Importing mail from backup disk

Hi
My G5 iMac running 10.4.11 has packed in beyond repair, so am getting a new iMac with Snow Leopard installed. Fortunately I was able to do a complete backup before my iMac completely stopped working.
How should I transfer all my email / folders / account settings to my new iMac?
Phil

Hi Phil:
I did restore (actually migrate using the SD clone) from a G4 to an Intel-based iMac. If you restore the whole clone, you will restore to OS X 10.4 (not what you want, I assume).
As I recall, I cloned my G4 using SD to an external drive. Then I fired up the new iMac (it had OS X 10.5 at that time), hooked the external HD to it, and used migration assistant. Migration assistant gave me the option to "point" at the clone. In my case, everything worked very well!

How to migrate Mail & Contacts from backup disk of old PPC iMac (10.3.9) to new iMac (10.8.1)?
The Firewire disk is connected and have been able to copy across document folders etc, but Migration Assistant doesn't find the disk so that method no good.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks, that looks very comprehensive.  Wish I'd seen it before completing Set-Up Assistant initially!  Will follow his instructions and report back.

  • Importing mail from Exchange to MS CRM

    Hello all,
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 receives all mail since it was activated, the emails were in Outlook before CRM be active not appear.
I do not have the backup of independent Outlook but Microsof Exchange Server.
How do I import mail from Exchange to CRM?
    Please would like response!
    Many thanks
    Best regards

    1. CRM is not a backup for Exchange. So while I get while there can be business value of old email in CRM, don't treat it like a backup system.
    2. If you use the Dynamics CRM Outlook Plugin, as a user you can just go back to your old email archive and click "Track in CRM".  This will also give you the granularity of what's relevant and what's not for storing in CRM.

  • Is it possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order?

Is i possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order they appear on the disk?  When I import them, the come out in random order.

When first imported the photos will be sorted in the Event chronologically. On the disk they well be sorted by the Finder and that's usually alphanumerically by file name. So select the photos in the event and type Commnad+N.  That will create a new album at the left with the photos in it. Then go to the View ➙ Sort Photo menu and select "By Title".  That should give you the same order as you view the photos on the disk via the Finder.

  • Import mails from microsoft outllook to mac outlook

Am trying to import mails from MS outlook to MAC outlook and its not importing all msgs/ folders..
    adv why??

You're in luck, Imap and Exchange accounts store their data on the server.
Leave Outlook alone, just add the accounts to Mail and let them synchronize, no import required. You can leave them in Outlook or remove them as you please once everything in Mail is done.

  • Just deleted an important file from backup. How do I retrieve it?

Just deleted an important file from 'Backup' in 'Finder'. How do I retrieve it?

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
From what I understand is that you deleted a backup file. Could you describe your problem with a little more detail please.

  • In Yosemite, I try to import mail from Apple Mail 8.0 into Thunderbird 31.20.0, but it says "No mailboxes found"--what should I do?

In Yosemite, I try to import mail from Apple Mail 8.0 into Thunderbird 31.20.0, but it says "No mailboxes found"--what should I do? I've tried all sort of other approaches, but none works. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! Ken

Try copying the whold SD card to your desktop by holding down the Option key and dragging the SD card icon about 2 inches away from the where the card sits on the desktop. This should trigger Mac OS to make a copy of the whole SD card onto your Macintosh's desktop. Once it finishes from there, eject the SD card. Reboot your Mac then open iMovie without launching any other programs whatsoever. Go to the File Menu Import Movies from File... And point it at the copy of the SD card and see if it crashes again.

  • Mail app crashes when importing mail from Netscape.

I have been using Netscape 4 in classic mode for years. I have a HUGE inbox that I need to keep for reference purposes and I would like to switch to using Mail. Mail crashes when I try to import my mailboxes. I moved all my mail to the newest Netscape and tried again and again it crashed.
Is there a third party program that can help this along?

You might want to take a look at Eudora Mailbox Cleaner - it can import mail from Thunderbird to Mail so I guess Netscape Mail should be fine as well:

  • Importing mail from Thunderbird incomplete

I'm having some issues importing mail from Thunderbird (Windows). I have exported them as mbox format and copied it across on my Mac. I then import it using mail and select Thunderbird and pointed it to the correct folder.
It starts importing fine, but the issue is that it only imports 1 email only. I have 2000+ emails in the mbox.
I tried Thunderbird for Mac, and imported it across. It works fine importing from Thunderbird Windows -> Thunderbird Mac.
Then I tried importing again to Mail by pointing to my ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles folder and once again the import completes with no errors, but only one single email was imported.
    Any ideas?

You’d get better results if you use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion instead.

  • How do I import mail from Outlook 2010?

When I try to import my emails from Outlook 2010 I get the following message:
"An error occurred importing mail from Outlook
Unable to find mail to import. Check to make sure the mail application is correctly installed on this machine."

You'll need to do it from a 32bit version - Mail/Live mail do not recongise outlook 2010 64 bit.  Dropping EML files into Outlook folder has always created new messages with attachments - this is nothing new.
ETA: if you can email the messages as attachments, you can drag them from the message and drop them in the Inbox.  This obviously works best if there aren't hundreds of messages to convert. :)
There are 3rd party utilties that can make the conversion but they may not work with the 64bit version. See http://www.slipstick.com/config/convmsg.htm for a list of programs that can make the conversion but i don't know if any of them work with 64bit outlook.

  • Importing Mail from Mac Mail

I just installed Leopard on my eMac and it installed just fine. However, I seemed to have installed it clean instead of an upgrade.
I see the files for my mail in my "username"|Library|Mail|Mailboxes folder, but cannot import them. When I go to Mail and choose "File" then "Import Mailboxes", I get a option of where to import mail from. I choose "Mail for Max OS X" and then show it where I saw my mailboxes, but they do not show up for me to select them.
    How do I do this?
    HELP!!

Well, I have finally figured out the problem. Some moron (that would be me) installed Leopard on the external hard drive instead of the main hard drive. Time Machine will NOT use the same drive that it boots from to back up the computer.
Solution: Unplug the external drive, let it boot to the old operating system, reinstall Leopard, plug in the external hard drive and then configure Time Machine to use the external drive.
Thank you for all your help and suggestions.

  • Can't import mail from OS9 backup folder

I recently got an Intel Mac Mini and had the Apple Store transfer files from my G3 PB, running OS9.2. My mail from an old version of Mozilla shows up in a DATA BACKUP folder on the mini. For instance there is an "Inbox" which opens with TextEdit. "Inbox.msf" opens in Excel. When I open the OSX Mail application and go to Import Mailboxes I checked Netscape/Mozilla and tried to choose "Inbox" but it is grey and not selectable. Is there a way to do this? Thanks for any help.
    Owen

    Hello all,
Thank you for your help, but I figured it out on my own.
Here is how I did it.
    1. If you are moving "Mailboxes" you've created on a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac
you must have the Same Versions of OS X running on each system.
Please note that this is for people who are just setting up there NEW INTEL MAC and wish to transfer "Mailboxes" from the PPC Mac, and can not get the Migration Assistant to work.
If you've already created New "Mailboxes" on the Intel system they may be overwritten/replaced using this process. Resulting in the loss of any newly created "Mailboxes" on the Intel.
    2. Be sure you have Tiger updated to the same versions on both systems.
    3. On the PPC Mac, go to your Users/(your user name here)/Library/Mail folder.
    4. Locate in the Mail folder a folder named "Mailboxes".
    5. Copy the "Mailboxes" folder from the PPC Mac to an external hard drive.
    6. Eject the hard drive from the PPC Mac and turn off the hard drive.
    7. Connect the external hard drive to the Intel Mac and turn on the hard drive.
    8. Wait for the external drive to mount.
    9. Be sure that the MAIL application is not running on the Intel Mac, then go to Users/(your user name here)/Librery/Mail.
    10. Look inside the Mail Folder. Do you see a folder named "Mailboxes"?
    11. If yes, see step 13.
    12. If no, see step 14.
    13. Stop and I will try to post another solution for tranfering "Mailboxes" into an existing "Mailboxes" folder so you don't overwrite or replace your new "Mailboxes"
    14. If you don't see a folder named "Mailboxes" in your Mail folder, do the following.
    15. Drag and drop the "Mailboxes" folder you copied onto the external drive, into the "Mail" folder on the Intel Mac.
    16. After all of the files have been copied to the Intel Mac, Start the MAIL application.
    17. All of the "Mailboxes" you copied over should now appear in the "Mailboxes" list under your mail accounts list.
Hope this helps anybody else who has run into this problem.
    Regards,

  • Importing Mail from SL Time Machine Backup into Lion

    Quick Question:
When importing my 14k+ worth of mail through the built in method provided by Mail:
What I was told was to go into my Time Machine backup of Snow Leopard, and navigate to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes, and copy the Mailboxes folder onto the desktop. From there, I would redirect the "import mailboxes" function back to the Mailbox folder on my desktop. As I went into the Mailbox folder I only found the following: Deleted Messages.mbox, Notes.mbox, Outbox.mbox, ToDos.mbox, and there was not ainbox.mbox
    My question is:
I have a few email addresses: one for school, two others for personal use. And within my ~/Library/Mail folder in my TM Snow Leopard backup, there are three folders that correspond to my three email addresses: IMAP-(schoolemailaddress), IMAP-(personalemailaddress1), POP-(emailaddress2), & POP-(emailaddress3). And so, my question is which folder do I import my mail from the TM to the new Mail in Lion because only in these folders do I see an "Inbox.mbox"?
    Thanks!

In addition, how come mail has taken up close to 12gb of HD space when it was importing my mail over from snow leopard when I first launched mail in Lion?
