Importing Movie Clips from External Hard Drive

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere...
I use my Sony SD card camcorder to save in AVCHD. I can import clips through iMovie to an external HD for editing etc. No problems. I want to know if rather than importing through iMovie, I can copy my AVCHD file directly to my external HD (using Finder) & then import the file from my external HD for processing later?
I tend to end up with numerous clips on my card, might be covering differnt events, differnt days etc. I don't always have time to import into iMovie on the day I shoot. For , the ability to just dump files to my HD quickly to free up SD card space would be really useful, but I am not sure it is possible
Any feedback welcome
D

Yes.
The best way is to use the iMovie import screen. At the bottom left you will see a button that says "Create Camera Archive". Press that button and you will copy the AVCHD to the location you specify.
Try IMPORT/FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE and verify that your clips show up. Then it is safe to erase your card.
Another way. Go into Disk Utility, Select your card. Choose Create Disk Image.
Another way. Go into Finder. Create a folder. Drag the entire contents of your card, including folders, and especially empty folders to this new folder. If you do it right, that is the same as an Archive.

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps

  • Cannot Access video clips from external hard drive

I have been using PE9 for six to nine months.  My normal workflow has been to create a separate project file on a 500g external HD. This file includes all video clips (.mov files) and the Project.PREL file.
This worked great until just recently.  I can no longer bring the .mov clips in the project timeline or sceenline from the hard drive.  Using the “Get Meda” command only an “imcomplete” file is uploaded, and when I try to drag the clip to the timeline, the program is asking me where the file is. Something has changed – and I am not sure what or how to fix it.
The image above is from a project where I am having this problem.  The clips that have images in them are uploaded from my laptop hard drive.  Other others are from my external hard drive - and those are the ones that the program cannot "locate".  This is what I am trying to understand how to fix.  Again, this just suddenly started happening - so somehow I have changed something, I would think.
The same clips can be imported when they are stored on my hard drive.  When I try to import them when stored on a video card, the PRE Video Importer opens and I can bring them into the program this way.  However, these are not viable work-arounds for me.
So what has changed – I cannot determine.  Is there some setting, codec, or something that I can investigate that would cause this? As I said, this only started happening?
Also, some past projects open correctly and some cannot find the files – even though they are all stored on the same 500g HD.
    Please Help.

I don't know the exact search words you should use... maybe something like
    removeable drive letter
    or
    set drive letter
    or
    set usb drive letter
Set it to a letter that you are sure is otherwise NOT used... ie, something other than a camera and/or memory stick you connect via USB

  • How to find movie file from external hard drive in imovie?

i shot 29 gig of video on the road. i imported it into my macbook to the desktop. then i drag and dropped it into an external hard drive. now i have since dragged and dropped the file to my imac at home to work with it in imovie, but imovie cannot find any mpeg or any such movie file. i then tried to put it back to the canon hg10. after i plugged in the canon, i dragged the movie folder to the canon and it imported 29 gig. but the canon does not show any new movie files in the video mode. when i open import options in imovie, no new movies appear. any ideas?

For iMovie to see your file, it must be either on the internal drive, or it can also be on an external drive that is formatted as Mac OSX Extended (Journaled). (Not FAT32).
For the internal drive, your clips must be stored in a folder inside the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
For the external drive, your clips must be stored in a folder within the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the drive. Move your files there and then start iMovie, and it should see them.

  • Need help importing HD footage from external hard drive

I have an external hard drive with some footage from a friend. I cannot view the footage either in QT or through importing to FCP. I have version 4.5 of FCP HD. The audio works on the clips, but the video does not. Im guessing it might be a format issue, as the footage is HD footage shot at 24P. I've tried opening a separate timeline and changing the settings there, but that didnt seem to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that the footage is HDV, and FCP 4.5 cannot work with HDV. That format came out over a year after FCP 4.5 was released. FCP 4.5 was dubbed FCP HD because it worked with DVCPRO HD footage natively. HDV support didn't hit FCP until 5.0.
You have options. Because HDV came out when FCP 4.5 was in use and didn't work with it, a couple companies made solutions to import this footage. www.lumierehd.com and www.hdvxdv.com.
BUT...that will get you the HDV footage at 29.97...60i. HDV 24p support didn't arrive until FCP 5.1.2. So you can try those solutions and see what happens, but most likely you'll have to upgrade to the latest version of FCP...6.0.2

  • Trouble importing movie directly to external hard drive

I have an externall hard drive that I purchased for the purpose of starting an iMovie project on it and then importing movies directly from my camera onto it (via my iMac). I have read on the discussion boards that other people are able to do this. When I try to do it, the movie stutters and has gaps.
I traded out fire wires in case it was that. I also erased the external hard drive and that didn't help either.
The hard drive is an OWC with 400 fire wire on it. Any ideas of what would cause this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

I have a canon zr 50, which worked fine before the upgrade to tiger and imovie HD, since the upgrade this camera no longrer works or is supported? http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html the zr 40, and 45 are supported which are the same camera but the top of the line zr 50 which only adds an accesory shoe is not. This camera is not old by any standards and barely has a scratch on it and Apple wants me to buy a new camera just so it is supported? What gives?

    Premiere Elements 12 Mac
A few more questions for now.
Taking your particular .avi files out of the equation, can you import any other format from Add Media/Files and Folders pointed to this external hard drive? What is the format of the external hard drive? NTFS or FAT32?
It is my recollection that AVCHD.avi has always been reported as highly problematic. Yet you seem to be saying that you have no problem importing them in to the project from the desktop with the program's Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets to Expert workspace Timeline.
Did you purchase your Premiere Elements 12 from the Mac App Store or from Adobe? If Mac Store, what do you have Adobe Premiere Elements Editor or Adobe Premiere Elements Quick Editor or some variation thereof?
    You wrote
A number of users are experiencing this issue - they connect their hard drive, load Elements, start a new project and go to add media (from the ext hard drive) using the files and folders option.
Could you supply more information on this via link(s) which have reported this issue.
    Thanks.

  • Import to iPhoto from external hard drive 'importing photos' remains on

    Hi,
When I import to library (from the file list) from my external hard drive the photos are added to my library. However the 'importing photos' from the source pane remains on with the dial rotating! This stays on unless I 'force quit' iPhoto.
After using force quit the images are successfully shown in the library.
When I attach a camera and import this problem doesn't happen.
    Thanks.

    Lockboard
Before we define this as an unacceptable bug, how come everyone else doesn't have the issue?
One key difference between png and jpeg is metadata - jpeg's have it and png's don't. What's the source of these jpegs? What colour profile have they? What Exif data is travelling with them? Have they been processed in Adobe's Lightroom, for instance? Finally, have you tried opening one of them in Preview, saving it and then trying to import it?

  • Import MPEG2 Muxed from external hard drive

    Hi there,
I am interested in the trick for iMovie 08.. I've updated from iMovie 05 HD and ready to import existing MPEG's from an external hard drive.
    They are: MPEG2 Muxed
How do I trick iMovie to recognize and import these files?
    Thanks
    Deb

With a USB flash memory drive, or an external hard drive, create on it a folder named MP_ROOT, inside it create a folder named 101PNV01, now put your mpg-2 files in this folder. Have iMovie open; after creating these files and putting the mpeg2's on it, disconnect the drive from your computer, now, when you re-connect, is like connecting a camera, and with iMovie open already, it will tell you that you have connected a camera etc, etc, now import into iMovie 08.
I use this to import mpeg 2's.
Remember to create this at the root level, at the very highest level in your external hard drive or USB. I do not use a USB stick because my files are very large, I use a external hard drive, so if one does not work for you, try the other one, if you have both.

  • Move media from external hard drive

    External Hard drive to itunes:
I put all my music, audiobooks, tv shows, movies into a separate folders under the "Itunes Media". I also have the xml and database files on my external hard drive as well. I just purchased a new computer, and I don't want to weigh it down by having all that media on my internal hard drive.
I just downloaded the latest version of itunes. I went to advanced preferences and changed the location to the Itunes Media on my external hard drive. It doesn't ask me the standard questions about not undoing this task. It doesn't do anything! I tried to just consolidate and it took a random album and threw that in my music. That was it.
Am I supposed to have itunes look at just the media folder, or the media folder and the database and xml file? Why don't I get the message about no being able to undo the task after I change the location of where to look for my media files?
    Thanks for your help!

OK, you don't get to mess around with iTunes Media as a file name.
iTunes does it and tags it, you don't.
Depending on what you did back then you may only need to change the folder name and then use the "Add Folder" command (Call it 'gramps or something' just not iTunes Media..)
Make sure you have a back up first.
If you really made it impossible you'll have to add folders to music, tv, movies, and so on, one folder (folder not file unless you went for micro-manage in which case it will be one file at a time.) at a time.

  • Move backup from external hard drive to time capsule

I am currently using Time Machine to an external hard drive connected by firewire. I have just purchased a time capsule - is there a way to move my existing backup to the time capsule so I do not lose my history?
    bc
Found the answer on another post after I posted.
    It is No you can't.

You can move the backup, but you will likely not be able to continue to backup to the file that you move to the Time Capsule.
Time Machine will be able to access the "old" backups on the Time Capsule if the file is enclosed in a special container called a sparsebundle.  This can get complicated, but details are available if you want them.
All things considered, this might be the same answer as "no" for most folks.

  • Mp3 files wont import into itunes from external hard drive

I just switched from PC to Mac and have the new aluminium mac book. For my PC I had all my music stored on my external hard drive.I have begun transferring most of it to itunes, but some of the files since hooking my external hard drive to my Mac book have turned into 'Apple Files' which appear to be document files as opposed to music files. Is there a way that i can convert them into the itunes format?
    Message was edited by: KatesM

WMA is not supported directly by iTunes. In iTunes for Windows, you can convert (but not play) these files, as long as they're not copy protected, to an iTunes-supported format.
Short of running Windows on your new Mac and handling this with iTunes for Windows, or using another (your old?) PC to convert the WMA files to another format (I would suggest using Apple Lossless, as otherwise you will lose some sound quality unnecessarily--unless the WMAs are WMA Lossless...), your only other option would be to play the files with software for OS X other than iTunes. In that case, you might consider VLC, which is handy for almost countless other audio and video files anyway.

  • Importing photos from external hard drive.

I had stored my photos on a external hard drive from power book G4(which had iphoto4.0.3).
I recently purchased IMac G5. I cannot import my photos into G5(has iphoto5.4) from external hard drive. I get a message saying you have installed a new version of iphoto.
How can I get my photos back on the new machine?
    Thank you in advance.

Had another idea. Since you were not upgrading a computer to iPhoto 5 - which would upgrade your existing iPhoto Library Folder (database) and since you, I presume, already have a working iPhoto 5 Library Folder -- perhaps we have to trick iPhoto into doing the upgrade.
Quit iPhoto5. Move to the desktop or rename the existing iPhoto 5 Library Folder.
But also move or delete the existing iPhoto 5 preferences file:
You will find it in your Home directory:
    (Home/your account) >Library>Preferences>com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Remove or trash the preference (.plist file) and restart iPhoto.
This will get iPhoto 5 to launch like it was the very first time. With only the backup in your Pictures Folder it will try to open with it and do the upgrade.
