Importing MPEG 2 into iMOvie

hi folks, I was wondering if anyone has yet imported MPEG2 files from a DVD handycam into iMovie?
Is there any noticeable difference in this format than with the old mini-DV format as I am considering upgrading to a 3-chip DVD video camera...and am in research mode before taking the next step
any advice or suggestions would be welcomed
many thanks
Tony

Hi e
Copy from Karsten S:
.. and here the complete 'full 9 yards' ... :
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
* VisualHub (23.32$)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Importing mpegs into imovie

    Trying to figure out how to import movie clips from my sony cybershot digital camera into iMovie. The files are mpeg's. When I try to import them into iMovie it won't allow it, although when I imported AVI files from my Cannon digital camera it worked fine.
    Is mpeg streamclip going to help me here?
    Thanks

    Hi Tim:
    Yes, Streamclip will help you.
    BTW-the latest version is now available. look at what Matti has to say about it!

  • No sound after importing mpeg from imovie

    Hello, i'm new to IMovie and i have the problem that all my video files made with my photocamera loose the sound when i import them into Imovie. the FAQ's tell me it is because they are in mpef-muxed structure. Can anybody help me with the solution on HOW to get my movies with sound into Imovie ???

    I have exactly the same problem and took your advice, downloading MPEG stream clip. But it is not clear to me how to do this.
    Previously I dragged the MPEG clips from iPhoto ( which played fine in QT with sound) into my iMovie and there was no sound ( as the OP describes).
    So if you could spell out the exact procedure, I would be most grateful

  • Can't import videos into iMovie

    Hello, there!
    I just captured a few videos with my screen capture app on my windows laptop. After I transferred them onto my iMac and converted them into .mp4 files i wanted to import them into iMovie but when i selected them only video 4 and 6 out of 6 videos imported into iMovie. i don't know whats the problem when i try again to import the other videos he is loading for like 1 second and nothing happens. i have already tried to restart iMovie and have also restarted my mac.
    Also, this is not the first time something like this happens. but last time the problem just disappeared after a few retries...
    please help! i want to upload them to youtube as soon as possible!

    iMovie uses QuickTime file formats or DV Stream files directly from a camcorder.
    If your files don't open or play properly in QuickTime Player they will not "import" into iMovie.
    If you're authoring on a PC you must keep this basic fact as part of your your export scheme.
    iPod videos are usually 320X240 and will not look good when scaled up to DV dimensions. Some use 480 width MPEG-4 video codecs that could scale but you may not be happy with the results.
    Most Windows exports use Windows only codecs and this is the reason you're not seeing the video. Try exporting as a DV format (blah.dv) from Movie Maker. It may only appear as an option export to .AVI using those codecs.

    How can I import video into iMovie from a DVD?
    Thanks,

    You can do this with a free app called MPEG Streamclip and a $20 quicktime component from Apple.

  • How to Import .3g2 into iMovie '09?

    My friend filmed a video on his cell phone and emailed it to me. I'd like to import it into iMovie for editing but it will not drag in or allow me to chose iMovie from "open with...".
    How to convert this .3g2 video to a form that will allow me to edit it in iMovie?

    You will need to convert it to something that iMovie can edit.
    1) The first step is to see if QuickTime can play it. See if you can open it in QuickTime Player.
    If you can, Proceed to Step 3
    2) If QuickTime cannot play it, I would try to download a set of open source codecs called Perian. They will handle many odd codecs like this. Go to Perian.ORG and download them. Then go back to step 1.
    Note: If Perian does not work for you, come back for some more ideas.
    3) Once QuickTime can play it, you need to convert it to something iMovie can edit. If you have QuickTime Pro, use that. If you would prefer a free alternative, download MPEG STREAMCLIP from Squared 5. Drag the 3G2 clip into MPEG Streamclip and then FILE/Export to QuickTIme...
    Choose Apple Intermediate Codec (for highest quality) or choose h.264 (for smallest file size) and save it in a place you can find it.
    4) Now open iMovie, and use FILE/IMPORT...MOVIES to import the converted file into iMovie for editing.

  • Import m2t into iMovie HD

    I want to edit m2t files. I hope to import them into iMovie HD. I understand that using QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback and MPEG Streamclip that I can convert the files into something that iMovie HD can use.
    If I use that option what format would give the best quality after converting from the m2t.
    I also wonder if I buy QuickTime Pro and QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback, will I be able to import the m2t file directly into iMovie without using MPEG Streamclip.
    Any information on these topics is appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1.5GHz/512GB/80GB/SuperDrive/BT/APX/Backlit KB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB/100GB

    I decided to buy the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback and downloaded the free MPEG Streamclip. I went to the export suggested by Karsten and it only gave 4:3 aspect ratios as choices. I decided to convert to MPEG; that seemed to keep full quality, but no sound came through QuickTime. The m2t file and the converted MPEG both play the sound in VLC. Converting the file to MPEG with MP2 audio played in QuickTime with sound, however when importing to iMovie HD, the progress fails very quickly without any report of an error. I have not yet tried importing the MPEG that had no sound in QuickTime into iMovie but that will be my next step. They tacked the HD acronym onto the iMovie title, but it sure is a pain in the *** to work with the HD content I have.

  • Trouble Importing Photos into iMovie

    I am trying to import photos into iMovie and am having trouble. They look like they are importing OK, and when the import is through (the red bar has finished loading) the picture disappears and the clip becomes blank. This is happening when I import from the finder, from iPhoto, or from FILE>Import, and with lots of different photo sizes, none seem to work. My iMovie project file is located on an external drive with tons of space. I have plenty of space of the startup disk, so I don't know why this is happening, and it was working fine a few days ago. Any ideas?

    I had this problem last year (August-Sept 2007), and I'm having it again now (August 2008). When I import jpeg photos from iPhoto to iMovie, they turn black and are not accessible in iMovie. In addition, this time when I imported several photos, the replay of the iMovie became jerky. When I threw out the photos, the movie became smoother, the way it was originally. There seems to be some sort of bug that has not been fixed in over a year.

  • Trouble importing video into iMovie from External HD

    I have video from my Panasonic Full HD camera.  I have already transferred the video off the camera and onto an external hard drive.  When I try to import the video into iMovie those files are grayed out.  Does anyone have any idea how to make this work?
    It is all my video of my son's first year since birth!

    It is very important that when you transferred the video off the camera, you kept all files and folders from the camera. If you did, you can open iMovie and use FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE and navigate to the folder that contains the contents that you removed from the camera.
    In the future, open iMovie and use FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA. This will bring up an import screen. There you can click a button that says Create Camera Archive. This will automatically get you all the files you need off the camera, and it gives you a good backup.
    You can also import directly into iMovie from this screen.
    If you did not preserve the contents of the camera - for example, you just copied the .mts files, but did not copy the rest of the files and folders, you will need a third party app to convert the .mts files so that iMovie can read them. Two apps that people use for this are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD. They are pricey, but if you did not copy the full camera contents, this may be your best bet.

  • Importing Video into iMovie using Mac the Ripper

    How do I import video into iMovie using Mac the Ripper? I ripped the video content onto my computer but it was not converted into a file that I can import.

    I think it's trend for all users since we can get more funny from digital life. Also it's necessary sometimes for us to save our video or dvd files with other methods, i have no idea but use something like converters.To my experience, mactheripper is not what you want,maybe you can try this dvd ripper for mac.Maybe ripper is illegal, but i just get my oringinal files, and i want to do more with it, that's just it!

  • Why are the movies I took on my iPad long and skinny with black edges when I import them into iMovie

    I took several short video clips on my iPad and when I imported them into iMovie they are long and skinny with black on both sides. My other movies from my camcorder fill the frame. How can I convert them to be full frame. They are .mov format from the iPad?

    From what you describe, you probably held your iPad vertically rather than horizontaly when you shot your movie.
    The picture in iMoive is a rectangle oriented horizontally, so it's showing your vertical movie as large as it can.
    If you cropped your vertical picture to fit the horizontal ratio of iMovie you'd have to cut off a lot of the picture.
    Soeone even made a mock PSA about this subject.
