Importing messages from Outlook Express on a PC to Mail

I just spent a long time looking through posts to find a way to do this, and still had difficulties, until finding this link:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040325164915651
on one of the posts.
Actually it is simpler than described on that link, presumably because it's a couple of years old and the software has improved.
All you need to do now is Copy-Paste all the emails from each OE folder into a new folder you create on your desktop (OE lets you do this. So you make an Inbox folder, Sent folder, etc). Copy those folders over from PC to Mac (eg using a Fat32 formatted external drive) , then drag & drop those files one folder at a time into a Subfolder that you create in Entourage. (ie you make a new Inbox, Sent etc subfolder) Then Mail will import these folders from Entourage by itself using Import.
You need to have Entourage (part of Office) to do this.
cheers

Since you have a new Mac, you can create a .Mac trial account for free which is good for 60 days I believe.
A .Mac type account with Apple's Mail application is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
When creating a .Mac account with the Mail.app, the default account type provided is .Mac but you can also select IMAP or POP as the account type.
You can create a .Mac account as an IMAP or POP account with a different email client on a Mac or Windows PC.
After creating your .Mac trial account as a .Mac or IMAP account with Mail on your Mac, you can create the account as an IMAP account with Outlook Express on your Windows PC.
After doing so, copy messages from the POP account's Inbox mailbox to .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and the same for the POP account's Sent mailbox to your .Mac account's Sent mailbox.
Launch Mail on your Mac and these messages will be available in your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox.
Create two "On My Mac" location mailboxes in Mail - one for transferred Inbox messages and one for the transferred Sent messages.
Transfer these messages from your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox to the appropriate user created "On My Mac" mailboxes which are stored locally on the hard drive. This process will save the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and remove the messages from the server at the same time.
A .Mac trail account has limited server storage space so if the Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox for this POP account in OE on your PC exceeds the server storage limit for a .Mac trail account, you must do this in stages and although this may sound involved, it really isn't and overall is probably the easiest and fastest way to do so.

I would like to be able to import her existing Mail Boxes from OE on the old iMac to Mail on the eMac.
Can anyone indicate which files must be transferred from the iMac to the eMac in order for me to import them into Mail ?

  • Can't import emails from outlook express into mail

Just bought a macbook, I'm new into MAC, I'm a MAC ROOKIE. I'm trying to import my email from my microsoft outlook express to my MAC MAIL, I followed the instructions to import from outlook but when I locate the outlook files for my emails (they have extension .dbx but it won't let me select the files. Besides in the outlook folder there are dozens of files (1 per email subfolder). What am I doing wrong that I can't import the emails, nor the address book?
    Thxs!!!
    Avecesar

Pay attention to the information Mail displays during the import process. It could be that it wants you to select the folder that contains the files to be imported, rather than the files themselves.
EDITED: Now that I've read your post again, I don't think you're going to be able to do this on your MacBook, as importing from Outlook Express requires that application to be running in the "Classic" environment, which isn't available for Intel-based Macs.
Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about how importing from Outlook Express is supposed to work, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

  • Exporting Messages from Outlook Express

Can anyone advise how to export my messages from OE in a comma separated values file (csv)? Alternatively, I could work with a tab delimited file if someone can help with this.
    I'm using OE 5.0.6 with OS 9.2.2.
    Many thx!

    Jeff,
    Welcome to discussions.
If you can help us by telling us what you plan to do with the messages, we may be able to provide some suggestions. Tab-delimited and CSV is a pretty dodgy format for email content. There are a host of other email applications (many free) that are only too willing to read all your mail from OE and import it into their mail database. They may then have some output options, ie. XML, which I think is 1,000,000x more preferable than CSV.
Are you planning to import the email into some FileMaker / AppleWorks or HyperCard database ?
I've had to do this more than a few times, from MS Mail (Win 3.1) to OE (OS8) to Lotus Notes (WinNT) to OE (OS9) to Outlook (W2K) to Entourage (OSX), and back again, sometimes. I've tried all the other options available to me, ie. OSX Mail as an intermediate step for some tricky conversions.
Any info you can provide about what you want to achieve will help.

  • Trouble importing messages from Outlook 2000 to mail on MacBook

I have been trying for two days to import my messages and message folders from Outlook 2000 to the mail program in my new MacBook (Leopard OS).
I purchased the O2M program with which I was able to import my contacts and lists. However, every time I tried (about 5 times) to import the messages, I'd see the mailbox "Imported" listed but it was empty. After much searching I saw a posting about clicking "rebuild" which purportedly would restore the folders and messages - the "rebuild" function is not available (grayed out).
Then I downloaded Eudora to my XP laptop, imported the Outlook files to it, transferred the required files to the Mac, and used the Eudora Mailbox Cleaner (following the instructions found online) and I get the same result - I see the "Imported" mailbox, but the "rebuild" function is not available.
I'm sure I could try downloading Thunderbird and doing this all over again but it seems to me I'd just run into the same problem as with the O2M program and Eudora. I feel like there must be some simple thing I'm missing (even though I've followed the O2M instructions, the Eudora Mailbox Cleaner instructions, and some other suggestions).
Oh, and since I didn't want the Windows for Mac version of Office, I deleted the trial version so now I don't have Entourage to try importing into there first! If I'd only known......... that probably would have worked best. Does anyone know if that is on either of the installation discs that come with the MacBook?
Simply forwarding all those emails isn't an option. My ISP does not have an IMAP server, so that's not an option, either (unless I can use a .mac mail account maybe? That just occurred to me....)
At any rate, I seriously would love some suggestions/help as I'm going NUTS trying to get this done! What a mess.
    TIA -
    jsjazz

Well, I can use my .mac mail account to upload from my XP laptop, and use that .mac account on the MacBook to move the messages - - - it's just going to take forever (sigh). If anyone comes up with a quicker solution I'd be thrilled........

  • Transfering mailbox from Outlook Express on MacOS 9 to Mail on MacOS-X

I have an instance of MS Outlook Express running on a MacOS 9 PowerMac G3. I want to transfere the mailbox (all archived e-mails and the mailbox folder structure) to a new computer, a current iMac running MacOS-X and Mail app.
    How do I do this?

  • I can only import emails from outlook express to TB for one identity. How do I import emails for my other account identities?

I'm using a portable version of Thunderbird because I want to use TB to collect emails for a few different accounts that I have scattered on different machines.
For example I have [email protected] on machine one and machine two. [email protected] is also on machines one and two.
After setting up accounts one and two in the portable app I can only import the messages for account one. I have tried many times over the last two days. Thunderbird does not want to import the messages for account two.
What do I need to do to import emails for multiple accounts into Thunderbird?

Does [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_from_Outlook_Express#Importing_more_than_one_Outlook_Express_identity this method] for identities apply to your setup?
Keep in mind also that OE messages are eml files that can be dragged directly from Explorer to a TB folder, e.g. one created under Local Folders.

  • Getting my contacts from outlook express

Pardon my ignorance, but as I newbie to the iPhone I am stumbling my way along.  I thought I had it figured out on how to tranfer my contacts from my outlook express on my PC, but appearently not.  Upon further inspection I notice that iTunes is trying to sync contacts and calendars with "outlook" but sync mail accounts from "outlook express".  It doesn't even recognise that outlook express exists for contacts or for calendars.  How can I work around this, or convince iTunes to import everything from outlook express?  thanks........Travis

Yeah, Sync contact with "outlook" is checked.  All contacts is selected.
Sync calendar with "outlook" is checked.  All calendars is selected.
Sync mail accounts from "outlook express" is selected and both email accounts are checked.
I have nothing checked in the bottom 2 fields the other that says "other" or "advanced"

  • OS9 version of Outlook Express to Leopard version of Mail

    Hello,
I have to help a friend migrate from an early 2000 iMac running OS9 to a current new iMac running Leopard (still to be purchased).
According to MacTracker her old iMac does have Fire Wire so I imagine I should be able to hook up the two computers somehow (in Target mode?) and move data files across.
But how about her email? She's currently using Outlook Express, which I've never used and am totally unfamiliar with. Is there some way to export her email from OE in a format that can be imported into the current version of Mail that will come with her new Mac?
    thanks,
    ncm

I tried installing Thunderbird (and also Netscape 7) on her new iMac while the old iMac's hd was on the new one's desktop (courtesy FireWire Target mode), but neither of them exhibited an option to import from OS9x version of Outlook Express - only Eudora and some other obscure format were selectable from the "import from other email programs" section. I also tried exporting from Outlook Express as text deliniated format (or whatever that's called) but nothing of use was subsequently imported into Apple's Mail client..which seems to hang while trying to import. She's now on 10.5.4 on the new iMac.
Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated. There must be some way of getting her work email from Outlook Express for OS9 and into Mail for OSX 10.5.4.
Does anybody know if there is a trial version of Entourage? Isn't that Microsoft's evolution of Outlook Express? Would that be able to import email from OE to Entourage and then possibly export that to Mail?

  • Can't properly Import messages from WLM to Outlook 2010

I have installed windows 7 ultimate (32 bit) edition in my system, also I installed MS Office 2010 Professional Plus.
I used Outlook Express as my email client for last 10 years, and hence I have huge mail storage to import to Windows7. I’ve decided to use Outlook as my email client now on.
I have successfully imported all my OE messages to Windows Live Mail in my Windows7 system, and now I want to import them to Outlook2010. But when I try to import them from Outlook – it can’t see any messages to import. And when I export it from
WLM, most of the (but NOT all) messages exported to Outlook, but when I open the exported messages from Outlook I see the ‘Internet headers’ are blank for all the messages.
I am digging my head for last 1 week to resolve this issue but found no fix, can anyone help me please!
    Thanks in advance.
    ~Sanjoy

You need to export from WLM and yes, the headers will be blank.  If you have an old computer with OE on it, you can export to Outlook then move the pst to the new computer.
Diane, I just purchased Outlook 2010 and have a serious issue with losing the header information when exporting data from
Windows Mail. It seems that Microsoft recently fixed this problem (partially) which I found referenced on a different site. I went to the control panel (I'm using Vista), and ran Windows Update. After updating both the Important and the Optional items, I went
into Outlook 2010 and imported my mail and contacts from Windows Mail. The header information does now import correctly. However, in WM there is a column which shows you from which of your accounts an email arrived. In Outlook it's called "Category". This
information remains lost after the migration, and the entire column is empty (though new emails that are downloaded do get tagged properly). Can you tell me how to re-import my messages without losing this information? Would using your workaround of importing
the files into an earlier version of Outlook solve this problem? If so, which version should I use?

  • Can't import from OUTLOOK EXPRESS 5 to Mail

I was trying to import contacts and e-mails from OUTLOOK EXPRESS and somehow all my information seemed to be erased from OUTLOOK.
When I try to open it up it doesn't have all my emails and addresses. It's as if it just got installed. I don't know where to look for this info in my hard drive.
Called APPLE and they told me that it could be that it got corrupted and deleted.
I have years of information in there. Any suggestions?

    Outlook 5 -> Mail
You can't go directly from Outlook 5 to Mail but you can do Outlook 5 -> Entourage -> Mail and that works very well
Your mail in Outlook 5 (I am assuming you're running Outloook Express 5.x under OS 9.2.x) is in the MUD folder. You'll find it in Documents > Microsoft User Data > Identities > Main Identity
If the Main identity is empty do a search for "Main Identity" and see if there are any other folders of the same name
If you can't locate it, restore it from a backup, import it into Entourage and then into Mail

  • Importing Address Groups from Outlook Express 5 (Mac) to OS 10.3 Mail

I've successfully imported all my emails and email folders from Outlook Express (Mac) to Mail. The contacts imported into my Address Book, but not collected into their groups. I need those address groups!

    Resolved.

  • Important contacts list from Outlook Express

I am struggling to figure out how to import our contacts list from Outlook Express into iTunes so that we can then move them onto our new ipad mini.  Whatever step(s) am I missing? Thank you & standing by.......

I can't find any documentation but I want to remember that iTunes doesn't work with outlook express.
if it is an option, you get your contacts on by connecting your device, opening iTUnes, navigating to the 'info' tab (the name did change but basically it's the tab to set up the e-mail, notes, etc that you sync)
If express is an option you'll see it listed as a choice.
If it's not then you can always mail your contacts out of outlook, open that mail on your iPad and save them from there. I had to do it once and I could only figure out how to do it one at a time but there may be a better way.

  • HOW TO IMPORT MY EMAILS (MESSAGES) FROM OUTLOOK 2007?

HOW TO IMPORT MY EMAILS (MESSAGES) FROM OUTLOOK 2007?

Into what email program on the Mac?
    Mail
    Outlook for Mac '11
    Entourage '04/'08
    Thunderbird
    Eudora
    ... etc
If it's going into Mail you'll need to do a work around, it's not a "straight" transfer unless you buy a 3rd party application called Outlook2Mac.
