Importing mini DV

I have Premiere Elements 10 and wanted to know if I can import miniDV tapes into the program without firewire because my computer does not have that connection. If not is there a work around, my computer only has USB
Thanks

One can get a good IEEE-1394A FW card for about US $ 10. They are easy to install, and set up.
If one gets an expansion card with multiple connections, I would get one with a separate controller chip for each connection, though the price goes up slightly.
Also, when Capturing via FW, it's best to NOT have anything else FW on that controller chip, and do NOT daisy-chain the devices.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Trying to import mini dv clip from Sony camcorder - how???

Trying to import mini dv clip from Sony camcorder (which I could do on my v.old copy of Premiere Elements - lost somewhere in the loft!) just discovered that this is no longer supported on v.13!!!  Trying to find a work-around but the one explained isn't clear - please could you email an 'idiots guide' step-by-step how to import DV into v.13

The Adobe document for workarounds for DV or HDV data capture firewire in Premiere Elements 13/13.1 is found
Removed features and unsupported file formats | Adobe Premiere Elements 13
If you have problems with the Adobe suggested workarounds, you might consider
    Windows
    Movie Maker
    Mac
    iMovie
    HDVSplit HDVSplit 0.77 beta
Please review and consider, and then let us know if any of the above worked for you. The last version of Premiere Elements that has the DV or HDV data capture firewire is 12/12.1.

  • Importing mini dv to a Macbook Pro

    Hello!
I'm looking for help on how to import video to my Macbook Pro. I am filming with a Canon XL1 mini dv camera and my laptop doesn't recognize my camera. So I'm looking for options to get it onto my computer. I was thinking about getting an external tape deck to import it with possibly a firewire 800 connection but I'm not sure if there are any that my computer would recognize.
    Any suggestions?

I believe there is a FireWire 400 port on the XL1. YOu can use a FW 400 to 800 adapter or FW 400 to Thunderbolt depending on your MBP model. If there's no FireWire on it, then you'd need a Mini DV camera or deck with a port on it. It's been a while, but back in the day you could get a Mini DV camera that would do the trick a lot cheaper than a deck.

  • How to import mini dv tape as one clip?

I am trying to backup some old mini dv tapes.  When I import from fcpx it splits the clips into individual files each time there's a scene change.  I don't want this to occur and would like just one long clip to be recorded.  How do I do this?  Is there a way to stop fcpx from splitting clips?
Any help would be great appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

Thanks Andy for giving the time and energy to try and solve this.  I really appreciate it.
The sorting option is new to me so thanks for telling about that (I've just downloaded the 30-day trial version of FCPX last  night to hopefully address this one single issue that iMovie cannot do so I am totally new to FCPX but it's pretty intuitive especially being familiar with iMovie. This is my first and only version of FCP and will likely buy it if it can help me with this one huge hurdle).
There are several configurations that can be tried for both "Group Clips By" and "Arrange Clips By" but I was unable to find the right combination for both categories to give me the results I need.  Perhaps I've not done this correctly and all I need is the right coaching for what both settings should be at.
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking about for the Inspector view information.  I will try to attach an image of my screen.  It appears that each clip has the label of what day it was shot and what time.  The Master video however has clips arranged completely out of chronological order and so there lies the problem.  Perhaps you were asking about something else though and I'm just not sure what it is.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR THOUGHTS!  It's kind of impossible to find help on this or a complete definitive answer so your time is very much appreciated.  If you travel to McCall, Idaho for a ski trip I will buy you a lunch or copious amounts of microbrewed beer.

  • Importing mini dv movie into iMovie09 with USB

My Sony DCR-HC24 mini dv camera only has a USB port which means when I connect it to my mac book pro using iMovie09, it does not recognise the video camera so I can not import anything. Any ideas? Is it as simple as buying a USB to fire wire cable or hub? Thanks

Your camera does have a FireWire out port - see this Sony article:
    http://www.sony.co.uk/product/sdh-minidv/dcr-hc24e
Sony calls this port iLINK (DV out). MiniDV can be imported to iMovie only when the camera is connected by FireWire (iLINK or IEE1394) - USB will not work for importing miniDV. You need either a 4 pin to 6 pin cable or a 4 pin to 9 pin cable , depending on whether your Mac has a FW400 or FW800 port.
Look for a port on your camera labelled DV - that is probably the FireWire connection point.

  • Audio from imported mini dv footage seems to work in iMovie, but not in Quicktime or Toast

I'm importing some old footage from mini dv tapes using iMovie 10. When I play back the footage using iMovie it plays back with audio. When I go into the library and look at the .mov files, they don't play back with audio in Quicktime.
    I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 and iMovie 10.0.4.
I tried it in Final Cut X 10.1.2 too.
They'll play back fine in VLC.
But when I go to burn them to a DVD, the audio magically goes away again.
    Any ideas??

    Hi
How do You go from iMovie'13 (v.10) to
    - QuickTime
    - iDVD
    I would:
    - Share as file and as 480p (NO OTHER)
    - This file should both play and import OK in QT and in iDVD
How was it recorded in Your Camera ?
    - SP-mode 16-bit audio - or -
    - SP-mode 12-bit audio - or -
    - LP-mode 12-bit audio (90 minutes onto a 60 minutes tape)
To work OK with iMovie - audio must be in 16-bit mode
If tape is recorded in LP-mode - Then You need to use exactly the same Camera when making the Import to iMovie - not even same brand and type no: will work securely. Tolerances are too narrow.
(There are works around - but to do that I use analog-out and an A/D-box with TimeBase correction - to get the best SP 16-bit version to work with)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Digitized thread in importing mini-DV

I am importing from a Panasonic Mini-DV (not HD) and in the first few minutes of the clip (30 minutes total) the image has lots of digital blocks and the like and is very poor quality. Then after 2-3 minutes it's fine. It's not on the original. Any ideas?

If you're issues persist you may want to try LifeFlix, a simple Mac desktop app focused on importing MiniDV tapes.  www.lifeflix.com.

  • Import only new clips from previously-imported Mini DV tape

Is there a way to import only the new clips that have been captured since the last import when a Mini DV (tape-based) camcorder is the source?
I’m using a iMovie 8.0.3 with my Canon Elura 100 and it imports clips fine in Automatic mode when I’m capturing the whole tape. However, if I’ve already imported part of the tape before, iMovie appears to re-import all of the previous clips plus the new ones. And, I’m also now in a situation where it doesn’t seem to have imported the new clips from a previously used tape that I started to tack new clips onto the end of.
I don’t get enough time to sit in front of iMovie to sort out what’s going on, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So there’s no way to use the Automatic mode, and for iMovie to skip over already-imported clips? Or recognize that a clip has been imported already, and prompt whether to continue to actually import it or not?
I ask merely because, given the length of a DV tape, this kind of thing probably happens regularly. And iPhoto, for example, understands when images have previously been imported.
If there is no such feature, I’m willing to submit it as a feature request. However, given the direction DV tape is going (despite its benefits), I don’t see this as something that will be implemented. All the new media have random access.

  • Importing mini DV camcorder movie to QT pro question

Does the quality of the movie that QT pro imports from a mini DV [tape] camcorder depend on the speed of one's computer? I'm using an older 450mhz G4 Cube. Or are the results the same regardless of the speed of the cpu? I can upgrade my Cube's processor if need be.
Is one better satisfied with burning the movie to DVD on a t.v. top DVD recorder and then importing the movie using software like Handbrake when it comes to the quality of the final QT movie?

I can upgrade my Cube's processor if need be.It might be easier/cheaper to simply use a free older/slower dedicated video capture application like VIDI.

  • Importing Mini DVD in FCE4

Hello everyone How can I import a Mini-DVD video in Final Cut Express 4? I'm importing this with an external CDROM Drive and the only thing that imports is the video without the sound. The camera that I used is the Sony HandyCam DCR-DVD108. Is there a way that I can do the same thing when I was working on a PC in Sony Vegas Studio? I'm new in the Apple World and I just can't realize that is more difficult creating a video in Apple instead on a PC.
Please let me know something about if there's a way that I can resolve this issue.
    Thank you

FWIW, DVD is a delivery format - not intended for editing. But if that's all you have to work with, you'll need a program like DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip (plus the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component) to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that works with FCE natively.

  • Importing Mini-Disc into my G5 - urgent

I have a Sony Mini-Disc which I do interviews with. It has a 'PCLink, which has a USB entry into the MAC and a plug which enters into the Sony Mini-Disc (mic. or line out jack).
How do I download the interview onto my MAC, to then put it on CD to be reviewed on any PC? Do I capture it with iTunes? iMovies? any other way?
I have an interview in a couple of hours and would appreciate any help as soon as possible.

You need a firewire to analog converter.
Canopus Grass Valley makes a number of them. From pretty inexpensive to more expensive:

  • Import Mini DVD's

I have a new imac G5 slot loading & an iMac G4 tray loading computer. I hear it is possible to put the Mini DVD's into the G4 for extraction with 3rd party software? Anyone out there have any experience with this? The camera I'm using is a Sony DCR DVD 203. I see it has a USB port, is this USB 2.0?

The iMac's USB ports on the back are USB 2. The Sony camcorder should have come with Mac software to extract MPEG video from the mini DVD via the camera connection. I think it is called ImageMixer. Toast 7 also can extract MPEGs from DVD camcorders using Toast's Media Browser.
You do know you cannot put a mini-DVD in a slot-loading drive.

  • How can import mini DV from into imovie 09?

It used to work with older versions of imovie. Now all I get is a blue screen when I try to import.
I can control camera (stop, ffwd, rewind) as you should be able to do, but import doesn't work. I would like to transfer some memories over before I sell my sony videocamera. Any help?
