Importing movie into iMovie 8. CPU runs hot but fan didn't kick in

I was importing a movie into iMove 8.0.6 the other day. I hardly use iMovie but I know that in general when a computer render videos the CPU can hot pretty fast. I was expecting the fan kicks on pretty soon but after 5-6 minutes into a 10 minutes project I have yet to heard the fan. I opened up iStat Pro and was shocked to see the CPU was up at mid 90s and the fan was hovering around 2500RPM. It ran up to 3000ish RPM when the movie was done.
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before. I know the fan is working fine before I was just watching some online videos and the fan is already up at 3100 when the CPU sitting at 80C.

Can you open the file in QuickTime Player?
If so, click Window/Inspector, and tell us what video and audio codecs are listed by "format:".
If the audio and video formats look ok, then I would check for chapter tracks, closed captioning tracks, etc. Extra tracks would make the movie uneditable in iMovie.

  • Can't import .mov into imovie

    Hi,
I got a problem with imovie '09 which is rather puzzling.. I would like to import a video from my digital videocamera (Sony DCR TRV 19E) (which has no USB 2.0 port) on my macbook (which has no firewire port). Since I cannot connect the two, I imported the video on windows xp through movie maker. Then I opened the resulting .wmv file in quicktime and I saved it as .mov. Then I tried to import it in imovie but the file cannot be selected (and therefore imported).
I tried to save the file for web with quicktime and then to import it in imovie. It does work but the video has the flip4mac logo impressed on it (unless I purchase the pro version of quicktime). I also tried to use MPEG streamclip and iConvertX 4.0, but the the resulting files have the flip4mac logo impressed. Does anybody know how to fix the problem?
    thanks very much
    Diego

apparently Lacie doesn't sell such a cable anymore... http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10045 ... in any case, as far as I know, these cables do not allow the transfer of video from a camcorder to a computer...
The Macbook doesn't have any expansion card slot unfortunately...

  • Importing movies into iMovie

why can't i import 3gp movie clips into iMovie? I have tried several times to import from the desktop with no success, can anyone help?

3GP is a phone format. It's not supported in iMovie, or any other video editing application that I know of. It's a delivery format. You need to convert the media. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this. What you convert it depends on the exact specs of the original media.

  • How do I import movies into Imovie from my HTC sensation?

I have an HTC sensation.  am trying to use I-movie for the first time.  My flip videos are all good, but the movies that i emailed to myself from my android are not compatible with i-movie (even though they are .mov files).  is there a program that can transfer them so they are usable in imovie?

    Did you try the
Menu Bar -> File -> Import -> Movies
command in iMovie?  From the dialog box, locate and select the movie (or movies) you want to import.

  • How do you import movies into iMovie?

    i have imovie'11 version 9.0.8
want to upload about 40 vidio clips to make a short film
I click on file > import > movies
then when i have found the folder I save to mactintosh hd and add to existing event which is new event
I have tried checking the box to optimise video to Large - 960 x 540 and also tried unchecking this box
    and I select copy files
after doing this I have left for at least 5 hours (both times, optimising and not) but nothing has happended and I have had to force quit imovie
the clips I am using are MPEG movie, dimentions 720 x 576

    I have the following situation:
    Source Computer:
    MacBook Pro
          Snow Leopard
          iMovie 11
    Destination Computer:
    iMac
         Mountain Lion
         iMovie 11
Our soccer coach took another job, but had created all kinds of iMovie projects on his MBP.  This was his own personal laptop, and we wanted the information transferred onto a school-owned Mac.  Tech copied the Movies folder under his user account to an external drive.  This folder contains all of the projects and events for the soccer season.
Copied the Movies folder to the Public folder of the local administrator's account on the destination computer.  Tech adjusted the permissions for everyone to read-write, and applied permissions to all contents within.
The problem is that from Finder, you can see all of the files - the .MOV files in the events folder, and you can see the projects thumbnails.  Double clicking on a project file opens iMovie, but nothing happens - iMovie opens with a blank project.
When clicking on File --> import movies...  you can see the project names, but they are all greyed out.  The events will import fine, but the projects will not.
I need help with this - i'm a novice at iMovie, and would like to get this situaion resolved.
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • No video upon importing movies into iMovie?

I have had my MacBook less than a month and am still getting familiar with it. I took several video clips of my son on his skateboard this weekend with a Casio digital camera. It has an SD card. I imported the video using a USB adapter with the SD card. When I try to play back, I can hear the audio, but am seeing a blank white screen.
    Any pointers?

I imported the video using a USB adapter with the SD card. When I try to play back, I can hear the audio, but am seeing a blank white screen.
A white screen usually means no video codec is available for playback. Most Casio cameras use an AVI file container with M-JPEG video and either DVI ADPCM or Unsigned Integer audio. If you imported these into iPhoto, then I would expect both the m-JPEG/DVI ADPCM and M-JPEG/Unsigned Integer content to play back in the QT Player but only the M-JPEG/Unsigned Integer files to import into iMovie '08. The only question in my mind is whether you are saying your imported via USB directly to iPhoto or that an SD Card reader allowed you to import directly to iMovie '08. If the former, do you have Perian installed? If the latter, you need to check the imported file to see if iMovie attempted to perform some sort of a conversion during the camcorder import process in which case the regular QT components may or may not have been accessed.

  • CPU running hot and fans maxed out while no programs are running

My 2007 MacBook Pro 3,1 suddenly started running hot (CPU-85°C) and the fans are ramping up to 6000rpm for no apparent reason. Nothing but Firefox running. I just downloaded a new Security update. Is anyone else having these issues? Any fixes out there? Should I be concerned? Thanks.

There are a couple of things to try.
First, I always repair permissions before and after adding anything from Software Update. May be overkill but I've never had any issues with updates on any of the family's eight OSX computers.
Second, are you running any anti-virus software other than ClamXav? Most commercial packages create more Mac trouble than they prevent.
Third, use Activity Monitor (AM) to check for runaway background processes. IMPORTANT: to catch the culprits, you have to change Activity Monitor's default setting of "My Processes" to "All Processes." Otherwise, most of the likely suspects are going to fly under the radar. Also quit any apps you have launched. Click AM's "%CPU" column to sort by how much of the processor each background process is using. Let it run about a minute and observe what shows as the largest users. In either Leopard of Snow Leopard, no background process should show over about 5 percent. If anything is grabbing a lot of cycles, post the process name here and we can help you figure out what it is and how it can be corralled.

  • Can't import movies into iMovie

Since upgrading to Lion, iMovie will no longer import my HD movies from my Canon Vixia HF M40.
    Very frustrating. Any ideas?

4-pin vs. 6-pin: Doesn't matter. Use whatever cable fits. Functionality is identical for both connections.
Composite video vs. S-video: If you camcorder has S-Video out, use it. S-video will give you better quality.
So iMovie recognizes the Pyro, but just doesn't capture? Did you start recording by pressing the record button? It won't start recording just because you start playing your tape. You need to tell iMovie to record by pressing the record button at the beginning, at the stop button when you are done.
It should work in principal - if you Google "iMovie Pyro" you immediatey get some hits with success stories.

  • Importing Quicktime movies into iMovie 6i

I'm currently running iMovie 6 on an iMac G5 (iSight) with system 10.4.11 and trying to import Quicktime movies. The movies are nothing more than 10 minute slideshows created in iPhoto 6. The first four imported with no trouble but the fifth created an error screen that said "The file could not be imported, unknown error". . . . very informative. There are still 20 gigs on my internal drive but, to be safe, I created the iMovie project on an external drive with 60 free gigs. I tried updating iMovie and iPhoto to the latest versions with no success. Then I went back to iPhoto and broke the erring slideshow into two halves, before exporting them to Quicktime movies. The first imported correctly into iMovie but the second created the same error code. Since then, I have tried three or four other "slideshow/movies" with the same recurring error.
A year ago I followed this same process successfully to end up with a final DVD. I used the same versions of iLife 6 but, of course was not at Tiger version 10.4.11. My guess is that I was at 10.4.6 at that time.
If anyone has a fix or a suggestion for this issue, I would be most grateful.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I stumbled on the problem and it's solution so I thought I would post it for those interested. After two days of frustration, I accidentally discovered that the culprit was the backslash character in the name of my slideshow. While iPhoto has no problem exporting a file with that character in the name, iMovie won't accept it for importing. This sounds like an issue related to our PeeCee friends for whom the backslash is off limits. What is most puzzling is why Apple's iMovie programmers couldn't flag it as an "illegal character" error. It certainly isn't an "unknown error".
Anyway, thanks for any thought you may have given to this issue.

  • Importing Quicktime movies into IMovie

I have some Quicktime movies that are 868.4 MB in size and when I import them into Imovie they take approximatley 2 hours to import.
Is there a way of speeding up the process.
I have QT Pro and have tried editing the movie prior to import but the resulting file although smaller in size plays back as a green screen.
Can anyone suggest a solution. QT Pro doesnt seem to have a SPLIT feature in it like IMovie.

Why don't you just start the import at night, and let it run while you sleep? That will probably be the easiest solution.
To edit in Quicktime, copy-and-paste works the best. Open your clip, and then start a second blank Quicktime movie. Select the portion you want to use by marking the in and out points (I and O keyboard shortcuts), cut, then select your other window, and paste. Then export the pasted clip as DV stream for easy import into iMovie. Repeat for each clip. Or select the sections you don't want, and cut them from your original movie.

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • Can't import audio from .mov into iMovie 10.0.3

When importing a .mov file with sound into iMovie 10.0.3, the audio does not import with the video. I have no sound. The file plays and sounds fine on the desktop. What am I doing wrong?
    Macbook Pro, OSX 10.9.3. 16G Ram, 768GB SSHD 2.7GHz Intel Core i7

    Hello John,
Check out the first article for some troubleshooting steps to see if anything is preventing the audio from playing properly. Also try using QuickTime to convert the video in a different format and then import it into iMovie to see if that changes things.

I have a Sony DCR-DVD103 and when I go to File>Import Movies I do see my Finalized DVD, but all the files including the Import button are grayed out. How can I import the Finalized movie into iMovie?
Upon connecting the Video Camera to my MacBook Pro, DVD Player launches. I quit DVD Player and go to iMovie>Import Movies, but never see how to import the movie into iMovie.

I have a Sony DCR-DVD103 and when I go to File>Import Movies I do see my Finalized DVD, but all the files including the Import button are grayed out. How can I import the Finalized movie into iMovie?
The "Import Movies..." option is for importing "edit" compatible files from a hard drive into iMovie '08. If the source files are not already "edit" compatible, iMovie '08 will not let you import them. Instead, try the ""Import from Camera..." option. If iMovie '08 properly recognizes you DVD camcorder, it will import your MPEG2/AAC content by converting all MPEG-2 "P" and "B" frames to "I" frames (which are editable), convert the AC3 audio to AIFF, and place both in an MOV file container with start and/or end time offsets to minimize drift between audio and video. The resulting file can then be edited in iMovie '08.
If the camcorder is not recognized by iMovie '08, then you will probably have to import the MPEG2/AC3 files to you hard drive and manually convert them to an edit compatible compression format manually using an MPEG-based, third-party conversion application like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free but requires $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component), FFmpegX, (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware), or similar application.
