.7 on a Mac OS 10.10.1 with a Time Machine backup - the vast majority of my photos were taken on an iPhone 5 in the year 2014 and are in a folder on my computer internal hard drive.
The structure is my Folders > Macintosh HD which has a folder inside called
Pictures Users/myname with 1719 photos in it -
when I click on this folder the following folders open up:
    > folder dated 1904(?) with 2 items
    > folder dated 2012 with 1 item
    > folder dated 2013 with 1 item
    > folder dated 2014 with 1352 items...
    .... and so on until
    >Exported Original Photos 365 (which are exports of photos from iPhoto that I wanted to catalog and develop in LR)
The Maths are correct. But as for the tags:
when I open the folder Pictures Users/myname containing 1719 photos and view them as thumbnails I see all the keywording applied to my collection of photos
BUT when I open the folder Pictures - Users/myname and then folder 2014, I see a list:
    folder 2014 with 199 items
    folder 2014-01-20 with 1 item
    folder 2014-01-21 with 5 items
    etc
    All well and good.
BUT if I open these dated folders with small numbers of images in them (never more than 50 per day), view the images in a grid and click on a photo, there are no keyboard tags to be seen in the information panel. They only time I see any keyword tags that I have entered is when I open Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname which contains my entire library of photos taken in 2014 and those added to the catalog from iPhoto.
Should I see tags for the photos in the individually dated folders e.g. Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname > 2014 > 2014-01-20 and so on day by day ?
I have been tagging my photos with keywords after my weekly import. And have been doing this after viewing each photo from the grid view of photos displayed by clicking on  Macintosh HD >Pictures - Users/myname.
    Have I made an error?
I want to tag my collection of photos by the correct method before it grows in size.
    Many thanks
    David (Brighton, UK)

    Hi,
I moused down on the "+" sign where it says Folders and "show photos in subfolders" was shown as already being "on".
I followed your suggestion:  I tried to keyword the photo in Macintosh HD/Pictures - Users/myname/folder 2014-01-20 with 1 item however it did not permit me to type in a keyword in the keyboarding section panel on the left hand side, so I was unable to check if it stuck.
I don't know whether this is important or not, but the list of folders, subfolders etc have slightly different arrow heads:
If I drop down the Macintosh HD location there is a SOLID, grey downward pointing arrow to the left hand side of the folder Pictures - Users/myname/..
However, if you drop down folders from Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname/.. to show inner folders:
Macintosh HD> Pictures - Users/myname/... > folders dated 2014-01-20 etc., then there is a horizontal triangle that is made up of grey dots rather than a solid triangle for every dated folder - is this as expected?
