Importing mail

I've just set up my mail account using my gmail details, the last step is importing my emails, or setting up a new account.
I don't understand this choice. If I import, will my emails still be there on gmail.com? And what does 'a new account' mean? - does that mean that all the gmail info I've put in won't apply???
help!

Anyone?
I've got the last stage up and I've got to click on one of them!
Has anyone imported emails from yahoo or gmail or hotmail etc into mail (which I'm guessing is like microsoft outlook?) and then checked if the emails still exist where they were originlly on hotmail.com/gmail.com etc etc???

  • Syncronization: How can i store mail for different accounts remotely, and copy most important mails manually to local folders on two devices?

Hello. I have two devices and two accounts, so what i want is this:
I only want to store mail from both accounts in a remote place and copy most important mails to local folders.
(I will be grateful for any ideas as to where/how this "cloud" can be - specially free places)
    * Can I have a copy of these local folders in both devices and the remote storage?
    * Could i synchronize devices so that: when i move a mail to a local folder in any device, its copied to the same folders in
the other device and the remote storage place?
    * The remote storage place will have many other folders. When I open Thunderbird, I also want to see these and the mail
inside, and also be able to move mail from the inbox to these folders.
    * One of the accounts is gmail. In Account Setting tool, there is an option for synchronization. If there is no easier way, I can have mail for other account copied to gmail, and just syncronize gmail mail. For this, how will I copy my present folder structure to gmail. And how can I syncronize the local folders on the two devices?
    Thanks in advance.

The first awkwardness I see is that there's no obvious format in which to store messages remotely such that you can work with them in an email client. It may be possible to set the "Local Directory" option in the account in Thunderbird to point at some remote folder (DropBox comes to mind) but I have never tried this and I'd be nervous about what happens if connection can't be made, or if you happened to access it from two different places simultaneously. The other concern is that mail stores get big, quickly, and you'd be forever uploading and downloading large (multi gigabyte) files. Thunderbird stores what looks like a folder containing many separate messages as one big file, so there's no simple opportunity for incremental changes to be up/down loaded.
The whole idea of Local Folders in Thunderbird is to detach messages from servers, so they don't track what happens on servers. I say this to point out the distinction between files stored locally and permanently ("Local Folders"), versus cached copies of online files ("synchronized"). It's not safe to regard your synchronized folders as permanent.
So, synchronized folders on an IMAP server are "mirrored" in Thunderbird so you do have a local (albeit temporary and transient) copy of messages; this is done mainly to avoid repeatedly downloading messages if you re-read them, and it makes searching faster an more efficient. But these "synchronized" message track what's being done on the server, and so if they are deleted anywhere, all synchronized devices will at some point also see the deleted messages vanishing. (Unless you made a local copy in the Local Folders account.)
I use a gmail account pretty much as you have described; I copy or move messages to that account so they are visible in my phone, my tablet, my own laptop and my works computer. It's free, and it's "in the cloud"; the only reservation I have is its privacy. There are other providers (e.g. 1&1/gmx) who don't seem to have the data collection fetish that google thrives on.
It's fairly simple to create filters in Thunderbird to automatically copy messages to your "cloud account"; even better is to set up forwarding rules on the other accounts' servers, so your messages are automatically sent on and waiting for you when you next login, already in the cloud account.

  • How to configure number of importing mail?

    hi guys,
I'm adding my yahoo mail account into Mac Mail recently, and I have got around 5000 mails in my yahoo account.
When I succesffuly added the yahoo account in Mac Mail, the system imports all mails to Mac (starting from very beginining)
It is too much for me and spending a lot of time and data. Actually I don't need all of them, I just want to get 50 of the latest mail from yahoo.
Is there any way I can configure the number of importing mail for my first time import?
    Could anyone help.??

    Hi,
In MN22 go to the Commuunication tab and there put the desired number of copies to be output like 2 or 3 against the field "Number of Messages" and save. This will get the desired result.

  • I cannot find imported mail boxes. if i try to setup a new mailbox, it shows the existence of the mailboxes that i am looking for in the location drop down menu. where would they be located?

i cannot find imported mailboxes. if i try to setup a new mailbox, it shows the existence of the mailboxes under location/on my mac. they do not show up in the mailbox list. where would they be located so that i can retrieve them?

Did you quite Mail and relaunch?
Your imported mail is stored in a new mailbox called “Import.” To reorganize imported messages, create new mailboxes and drag folders and messages from the Import mailbox to other mailboxes. When you’re done, you can delete the Import mailbox.
If you don’t see your mailboxes in Mail, choose View > Show Mailbox List; empty mailboxes aren’t imported.

  • How to restore email including imported mail

Last night I screwed up my new iMac & had to restore entire system from backup. After many hours & help from the Time Machine forum, I was able to restore everything except my emails. I do have all my folders under “On my Mac/ imported” But they are all empty. I’ve been on with Apple support over 1.5 hours (mostly on hold.) Multiple times opening Mail & opening TM & restoring the date/time I wanted & also trying an hour earlier. --No luck.
Strangely,as soon as I open TM (b4 I restore anything) when it says “Today-Now” at the bottom of the screen --My Mail program SEEMS restored to yesterday with all my missing mail in all the correct folders! But as I explained, doing restore, even rebooting does not work. The mail immediately returns to the empty folder version!
It was pointed out to me in TM forum “In Mail use the scroll bar towards the left to scroll all the way to the bottom of your mail boxes. The restored mail should be there. Restored or imported mail doesn't go into your original mail boxes.”
Unbelievable that the Apple support tech didn’t know that! I checked & see a new “Time Machine” White folder containing 14 blue “Recovered Mailbox” 1, 2, 3 etc. All are empty except three which contain slightly different versions of my inbox prior to the data loss. If it was only the inbox I wanted to recover --I’d simply move the 20 + restored messages into my current inbox (if possible) & then delete the restored folders & be done. But, All of my thousands of saved emails from my imported folders are still gone. I’m beginning to suspect that any imported folders under the “On my Mac” section are stored in a different location & must be recovered differently? I wonder how all the other people who restore their entire system restore their email?
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Steve

This was finally solved by 2nd level Apple tech support. You can read my other post under TM. “Help new Mac user restore entire system”
    Summary:
While on hold (forever) I did check the mail folder (Macintosh HD/Users/<user name>/library/Mail) & saw many sub folders were over 100 MB so, I suspected my “missing” mail was actually there. I was on hold 1 3/4 hours waiting for an Apple tech support “Specialist.” He solved it but, it took him 40 minutes. 1st trying a simple open Mail & go into TM & try Restore from the date I wanted. Didn’t work. Then going to the mail folder (Macintosh HD/Users/<user name>/library/Mail) & selecting it & opening TM & again try to restore that folder to the date I wanted. Again, no luck. He then tried to go into Preferences & we did several things (many of which I cannot recall exactly) with com.apple.mail.plist & I think with another file. None worked.
Finally -- He had me open Mail & import from the mail folder (Macintosh HD/Users/<user name>/library/Mail). That Worked! I now had a new folder “Import-2” after Import. (My original Import folder from my initial transfer of mail from my Dell PC via Thunderbird was still there after restore but all the folders were empty.) Now Import-2 had all the folders FULL of my email. I double checked & then deleted my Import folder with all the empty subfolders & then renamed Import-2 to Import. For some reason most of the folders had sort order wrong & some column headings wrong. I fixed all that easily. Strangely, each folder had some emails in yellow & took me quite some time to figure out to simply highlight them all & open color wheel & select black. So, I am back! I’m restored. The Specialist said that the 1st restore attempts SHOULD HAVE worked. He suspected a preferences problem (corrupt file, no way to tell) He said that the mail was there all the time but, just was not showing in the mail program. He had no idea why TM showed it immediately --as if restored -- each & every one of my many TM restore attempts. As soon as I exited TM I was back to empty folders. He said he would do some research & get back to me. He called today & said that The original system restore that DID bring back everything (except my mail) SHOULD have also restored the mail. He said it was an isolated incident & if I ever (shudder!) have to restore entire system once again. It should work properly. If not I will check the mail folder to see if has the mail & if it does, do an import as was the eventual solution this time.
Total time with Apple Tech Support = 3 HOURS, mostly holding.

  • I WANT TO IMPORT MAIL FROM OUTLOOK TO TALKTALK

i want to direct mail from outlook to talktalk.

Do you mean Outlook, the application included with Microsoft Office, or Outlook Express, the application included with Windows XP, or Outlook.com, the new incarnation of Hotmail/Windows Live Mail?
Does talktalk have documentation on importing mail? Or on forwarding your old address to your new address?
I suspect Firefox is not at the center of the process in any case.

  • Imported Mail Not Appearing

I have recently tried to import mail from a Mac using Mail (2.0.5) to a computer using Mail (1.3.11). The imported folders appear but no mail is visible in the folders. Is there anything I am missing or is this even possible? I have tried switching the mail viewer to version 2.0.5 but nothing is happening.

I don't think you can transfer back to the older version of Mail.
Too many changes between those versions to allow that, one way street only.

  • No messages when importing mail in Entourage X (10.1.0)

    Hi,
I'm importing mail from Entourage 2003 to Entourage X. I select the identity and importing starts. Contacts and folders are imported correctly. But the folders are empty ?!
I do not get any error message but for some reason, he skips the mail messages.
I tried it over the wireless network. I connected the 2 mac through firewire... no difference.
    Who can help me ?
    Thanks,

Do you mean you are trying to import mail from the Entourage version included with Office 2004?
If so, trying to import the mbox format used by Tiger Mail to an earlier Mail.app version under Jaguar or Panther does not work directly without a workaround.
I'm not sure if the same applies to the database format used by Entourage 2004 vs the database format used by Entourage X but it might especially since most want to import the other direction - from X to 2004.
Since this is the Mail & Address Book - Tiger discussions for Apple's Tiger Mail and Address Book applications, you may have better luck getting an answer to your question here.

  • Import mails from microsoft outllook to mac outlook

Am trying to import mails from MS outlook to MAC outlook and its not importing all msgs/ folders..
    adv why??

You're in luck, Imap and Exchange accounts store their data on the server.
Leave Outlook alone, just add the accounts to Mail and let them synchronize, no import required. You can leave them in Outlook or remove them as you please once everything in Mail is done.

    hi,
You have to mark your Mail As EXPRESS mail.
Then it will show as an Important mail and a prompt will be displayed as soon as mail reached the Inbox.

In Yosemite, I try to import mail from Apple Mail 8.0 into Thunderbird 31.20.0, but it says "No mailboxes found"--what should I do? I've tried all sort of other approaches, but none works. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! Ken

Try copying the whold SD card to your desktop by holding down the Option key and dragging the SD card icon about 2 inches away from the where the card sits on the desktop. This should trigger Mac OS to make a copy of the whole SD card onto your Macintosh's desktop. Once it finishes from there, eject the SD card. Reboot your Mac then open iMovie without launching any other programs whatsoever. Go to the File Menu Import Movies from File... And point it at the copy of the SD card and see if it crashes again.

Well, after retrying 20 times, the mail program stopped responding so I was able to do a force quit.  Then whean I reopened mail all of my accounts were there and my old mail.

  • Trouble importing mail

My hard drive crashed last week, and Apple replaced my harddrive. I am now trying to restore my mail from the back-up on my external harddrive. I have tried the Import Mailboxes feature and gone to the appropriate Library file on the external hard drive, and for some reason, once that is done, I can only see some of my messages (through 9/20/06). However, if I actually go to the mailbox file on the external hard drive, then I can double click on the individual emlx files in that folder and open them without a problem. All the individual emlx files are there, including the ones from 9/20/06-2/15/07 (when the computer crashed). Clearly, something is wrong with the structure of my backup folder. Is there anyway to get these e-mails back into the Mail application? It's really annoying to have to click on them one by one!

The Import Mailboxes function in Mail 2.x is broken. The problem usually manifests when converting Mail 1.x mailboxes to the new format used by Mail 2.x, but may also happen when importing mailboxes that already are (and have always been) in the Mail 2.x .emlx format.
I could understand it if there was something wrong with one or more of the files being imported, Mail said that it couldn’t import them and reported what the problem was. Unfortunately, that’s not what happens. What happens is that this feature is utterly broken and Mail simply quits importing if it chokes on something, without reporting that something went wrong.
This problem is not to be confused with the much more common problem of the user doing something wrong, in which case Mail does complain -- usually saying that “No valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found” because the user selected the wrong folder.
So let’s clarify first what is it exactly that you’re doing to import those mailboxes. You should do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X, click Continue, then select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the *.mbox folders to be imported reside), not the *.mbox folders themselves. Is that what you’re doing?
BTW, Info.plist may or may not be present and has no bearing on this. For locally stored mailboxes, that file just keeps track of the column used to sort messages in the mailbox, whether the order is ascending or descending, and whether messages are organized by thread.

  • Mail app crashes when importing mail from Netscape.

I have been using Netscape 4 in classic mode for years. I have a HUGE inbox that I need to keep for reference purposes and I would like to switch to using Mail. Mail crashes when I try to import my mailboxes. I moved all my mail to the newest Netscape and tried again and again it crashed.

You might want to take a look at Eudora Mailbox Cleaner - it can import mail from Thunderbird to Mail so I guess Netscape Mail should be fine as well:

  • Problem after importing mail to Mail 2.1.3

    Hi,
Imported mail from another G4 and all email within the Sent Items folder is displaying as from and date received instead of to and date sent. Anybody any ideas on how I can fix this? It's driving me potty!

Try Control-clicking on the information bar and selecting To and Date Sent, and deselecting From and Date Received.

  • Problems importing Mails from OSX 10.3.9

    Hi there,
today I updated to Mac OSX 10.4 from 10.3
When starting Mail under 10.4 for the first time it imported the mails from the previous Mail-Version (10.3).
Unfortunately nearly all the mails that where in the Inbox of the old Mail Version are gone and the few Mails which were imported can not be displayed. And I only a text is displayed that says that I should connect this account to the internet. But this account is already connected!
Is the inbox from the older Version of Mail somwhere stored on the harddisk, so that I can try to import the inbox again? Or is the inbox overwritten with that of the new Version of Mail?
    Any hints?
    Best regards,
    Frank
    PowerMac G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Frank.
The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
