Importing .mov files - clips don't show up!

Hi!
I'm pretty new to macs, I've been on PCs for my entire life. So bear with me! I've been following tutorials and searching everywhere but nothings working.
First, I created a video clip in PhotoBooth. I did this using my Macbook's internal camera. It was saved as movie1.mov
Then I went to iMovie and I created a new project. Then I went and imported movie1.mov from Photobooth. Well okay it says it imported it but NOTHING shows up! I can't see any sections of my video I just imported.
I've tried switching the views, switching EVERYTHING I can think of.
Why can't I see the clips?
If Photobooth doesn't work well what should I use then?
This is driving me CRAZZZY! Where is it??

I did figure out how to import from photo booth and its quite simple. All you have to do is drag the clip straight from photo booth into one of your events in iMovie.
You can use iMovie to record clips thought. For your purposes it would be easier. Here is how to do that...
1. Open iMovie
2. Click on the Camera Import Button (left hand side under the projects Library. Looks like a video camera)
3. A widow will pop up. Make sure you are set to use *Built-in iSight* (select using drop-down arrow in the left hand corner)
4. When you are ready press *Capture Button*. It will ask you what event to put your clips. You have the option of making a new one or adding the video to an existing one.
5. Once you select your event your video will be recorded. When you are done press the stop button
5. Once you are finished press the done button and the window will go away. From there you can find, edit and view your clips using the event library.

Importing movie file - transitions don't work?

Hi all, this is my first post. I searched a bit here and EVERYWHERE on the internet, but couldn't find a solution to my question.
I'm trying to import a .mov file I created in powerpoint. In the file there are smooth transitions, where one images fades into another. When I import the file, I can view the movie in the preview window (double click the filename in the Project tab). It plays fine, all transitions are intact. However when I drag it into my composition the transitions are gone and there is no fading. It's like there is an alpha channel that's not getting interpreted correctly. I've tried every setting in the Interpret Footage window for the Alpha channel.
I've done this in several other projects. It's always a pain to get past this part. For some reason I can never repeat the same steps to get it to work.
If anyone knows what REALLY going on and what I can do to import the footage properly, I would appreciate the help.

What version of After Effects are you using?
When you say "preview window", what panel are you actually referring to?
If you're referring to the player window that opens when you double-click a QuickTime footage item in the Project panel, then you need to know that in After Effects CS4 and earlier, this is just a QuickTime Player window.

When searching for mov files, they don't show up in Finder

Okay, so I think I found a good bug. (bad bug). I copied a bunch of .mov files from two CF cards to an external ExFat formatted hard drive. Once I copy, I can see the data on the hard drive. I have two folders: "Card1" and Card2". Again, I can clearly see all of the .mov files if I just manually open the folders. But when I search for the .mov files on the entire hard drive, (for the purposes of counting the number of .mov files I have), only files from one of the folders are found. Even though they are clearly there, and they play, etc. This is quite strange. Any ideas? I'm on Mavericks.

Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

MOV is a wrapper that can contain many different codecs. The message you get is indicative of a distribution codec inside the MOV wrapper. You may need to convert the material to an editable codec before importing.

Hi All,
Let me tell you how I solved the XDV9 codec trouble on my Windows 7 system. The solution is rather stunning because I am using completely free software. First download the Shark007 codec pack for your system here: http://shark007.net/forum/Thread-Setup-and-usage . Please be aware that the codec pack installer comes with a toolbar install option so make sure you de-select this option during the installation process. After installation check the MOV tab on the "Settings Application" program. Make sure "use LAV's splitter" is selected for MOV Playback.
Now comes the crazy part... To convert the XDV9 MOV video clips just download Windows Essentials Movie Maker for Windows 7. At this moment more info about this program can be found here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started . Again, make sure to set the right settings during installation otherwise you will be installing a lot of possible unwanted crap like Windows Live Mail, Windows Skydrive etc.
Movie Maker has quite good settings for converting (High Definition or custom settings are supported). Select your clip, or select multiple clips to create an unedited full length clip of all your clips, and then select "create movie". I used the "use recomended settings for this project" settings as it matches the source file resolution and frame rates etc. It is quite some work to convert clips like this but its the only free solution I could find so far.

Can't import .mov file into iMovie

I have a video clip in .mov format that won't seem to import so that I can edit it. I'm a guy who's worked with windows for years and I am Mac illiterate. Is there a reason why I can't import the clip, but it still plays in quicktime?

to give you some background info for better understanding in the future:
the file extension".mov" is a bit irritating, should NOT be translated with "movie"! a .mov is just a socalled container, it can contain (sic) many kind of media: stills, music, VR...- and for sure video.
just to impress you, have a look in this list:
Apple's list of formats supported by QT
iMovie is an edit-app meant to work with firewire-connected miniDV camcorders..... you can import "other" files&formats, but then it gets a bit tricky....
so, my usual guess, you're trying to import some mpegs (contained in a .mov file, you don't read .mpg as suffix.....)

Not able to import .mov files in pre elements 8

Hi,
Using Pre elements 8 not able to import .mov files ,images stored on external drive (WD)
whenever we import it shows icon in premiere elements 8 about the clip but whenever we drag and drop it onto the timeline it opens the add media window again and if we cancel it we get message --could not locate the some files.
Able to import all kind of supported files images,videos in premiere elements 8 stored already in the computer internal hard drive.
changed the scratch disk, in pre elements 8, to internal c: drive (os).
All the files from the same camera.
Please advice, why it is doing like this.

What type of camcorder did this video from?
Version 8 is generally not compatible with video from still cameras, and this video must be converted before it can be edited.
Also, remember that video editors do not actually add your media clips to a project but build connections to them. In other words, once you add a clip to a Premiere Elements project, you MUST maintain a connection to the clip's location. So, if you're connecting to video clips on your external drive, you can not remove your external drive from your computer or this connection will be broken.

No video (black), audio only, from imported .mov files

Bear with me while I explain the whole process to get where I am, which is that in FCE, I am importing .mov files and they are completely black, no video, just audio. When I bring a clip into the timeline and try to render even a small clip, it is still black.
I'm not well-versed in video so please bear with me:
Steps:
1. I received large video files from a videographer
2. the large files could not be imported or played in FCE
3. downloaded HandBrake converter and began converting files. Kept them at the same size, but they were then renamed .mov files.
4. When I open them in QuickTime, they are black - no video. But when I see them on the drive and press spacebar in 'finder' to play them, I can see the video.
5. When I import them into FCE they are black - no video - just audio.
FCE is currently set (in Easy Setup) to: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920-1080i60
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried converting one file to mp4 and it works fine in FCE, but this takes a long, long time to convert.

There is a 2nd issue that may relate to this: I am trying to import JVC .m4v files and I am getting "File error 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unkown". These files CAN be opened in Quicktime.

I'm having similar, but slightlly different issues.
I have been using FCE 4 on Mac OSX 10.7.5 with Quicktime 10.1 (501.29).
I convert my footage in Mpeg Streamclip (GREAT free program) and set the files to the Apple Intermediate Codec. This makes them work really well in my timeline and I don't have rendering issues or problems.
So, my problem comes when I File/Export/Quictime Movie.
The original file plays fine, but they're 2-3 gbs each, so I put them into Quicktime to convert them to a webfriendly size, but every single time they come out as an audio only file. GRRRR!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I'm missing something stupid.

Cannot import .mov files (from JVC HM100) into After Effects CS6

Hi,
I am trying to import .mov files into After Effects CS6. Unfortunately, when I try to import the .mov files, AE tells me "After Effects error: 210_0001_01.mov cannot be imported -- this '.mov' file is damaged or unsupported." The file works in Premiere CS6. I have the latest Quicktime, and even with Quicktime 7 Pro installed, I got that same result. I would appreciate any advice on this problem.

Your footage is currently a long-gop codec, which may be giving Mocha fits. So instead of Dynamic Link, you may want to simply export the clip in question from Premiere using a lossless codec. Remember to leave handles on the footage.
To get back to Premiere you would then render in a lossless codec. It's not very handy, but it will get the job done.
Give it a try and see what happens.

Cannot Import .mov files anymore

At first I was ablt to import .mov file into iMovie and do various things with them but now I can't. These are just movies made from my Digital Camera. I have a Nikon P1.
When I try to import them I get a "Cannot Import File: Unknown Error" or something like that.
Does anyone know why that might be doing this. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Note: Bare with me I am new to Macs but I am quickly learning...I loved that I switched to Mac and don't regret it.

you will find that there are probably some files in that folder that FCP does not like, in the import dialogue box, there is a choice at the bottom left
"Show:"
it is possible that you have it set to "All Files"
change this to "Standard Files"
If there is a file that is then greyed out, eg. a PowerPoint file, you need to create the assets in a format that FCP can recognise, or as David suggests, get the codec.

If you are using the Casio ZR 100, the video involved would be characterized as
1920 x 1080 @ 30 frames per second (progressive)
Video compression = AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264)
Audio compression = IMA-ADPCM (stereo)
File Extension = .mov
On the Premiere Elements side you have Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 8 (assumed 64 bit).
I have downloaded one of these files from your camera brand/model from an online source.
Windows 7 64 bit Premiere Elements 11. No importing or other problem with video or audio components of the file.
Windows 8 64 bit Premiere Elements 11. No importing or other problem with video or audio components of the file.
Based on my findings, I have no evidence to make a generalization that there is a problem with this Casio video and Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 64 bit or Windows 8 64 bit.
So that leads us to look for other factors. Top of the list is the version of QuickTime that you have installed on your computer. (As John T. Smith has already asked and is awaiting a reply on that. If you have the latest version of QuickTime installed, then I would uninstall it and then reinstall it.
What type of problem are you report
"it worked before but not now"
or
"it never worked before"
What might be interesting to look at. If you rename just the file extension of your Casio AVCHD.mov from .mov to .mts, .m2t, or .m2ts can you then import the problem file?

Problems importing .mov file

I am all of a sudden having problems importing .mov files from my camera in iPhoto '08. Can't get them to import in Image Capture either...On the import preview screen, all that comes up are empty "boxes". If I highlight one of the boxes, it shows that it is .mov file, the size of the file, etc. but if i try to do the import, iPhoto just locks up.

iPhoto does not like very large movie files for importing directly from the camera. If you get it on the desktop you should be able to import it. I've imported 200MB movies with no problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Premiere pro will not import .mov files

Premiere pro CS3 running on Vista 64 bit will not import .mov files. After Effects CS4 has the same problem, it says I don't have the correct version of Quick Time installed. I'm using the 64 bit version 7.6.4 for Vista. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
Now, what is inside that .MOV "wrapper?" This ARTICLE will give you some background on "wrappers." It is mainly written with .AVI in mind, but translates to most AV file formats, including .MOV.
Now, I use a lot of .MOV files and these are all done in the Animation CODEC. Never an issue for me.
One thing that might aid you is the US$30 upgrade/unlock key to QT Player Pro. It can Export as a bunch of useful formats/CODEC's. Depending on whether your footage is SD, or HD, you can Export most to formats that play perfectly with PrPro.
