Importing mail from Thunderbird to Mail

I have discovered the secret. With MobileMe and push email coming with the new iPhone 2.0 upgrade, I decided it was time to stop using Thunderbird and start using Mail. The problem was that when I began to import Thunderbird mail into "Mail" I ran into all kinds of problems - some Thunderbird mail boxes were not recognized, some were imported but had a fraction of the emails in that folder imported, and etc.
Well, here's the solution and this is what I did - go to Eudora's web site, and find and download: "Eudora Mailbox Cleaner 4.8" - it is a small application that I saved on my desktop. Then I followed the following steps:
1. I compacted my Thunderbird mailboxes first (choose "File → Compact Folders" from the menu in Thunderbird) to remove already deleted messages from the mails files and to speed up the migration process.
2. Then I located my Thunderbird profile folder and dragged it onto the 'Eudora Mailbox Cleaner' icon in the Finder. Then I chose the drop-down menu item to select Thunderbird instead of Eudora (just followed the appropriate settings in the dialog, with Thunderbird as the source application which migrated my messages to Apple Mail).
3. All my mail data from Thunderbird showed up in Mail - Import folder - when I restarted Mail.
4. One more step - I then had to select each imported folder and go to the Menu item: "Mailbox/Rebuild" and the folder that looked empty was filled with all the imported messages.
5. It was slick, and I made the 3 days I had fretted over the process, trying everything I could think of, seem like a distant bad dream.

P.S. When you download the Eudora app, it comes with a read-me that explains way more then is needed to complete the process.

You’d get better results if you use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion instead.

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

  • Why can't mail import email from thunderbird?

I just for a MacBook Pro with LION. I exported my Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird for PC to Thunderbird for MAC. Now when I try to import from Apple/Mac Mail I only get 1 file per local folder. I'm using Thunderbird OK but want to go to Mac Mail entirely. I've scoured the threads and have got nothing but sales pitches for one time use utilities I have to pay for.
Is this a way to treat a Windows convert?? Please help.

Your welcome. Yes Migration Assistant creates a new user account, that's it's downside. Down the road when you get new Macs migration will be much easier. With a new Mac it initially starts up with Setup Assistant and asks if you are migrating from another Mac. You answer yes and it will migrate data, settings, applications etc. to the new machine and NOT create a new user account. You can migrate from the Mac itself, a Time Machine Backup or from a Bootable Clone.
BTW as a new OS X user I'd recommend bookmarking the following links. While learning OS X is very easy sometimes transitioning from MS Windows can be a little challenging, you're working off of old habits and sometimes thinking it has to be complex. At some point you will probably laugh when you see how simple everything is with OS X.

    Hi Farid Shahin.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described in the following article, in case there is something amiss in the filesystem:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
You’d get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.
Eudora Mailbox Cleaner requires rebuilding the imported mailboxes in Mail afterwards. Instead of rebuilding them one by one, you can re-create the entire index as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • How to import messages from Thunderbird into Entourage

    Hello,
couple days ago I have bought my first apple computer and just now I'm going through the process of learning how to use different applications. For my emails I have been using Thundrbird and I would like to transfer all messages as well as address book to my new PB 12' using Entourage 2004. I'm using OS X 10.4.7 operating system. Can anyone advise?
    Thanx for help!!
    PB 12'   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I assume you know that Thunderbird is available for Mac OS X. If you prefer Thunderbird you can continue to use it even though you moved to the Mac platform.
But, if you prefer to use Entourage, then I found the following article that might help.

    Good luck!

  • How do I mport address book from thunderbird?

my yahoo email was hacked and my address book entries deleted. I have many of these on Thunderbird but do not know how to import directly from Thunderbird. (When I convert the Tbird address to an csv file and then try to import - nothing happens for hours.) Is there a better way - other than a manual typing of all the address entries?
I tried to import the csv file (now an excel file) three different times on two platforms - Windows 7 (64 it) and Windows XP Pro

Open your Gmail account on the webpage, select Contacts in the upper left, click More/Export..., select vCard format, Export, and save the contacts.vcf file.
In TB (or Address Book), Tools/Import...Address Books...vCard file...select the contacts.vcf file. You may have to close and reopen Address Book for the new contacts address book to show its contents.

In Yosemite, I try to import mail from Apple Mail 8.0 into Thunderbird 31.20.0, but it says "No mailboxes found"--what should I do? I've tried all sort of other approaches, but none works. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! Ken

Try copying the whold SD card to your desktop by holding down the Option key and dragging the SD card icon about 2 inches away from the where the card sits on the desktop. This should trigger Mac OS to make a copy of the whole SD card onto your Macintosh's desktop. Once it finishes from there, eject the SD card. Reboot your Mac then open iMovie without launching any other programs whatsoever. Go to the File Menu Import Movies from File... And point it at the copy of the SD card and see if it crashes again.

  • Importing mail from Thunderbird incomplete

I'm having some issues importing mail from Thunderbird (Windows). I have exported them as mbox format and copied it across on my Mac. I then import it using mail and select Thunderbird and pointed it to the correct folder.
It starts importing fine, but the issue is that it only imports 1 email only. I have 2000+ emails in the mbox.
I tried Thunderbird for Mac, and imported it across. It works fine importing from Thunderbird Windows -> Thunderbird Mac.
Then I tried importing again to Mail by pointing to my ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles folder and once again the import completes with no errors, but only one single email was imported.
    Any ideas?

You’d get better results if you use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion instead.

  • Import mail boxes from Thunderbird crashes mail!

Has anyone any idea what I can do to ensure Mail does not crash when I import mail boxes from Thunderbird?
I would love to us Mail but unless I can bring my mailboxes it isn't happening.
Is there a file size limit or is Mail for Mac just flakey?

Could you please explain the whole process of exporting mail from Snow to Lion. I have been trying for weeks on two diffrent computers and I can not get it to work.
I have moved the library, not sure to delete the envelopes. How do you export the  mbox-files ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Export from Thunderbird and import into OS X Mail

    Hi guys,
I'm growing tired of Thunderbird and I want to go back to OS X MAIL.
Problem is : it doesn't import properly.
    Here's what I've done :
In OS X MAIL, I select IMPORT and then THUNDERBIRD and finally select the THUNDERBIRD PROFILE FOLDER in my LIBRARY.
It does work and import emails... but not all of them.
In fact, it does not import several local mail folders I have in Thunderbird.
So that's quite a big problem since i need those folders and the emails within them.
I've looked in Thunderbird for a way to export a clean file, but it doesn't seem like there's even an export feature ?
Anyway can give me a helping hand ?
    Thanks !

    So that's what I did.
I took the files in Library/Thunderbird / ... under my profile
I dumped the .MSF files, and renames the other files to .MBOX
Then I used the IMPORT function in OS X MAIL
It seemed to work and I was quite satisfied !
Until I double check... and realised that a LOT of emails had not been imported, for reasons that I do not quite understand...
So if you know why, please help !!!!!

  • Issues importing messages from live mail

I am having problems importing messages from my WIndows Live Mail to my Thunderbird. The instructions say go to "Tools ImportExport | Import all messages from a directory | Also from its subdirectories." However in my Thunderbird l have tools, import and then it takes me to a wizard which says "This wizard will help import messages....." and when l select 'mail' as the type l wish to import it asks for a type of mail l want to import. Windows Live Mail is not in the list. Do you have any instructions or advice?

Those instructions assume that you have installed [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ ImportExportTools].
    http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html
Or, if you can export the WLM mail to eml files, they can be dragged from their Explorer location and dropped in a TB folder.

  • Import messages from thuinderbird to Mail

I am trying to import my messages from thunderbird 3.1 to _Mail 4.4._ The import procedure suggested from Mail app doesn't work correctly because it leaves several messages without importing them.
I even tried to rename thunderbird's mailboxes to .mbox and import them again but the result was the same.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Thank you

OK I did manage to export my messages to a folder as .eml files, but how can I import then into Mail?
If I double click on each one it opens in Mail (default email client) and then I am able to move it wherever I want.
But I can't do this with all my messages... (1000 emails)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you
