Importing iPhoto backup - so slow!

I am importing photo from DVD and CD, since I had my hard disk replaced. I cannot believe how slow this is! Given that the files should not need to be changed, I would expect that the DVD read speed would be the limiting factor, possibly 10Mbyte/sec, so to import a typical 87Mbyte folder should take seconds rather than half an hour. Is 10 minutes reasonable for 9 images 2.2Mbyte? Average 2Mbyte per minute?
Since I have a couple od DVDs left, this is going to take many days.

Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Rod,
I had a similar problem. My combo drive reads commercially pressed DVDs with no problem. But a home-burned DVD (made on a Mac) of photos from a relative would cause my Mac to hang for many minutes at a time, each time it tried to generate a preview in the Finder. I thought I'd never be able to read that disc.
After I got my external DVD burner, I tried reading that DVD. It worked perfectly, no more slowly than reading a folder on my hard drive. I don't know why my Mini's drive doesn't like that DVD, but I don't worry about it now since the external has no trouble.

  • IMovie 08 hangs while trying to import iPhoto movies at the start.

    Hi guys,
When I open Imovie 08, it asks me to import iphoto movies. Then it stays there for ages and never ends importing those movies. I know I can just skip this process but I want to edit those videos from iPhoto.
I guess is some corrupted file it is trying to import what is causing this incident but I have no idea how to tell which is the "bad" file since iMovie doesn't give any information about it.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advence

    Hi,
I wouldn't say I have such a lot of movies in Iphoto but deffintely they are quite a few... anyway, I suspect it will never end because the timer gets bigger and bigger; and yes I left it running overnight with no luck.
Is there any way to see in which video is iMovie having the problem? The other workarround means having to backup and delete videos randomly until I find "the bad one".
    Cheers.

  • Import ABAP running very slow

guys, I am installing IDES EHP4 on a solaris box with oracle 10g. The import is running very slow. in 20 hours, it has only imported 10 out of 105 jobs. Top comand shows i have 26 GB free physical memory (out of 48GB total) and also 123 GB free swap out of 150 GB total. CPU load is also only 3 %. I have already configured the project file acording to sap recommedation. MY oracle init file configuration looks like this. Also, you will see my project and user_attr files below. Please advise what i can change tomake things go faster.

How have you tried to do that?
You don't have to import iPhoto to Photos, you have to open she iPhoto Libray in Photos.
Either drag the iPhoto Library (not the application) onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
Or launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key to select your iPhoto Library for migration.
Where i your iPhoto library stored? On an external drive or your system drive?

  • IPhoto 7 importing iPhoto 6 data: way too many images

In iPhoto 7 (aka iPhoto '08) on 10.4.10 MBP, I mounted a hard drive with data from another Mac (using iPhoto 6, 10.3.9); this library has about 32,000 items. On import, iPhoto 7 sees 47,000+ images! The pics it's importing look like deleted and un-rotated ones - aargh! (:-( Please tell me it's not importing deleted, recovered and otherwise unwanted or duplicate images.

    mactester:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As TD pointed out if you imported the V6 library either via the menu or by dragging the library into the open iPhoto 7 window you'll get every image file in the library.
iPhoto Library Manager will copy the rolls or albums from one to another library and keep the metadata intact. HOWEVER, both libraries must be at the save version. So you'll need to upgrade that other library by opening it with iPhoto 7 and doing the converting. Then iPLM can copy the photos to the primary library like this.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Stop 08 from asking to import iPhoto clips

ok, I am one complaining continously about 08, though I do find it useful for an occasional quicky... when I do not have the mood or time for editing...
My question: Since 08 corrupted my iPhoto file, which I then rebuilt from a backup, I do NOT want it to import clips stored there. Anybody know, where I can turn off the dialog permanently, asking me at each startup about importing iPhoto clips?
    Dirk

If I may present a temporary solution. Go to iPhoto and create a SmartFolder titled "iMovie". Now let iMovie have its little way and import all of the photos you will never use in a movie. Now go to your photos button, pull up the view bar until all you see is a pulldown menu. From this menu, choose the "iMovie" folder you created. When you DO come across a photo you would like to use, say for a background. Then add a search comment like "iMovie" and let the SmartFolder find it for use in iMovie.
This does not answer your question, but I thought it might help.

  • Iphoto began running slow right after the last update. I'm working with raw files. when I have an open moving from photo to photo some times it slows way down, Never did prior to last update. Thanks

iphoto is running slow at times. This never happened until I installed the the last update. The program gets slow when I have an event open moving with the arrows back and forth.  It doesn't make a difference in full screen or smaller

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import a number of raw image files and test to see if the same problem persists.

  • Imported iPhoto Pictures Disappeared

    Hello Fellow Mac Users!
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5 and it has all recent updates. I plugged in my Nikon D5100 and imported photos to iPhoto '11. I split and named the events. I imported all of the photos (and unfortunately clicked "Delete Photos from Camera After Import"). All of the photos disappeared from iPhoto (some are in photo stream), I cannot open photo stream from iPhoto on my MacBook (I can open it from my iPhone), and now some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library) and some are misnamed with the event names from the import.
I have read and write permissions for iPhoto (I am the admin).
I tried restarting the program and computer. There aren't any updates that I am missing. Also, I held down command and alt while launching iPhoto, but no additional dialogue boxes were opened.
    Please help.
    Thank you!

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and the reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Your post goes aroung the field a lot and I am not really clear on what is working and what is not
    Imported iPhoto Pictures Disappeared
All of the photos disappeared from iPhoto (some are in photo stream)
I cannot open photo stream from iPhoto on my MacBook (I can open it from my iPhone)
now some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library)
Also, I held down command and alt while launching iPhoto, but no additional dialogue boxes were opened.
Typically this is because you do not hold the Alt & COmmand keys long enough
You appearently have a MacBook (10.6) and a MacBook Pro (10.7.5)
Did you import the photos to the MS or the MBP? You talk about trying to open PS on the MB with 10.6 - PS requires 10.7.5 or newer - Please explain - do your photos show in PS on the MBP?
what does " some events don't have any photos when opened (although they show having photos from the events library)" mean?
Please try to provide a more clear and concise description of the problem

  • Not enough free space on Aperture Library volume to import iPhoto library into Aperture?

I purchased Aperture 3 from the App Store after using the free trial version for a few weeks.  I downloaded the program and do not have any images imorted into Aperture yet.  I tried to import my iPhoto library using File>Import>iPhoto Library and received this message: There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 10GB of free space.  I have iPhoto 11 and 25,000 images on iPhoto.  I did review the Aperture owners manual and did not find an answer to this.

Well obviously you don't have enough space to import an iPhoto Library that is more than 10 gigs.
But that's not importat right now.
You have the makings of a major problem and you need to address it now.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Aperture,  iPhoto an iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
If you don't you will suffer data loss. I can't stress this enough.
    Regards
    TD

  • Aperture/iPhoto - Use Unified Library or import iPhoto into Aperture?

So as it is June 30th, I've been forced into upgrading to Lion.  Now I know I can take advantage of the Aperture/iPhoto unified library structure.
    But should I?
I am new to Aperture and use it for photos starting in January 2012 going forward.  I have already upgraded to Aperture 3.3.  I am still currently running iPhoto 8.1.2  for photos from 2011 and earlier.  My plan was to eventually import my iPhoto library into Aperture.  Now it appears I don't have to.
So I'm standing at a crossroads and I'd like feedback.  I have read some of the discussions where folks are having issues with migration with both avenues so I'd like to know which one makes more sense.
Should I upgrade to iPhoto 9.3?  Should I keep each library separate?  Should I merge?  Should I import iPhoto into Aperture still and have one library going forward?
Looking for folks with some experience to give me guidance!
    Thanks in advance!
    Chrystal in TX

Merge them.  When you upgrade to iPhoto 9.3 and Aperture 3.3 the programs use the same library format... you can open it in either one.
Note people rarely post feedback about something if it's working for them, so results will always be skewed toward the negative online.  Still, it makes sense to have a backup before upgrading, as a general best practice.

  • IPhoto running really slow - alt cmd doesn't work, restart neither, library has about 2000 photos

I already tried all options when starting iphoto with alt and cmd pressed - doesn't work
    I restarted my mac - doesn't work
I clicked "repair" and "verify" disk in "disk utilities" - doesn't work
My iphoto library has about 2000 pictures, I have a macbook air 11' and the latest version of iphoto. The problem first came up when i imported pictures directly to iphoto from my digicam - iphoto kept on shutting down unexpectedly. Alt+cmd worked then, I rebuilt the library. Since then iphoto is running slow. I cannot even scroll down or up without waiting and getting a beachball.
Please help me - I have no idea what to do!
    Thank you very much!

How much free space do you have on your boot drive?
    Give this a go:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Import from Catalog *very* slow performance.

Importing from a second catalog from a shoot is *very* slow with the last version or couple of versions of Lightroom.  It's been about 20 minutes and the import is moving glacially slow and is only about 20% done.
Here are as many stats as I have:
iMac 27" 3.5Ghz Core i7, 32G of ram, 3T fusion drive (the late 2013 model maxed out)
Master catalog has 117,000 images in it.
The catalog I'm importing has 948 images in it.
CPU use during the import is 100% used by lightroom (note that the multiple CPUs can go to more than 100% so this means I think that one CPU is maxed out, though LR can sometimes take 500% of my CPUs during an export)
Lightroom is using 4.2G of RAM (10G free in activity monitor)
Hard drive is fairly full, but still has 366G free on it (so about 10%)
Lightroom Mobile sync is enabled (not on this folder I don't think) but says "service unavailable" at this point.
Lightroom is fully up to date (5.5) on both iMac and laptop (also a mac in case that matters).  Both are up to date with the latest OS software.
    How I did it was:
Export the shoot as a new catalog on my iMac
Transfer it to my laptop (smart previews only, no masters)
    Edit images, metadata, etc
Transfer the entire folder back (.lrcat, previews, smart previews) to iMac
In my master catalog do an import from catalog
Waited for ages for checking for dupes (which I can understand with such a big catalog)
Selected to import all, changing metadata and develop edits, and selecting to put new images in the folder (not sure why it asked as there weren't any new images)
The last time I did an import I started it and then went out somewhere so I didn't notice how long it took, but this seems completely crazy.  In the time it's taken to write this up it's now about 20 minutes later and the progress bar is maybe at the 33% range.  It's still working away, it's just crazy crazy slow.
Anything to help out or debug would be greatly appreciated.  I suspect it's pure size of the catalog, but 120k isn't outside the realm of what I've heard people say works fine, or maybe the Fusion drive (maybe the OS is trying to move files around behind the scenes)?
Either way this didn't seem to be an issue until the last couple of versions (I haven't gone and re-installed 5.4 or 5.3 to check) and it's starting to really frustrate me

    Hi Jim,
Great suggestion! It opens perfectly fine on its own. I even went as far as re-exporting it once it loaded but am still experiencing the same issue. That same catalog loads perfectly fine on my assistant's iMac.
I can't really think about anything that changed in my environment with the exception of a new Bootcamp partition to run windows on an external Thunderbolt HD but I doubt this is related.
I'm open to any suggestions while I am trying this again... 10 minutes of 'Checking for changed and duplicate photos'.

  • Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.
    * http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
    * the file ''places.sulite'' is in the Firefox profile, a hidden folder that is easy to find by using troubleshooting. see [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite
*[[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]

  • I have version 4.0.1 on Linux (Ubuntu 11.4), and the "Import and Backup" button is missing in the "Library" pane, so I am unable to restore my bookmarks. How can I fix this?

I am using an older computer as a dual-boot machine, with XP Pro and Ubuntu 11.4 both running independently on it. On the Windows side, I have Firefox all set up with my bookmarks, which I restored from a backup made on my primary computer. On the Linux side, there is no button available to do this. I have looked up the Help for this, and followed the directions, but the "Library" pane simply does not have any buttons showing, where it should say "Organize, Views, Import and Backup". The buttons are completely missing.

Ubuntu may have moved those three button as well to that control bar.
