Importing Mail Mailboxes after a clean installation of Lion

I have had to re-install Lion (10.7.3, a clean installation). I have now been able to download messages still on my Internet provider's server, but how can I transfer them from my bootable cloned copy of my entire system, made just before re-installing the OS?
Mail offers to export messages (Mailbox >Export Mailbox). Could I boot on my cloned backup, export each mailbox, then in some way import them into the new Lion system?
But my Mail's File > Import Mailboxes is greyed out, and Apple's Help ("Import mailboxes" doesn't work).
Or could I drag the old mailboxes from the backup, but where are they?
I have a Time Machine backup which will have the messages, but again, where? I mounted TM, tried Mail > Import Mailboxes and selected the Mail application. TM whirred for ages and I eventually had to force quit mail after the SBOD appeared.
Hoping for some ideas.

If you are installing from the DMG, I think so.   However, once installed to a hard drive or flash drive as a bare bones bootable 10.7 system the only time an internet connection would be needed is if you have Software Update setup in System Preferences, or Quicktime setup in System Preferences for updating your software.
You can setup a clone software on that bootable drive such as Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner that can get you off the ground and running to verify that you aren't having any hardware issues with your system, instead of trying to eliminate software issues on a fully loaded 10.7 system.
Of course you'd want two clone backups of your fully loaded system before you tried that.  A Time Machine backup of your fully loaded system can work too, as long as it is to a hard drive that is at least twice as large as the original.
The only reason to keep the DMG version of it around is if you lack the space or funds for space to have a fully installed backup.  But then you are depending on the internet anyway!

  • Clean installation of Lion on disk that already has Lion installed

I want to make a clean installation of Lion on a disk where I already have Lion installed. I then got a message that I have to place the earlier app in the trash. What and where are the earlier version? Regards and thanks in advance for help!

    Hi kajfromfitou:
I also perfer the clone approach. For one thing, all data, hidden files,  etc., you might want to ever access will be available until you dispose of your clone--if ever. And, after you get everything set up, you can clone your new Lion drive over your old Lion clone for continusous use as a back up. If your internal dirve ever gets fouled, then you can clone from you external over your internal partition, and you are good to go again.
Below are the steps I used in doing what you apparently want to do--except that the clone I made was of my Snow Leopard installation. You will be cloning your existing Lion installation. My steps are only illustrative since your apps, files, etc., may be very different from mine. You will need a Lion installer if you go this way. Don't delete it if you have it whatever you do. See the last step below first. You may want to get the Lion version of SuperDuper as a preliminary step since you would be cloing a Lion partition to your exernal drive (yes, you may have to buy a bootabl external drive).
    01. Downloaded Lion to Internal/SnowLeopard drive stopping the installer before it installs (made copy of installer to be sure I had one before moving on)
    02. Backed up Snow Leopard by cloning internal drive to external drive partition
    03. Formatted external drive Lion setup partition as Mac OS X journaled using internal Snow Leopard installation (be sure the partition is GUID)
    04. Installed Office via disk on Lion partition and copied documents from internal to Lion Documents folder
    05. Copied my Picture and Movies files to pertinent folders on Lion
    06. Imported Safari bookmarks on Lion partition from previously exported file
    07. Installed QT 7 and QT Pro License
    08. Updated iTunes and copied user iTunes folder to Music folder on Lion partition
    09. Imported Address Book on Lion using previously prepared archive file
    10. Installed various additional pieces of software using accumulated disks (e.g., Photoshop CS4) ,image files, downloads (e.g.,iLife11) and product keys
    11. Just started using Mail5.0; it just works
    12. Installed Printer
    13. Installed Flash beta from Adobe site (new version now is available)
    14. Copied iWeb domain filefrom Snow Leopard installation to appropriate place in Lion installation (instructions may be needed on this step)
    15. Tested Lion drive and did miscellaneous setup tasks
    16. Downloaded and Installed Lion version of SuperDuper on Lion and cloned Lion drive to my internal.

  • IMac randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7 (??)

Is anyone else having problems with their Mac (running a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7) randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a restart or shut down?
(Indicators being: seeing the login screen even when "automatic login" is enabled, the proper video drivers not loading - indicated by laggy desktop animations, WiFi not working properly, Menu Bar icons that normally show - not showing, etc.)
**Note: I migrated from a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup, but did not import "Settings". I thought this would be the best way to keep from encountering any issues with 10.6/10.7 incompatibility.

Found this answer from another user. THE EXACT THING HAPPENS TO ME:
Its really annoying Apple hasn't fix it.
    =================
    I think i got it :
The progressbar while booting ( booting in safe-mode ) came from the wireless keybord and is reproduceable.
At evening I shut down my iMac an put off my mouse and keyboard. To startup I put on the iMac and immediatly after I switch on keyboard and mouse. In tihs case the keyboards sends some event wich leads to safe-mode.
Know I wait until I switch on the keyboard. In my opinion this is a bug, i can live this way but i hope it will be fixed.
I will know take a look at it while not switching off the keybord, power consumption should be acceptable

  • Missing imported mail folders after Leopard upgrade

After upgrading to Leopard, my previously imported mail folders (from outlook express converted to .mbox) disappeared. I imported again with mixed results. One folder successfully imported but with 2 new but empty folders (at that point I had 3 folders on my mac). I tried to import the second file. It appeared to import, I can see the folder and number of messages but no way to access them. I can't open the folder. I tried it again with the same results. I had no problem accessing the same files prior to the Leopard upgrade. Any suggestions are welcome.
    thanks,
    Dana

I have Comcast email, and I never had a junk folder. However, if you did have these folders, go the preview window where you see all of your email accounts - The window that shows all,of your Mailboxes. Tap the Edit button to the right of the Mailboxes heading. See if the folders are in there.
You can also try closing the mail app and resetting the iPad to see if they reappear.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
BTW, creating a new draft email should make the folder appear again as well.

  • Hard Drive continuously fails after performing clean installs.

Recently I've been having the issue of my Macbook running incredibly slow, when I reform Disk Utility, I get errors such as "invalid record count" and "invalid node structure. I have never allowed these repairs to finish as I've only read that these errors are rarely fixed by disk utility. So I've erased the hard drive and performed clean installs several times. Each time I start up OSX after an install, it will run smoothly for a period of time (it is never the same), the computer will start to slow down again, to the point where I cannot even operate it, and Disk Utility starts finding the same errors.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test, and no problems have been found. So I'm at a loss.
Right now I've just erased the hard drive again, and I'm not going any farther until I see if I can get any help.
I'm starting to think it's just a lost cause.

You might give this a try:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
However, do not overlook the possibility you have a bad hard drive that needs to be replaced. If the above doesn't prove helpful, then I would consider replacing the hard drive.

  • Importing Mail from SL Time Machine Backup into Lion

    Quick Question:
When importing my 14k+ worth of mail through the built in method provided by Mail:
What I was told was to go into my Time Machine backup of Snow Leopard, and navigate to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes, and copy the Mailboxes folder onto the desktop. From there, I would redirect the "import mailboxes" function back to the Mailbox folder on my desktop. As I went into the Mailbox folder I only found the following: Deleted Messages.mbox, Notes.mbox, Outbox.mbox, ToDos.mbox, and there was not ainbox.mbox
    My question is:
I have a few email addresses: one for school, two others for personal use. And within my ~/Library/Mail folder in my TM Snow Leopard backup, there are three folders that correspond to my three email addresses: IMAP-(schoolemailaddress), IMAP-(personalemailaddress1), POP-(emailaddress2), & POP-(emailaddress3). And so, my question is which folder do I import my mail from the TM to the new Mail in Lion because only in these folders do I see an "Inbox.mbox"?
    Thanks!

In addition, how come mail has taken up close to 12gb of HD space when it was importing my mail over from snow leopard when I first launched mail in Lion?

  • Mail mailboxes disappeared with upgrade to Mountain Lion

I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion a couple of days ago. Yesterday everything was fine, but today my Mail mailboxes have all disappeared--they're just not there. Years of carefully filed correspondence! How do I get them back? I back up with Time Machine to a Time Capsule.
    Thanks.

When I click on "show" or "hide," the following mailboxes appear and disappear:
    Inbox
    Flagged
    Drafts
    Sent
    Junk
    Trash
The mailboxes I created used to appear below "On my Mac," but now there's nothing below that.

  • Mail crashes after a re-installation of 10.9.4

I had some issues with my MacMini Server that I had taken into desktop use. I think it had originally 10.6 something + server. I had upgraded the os to 10.9.4 the normal route and decided to do a re-install 10.9.4 on a cleaned startup drive. I did a clean install and then used migration assistant to load apps and settings. Data is on an other drive & NAS.
After reinstall and restore, I did have some hickups with my old data drive, where the user directories are located. I had to run sudo chown to reclaim ownership of the user directories and get access to them.
All seems to pretty well except mail crashed initially every time I try to send a message. It just froze. Then I found a reference to deleting ~/library/containers/com.apple.mail, which I did. This resulted in Mail crashing at startup.

I do not know if these are of any use, but I would appreciate educated guesses on where to start for a solution.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • E72 - Unable to set up e-mail mailbox after firmwa...

    Hi all,
I have a newly acquired E72-1 which has been updated to the latest firmware version 051.018.
I'm trying to set up the e-mail function on my E72 but getting nowhere.
I keep getting to the enter e-mail details/password etc page then…nothing. The mail box has not been set up, each and every time.
From the home screen, I hit setup e-mail>start e-mail setup>start
Then it asks ‘connection needed’ connect to: and I click yes and it shows ‘Preparing setup’…
Then it shows a screen with all the e-mail services, from the top: Ovi Mail, Yahoo Mail, Google Mail, Windows Live, BT Internet, Mail for Exchange, Lotus Notes, Other
From here, if you click on the various choices such as Gmail or windows live for Hotmail, you get the enter user name + password boxes…once these are filled in
You get the detecting e-mail settings tab for a few seconds…then it reverts to the screen showing the e-mail services.
I have tried this dozens & dozens of times without success…no mail boxes have been set up. It just cycles through the setup process each time.
I have even done a Hard reset on the E72 and tried to set up e-mail after…with no luck.
Any suggestions?? I have to say I’m getting very cheesed off as e-mail was the main reason to get the E72!!
Has the Nokia Messaging service been switched off??
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I came to this discussion because google indicated it when I searched 'nokia E72 unable to create mailbox'.
'Unable to create mailbox' used to be a huge headache for me to use E72 for over one year and half. I tried to soft and hard reset the device, brought it to Nokia Care Point to spend 15 pounds to re-install the whole system, or call the customer service line again and again for a continuous one year, but the problem still existed. To be honest, I was not satisfied with Nokia customer services at all. The staff at the Nokia Care Point only cared about charging money. After the first re-instalation when the problem still existed, they said I had to pay more to process other checks. In terms of technicians from the customer service line, they were helpless. I called them again and again. Each time when I called, there was a different technicain, and I had to repeat the situation again and again. They only knew to suggest me do the basic reset, including to try *#7370# or to reset factory factory settings, which I had tried over hundreds times. They even used remote control application to install some remote app on my E72 and did some checks from their ends, but still it didn't help. When the technician realised he/she didn't have another method, they promised to call me back later, but they never did. I was so disappointed with their service. It took around an hour or longer each time I called. When the problem couldn't be fixed, I had to call again and repeat the problem from the beginning again to a new line advisor. It was so time and money consuming!!!! And what was the most annoying was that they were not helpful! After such torturing experience, the problem still existed! It was a frustrating and exhausting experience from 05.2011 to this year 06.2012... I gave up Nokia in the end, though it used to be my favourate phone.
Sorry to make such a long complaint. I just want to provide a feedback to Nokia, so as to let them know that their poor service and products are losing former loyalty clients.
    ===============================================
Right, back to the problem, 'unable to create mailbox'. Finally, I figured out what the problem was. It was a conflict between the device E72 and network provider, O2, for my case.
I am in the uk and use monthly contract of O2 sim card. The O2 network provides three kinds of data package: O2 Active, O2 Mobile network, and O2 Pay&Go. When I create mailbox or use Maps GPS, it access to the internet via O2 Par&Go by default, no matter how I set the priority of the connection destination. But when I changed the access point to O2 Active or O2 Mobile Network, the mailbox was able to be created and Maps app was able to recevie GPS data.
    So here is my solution.
    1) Hardset the device. Remember to backup all the data beforehand.
The method is to press Shift+Space+Backspace together with the power button when the device is powered off. Press until the device is restarted and the main screen, normally it should be Nokia's two hands joined together image, is seen.
    2) Go to menu --> Ctrl. panel --> Settings --> Connection --> Destinations
There, you will find all the access points.
    3) Go to Internet
Hopefully you will have the same options as I do, O2 Active, O2 Mobile Web, and O2 Pay&Go
Scroll to O2 Pay&go, click options, choose 'delete' to delete the O2 Pay&go option. (Don't worry to delete it, as the internet can be access to via the other two options without any problem.)
    4) Go back to Destinations, do the same to Multimedia msg, WAP services, and Intranet.
Delete any O2 Pay&go options for these category.
    ===========================================================
Then, your phone should be ready to set up mailbox and to use gps without any problem. That was what happened to my Nokia E72.
    Good luck!
Now, I feel my E72 is so powerful after the push mail and GPS function is recovered. But still, I am not satisfied with Nokia's service and will definitely not try any other of its products. Nokia has lost my loyalty and I believe I am not the only one.

  • Importing Home Folder after new hard drive and Lion Update

    (Okay, long title.)
Had to replace my hard drive. Was running Tiger.
Backed up my entire Home Folder only, on an external harddrive, before it failed completely.
Hard drive replaced, and then loaded Snow Leopard, updated to latest version, 10.6.8.
    Ready now to get Lion.
    Questions:
    - After I install Lion do I simply use the "Transfer Information to This Mac" feature to bring in my Home folder?
    - What about the apps that are duplicated, such as Mail, Safari, iCal, etc. Will that be taken care of on its own?
    - What about the iLife apps, GarageBand, iPhoto, etc.? Will I be able to update those to the latest versions?
    Thank you.

If the username and password combo is identical, then you'll need to unhide the new hidden user's Library folder, then open both home folders and transfer you're stuff. Do note that you might get you can't do that messages. For those items, move the new ones into a newly created Desktop folder, and then you should be able to copy the Tiger ones. Once done, restart so the copied stuff is put into RAM and is available for your other steps, such as reinstalling the apps.

  • Is it possible to restore iWork package after a clean install system?

    Hello friends!
Is it possible to restore the iWork package after a clean installation? To buy back in the store too expensive. MacBook Pro MB990, OS Lion 10.7.3.
    Thanks!

Hi I was wondering the same thing, I want to restore my MacBook Pro to clean it up and start fresh but I am unsure if I can reinstall iWork agin from my disks? Also will I just be able to go on to the Mac app store and reinstall the apps I have purchased?
    Thanks!

  • Mail recovery in snow leopard from mountain lion

    hi,
i've just reinstalled my old snow leopard onto my mabook pro (2010).
but unfortunately my mail exports didn't include all my mails.
so now i would like to transfer my mails from my mountain lion backup (which i have on a external hdd) onto my snow leopard mail.
is that possible? i would like to skip the steps that i backup my snow leopard, recover my mountain lion from backup, copy the mails and reload my current snow leopard. i tried the migration service and directly copying the mail files ( the folder and the .plist file from the preferences, which had a unusual suffix attached to it so eventually it didn't work) but none of those steps worked out, maybe i did something wrong?
any suggestions? would really appreciate it!

Ok, i figured it out now. Here the solution:
    -close mail
-allow finder to show hidden files -> google if you don't know how to do that.
-open up your time machine hdd and select the latest( or the one you want to recover) date folder. with your privat folder in it
-navigate to users/(your name)/library/mail and copy that folder onto your hard drive.
-open up your current user library folder and navigate to the same "mail" folder.
-from the importet folder "Mail", select the inboxes(they have your emailadress on it) you want to import. Navigate in that .mbox file to the subfolder "Messages", here you can see all your messages with the suffix .emlx, leave that finder window open
-on your current mail folder there is a subfolder called "Mailboxes" create a .mbox file there (just add a new folder and rename it to (name it as you want).mbox)

  • How do I perform a clean install of Lion Server?

There seem to be many sites documenting how to pull out the ESD image and burn a bootable copy of Lion.
What I'd like to know is how do I perform a clean installation of Lion Server?
Is it possible to just install Lion and then open the App Store and install from Purchase without being charged again?

Okay....so Apple does have a guide related to Mass deployment which includes a rough way to do a clean OS X Server clean install. You need to use a NetBoot Lion Server as a boot, but it works.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4746
Use these steps to create a NetRestore image of an un-configured Lion Server:
Install OS X Lion, and then Lion Server. This server will be used to create the NetRestore image.
On the server, install the app named "Install Mac OS X Lion" from the Mac App Store (a network connection is required for this process).
Install the Server Admin Tools from http://support.apple.com/downloads/ on the server.
Open the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application, and install to an empty volume. This volume can be a spare partition or external hard drive. Be sure to click the Customize button and to select the Lion Server software.
Once installation is complete, the server will restart from the newly installed volume.  Instead of completing the setup assistant, press Command-Q to quit the assistant.
Select the option to shut the server down.
Restart the server and hold the Option key.
When the Startup Manager appears, select the volume which you've already configured Lion Server on.
Open System Image Utility and create a NetRestore image from the newly installed (and still un-configured) volume. If you'd prefer to image the volume after it has already been configured, you can proceed with the setup assistant before booting back to the original installation created in step 1.

  • Installation of Lion

Hi I have an iMac 20 inch which is running Snow Leopard.    This has now been replaced with a new iMac and I want to clean off the old machine and start with a clean installation of LION.
I have Lion on a usb pen drive.   Is there any way that i can boot up onto the pen drive and then use Installer > Disk Utilities to delete the existing partition and create a new one, then install Lion, or will i have to install snow leopard, Update that, then install Lion over this?
    Many thanks for any help
    A

That is what I hoped, but when I boot the iMac with the USB drive plugged into the back of the iMac, and pressing C it just boots normally.
It looks as if I will have to install SL and then update to Lion
