Importing jpg and dng pairs-

With my M8 set for dng+jpg I canot find the jpg's after import. If I try to import from the file (which shows the jpg's to be present) LR tells me that the dng's are already there and does nothing. When I open the card it also shows the jpg's to be present. Can anyone enlighten me?

As you state there have been multiple threads on this since I have been using beta 3. I came across this situation when I was trying to compare how LR raw conversion compared with in camera JPG's. When I first tried to import both files into LR only the raw file was imported. I then separately imported the JPG file into the same folder.
What happened was that LR treated both files as if they were one which ment that LR was not able to distinguish the different extension. This resulted in any edits you made in the develop module with the raw file were also applied to the JPG when it was opened in LR and vice versa. Talk about confusion in trying to compare!!
I reported to Adobe as a bug but the reply came back that it was not considered a bug but it was how the program was designed and I would have to make a name change to one of the files or move the JPG's to a different folder.
I think Adobe should post this in the FAQ thread.

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

  • Importing jpg and CR files from HD

I have just started using Lightroom 4.4. In importing jpg or CR files from my HD,  I get "Preview unavailable for this file", although: 1) the jpg files were generated by using Photoshop CS4, 2) these photos can be "seen"  by Photoshop elements 11 and iPhoto. Any help?
    Mike

It is not a work around - it is a better workflow - shooting RAW plus JPEG and then deleting the JPEGs make no sense and have no value - shoot what you want and when you shoot RAW Photos makes a JPEG which you can access or export should you need it - shooting both is a waste of time, SD card space and disk space
to delete the JPEGs you can make a smart album with the criteria Photo is JPEG and delete the JPEGs by selecting a photo or photos there and holding down the command and motions keys and pressing delete

  • Keyword and IPTC Syncronisation of 13.000 jpg and dng pictures

I have one catalogue with 13.ooo DNG pictures. In this catalogue I put 13.ooo JPG pictures with the same file name. Difference of cause .dng and .jpg As all JPG pictures have all IPTC informations and keywords too, I want to import these informations to the DNG files. Up to now I click one jpg picture at the time, synchronize IPTC Datas with the corresponding dng. Then copy keywords and paste them into dng. 13.ooo pictures. Is there any simple method to do this job? Thanks a lot.

Not sure why this is happening this way but may be closing PSE processes which access and work upon files in the background might make a difference.
Please launch Organizer and click Edit >> Preferences >> Media Analysis and turn off all checkboxes.
From the task manager, kill the following exes if running-
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer
    Adobe Photoshop File Agent
    Dynamic Link Manager
repeat your workflow and check if the issue still happens.

  • Jpg and DNG brightness problem - CS2!

    I am using CS2 with camera raw plug-in 3.7
I am running Windows XP SP3.
I open a DNG file. I do NOT do any processing whatsoever!
I just immediately save it as a JPG file at maximum quality.
However, when I view the two files with the Irfanview picture browser, the JPG seems to be washed out compared to the DNG!
    Can anyone explain this?

The underlying problem that many people have trouble coming to grips with is
    variants of:
'Why does my RAW image look different from the
    1) JPEG
    2) in camera Preview
    3) manufacturer's version
    4) etc...?'.
The question is simple but the answer is not. The answer touches on color space,
white balance, default Camera RAW settings and processing, camera profiles,
etc... Many of the threads here go into really good depth in examining each of
these topics but I don't recall seeing anything that approaches a comprehensive
answer, especially since we now have the DNG Profile Editor.

  • Jpg and raw suffix not appearing on filename in aperture 3.4

Using macbook pro running mountain lion and aperture 3.4.5.  org and jpg suffixes not displayed on filenames on jpg and raw pairs imported from olympus omd em-5.  in addition the suffixes not displayed on older images previously imported from other cameras.
    Thanks for your help.

Have you ever seen the file name extension shown as part of a Metadata Overlay?
That is puzzling, Kirby - I have always seen the filename extension in Aperture; in the Inspector Info panel, the Viewer, the Browser.
I tested again with raw+jpeg pairs, to see, if there is something peculiar about pairs - if Aperture thinks, the filetype should be clear from badge, but I am seeing the extension always.
Even when I created the image file and imported it into Aperture while the Finder option "Show all Filename Extensions" has been disabled, Aperture would still show the extension.
But I noticed, that in Basic View Aperture would give precedence to the version name and display the version name and not the filename, even if I selected the filename with a higher priority in the list of metadata tags. So I deleted the version name from the views and added the "Show metadata labels", to be sure to see the Filename extension. And surprise - Aperture had been showing version names in the basic view overlays instead of the filename, when both filenames and versionnames had been selected, even with the filenames selected first.

  • I exported jpg, tif, psd, and dng files from Lightroom but Aperture does not see them except for dng during import

How do I import jpg, tif, psd files exported from Lightroom 3 into Aperture 3.2?  I had no problems before...seems like since I installed Lion, they do not show up in the import folder.

How are you trying to import them (again) ?  If you're importing through the Import Window and have RAW only set then that's all you'll get.
Also what's an Import Folder? Not sure how Lightroom fits into this. If you share your workflow with us we might be able to help.

  • I have an image sequence in JPG and when I select open image sequence, select all does not work and I can only highlight one frame at a time.  I want to import these frames into QT7 to make a time lapse clip.  Any suggestions

I have an image sequence in JPG that I want to import into quitck time 7 for making a time lapse clip.   It has an option to open the image sequence, but when I do, it only lets me highlight one frame at a time.  The select all option seems to do nothing when I click on it trying to highlight all the frames.
If QT7 is not designed to perform this function, is there another alternative?   iMovie is non intuitive for this kind of operation and I cannot find a clear tutorial for using it to make time lapse clips from a sequence of still frames.
The tutorials Ive found on YouTube are well intended, but they all seem to leave out a vital step that eludes detection.
      Anyway, any help appreciated.
    Thanks
I am new to this forum and I'm not sure I can locate this thread again once I'm out of it.

Yes, I tried that.   The files were ordered by their original numbers as imported from the camera, but I batched them through Phocoshop to downsize all of them into a more manageable file size.   I opened that destination folder from quick time  from where it said select image sequence.   I clicked on the first one and opened it.   The result was a large image with an arrow indicating a movie was ready to go.   When I pressed the arrow, though, I realized it had only imported that one frame so there was no movie.   The files are Jpgs and are about 450 KB each.
To your knowledge are there any links to iMovie tutorials or quick time tutorials that may address this situation?  Maybe there will be one I haven't looked at yet.
        Thanks

  • Is it possible to ignore and not import JPG files when a JPG and raw file of the same name exist?

Is it possible to ignore JPG files on import? I shoot raw + JPG and see no reason to keep the JPGs; I shoot JPG primarily as a backup (I back all the JPGs up online to my smugmug account then delete them before importing the raw files), but they're also occasionally handy if one wants to get a quick print in the field. I know that one can set a preference to "Treat JPEG Files Next to Raw Files As Separate Photos", but even then they still are imported.
As an example, say I have this scenario (not on DSLRS, but on pNs cameras, sometimes a JPG but not raw is captured - I suspect this has to do with how the buffer is filling) with these files on a memory card:
    IMG_0001.JPG
    IMG_0001.CR2
    IMG_0002.JPG
    IMG_0003.JPG
    IMG_0003.CR2
When I import pictures from this folder, I'd like 2 CR2 files and 1 JPG to be imported. I'm even willing to copy the relevant files and drag and drop them onto LR's Library module. But even if I do that, all five files get imported. Thanks!

For this typical example 98% of the image files are transferred while LR is building previews, which is exactly what I was suggesting be avoided.
No, I don't believe that's correct. As I said in my previous post, Lightroom's Import is a two-stage process.....first copy the files from the card, then when that is finished, render whatever previews have been requested.
AFAIK there is nothing unusual about my system, Lightroom has always imported in this two-stage way as far back as I can remember. Based on this I see no 'safety' benefit from copying files first outside Lightroom, then using an ADD import process. On the contrary, as this takes away the possibility of using the "Second Copy on Import" option, as well as having to manually setup import folders, I see nothing but downside from that approach.
Mea culpa, Jim is correct! I checked my Windows 7 system with LR4.2 and I monitored the 'Destination folder' during an import direct from memory card to hard drive. 'Copy and import' showed in the progress bar until all image files were visible using Windows Explorer in the 'Destination folder.' Only after all files had transferred did the progress bar change to ‘Render 1:1 Previews.’ I started using LR1.0 on a Pentium 3 single-core system with Windows XP 32 bit, which I think is when I made this observation. Regardless, it is clear that LR4.2 is using a two-step import process. Thanks Jim for being persistent!
It still begs the question why some people are experiencing very slow imports, damaged image files, and other related import problems from memory cards? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they have 1) 'Rename Files,' 2) 'Automatically write changes into XMP,' or 3) 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' checked in LR preferences. It would be a good idea for anyone experiencing import issues to try an import with these three (3) options unselected.
My apologies to the OP DBarman for going off topic. Hopefully the extra information and observations are helpful.

  • Import process hangs indefinately on JPG and AVI files

    Hi,
I'm seeing a similar issue to some of the other posts.
My configuration is Windows 7 x64, 4GB RAM and a Core i7. All the photos I want imported have been moved to the C drive.
When I try to import a folder with a couple of sub-folders containing a total of about 3000 JPG and AVI files (from a CANON 450D and Fuji Finepix 200EX), the import process hangs inderfinately, and I need to kill the process.
Only around 500 photos get imported.
One strange thing is that I am only able to preview a couple of the files in the preview grid. However when selecting to view a single file instead of the grid view I am able to view the file in question.
I have tried to import one file at a time (for a couple of the ones that fail that is) but the import process still hangs, even though I am able to view the file itself before import.
Have also tried only JPG files, same result.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

What happens if you try to copy these files to your iMac first? Your problem may not be that applications quit when opening but rather you're having problems simply accessing the disk.
If your external disk was formatted as NTFS by your Windows machine then your Mac will not be able to write back to the disk. Your applications may be attempting to save temporary or permanent files back to the disk. Verify this by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Under the Hardware section on the left, look for your drive. It's probably under ATA. Select your drive and look at the "File System". If it is formatted as NTFS, you can copy the files to your iMac, and use the Disk Utility to reformat the drive to a Mac or MS-DOS format.
This could also be a symptom of disk corruption. You can begin troubleshooting by using the Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities to verify/repair your disk. If Disk Utility finds problems but is unable to fix them, you can purchase third party tools such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to attempt to repair your disk.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • IPhoto 9 (8.1.2 (424) and OSX 10.6.4) will not import jpg's

I purchased and installed iLife '09 yesterday. After downloading the latest software updates to iPhoto 9 (8.1.2 build 424) and OSX (10.6.4) I cannot import jpg's into iPhoto. It says "The file is in an unrecognized format." Under GET INFO, the file kind is "JPEG Image". This same photo imported just fine in iPhoto '08. Obviously, iPhoto '09 is designed to import jpg's. How do I fix this?

Thank you, that worked. I was able to import random jpg's, but NOT able to import any jpg from a scanned picture from my Lexmark X7675. They all failed, but other jpg's imported fine. So the problem is with the scanner. I downloaded the new drivers, but that didn't work. I'll now exit this forum and take up the issue with Lexmark. Thanks for your help.

  • Some JPG and AVI files imported from camera to iphoto, but not all

I just imported from camera to iPhoto using card reader and half the pics and a couple movies came over. The rest aren't recognized by my iMac, even though they say JPG and AVI and still run fine on camera. I installed Perian plugin a while back at the recommendation of one of you, which solved that problem and I just installed the recent update. I used time machine to restore old version, but that didn't work. I don't know if this is a Quicktime (v 7.4.1) issue or a problem with the flashcard. I tried opening via photoshop and iMovie. Photoshop CS3's message says "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." iMovie, when I try to drag movie into it says "The file could not be imported: ... Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048". Hopefully one of you knows what is going on. Thanks!!!

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
    Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
