Importing layered photoshop files into FCP7

I have made a photoshop file (tiff) with a transparent background. The file has three layers. When I import it into FCP7 it appears with a white background. Also when I double click on it it does not show me the layers...Where am I going wrong...help!

Also, there may be a problem with a layered photoshop file saved on a PC.  You may need to open and save in photoshop on the Mac before importing into fcp.

  • A problem with importing layered PSD file into Flash

    Hi.
There's a problem with importing layered PSD file into Flash.
If I import a layered PSD file, some part the color of the lower layer is shown at the edge of objects or shadows. Instead, if I crop each layers first and import them, there's no problem.
If the higher layer has brush or transparent effects, it becomes worse.
    Any help with this problem?
    Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Pixelation when importing layered Photoshop file

    Just brimming with questions tonight:
I'm importing layered Photoshop images into FCP, with the individual layers creating seperate clips in the timeline. So far, so good. But the clips are looking very pixelated compared to in PS. The document size in PS is set to the pixel dimensions in FCP, i.e. 720x576 for DV PAL.
Any suggestions for what's happening? Does it have anything to do with setting square vs aspect ratio pixels in PS? (I'm using pixel aspect ratio D1/DV PAL at 1.07)
    Any help much appreciated!

the difference between PS and FCP is mindboggling
It should be different (although not really mind boggling). In Photoshop, you're seeing the image at it's native resoution ... in FCP, once you place it in the Timeline, you're seeing it at the Sequence resolution and with all the restrictions of the codec your Sequence is set for.

  • "unable to open project file" after importing layered Photoshop file

After spending a day of work, I saved and closed my 720p project. Today, I can't open it. I get a message saying: "Unable to open project file." Same thing happens with the auto-saved copy.
I have narrowed down the problem to this: I made a new 720p project file. Without doing any work, I import a single layered Photoshop file (.psd), then save and close the project. When I try to open it, I get the message again: "Unable to open project file."
Works fine at home. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    PPJ

I'm just now having the same problem, though I'm using FCE 3 . I can open older (NTSC) files. Just not new HD files that I have also blindly used alpha+Photoshop layers in. When I create a new HD file with a few HD clips in it and even use an audio track from the project I'm wanting to make, and use TIFF versions of the graphics and save it, it will open right up -- but something about these PS files.

  • Importing layered photoshop files

I'm trying to import a layered photoshop file ( .psd and .tif - neither works ). I was led to believe that this would import with its layers intact in order to make an overlay menu but that doesn't happen. All of the layers do import however as a single layered file. I'm new to DVDSP so probably doing something really stupid. Cheers Doug

Actually, go ahead and use layered menus if you feel like it - just keep in mind that DVDSP is creating in the background a separate menu background for each button state, and so this type of menu usually behaves a bit sluggishly.
Some tips for working with layered psds -
They will always import as a single file. If you can see the layers when you apply it to a menu, you have done it right. Sometimes if the bit depth or color mode for the psd is incompatible, a layered file will appear to import as a flat image without layers.
Resize the menu to your video frame size and set the pixel aspect ratio in photoshop.
Save a version of your original file in which you:
-combine any layers that do not need to be separate
-flatten or rasterize any text layers and layer effects, as these will not be supported in DVDSP
-get rid of all layer sets or groups
Make sure you are creating a layered menu in DVDSP - it's a separate command from "add menu". You'll see the photoshop layers in the inspector when you add the psd to the menu, which can then be turned on and off for each button's selection state. Even a simple menu can seem complex in this window, but play with it enough and you'll figure it out.

  • Replacing Imported Layered Photoshop Files

From the file browser (or the Media Tab) in Motion (2.0.1) you can easily replace an object in a layer by dragging and dropping a new file onto that object. This is handy if you modified an image but want to apply the same animation to it. So here's my question:
I have an imported layered photoshop logo in my project and I want to replace some of those layers with a modified version of that logo (the animation is staying the same so I'm trying to avoid copying and pasting hundreds of keyframes to my altered layers). How can I replace the individual layers?
I tried importing a single layer from the new PS file as a test but in the Media Tab, Motion still references the entire photoshop file so when I try to replace the corrosponding layer it just inserts the entire flattened PS file.
    What say you?

    hi,
    welcome to the forums.
i have found that if i update the photoshop file then the imported layers in Motion update as well. Are you not seeing this?
Could you not save the layer out of the photoshop file as a separate file and import that?
    regards

  • Importing layered photoshop file

I am having trouble importing the Photo Shop layered menu file into studio pro. also, when I try to import the asset, many times studio pro crashes...?
    any advice?
    Thank you

    Is it CYMK or RGB?
Created of a Mac or PC?
Have layer effects and type been rasterized?

  • Can't import layered photoshop files

In Motion's File Browser all I get is a big white image with an error message saying "This layered photoshop file wasn't saved with a composite image". I have maximum compatibility checked in photoshop (for saving files) which is the ONLY thing in PS that mentions saving with composite images.
This is lame. But not as mind-numbingly lame as not being able to modify JPGs (already in use in Motion) without quitting the program, saving the JPG, then re-opening Motion to get the file to update.
Apple really needs to make this program more compatible with the world's most common photographic editing program!

I use layered Photoshop files on a regular basis with no issues. Make sure the .psd file is in the RGB color space - won't work in CMYK or greyscale.

  • Problem importing layered Photoshop files

Just bought Aperture from the App Store, hoping that it can replace Bridge. I have about 100K RAW files, a few thousand film scans (TIFFs) and several thousand finished Photoshop files to manage.
I can't get layered 16-bit Photoshop files to correctly import. The preview is jumbled and corrupted and often has fragments from other images, thumbnails are mostly black or random noise. Metadata does show up ok.
And no, they weren't saved with Maximize Compatibility enabled. Everything has worked with CS and then CS3 for several years.
JPEGs and RAW files import great BTW.
    So...what's my next move?

    downstairsdave wrote:
I'm trying to find out if this is a known bug, I've searched high and low and have not found any useful info regarding Aperture 3.1.1.
I do save files with a full-sized preview (Photoshop options) but that doesn't seem to help.
The "Maximize Compatibiltiy..." option saves a flattened version inside the PSD file so that programs that cannot display transparency and / or layers can use the flattened version of the file for displaying.
This was supposedly fixed in AP 2.x according to this KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23626
Although apparently fixed, I still recommend in my comments that people use the 'Always' setting since there still seems to be an issue for some people (mostly people sending 16-bit PSD files).
Note - I have never had an issue with PSD files (in AP 3), but I send as 8-bit files in sRGB color space.
You might test with 8-bit files, and if these work consistently; I would recommend sending feedback concerning a possible bug or incompatibility with 16-bit files.
Here is the link for PS CS5 help file on the matter:

  • Import layered ai files into motion and problem  when export to psd

has anyone found a way to import  rapidly ai files layered into motion?
I tryed to export from ai a psd file in layers but i am allowed to do it only in cmyk, and result is weird, all color changed. any help please?

Converting vector layer to shape when the vector layer contains a gradient is not supported. Gradients will come in as a gray fill. If you have more than one fill on a layer you will get both fills but you will loose the blend modes or any opacity masks on the fill. Basically you're stuck with solid color fills and solid color paths when you use Shape to Vector Layer.
Also, each illustrator path you want to turn into a shape must be on a separate layer. Multiple shapes on in the same layer will come in as a shape layer but the paths and fills will not be correct. AE will do it's best to figure out what you want but the chances for multiple paths filled with different colors in the same layer to be converted correctly is remote.
You can, however, add and modify as many gradient fills as you like to a shape layer in AE.

  • Difficulty Importing Layered Photoshop File

I wasn't able to come across an answer via "search" so...
I'm working on a slideshow using photos I manipulated in CS2 on a PC and then transferred them to the Mac. Subsequently, when I try importing them into FCE, they appear only as a single-layer graphic (my understanding is that they should appear as individual sequences).
Any suggestions as to how to correct this are greatly appreciated.
iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Express

That's correct. PSD files saved on a PC do not import with the layer structure intact. You would have to open the file in Photoshop on a Mac and save it there to get the layered image in a sequence.

  • How to import a PSD file into Indesign WITH layers so it can be edited/saved as an InDesign file?

How to import a Photoshop file into Indesign CS6 so that it's layers show in InDesign and it can then be edited/saved as an InDesign file?

    MyTienN wrote:
Someone had mentioned the possibility of saving each individual layer in Photoshop as a png file and importing into Indesign and adjusting it in there
What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.

  • Can't import Photoshop files into Premiere Pro

I am learning Premiere Pro CS6 and I am using a book titled "Classroom in a Book".  One of the exercises is to import a Photoshop file into Premiere Pro.  I received a generic error message "The importer reported a generic error".  I found that if I run Premiere Pro as an Administrator that the issue goes away.  I wasn't too worried about it until I realized that my ShuttleXpress does not function when I am running Premiere Pro as an Administrator.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on???? This is very frustrating.

I only have one account on the computer and it has Administrator priveleges.  What I am doing to make it work is opening the application using the "Run as Administrator" command (e.g., right click application shortcut on desktop, choose "Run as Administrator").  I am not a Windows guru but I would guess there is something different between opening an Application with a user that has Administrator priveleges and opening an Application choosing "Run as Administrator".  Also, your answer still does not address the fact that I can't use my jog wheel.
    Anyone else have some ideas?

  • Imported a .psd file into project - why showing up as a sequence?

    hi everyone
i successfully imported a photoshop file into a project recently, after help from you, and it ended up working fine. I adjusted the size and placement in the viewer and got what i wanted.
i have tried to do it again, with a different photoshop file, however this time when i import it into the browser it appears with a sequence icon, rather than clip icon. so when i double click to open it up and adjust - it opens a new dedicated timeline rather than in the viewer - i THOUGHT i'd done everything the same - but i guess not.
    what did i do different?
    thanks
    hugh

Its a feature! Not a bug. By importing a .psd file you can play with the layers in FCP. Apply motion features to a layer, fade the layers on and off at different times, or just change the opacity to suit your background. I know several people that create all their lower thirds for a show in one .psd file and then change the info by turning on and off the different layers. The advantage is you can easily maintain control and placement of your graphics. Like the previous responder I personally don't like .psd's in my timeline. I prefer .pict. Probably because when I started editing it was the only choice on a Mac and it allows for an alpha channel. Using alpha or matte channels make the best keys.

  • Any way to import multi-layered Illustator file into Motion?

I have an Illustrator map of Europe and i would like to bring it into Motion.
I know that Motion can import Illustrator files as pdf but is there any way to import a multi-layered illustrator file into Motion. I just saw this web site regarding a Motion plug-in that claims to do just this:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16298/layerlink

Without a dedicated plug or FxPlug, Motion has no inherent ability to parse Illustrator layers.
We just bust the layers out and save them as individual files. Or, of course, we use After Effects.
