Importing Masters and Versions from iPhoto

Is it possible to import both Masters and the associated Adjusted Versions from iPhoto into Aperture 3?
The manual tells how to import the masters into the Aperture library but does not seem to tell how to import the corresponding versions adjusted in iPhoto.

In iPhoto all images are masters in a sense. When you adjusted an image in iPhoto a duplicate image was made and the adjustments were done to the duplicate giving you two separate files.
When you import your iPhoto library into Aperture these two files (the original and the adjusted image) are two separate files as far as Aperture is concerned. Aperture will keep them together and apply keywords to each to help you sort it all out once you running the Aperture library but they will not have the same master version relationship that masters and versions created in Aperture have.
So when you import your iPhoto library all images will come over, you don't need to do anything special to get the adjusted images.

  • How can I import video and photos from iphoto to imovie?

Hi, I am having trouble importing media from iphoto into imove (imovie 10.5)
I am using a macbook pro 13 inch, early 2013 running mavericks.
I have created an event in imovies into which I would like to import both photos and videos from my iphoto library. However, when the import window opens, the list of options from where I can import has iphoto, but it is not clickable; I can not open it.
I have successfully imported from iphoto in the recent past on the same computer, but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong this time.
    Thanks for any suggestions

  • How to import tags and metadata from iphoto 11 to Organizer

I have been using iPhoto 11 and I have around 26000 photos in my library. I am considering to buy the Photoshop Elements 10 and I downloaded the trial. I would like to import my photos from the iPhoto Libray to the organizer with all the metadata that they have, faces, places .... I have not been able to import that, only the photos and the tags but not the faces or places. Does anyone know how to get my photos and the organizer to recognize the place and faces that I already have marked in the iPhoto?
Thanks in advance for any response.

    Hi Victoria,
Though I'm not very sure but perhaps the way face information is created and stored by iPhoto is different from that in Organizer. SO that might be the reason why people tags in iPhoto and Organizer behave differently. Organizer associates a face rectangle (portion of the image with a face) with people tags. That might not be the case with iPhoto perhaps.
Since tags are written in image metadata, they can directly be retrieved. Infact Places information if embedded as GPS data (demographic latitude/longitude format) should be read by Organizer.
Someone else might give a better advice on this one. I just told what I think the reason could be

  • How can I import keywords and albums from iphoto 5?

I have new imac with iPhoto 7.1. I'd like to import the keywords and albums along with the pics from my old imac and iphoto 5. Photos import, but not tags or albums. Any suggestions?

    Roy
The trick is not to import, but to update.
Copy the library from the old mac to the new one, then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and point iPhoto at this old one and it will update it to a v7 library, including albums and keywords.
If you already have a new library on your new machine, then use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them or to move the pics from the older to the newer.

  • Can I rebuild iPhoto library by importing masters and originals?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 and subsequently lost most of the photos in my library, going through the same disastrous experience as many others posting here. All of the recommended methods of rebuilding the library have failed. At this point I'd simply like to rebuild my library by importing masters and originals from the Time Machine backup. I don't care about losing edits to photos; I basically want to start from scratch. Two questions: First, will this work? Second, will the photos still have their metadata (date, geolocation if available) when I import them?

I have to admit that I haven't yet tried iPhoto Library Manager. I'm fairly certain the files are gone from my hard drive; my disk usage shows that 90GB has been freed up since my photos and videos were lost. Also, after multiple attempts to remedy the situation through iPhoto itself, I'd rather just take control myself.
Oh, that raises another question: Will videos also be imported successfully via the method I asked about?

  • I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000  photos in my iPhoto Library. Can I import only certain events from iPhoto into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library?

I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000 + photos in my iPhoto Library. I see that I can create a unified library between the two. I am wondering if I can import only certain events from iPhoto (like only 2014 events) into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library? Are there any benefits to bringing the whole iPhoto library over to Aperture (iPhoto is SO SLOW for me, I wonder if it is because I have so many photos). Or, any detriment to only bring a few events over?
And, if I don't merge the two libraries, I assume that means I cannot do it at a later date?
Help. My local Apple store has had very few Aperture workshops, and the next one is like 2 months away.

Thank you so much for this information. Here are some responses/comments:
Disk space - it says 114.43 GB out of 499.25 GB free. I have no idea if that is enough.
    iPhoto version is 9.5.1
Again, I am not sure how to know if I have 3rd party software...but I don't think I do. Is 3rd party software anything non-apple?
I will try rebuilding the library. if that doesn't help, maybe I need more memory...? That is what Apple suggested, but that, of course, means buying something else. I've already bought APERTURE, on their recommendation...
It wasn't, and they told me it was slow because I had too many photos for iPhoto to handle and that I should buy Aperture. Which I did.
What is your iPhoto version? Are you using the most recent version 9.5.1?
iPhoto can handle 20000 photos, no problem.  Your computer can be slow for several reasons:
The most common problem for slowness - insufficient disk space. Don't let your free disk space drop below 20 GB of free space, better more. If the operating system does not have enough working space and the applications you are using, you will notice a very lagging behaviour.
Older or incompatible softweare can cripple your mac. Do you have any older third-party software installed, that might have installed incompatible kernel extensions?
Aperture might be slow or keep crashing, if you imported a corrupted image or incompatible video,  that cannot be processed. Then Aperture will try over and over again to create previews and never succeed.  You could test for this situation, by launching Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If Aperture will launch and work better this way, you probably have some bad media in your photo library.
Another problem to check for is a corruption of your Aperture/iPhoto library. You have run the First Aid Tools to repair the iPhoto Library, but have you ever tried to rebuild the library? See this post by Old Toad: Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Importing Library and albums from an other computer

    Hello everyone,
I just bought a new iMac and I am trying to import all my pictures from my old Powerbook.
What I did is to copy the old "iPhoto Library" (of the old computer) into the "Pictures" directory of the new computer.
This works fine, iPhoto updates the format of the iPhoto Library (I had an older version of iPhoto on the old computer) and all the pictures are there.
However, ALL THE ALBUM STRUCTURE that I created over numerous years IS COMPLETELY LOST.
The pictures are just all together in the library, so I should manually create all the albums again. That is a pain, it's more than 5,000 pictures.
Anyone knows how to import all the album structure from the old computer?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Guido

What you are describing is the correct procedure - just to verify you are dragging the iPhoto library as a single entity from the old computer to the new computer aren't you? That should work fine and converting from iPhoto 5 to iPhoto '09 is not a problem that I have seen reported (I have never done it) - your converted library should be identical to your old library including all books, albums, slideshows (there have been a few problems reported here - be sure you have version 8.0.2 before converting), etc.
You mention importing - there is no importing involved - just quit iPhoto on both machines and drag the iPhoto library across a network, a firewire target mode connection or to an EHD and to your your machine.
You might rebuild a copy of the library on the old computer and try the rebuilt one - although this does not sound like a library corruption issue, but it is worth a try

  • How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto?

How can I remove all photos and directories from iPhoto as if it was a brand new install?
I am new to iPhoto and was unaware of how it works, honestly I still am a little confused as to when pics I am using 1/2 the time, some from iPhoto and some from MyPics.
Anyhow, I am looking to remove all photos from iPhoto because during the migration of all my photos from PC to MAC, somehow my timeline became messed up and all my photos that have been logged my dates since 1998 are now all messed up.
Although all my year folders are still in tact, IE 1998-2006, the subfolders and like pics are all intertwined somehow.
And when I search iPhoto for a given year, photos from 2,4, 8 yrs back show up in 2006.
Anyhow, I have selected and deleted all photos and folders within iPhoto, and then import the desired photos from MyPics, only to have the photos double up in the library. ( The old ones that should be deleted and the new imports)
I simply don't get it, they fill the trash and disappear when it's emptied, then reappear when iPhoto re-opens!
    Can someone help????
I have completely reworked all my photos so that they are all in the correct folders outside of iPhoto, and now I want to import those and only those pics with that file structure.
    IE Structure = YEAR > MONTH > DAY ( or if needed) > DAY/EVENT

Do you want to remove the existing full sized image files also? If so then just drag the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder to the Trash and empty it. But be warned you'll lose all of your image files.
You are dragging the files to the iPhoto Trash bin and then using the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu, right?
In copying your photos to myspace and then back the original capture date may not be retained and then either the created date or modified date will be used by iPhoto. If the files in the current library are the originals from your camera then those have the best chance of retaining the correct Captured Date. You can check that out by dragging the Originals folder from your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and then trash what remains of the iPhoto Library folder. Then launch iPhoto and it will ask you to create an new library. Then import that Originals folder and it's subfolders by dragging it into iPhoto's open window. You'll keep the same rolls that was. The roll dates may change but you can check the captured date of the files by using the calendar in the Source pane.
You won't be able to keep your folder structure within iPhoto. Each outside folder will result in a roll with the same title as the folder. You'll be able to create folders in the Source pane to put albums inside. You can create a smart album to include all photos in a certain date range, line one month.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • How can I import video and sound from my sony camcorder?

I have just bought the mac.  I'm struggling to import video AND sound from my Sony DCR-SR87 hard disk handycam camcorder.  From what I've read already, I ended up purchasing and downloading Quicktime MPEG2, and used the Utility MPEG Component Lion from downloaded MPEG Streaming 1.9.3b6 to enable video and sound to play on the computer directly from the camcorder.  The problem is that when I import these clips using iphoto (it pops up when I connect the camcorder), the sound does not accompany the video onto the computer.  I've hit something of a brick wall and would really appreciate any help.

sir; i can't import song and videos from pc to my iphone pls help me

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple - if you would like help then you will need to provide more information than 'can't import' e.g. how are trying to sync content and what happens when you do it ?
You have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer, and your phone appears in it when it's connected to your computer ? If not then see if this troubleshooting page helps : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
You should be able to sync music and films/TV programmes by selecting your phone on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar via control-S on a PC) and then using the tabs on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to select and sync your content
Is that how you are trying to do it and it's not working ?
If you haven't synced your phone to that computer before then you may also find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Exporting masters and versions

I am trying to export photos from Aperture to an external drive just as jpegs and raws, not as library. So first I exported versions, now I am exporting masters and trying to put them to the same folders (to keep all versions of the same photo together) and it turns out that Aperture gave the same names to masters and versions which makes it impossible to save them to the same folder. Any advice here?...

    JaneTsv wrote:
By the way - Aperture creates thousand os versions for the same photo. Is there a way to delete duplicates after exporting (it gives them different names)?
?!? No it doesn't. Where are these thousands of Versions coming from? Are they from 'create new versions when making adjustments' which you can turn off? Are new Versions appearing when you export? This statement doesn't make sense.
    JaneTsv wrote:
I see... Looks like apple did their best to keep people from moving from Aperture to other programs...
Step 1. Select all Versions in the Library.
Step 2. Export Versions using a Project Name subfolder format.
Step 3. Export Masters using a Project Name subfolder format.
There is no step 4. That's all there is to it.
You end up with a Finder folder for each Project, containing both the Master files, plus Versions in whatever file format you chose.
If you're having huge problems with lots of duplicate Masters from Aperture exporting a copy for each Version, it's still only a three step process:
Step 1. Select all Versions in the Library.
Step 2. File>Relocate Masters... using the Project Name subfolder format. This will move all the Masters out of the Library package and into a regular folder structure.
Step 3. Export Versions using a Project Name subfolder format into the same top-level folder.
Again, no step 4, you're done.
