Importing Movies into iTunes on Mac

I am trying to import a movie into to my iTunes so I can put it on my iPod, how can I import it when it just opens automatically? Anyone know?

What kind of movie?
From where?
Copying commercial/store bought dvd's is not legal ( breaking the encryption, which is needed to copy the dvd is illegal).

    Hello,
how can I import movies into itune. I have tried it with many formates but i doesen´t work and it doesn´t convert.
    Thanks

If they are your own private vdieos, it's fine to import them. They need to be in the right format i.e. Quickitme format or MPEG4.
If the are not you need to convert them, here is a link to a free converter, I have not tried it myself so can not vouch for its quality:

  • Importing movies into iTunes 11

I'm trying to import a few movies into iTunes.  I used HandBrake to rip them (used AppleTV preset).  Previously, I've imported them by going to Add to Library. But this time it isn't working...  I also tried to drag and drop into iTunes (as per another thread).  When I checked the iTunes Media folder (in home movies) all the movies are there, but they don't show up in Library.  What am I doing wrong?   The only thing I've done differently this time was using the Apple TV preset, previously I've used Regular Normal - could that be the issue????

I was having the same problem today with a m4v file. After a bit of searching around I found that manually putting it in iTunes' "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder did the trick. All of my earlier attempts to drag the movie into iTunes showed up as well (in the Home Movies category). I deleted the extra copies and added my own meta data.
    Found on this site: http://johandry.blogspot.com/2013/01/digitalize-dvds-with-handbrake-for.html
" just copy the movie to the folder 'iTunes Media/Automatically Add to iTunes' located in the iTunes Library folder, usually in the /Users/username/Music folder but you may have it in other location even in an external hard drive. "

Here i am using Ipod touch, nw i am trying to add the movies into itunes but nothing is happening when i drag the movie into itubes and even added also.
Can anyone help me on this.

Looking on the web I found that the Graboid video content needs converting. Itunes will accept mp4 or m4v.

  • Import movie into iTunes

Probably simple but i don't know how to do it.
Made a video and put it on dvd of my kid - deleted it from my mac, now I want to import it to iTunes so it can be synced to my kids iPod.
I need to be walked through the steps to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

First you need to get the movie on your DVD into a iPod format:
    - RIP the movie file from the DVD using Handbrake (or some similar app). In Handbrake, you make sure the output file is for iPod (or whatever format you may want)
Once the movie is ripped from the DVD, you can then drag it onto the iTunes icon (or onto iTunes' window), and iTunes will import the movie.
Then, with your iPod connected, under its Movies tab (in iTunes), make sure it will sync with the iPod. Click sync an enjoy.

Is there a way to import a movie (a DVD I purchased) into iTunes so I can synch it to my iTouch?

I'm afraid that importing of commercial DVDs can't be discussed on the forum as that involves breaking the encryption on them (which is illegal in most countries). If your discs don't have a digital copy then there's no advice that can be given. Such discussions are against the Forum's terms of use. • HT3775 How do I import movies into iTunes

We used Handbrake to compress out own movie so we could add it to itunes and when I try to drag and drop the movie into "Movies" on itunes it won't let me...

Try "google" for iPod video converters. I know one of the pieces of software for PC's is Videora, other than that "google" is your best bet.

  • Import movies into itunes

    Hello,
I have a hard drive of 2 teras full of 1080p movies.
I tried to drag and drop in itunes, "add to library", nothing is working, they don't appear in my itunes library..
I'm pretty much frustrated, this worked perfectly with my mp3 collection, most of them have been recognize in itunes match, which is allowing me to easily use them either on my iphone or ipad.
Does anyone can explain what's wrong with the movies ??..
    Thanks
    George

That's the problem. MKVs are not supported in iTunes.
However :-) I use VLC Media player to play MKV files and it works great. The iPhone/iPad version has also been released I believe if you wanted to get your files mobile. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html
Are these full-quality MKV rips (i.e. 20Gb + per film)?
BTW, if you need to do any more converting, I wouldn't pay anybody to do it. Buy yourself an external Blu-Ray, use MakeMKV (free) to convert from Blu-Ray (full quality MKV files, but massive)
Handbrake to rip to a Full-HD iTunes compatible file (roughly down to 5-6 Gb and still perfect HD quality)
I then finish it off with an app called Subler that adds all the artwork and metadata to make it look and feel as if it had been bought from iTunes :-)

  • Why cant i import movies into iTunes?

please answer me im really frustrated

The only format acceptable by iTunes for iPhone or iPad are m4v and mp4.
You may play mpg in iTunes but not in the Devices.  Other formats like AVI, WMV, FLV, RMVB, etc are all not playable in iTunes.

  • Can I rip a DVD and import it into iTunes?

Can you import movies into iTunes from a DVD, like you can music from a CD?

If you are talking about commercial DVDs, we can't help you here. Commercial DVDs are encrypted. In order to copy the DVD, you'd need to break that encryption which is illegal in the U.S. (and, I think, in Canada). Because it's illegal, the terms of use of this forum prohibits discussion of software or methods.
    Sorry.

I know this is an old thread, but I've been researching ripping my Laserdiscs to my Mac.  Did you ever get it worked out?  I've been reading here about the Grassvalley ADVC300 to capture and convert analog video to digital.  Still learning about it.  Also, here's a wiki that has a lot of information about ripping laserdiscs:

  • I'm using Windows 8.  I have 2 folders in my videos library - movies and personal videos.  When I try to import a movie into iTunes, it puts it in the Home Video section and if I import a personal video, it puts it into the home video section.  what up?

Im using Win8.  I originally had all my ripped movies in a movie folder listed in the videos library.  This imported into iTunes movies with no issue.  I later added a second folder t my library - personal videos where i put all my home videos.  I was able to import this into iTunes and it showed up in "Home Movies" - very cool and exactly what I wanted.  Now, if I add a new ripped movie and put it in my movie librairy and try to import it into iTunes, it places it in Home Movies.  And if I put a new personal video, it will also import into iTunes under 'Home Video?.  What is going on here??  Any help would be greatly appreciated - it seems like this is a bug in iTunes 11.

I thank you for the response.  Apple does some assinine things sometimes and this is one of them.  Ask the planet the difference between a movie and a home video and with the exception of Apple, you'd get 100% consenus on the what difference is.  A home video is something that I shoot, like my kids birthday party.  A movie is something I urchased either via download or a DVD that I ripped.  Unbelievable!   The fact that Apple has chosen not to distinguish based upon which folder I tell it is Movies and which folder is Home Videos is really hard to fathom - sounds like something Windows would do. I find it funny that in my iTunes movies sub-section of the movies section, the movie icons have a cloud icon in upper right corner to distinguish it as bought from Apple iTunes versus no cloud icon for movies that I have ripped - so the distintion was already made and clearly visible.  Now - everything just defaults to "home videos" if I try to import a new ripped DVD - why even bother to have this distinction on the iTunes bar?  WOW!
As for your direction, I do not understand what you are telling me - what Media Kind and what Options tab are you referring to?  I see no Options tab in iTunes.  Right licking on the movie icon does not yield media kind or options as well.  Gping to the source file does not yield these options either.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I recently downloaded a movie with an avi extension, I changed it to .m4v and then tried to import it into iTunes but never goes through the importing process and it never shows up.

I recently downloaded a movie with an avi extension, I changed it to .m4v and then tried to import it into iTunes but never goes through the importing process and it never shows up.

    That WON'T convert it.
If I do the same with an MP3 and change the extension to JPG, it DOESN'T make it a picture. It makes it unusable.
Change it back to AVI and download "Handbrake". http://handbrake.fr/
Use HandBrake to "convert" it to M4V.
