Importing jpgs instead of RAW...

I've just imported my 3rd CF card into lightroom 4. The first one had no problems but with the 2nd and third I have noticed that about 200+ photos in it starts importing the occassional jpg instead of the .CR2 file? By the end of the import it seems to be every second or thirtd file but random not consistent. I have been shooting in both RAW and JPG lately which was never a problem in LR3 - it would only ever import the RAW files in to LR - it would import the JPGs but just to the hard disk. I only noticed when editing and realising that I wasn't getting all the WB options on some of the files...
Anyone alse having this issue? any suggesitons?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply Lee
I hadn't changed the import setting at all from the default (always worked
ok in LR3). The strange thing is that it has imported all the pics in
sequence 321,322 but only some of them are JPEGs - completely random. I
checked the drive where they were imported and it has imported about 2/3
RAW and 1/3 JPEG so I checked the card to make sure something weird hadn't
happened to it and sure enough the card contains all the RAW and JPG files.
I had already started editing about a third of the files before I realised
so I did a new import using LR3 and then deleted the import from LR4 and
then did the 'find file' thingy in LR4 which still found the JPGs.. so I
moved the JPGs to another folder and did the 'find file' thingy again and
this time had to select the matching RAW file... quite time consuming but
it worked!
Just wondering if this is a bug? It didn't happen with the previous import
with all settings the same.
Thanks again

  • Is it possible to ignore and not import JPG files when a JPG and raw file of the same name exist?

Is it possible to ignore JPG files on import? I shoot raw + JPG and see no reason to keep the JPGs; I shoot JPG primarily as a backup (I back all the JPGs up online to my smugmug account then delete them before importing the raw files), but they're also occasionally handy if one wants to get a quick print in the field. I know that one can set a preference to "Treat JPEG Files Next to Raw Files As Separate Photos", but even then they still are imported.
As an example, say I have this scenario (not on DSLRS, but on pNs cameras, sometimes a JPG but not raw is captured - I suspect this has to do with how the buffer is filling) with these files on a memory card:
    IMG_0001.JPG
    IMG_0001.CR2
    IMG_0002.JPG
    IMG_0003.JPG
    IMG_0003.CR2
When I import pictures from this folder, I'd like 2 CR2 files and 1 JPG to be imported. I'm even willing to copy the relevant files and drag and drop them onto LR's Library module. But even if I do that, all five files get imported. Thanks!

For this typical example 98% of the image files are transferred while LR is building previews, which is exactly what I was suggesting be avoided.
No, I don't believe that's correct. As I said in my previous post, Lightroom's Import is a two-stage process.....first copy the files from the card, then when that is finished, render whatever previews have been requested.
AFAIK there is nothing unusual about my system, Lightroom has always imported in this two-stage way as far back as I can remember. Based on this I see no 'safety' benefit from copying files first outside Lightroom, then using an ADD import process. On the contrary, as this takes away the possibility of using the "Second Copy on Import" option, as well as having to manually setup import folders, I see nothing but downside from that approach.
Mea culpa, Jim is correct! I checked my Windows 7 system with LR4.2 and I monitored the 'Destination folder' during an import direct from memory card to hard drive. 'Copy and import' showed in the progress bar until all image files were visible using Windows Explorer in the 'Destination folder.' Only after all files had transferred did the progress bar change to ‘Render 1:1 Previews.’ I started using LR1.0 on a Pentium 3 single-core system with Windows XP 32 bit, which I think is when I made this observation. Regardless, it is clear that LR4.2 is using a two-step import process. Thanks Jim for being persistent!
It still begs the question why some people are experiencing very slow imports, damaged image files, and other related import problems from memory cards? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they have 1) 'Rename Files,' 2) 'Automatically write changes into XMP,' or 3) 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' checked in LR preferences. It would be a good idea for anyone experiencing import issues to try an import with these three (3) options unselected.
My apologies to the OP DBarman for going off topic. Hopefully the extra information and observations are helpful.

  • Aperture does not import Nikon JPG files when RAW and JPG

I own a Nikon D2x that I download files to a Sony 40GB portable HD. When I shoot in RAW + JPG only the RAW file is imported when I connect the Sony HD to my Mac and import to Aperture.
If I open the Sony disk Icon on the Desktop, I can see both the RAW and the JPG. In fact I can finder copy both files to the Desktop with no problem.
Even when I connect the camera itself, the jpg files are not imported.
This makes me think I should just shoot in RAW and save the space on the memory card.
Why does Aperture not import the JPG files?

it does import them ... but only displays the RAW file ... if you drill down into the library package you will see them ...

  • Make imported jpg in Ai CS5 have transparent background instead of white

I have been looking around the forums and help pages, but I can not seem to find my answer.  Maybe I am using the wrong terminology?
In Adobe Illustrator CS5 I have imported a jpg into my artboard.  The jpg has a white background.  I would like to make the background of the imported jpg transparent.  How do I do that?  Thanks.
P.S. I do realize that jpgs do not allow transparency, but its the art piece I have to work with.

Go with a format as Monika suggest that asupports transparency .psd, .tif, .png, .pdf.
If you do not have phothsop, you coudl use the transparency palette to create one in Illustrator (see the reverse looking thumbnail, to the right of the blue splat thumbail)

  • Importing JPG's in standard 4:3 format instead of Widescreen

I have a standard 4:3 project, however when importing jpg's, it wants them to be in widescreen format. they are formatted for 4:3. Is there a reason that final cut is changing them? How do I change this setting?

If they're already in the Timeline, select (highlight) all of them, then right-click on one and select Removes Attributes->Distort.

  • Importing Movs instead of MPEGs

I'm using Premiere Pro CS3 and recently I've had a problem with the program crashing. I noticed that the clips' thumbnails on the timeline were red (even though they were rendered) and then when I scrubbing on the timeline Premiere would crash. Also, the farther along I got in the project the more often Premiere crashed. Just opening the file would make Premiere crash.
I've searched all the forums and the web as much as possible and the only thing that seemed to be a common problem was the MPEG footage that was imported from my camera. Now MOVs are my preference but it seems to me that the preset is for MPEGs. Am I wrong? And if I am, how do I tell Premiere that I want import MOVs instead? The footage shot is NTSC, 1080i, 29.97 frames per second, 1440 X 1080.

  • Import jpg in PRE13 is not working

I just downloaded Premiere Elements 13 to create a slideshow. Whenever I try to import my jpg files, I get an error message.
I resized all files to 4096x2731 pixels with PS Elements 9 but it is still not working. Does anybody know how I could fix this problem?
    Thank you for your support!

    Lena
    1. First thing, I need to make sure we are in sync on...where are you trying to create this slideshow?
I have been assuming in the Elements Organizer 13/Create/Slideshow workspace. Is that correct?
    2. If so, open Premiere Elements 13 Editor to its Expert workspace, and import these problematic jpgs into a new Premiere Elements Editor project, using Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets. Do you get that far without any errors?
    3. Can you open jpg stills with no raw image origin in Premiere Elements 13 Editor or Elements Organizer 13/Create/Slideshow?
Thinking ahead to another mini test..
For troubleshooting purposes only at this time, can we take Lightroom out of the equation?
Will your original raw image import into the Camera Raw version that you have in Photoshop Elements 9? If so, import the raw image there, edit in the Camera Raw dialog, from Photoshop Elements save as jpg and resize jpg. Does that jpg from Photoshop Elements now import without issue into Premiere Elements 13 Editor and or Elements Organizer 13.
We will be watching for further developments.

  • Importing jpg and CR files from HD

I have just started using Lightroom 4.4. In importing jpg or CR files from my HD,  I get "Preview unavailable for this file", although: 1) the jpg files were generated by using Photoshop CS4, 2) these photos can be "seen"  by Photoshop elements 11 and iPhoto. Any help?
    Mike

It is not a work around - it is a better workflow - shooting RAW plus JPEG and then deleting the JPEGs make no sense and have no value - shoot what you want and when you shoot RAW Photos makes a JPEG which you can access or export should you need it - shooting both is a waste of time, SD card space and disk space
to delete the JPEGs you can make a smart album with the criteria Photo is JPEG and delete the JPEGs by selecting a photo or photos there and holding down the command and motions keys and pressing delete

  • I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files.   What am I missing here?

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

  • Doesn't import jpgs anymore!!

I've just had to do a massive re-install after my directory got corrupted. Everything's now back to normal - except iPhoto.
I can see the thumbnails fine (and they tell me the file size and format), but when I go to click on an image to see the hi-res, nothing displays. When I try to import new photos into the app it refuses to accept them. I get the "unknown format" dialogue.
The images are being imported from a Canon S70 digital camera in the normal jpg format. I have thousands of images from before the re-install, nothing has changed and they are all in jpg format.
Any ideas anyone... I'm tearing my hair out on this one...???

    Charlie,
I want you to navigate through the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and find your images and double click them to see if they open in Preview. If they do then they are not corrupt. It could be some kind of data file causing you problems. I really think you should create a new library and have iPhoto import the images from your old library. this will give you new data files free from corruption.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Problems Importing .jpg Files

    Hi,
When I import .jpg files as a slideshow they have an overall blue cast.  Frequently I get a warning message the "...this type of file cannot be transcoded..."
The files can be opened correctly in Photoshop CS5, iPhoto or Preview.
    System: MacPro (Intel)
    OSX 10.8.2
    Memory 12GB
    Encore CS3.0.1

    Hi,
I have the same camera, and exactly the same problem. Could you solve this issue ?
About images of Pentax cameras looking dark in Aperture, many people mention "if Highlight Correction is enabled, the image is shot at -1 EV exposure compensation, and then everything but the highlights is pushed up in the camera when it makes the JPEG version" -- and thus the solution seems to be to disable this highlight correction. But to me it seems that there is no highlight correction in the k100d super...
Aperture 3 actually clips the histogram (dark pixels turn completely black) with respect to the same PEF file read with the Pentax Photo Lab app or the Gimp. The "Raw Fine Tuning" adjustements do not solve this.

  • Plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Blackmagic POCKET Cinema Camera

Are there plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Black Magic POCKET Cinema Camera into Adobe Premiere Pro CS6?

There won't be any new features introduced in CS6, only some bug fixes if ever. All new features go into CC. Rumour has it that Camera RAW will be added into PrPro (sooner or later).
Off topic question: have you tried to convert BMPCC CinemaDNG files into DNG via Adobe DNG Converter? Resulting files are about 15% larger, so I hope that is what constitutes uncompressing them and making possible to import into PrPro CC natively (I'm not on CC, hence can't test, but I'm curious).

    OK.

In Bridge, this 04_ms-48.tif file will NOT open in Camera Raw.

The only difference between the two files is the size. The 05_ms-48.tif is smaller by 132 bytes...
In Silverfast, I think a slight change in density was made. This should not cause a rejection by Bridge!
Each file is 153 MB. I'm willing to send these 2 files to anyone who can perhaps find the difference...

  • PrE 11 will not import .jpg files from organizer

    Hi,
I just upgraded from PS & PrE 8 to the lastest version 11. I'm running on a Windows 7 pc.  My catalog was successfully converted and new pictures were added.  I now want to create a dvd with both pictures and videos.  I tried various ways to import .jpg files in PrE but some (most) of my files will not import.  I get error messages about the files not being supported (missing codex) or the files being too large.
After reading on the forums and on Adobe help site.  It seems opening and resaving the files in the organizer fix this.  I try and it worked.  As I have many files to import (200+), I wonder if there is a way to do some sort of a batch process for all file.
Secondly, also I read PrE can automatically resize the image file to the project size.  How can this be acheive ?
    Thanks for your help

Please see my answer to this question. It's essentially the same answer I'd give you.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1129183?tstart=0
You can not create a playable DVD or incorporate video and photos in the same project with full resolution photos on it. Video resolution/TV resolution is only 720x480 (standard resolution) or 1920x1080 (high rez).
Premiere Elements has a governor that limits the size of a photo you can add to a video project (which is probably what you're running into). In fact, you'll get much better results if you use LOWER resolution photos in your video project -- 1000x750 pixels for DVDs and standard resolution video and 2000x1500 for BluRays and high-def video.
