Importing many CD's at Once

Can importing too many CD's cause your iMac to overheat or something else that is bad? Will it also make the songs sketchy and not as good of a quality if the iMac overheats? I ask because I imported a good 60 abums the other day one after the other.

I could see it causing an iMac to overheat. Especially if it already has a tendency to overheat. Ordinarily, though, the iMac's fans ought to be able to keep it cool enough. If you have a G5 iMac and it overheats for long enough, it should put itself to sleep until it cools down. If it doesn't do that, and the fans are running, then it's probably OK.

I wouldn't think overheating would affect the sound quality. But if it did, I suspect it would be pretty obvious: pops, skips, etc. Since you're extracting the data off the CD digitally, it would either be good or it would be spectacularly bad. There's no real middle ground, where, maybe it would be too loud or too soft, or something like that.

Wow, that's dedication. The most I think I've done on my laptop is a dozen or so at a time. Once I get past 8 or 10 the fans start kicking in pretty regularly. Coincidentally, about that time stuffing that many CDs into the computer starts to lose its entertainment value for me, so I figure that's a good time to let the computer rest while I do something else.

  • How to get many smarts in at once?

How can I import many items at once as smart objects? I went to bridge>camera raw and set "open as smart object" at the desired size. Back in Bridge, I used tools>photoshop>load-to-layers but none came in "smart". So each one had to be set, quite a few. Selecting all the layers and trying to convert to smart object only gathered them all together in one layer one smart object. It was for a collage project. Any better idea on how to accomplish?

I dont know scripting an it was a one time deal, so I wished there was a way, but time passes.

  • Importing several image sequences at once?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no way to import several image sequences at once is there?
I have many folders of image sequences, but there's no way to drag 'n drop or import more than one at a time. Or if there is, the method is escaping me at the moment.

For that, you can use Lloyd's brilliant script called Immigration: http://aescripts.com/immigration/

  • Drag multiple photos to create many blog entries at once?

I wanted to make many blog entries at once from some photos. This is trying to catch up with many entries at once, and make basically photo pages with one photo and more than just a caption (like you get with a photo page).
I did this by the usual method when I first tried iweb (try something, it works...). Then I noticed that it just assigned today's date to all the entries. I didn't want that, so I deleted all of them. Then I found out you could edit the dates...
Now, I want to recreate all those entries again, and I can't for the life of me repeat that initial 'try it, it works' of just making many blog entries all at the same time. I can't remember if it was a drag in, or what...
    help!
Doesn't help that iweb goes to SBOD when I first open the media browser for 10 min...

    Peter...
I have not tried this myself, so I'm not sure if this is what you did....but try this...
In iPhoto, select all the photos (Apple-click to select multiple photos) that you want to send to your blog pages. Then do you see the iWeb icon at the bottom of the iPhoto window there??? Click on it and select "publish to photoblog". See if this is what you were looking for...

You can do it using an extension already available in Adobe Exchange that imports multiple files to different pages.
You can download the extension from the link mentioned below :

  • HT4489 Rather than importing one vcf at a time (which doesn't seem to be working), is there someway of importing many contacts at once, perhaps from a comma-delimited file?

I've just received my iPad, still struggling to get to grips with it, trying to import my contacts from my PC into iCloud.... does anybody have any suggestions on how to bulk-import?
    Thanks

Thanks - that's exactly what I'm trying to do!
It's step 2 that I'm having trouble with.
I could replicate the job of something like (for example) JDOM by receiving all events under the root and creating JDOM elements from the contents, but I was hoping to be able to use some library that did this for me (for example: jdom's SAXBuilder class).
The other side effect of this method is that you drive things from a SAX parser and let the document handler do the application work. Unfortuanately re-engineering the application to work from within a DocumentHandler is probably not an option.
    But thankyou anyway :)

  • Best way to start with Aperture, importing thousands of images at once?

I'm evaluating Aperture 2 on my MacBook for my DAM workflow going forward - right now I'm using the Bridge application paired with Photoshop and Adobe Camera RAW on my PC. I find the DAM and sorting functionality to be challenging/lacking/not intuitive for me under Bridge and I've been using it for years at work and home.
In taking a look at the trial of Aperture, I've tried the obvious thing of trying to import all images on my system under the Pictures directly, but it really doesn't like to do that. I know there are a few thousand in the JPEG directory and a few thousand in the RAW directory, but it still doesn't add up to the 10,000 limit (or was that 100,000?) that it complained about when I pulled up the program for the first time and simply tried to have it import the media on my entire hard drive.
I really don't like using Picassa, but I do like the fact that it found all the images on my hard drive for me, and allows me to do basic searches and image tweaks. There really should be a simple way for a photographer to set Aperture up with the existing (legacy? pre-Aperture?) image base which he's already collected. I have almost ten years worth of images that I want to go through and I seriously do not want to go through each and every day's worth of images (folder by folder) for ten years without some sort of automated process to go through them and pull them in.
Any ideas? Any plugins? I realize that, going forward, if I choose Aperture as my primary DAM and initial tweaker, as opposed to say Lightroom, I'll have the Automator tools to pull down images from my various cameras and place them into projects automatically.
Also, just wanted to mention that Aperture has crashed a few times on me and even, once, deleted my entire Picture library (even though it claimed in the message it would only delete the links to the images, not the images themselves). Luckily, I'm insane with my backups, and was able to restore to a point prior to the Aperture "catastrophe" in a few minutes...but still. I want to be able to trust my programs and it lost a few points there....
Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I think what you're looking for is File >> Import >> Folders into a Project. The top level folder will be imported as a project, and sub folders will create albums within that Project.
With that many images, I would choose the option to keep the images in their current location. (Unless that location is a hard drive formatted FAT32.)
If you have side car files, most of the IPTC metadata will come along, but not ratings.
I don't recommend placing the whole thing into one big project. You can keep the organizational structure you have in the finder in your Aperture Library if you do a little planning.
All that being said, do it in chunks not all at once.

  • Fetching many records all at once is no faster than fetching one at a time

    Hello,
I am having a problem getting NI-Scope to perform adequately for my application.  I am sorry for the long post, but I have been going around and around with an NI engineer through email and I need some other input.
I have the following software and equipment:
    LabView 8.5
    NI-Scope 3.4
    PXI-1033 chassis
    PXI-5105 digitizer card
DELL Latitude D830 notebook computer with 4 GB RAM.
I tested the transfer speed of my connection to the PXI-1033 chassis using the niScope Stream to Memory Maximum Transfer Rate.vi found here:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/5273.  The result was 101 MB/s.
I am trying to set up a system whereby I can press the start button and acquire short waveforms which are individually triggered.  I wish to acquire these individually triggered waveforms indefinitely.  Furthermore, I wish to maximize the rate at which the triggers occur.   In the limiting case where I acquire records of one sample, the record size in memory is 512 bytes (Using the formula to calculate 'Allocated Onboard Memory per Record' found in the NI PXI/PCI-5105 Specifications under the heading 'Waveform Specifications' pg. 16.).  The PXI-5105 trigger re-arms in about 2 microseconds (500kHz), so to trigger at that rate indefinetely I would need a transfer speed of at least 256 Mb/s.  So clearly, in this case the limiting factor for increasing the rate I trigger at and still be able to acquire indefinetely is the rate at which I transfer records from memory to my PC.
To maximize my record transfer rate, I should transfer many records at once using the Multi Fetch VI, as opposed to the theoretically slower method of transferring one at a time.  To compare the rate that I can transfer records using a transfer all at once or one at a time method, I modified the niScope EX Timestamps.vi to allow me to choose between these transfer methods by changing the constant wired to the Fetch Number of Records property node to either -1 or 1 repectively.  I also added a loop that ensures that all records are acquired before I begin the transfer, so that acquisition and trigger rates do not interfere with measuring the record transfer rate.  This modified VI is attached to this post.
I have the following results for acquiring 10k records.  My measurements are done using the Profile Performance and Memory Tool.
I am using a 250kHz analog pulse source.
Fetching 10000 records 1 record at a time the niScope Multi Fetch
Cluster takes a total time of 1546.9 milliseconds or 155 microseconds
    per record.
Fetching 10000 records at once the niScope Multi Fetch Cluster takes a
total time of 1703.1 milliseconds or 170 microseconds per record.
I have tried this for larger and smaller total number of records, and the transfer time per is always around 170 microseconds per record regardless if I transfer one at a time or all at once.  But with a 100MB/s link and 512 byte record size, the Fetch speed should approach 5 microseconds per record as you increase the number of records fetched at once.
With this my application will be limited to a trigger rate of 5kHz for running indefinetely, and it should be capable of closer to a 200kHz trigger rate for extended periods of time.  I have a feeling that I am missing something simple or am just confused about how the Fetch functions should work. Please enlighten me.

    Hi ESD
Your numbers for testing the PXI bandwidth look good.  A value of
approximately 100MB/s is reasonable when pulling data accross the PXI
bus continuously in larger chunks.  This may decrease a little when
working with MXI in comparison to using an embedded PXI controller.  I
expect you were using the streaming example "niScope Stream to Memory
Maximum Transfer Rate.vi" found here: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/5273.
Acquiring multiple triggered records is a little different.  There are
a few techniques that will help to make sure that you are able to fetch
your data fast enough to be able to keep up with the acquired data or
desired reference trigger rate.  You are certainly correct that it is
more efficient to transfer larger amounts of data at once, instead of
small amounts of data more frequently as the overhead due to DMA
    transfers becomes significant.
The trend you saw that fetching less records was more efficient sounded odd.  So I ran your example and tracked down what was causing that trend.  I believe it is actually the for loop that you had in your acquisition loop.  I made a few modifications to the application to display the total fetch time to acquire 10000 records.  The best fetch time is when all records are pulled in at once. I left your code in the application but temporarily disabled the for loop to show the fetch performance. I also added a loop to ramp the fetch number up and graph the fetch times.  I will attach the modified application as well as the fetch results I saw on my system for reference.  When the for loop is enabled the performance was worst at 1 record fetches, The fetch time dipped  around the 500 records/fetch and began to ramp up again as the records/fetch increases to 10000.
Note I am using the 2D I16 fetch as it is more efficient to keep the data unscaled.  I have also added an option to use immediate triggering - this is just because I was not near my hardware to physically connect a signal so I used the trigger holdoff property to simulate a given trigger rate.
Hope this helps.  I was working in LabVIEW 8.5, if you are working with an earlier version let me know.

  • Attempting to import many CDs - getting "disk is full" error msg!!

I am SO frustrated with not being able to add to my library from my CDs, since iTunes can't convert the WMA library I had nearly 3,500 songs in!! I have deleted much of the stuff in my Windows Media library to open up room on my hard disk, but this doesn't seem to make iTunes any happier!! How can I add to my library without having to lose most of my other saved music? Is there a place to open up more space on my hard drive?

While I do realize I should back everything up (and I was given a zip drive, but haven't installed it yet!), my issue is that I have 256MB of RAM, and was able to download the 3,500 songs into Windows Media with no problem. With iTunes, however, I haven't even downloaded 200 songs, and I'm getting this "The disk you are attempting to use is full...delete some of your files and empty your recycle bin." This seems ridiculous!! I have been told by many people that iTunes is SO much better than Windows Media, but I can't get a count on the number of files I have, I don't have the ability (that I'm aware of) to redirect the import function to accept my available disk space, and I have about 350 CDs to import!! PLEASE, someone help me!! Thanks!!

  • Script out many stored procedures at once?

I found lots of methods for individually scripting out stored procedures, but I'd like to know if there's a way to do many (like 100 or so) at once.
Ideally, I'd like to execute something that would save all the procedures that start with 'dev_' to the file system somewhere, then delete the dev_ SP's from the database and leave the other SPs that actually get used.
Is that possible in one step?  Does any one have a link or an idea?
    Thanks in advance!!

Actually, I did slight modifications after that - here is a version that really scripts them:

DECLARE @Test TABLE (Id INT IDENTITY(1,1), Code varchar(max))
    INSERT INTO @Test (Code)
    SELECT 'IF object_ID(N''[' + schema_name(schema_id) + '].[' + Name + ']'') IS NOT NULL
    DROP PROCEDURE ['+ schema_name(schema_id) +' ].[' + Name + ']' + char(13) + char(10) + 'GO' +
    OBJECT_DEFINITION(OBJECT_ID) + char(13) +char(10) + 'GO' + char(13) + char(10)
    from sys.procedures
    where is_ms_shipped = 0
    DECLARE @lnCurrent int, @lnMax int
    DECLARE @LongName varchar(max)
    SELECT @lnMax = MAX(Id) FROM @Test
    SET @lnCurrent = 1
    WHILE @lnCurrent <= @lnMax
    BEGIN
    SELECT @LongName = Code FROM @Test WHERE Id = @lnCurrent
    WHILE @LongName <> ''
    BEGIN
    print LEFT(@LongName,8000)
    SET @LongName = SUBSTRING(@LongName, 8001, LEN(@LongName))
    END
    SET @lnCurrent = @lnCurrent + 1

  • Radeon 5770 - How many VGA Monitors at Once?

I've read many of the existing Discussions on what type, and how many, Monitors can be connected at once to the Radeon 5770 Graphics Card. I still have 1 question for anyone that might be able to help me out.
I have 2 - Flat Screen Monitors (?LCD/LED? Circa 2005)  --- They are connected via VGA
Ill skip a story that is to long to tell, but I woke up with a Win XP DAW (I built between 2002-2003), using the two monitors via VGA Cards/Cables. The machine was borrowed while I was gone, and is now, basically dead, or at least beyond my ability to repair. I looking to replace it with a Mac Pro and the 5770 seems to be a standard in the DAWs I looked into. But, regardless of the Video Card Model/Name, Technologoy has changed over the past few years and I've lost track of 'what' does 'what'.
My question: Will the Radeon 5770, the card that comes with the Mac Pro DAW, run both of the monitors simultaneously?
Both monitors have, along with VGA Inputs, DVI Inputs. I only have VGA Cables and I'm about to find out how much the DVI Cables will cost, though for now anyway, I'd like to stay with the VGAs.
I'm looking for the easiest, and least expensive way, to get the Mac up and running on both screens right Out-of-the-Box.
If the screens need to be updated to improve performance (?), that can always happen at a later time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm at a loss for knowledge on anything that changed, or advanced, over the past 5+ years.
    Thanks Again!
    Thankfully, cMorr

Thanks for the info! Its the 1st thing I read that made sense n thnx for the link too
I may check out the Dual-Link DVI for the bigger Monitor I'll use for Sibelius and stay VGA on the Monitor I have Gigastudio on. Again, just for now, until I can update the screens. The next project will be to get Giga on a separate Mac. I found out they don't even make Gigastudio anymore, but I had so much $$$ invested in the samples sets that it would kill me to throw it away. The guys selling the DAW are trying to push some other Sampling Software and are telling me that they dont have any programs that will run any *.gig files (?) - But that's another weeks adventure on the iNet.
    Tnx again!

i had a question that does importing so many packages does effect to program at runtime time
and what role does JVM plays

importing many packages may impose a compile-time hit, but will not affect runtime performance. (Unless your Java compiler is doing some very strange things)
The JVM plays the role of sandbox for java applications. For more information, read some of the information from Sun's Java Virtual Machine Specification.
