Importing Large Qty of Pictures

Need some advice. I have installed LR 1.3 and read about many of the features online/books. However, I have not come across the answer for a very important question. I have over 40K pictures that currently reside in a hiearchal folder grouped by year/month/day shot...Should I import all of them at once? or import each folder individually (which would be more then 700)? What are the pros and cons of each? I need some guidance on this one as I am leaning to importing them all at once but am concern that there may be some "gotcha" hence why I am asking for help.
Thank you

>Once they've all imported, select all in Grid mode, and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews and go to bed and leave it to work!
The requirement for selecting the images was confined to history a long time back. If anything it actually hurts performance because Lr will do an "Accumulating Metadata" on a fairly regular basis.
So, once the images are imported you need only select either the "All Photos" or "Previous Import" option from the Library panel (see attachment). You then go to the Library>Previews sub menu an choose either Standard or 1:1 Previews. Lightroom will scan all of the images determine which need to have previews rendered.
Edit:
Looks like Sean was quicker than me ;-)

iPhoto cannot import your photos because
there is not enough free space on the

  • Importing large picture database

Trying to import 100+ folders with pictures into iPhoto 6 I am looking for an automated way to do this: All pictures have to come in an iPhoto folder with the same name as the original folder. Any suggestions?
    thank you
iMac intel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Seppe,
You can choose to use your own database system.
    From the iPhoto Help menu:
Using advanced options when importing from a hard disk
By default, iPhoto copies photos imported from your hard disk, leaving the originals in their original location and making duplicates for use in the iPhoto library.
However, if you already have an extensive collection of photos saved on your computer and you prefer to leave your photos in their current file structure, you can choose to have iPhoto point to your original photo files instead of copying them in iPhoto. Either way, you can still make full use of iPhoto.
If there is no color profile embedded in a photo viewed in iPhoto (many digital cameras do not include a color profile with an image), iPhoto temporarily assigns a ColorSync profile that helps display the photo properly within the application. If your photo already has a color profile embedded, iPhoto will use that color profile.
To set advanced options for photos imported from your hard disk:
    Choose iPhoto > Preferences
    Click Advanced.
Select or deselect "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library."
Deselecting this option means that iPhoto will not duplicate photos when importing them into the application, but will leave them in their original files on your computer. When you edit these images in iPhoto, however, the edited versions will be saved in the iPhoto library, not your original files. Your original files remain untouched.
If you selected "Copy files," select or deselect "Add ColorSync profile."
The profile assigned will usually be "cameraRGB," an Apple-specific version of the commonly used sRGB, which allows image colors to map more closely to Apple monitors. If your image file settings specify the use of Adobe RGB, iPhoto assigns that profile. If another color profile is already embedded, iPhoto uses the profile provided."
If you want to copy images into the iPhoto database then here is some tips:
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
    Hope this helps!

  • After Effects stops responding when importing larger video

Although this is likely a common topic, I've searched just about everywhere for an answer to this new problem I'm experiencing and I have had no luck.
Just recently, out of the blue, when I try to import larger (100+mb) quicktime videos into after effects the program stops responding and it doesn't give me an error message.  Smaller 2mb videos import without a problem but I can't even drag a large video into the comp without it closing down on me.  I've imported 400 rpf pictures in sequence which was 1gb and it worked fine but larger videos just shut it down.  I've tried the following:
    - adjusting my OpenGL settings.
    - removing my gl plugin
    - adjusting my texture memory
    - resetting preferences back to default
    - purged my image and video memory
    - cleared all the caches
    - re-installed quicktime and made sure it was the correct version
    - re-installed after effects (cs5.5) version 10.5.5.253
    - reduced resolution
    - swore loudly and cried uncontrolably
I have used this videos many times in the past without problem it just seems that all of a sudden the video is too big making the program shut down.
I'm on Windows 7 Intel quad core processor
    16gb ram
Grapics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 (4064mb ram)
I've checked the graphics card and I'm running the most up to date version.
I hope I have provided enough information.  I appreciate any help in advance.

Well, I'd back up all your data first, if you haven't already. You should be doing that all along anyway. (Don't forget things like Photoshop brushes, Animation presets, etc. in your Adobe folders.)
Alright, before we go crazy, I would Google around for instructions on how to completely remove K-Lite.
If, you follow that and it's still messing up, the second thing I would do is to uninstall all your Adobe software.
Then run the CS Cleaner Adobe provides on their website.
    Uninstall Quicktime.
Download and install a new version of Quicktime 7 (NOT Quicktime X).
And then reinstall your Creative Suite software.
If, after those steps, it still doesn't work, then you are going to have to go nuclear.
The first step is to back up all of your data. Documents, fonts, project files, stock footage libraries, music, animation presets, project templates, etc. Anything that you've added to the computer (except for programs).
Your computer either came with recovery disks or the ability to create them. Make the disks if you haven't already.
Put them in and reboot the machine. It should give you an option to wipe out everything and install a clean version of Windows. You will then have to reinstall your programs (NOT k-lite ) and put all your files back on the machine.

  • When I try to import pictures of my daughter, what gets imported is about 50 pictures of world flags, then masks.  I can't import any pictures now.  I am on MacBook Pro.  I called Applecare and honestly got 'gee I don't know' for an answer.

I can't import pictures into iPhoto.  (f I can right click and there is a choice to put in iPhoto that works fine) .  No matter what happens, even when I download them first, all that imports is a mass of pictures of flags and masks, and they are the only things that are imported, no matter what picture I try to import into my librarly.  Can anyone help me with this?  I live in a small down 5 hours from an apple store so I can't just take it in and get somene to look at it.
I am on a Macbook Pro.  I called AppleCare and all i got was 'gee, I don't know'.  Everything was fine until about 3 weeks ago

Elaine.  What are you trying to import from?  Are you inserting a camera memory card in the slot on the side of your mac? Are you connecting your camera to the mac through a USB cable? It sounds like you can see your pictures, where do you see them, on the memory card that you open on your desktop, or are you using software that came with your camera?

    1. Is there a way to import large XML files into HANA efficiently?
    2. Will it process it node by node or the entire file at a time?
    3. Are there any data services provided to do this?
This for a project use case i also have an requirement to process bulk XML files, suggest me to accomplish this task

    Hi Patrick,
I am addressing the similar issue. "Getting data from huge XMLs into Hana."
Using Odata services can we handle huge data (i.e create schema/load into Hana) On-the-fly ?
    In my scenario,
I get a folder of different complex XML files which are to be loaded into Hana database.
Then I gotta transform & cleanse the data.
Can I use oData services to transform and cleanse the data ?
If so, how can I create oData services dynamically ?
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You could have changed the zoom settings somehow. Try going to the View menu, down to Zoom and select ''Reset''.

  • Is the only way to import large amount of data and database objects into a primary database is to shutdown the standby, turn off archive log mode, do the import, then rebuild the standby?

I have a primary database that need to import large amount of data and database objects. 1.) Do I shutdown the standby? 2.) Turn off archive log mode? 3.) Perform the import? 4.) Rebuild the standby? or is there a better way or best practice?

Instead of rebuilding the (whole) standby, you take an incremental (from SCN) backup from the Primary and restore it on the Standby.  That way, if, for example
    a. Only two out of 12 tablespaces are affected by the import, the incremental backup would effectively be only the blocks changed in those two tablespaces (and some other changes in system and undo) {provided that there are no other changes in the other ten tablespaces}
    b. if the size of the import is only 15% of the database, the incremental backup to restore to the standby is small

  • Canon IXUS 950 won't import large AVI files into iPhoto

The new canon Ixus 950 IS wont import large (over 50mb) AVI files in iPhoto, why not?
They sit on the SD card and then sometimes subsequent pics and video's don't upload.
If there are say, 3 x 40mb files they dont upload either... After waiting ages the box pops up, unable to import.
I can individually import the AVI files under 50mb
I also note that the hard drive icon for the camera does not appear on the desktop or the finder so I could not 'drag' them in either...
    Any ideas?
    David

I have a similar problem with importing large AVIs from my Canon A610. iPhoto would import everything else (usually) except the large AVIs, which it claims is unreadable. In this particular case (~470MB file), it plays in QuickTime, I've resaved it using QT (still won't import) and converted it from MJPEG to Cinepak (still won't import). I'm now considering cutting the AVI up into smaller chunks and importing those... but any other options before that?
Misc computer details: Main HD is 120GB with 30 for Boot Camp, 80 remains for Mac OS X, but the iPhoto Library is on an external HD (also 120GB, same model as internal HD except not SATA) formatted to FAT32. Would 10.4.11 make a difference here?

  • Import stops at 30 pictures

Using the Media Reader to transfer pictures to a 60 gig iPod photo with a 256 SanDisk CF card. Was trying to transfer 56 pictures. It just quit at 30 pictures, and there were 26 question marks in the iPod thumbnail section after the 30 pictures that were imported (avg 2 mb each).
The Media Reader works fine with a 512 SD card which imported 460 mb of pictures without problems. But the CF card which works in every other way iPhoto, Finder copys, etc. (it checks out fine with Disk utility also). I format it with the camera.
    Any ideas?

  • RoboHelp freezing when importing large word docs

What are your experiences with RoboHelp for HTML Help when
    importing large Word docs?
Mine seems to stop responding and has to be restarted. Also,
creating PDFs for large docs seems to be a problem.
While I am here, could someone please answer these questions:
    1. Does RoboHelp support conditional inclusion/exclusion and
replacement of text? Where you can use a condition to display one
    text OR another.
    2. Does Robo support Modular Help?
    3. What about automating output generation using batch files?
    Is this possible?
    4. Can PDF outputs be customized using templates?
it looks like Robo offers partial solutions to each of the
above questions but I will like to hear your experiences, as I am
on evaluation the tool with limited time.
    TIA.

  • Imported ID pdfs appearance alters when imported into Quark as picture

Can anyone tell me why Indesign created pdf's change when imported into a quark picture box? I receive ads from various companies for a magazine in hi-rez pdf formats and when imported the appearance changes to include all the components/elements/boxes/etc. of the make-up of the ad....the things that are not supposed to be seen. Please help... advertisers are complaining and i can not stop it, or fix it.

Quark converts PDFs to EPS internally and thus has no support for the
more advanced features of PDFs exported from InDesign.
You should request EPS or PDF X/1-a if you want to continue to use
Quark. That said, this is an InDesign forum so I will heartily recommend
    you switch to InDesign.
As you've discovered more and more folks are doing just that and you're
going to be left in the dust and those advertisers are going to be
looking elsewhere to spend their money.

  • Is it possible to successfully import large Entourage databases into Mail?

    Hi:
Perusing lots of threads, it looks like Mail has some issues importing large Entourage databases; my Entourage Identity is about 6 GB.
The most current of the threads I saw was a few months old. Does anyone know if Apple has recently found a way to import these large files successfully, preserving the subfolder hierarchy and getting all of the messages transferred?
The other alternative for me is just to start with Mail fresh and run Entourage in a parallel fashion for half a year or so, until I no longer regularly need to use Entourage, but I'd prefer the more elegant approach.
    Thank you!

Char did the suggested solution work? I suspect not - but if it did please confirm. I've also been trying to import large business use mail databases from entourage 2004 & 2008 into Mail without much luck. In one case it took 12 separate imports because each would fail after successfully importing a few folders. After each fail I needed to logout the user and login again in order for Mail to "find" the entourage mail file again. As a final step I had to reassemble, from the import folders, the previous file structure by drag and drop. Complete pain and the result is questionable no matter how carefully I do this. Without a good import solution we will have to stick with entourage 2008 or upgrade to the new version of Outlook 2011. Disappointing performance from apple Mail on this.

  • I am importing a folder of pictures and they import the same picture?

    Hi,
I am importing a folder of pictures and the picture information is correct but the thumbnails are all the same picture. If I move the pictures onto the time line they are the same picture. I just upgraded from CS3 to CS5. I tried to update the program but it said that Premier Pro CS5 is up to date. I have tried different folders but they import various pictures with incorrect thumbnails and the pictures are wrong also? Is this a program error?

OK everyone, good news. I am not losing my mind
I resized them to 72 dpi at 640x480 (4:3 normal video as specified by the new project. They still do not import correctly under any of the conditions I listed above. This time, I also dragged them from Adobe Bridge to the bin I was working out of. FYI, 300 dpi at 720x480 is EXACTLY the same file size as 72 dpi 720x480. I also have been able to import onsie-twosie photos at full resolution and they auto-fit in the video frame.
I believe many of you were able to fix this problem with the re-sizing work-around, it did not work for me. I have a hard time believing resolution matters when the pixel dimensions are the same. this looks to me like a configuration issue or something wrong with the 64 bit only version for cs5. CS4 works fine on my virtual machine I created to test (this is how I resolved the issue and got my project done).
