Importing MS Word formatted document, format changes!?

I'm showing my ignorance of this product again (and apologies for that being the case, as I'm really trying to get up to speed on this product but seem to keep failing at it...  I swear I actually did understand PageMaker and other similar products when they were in their heyday!), but I'm struggling to import formatted text into a structured FrameMaker document (book).
I'm cheating a bit and have copied a .book (and all the included files) from a prior document that was created by the tech writer that I'm working to fill-in for.  The main section of that .book includes a .fm file that is the primary document.  There are several other pieces of the book that I have successfully updated (for now), including the table of contents (which will likely lead to frustration later when I need to update the entire .book).
Anyway, I select all of the text in the flow that I want to replace, delete it all (whee, gone that quickly!) and then use File > Import to import an MS Word 2007 formatted document.  That document includes a numbered list that has sub numbers as part of it...
For example:
1. Heading...
Text...
* Bulleted List
* Bulleted List item, etc.
1.1 Further information related to 1 above
More text
* More bulleted lists
- sub to that bullet list
- additional sub to the bulleted list
* More bullet list
2. New Heading
Hopefully that comes through in a way that helps what I'm working with make sense.
Anyway, I want to import the nicely formatted MS Word document back into Frame to replace the content that was there before.  Alternatively, if there is a simple way to edit the content that was there previously and retain the bulk of the formatting, then I'm game.  The key thing for me is getting the numbered list to look and work right, with the sub numbers where needed.  When I tried to edit the text that was there and get the listing right I'm lost as to how to edit it in a way that makes sense to me.  Again, it may just be ignorance on my part, and again I apologize and appreciate any assistance anyone can lend.
I swear FrameMaker 9 just makes me long for the good old days of working on a Xyvision system (or even worse the old Penta system that I worked on before that), or at least makes me want to find a copy of Quark Xpress or something similar ;-)
Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be lent to this poor lost soul :-}

Barry,
but I'm struggling to import formatted text into a structured FrameMaker document (book).
import an MS Word 2007 formatted document.
First, I doubt that you are working with a structured document. If you are, you do not want to import a Word file into a structured Frame document, because you will then have to apply the structure. A structured document is like an XML document but with the formatting added. That is, a structured document has elements inside elements, etc. To see whether it really is a structured document, open one up, place the insertion point inside a text flow, and select StructureTools > Structure View (FrameMaker 9), or something similar for your version of Frame. You should see a window with little rounded boxes hanging from vertical lines...that is the document's structure. If the window is empty, you do not have a structured document.
Furthermore, importing a formatted Word file into an unstructured Frame document does not guarantee the same formatting in Frame as in Word. I never do it, so I will let others explain more about that.
Alternatively, if there is a simple way to edit the content that was there previously and retain the bulk of the formatting, then I'm game.  The key thing for me is getting the numbered list to look and work right, with the sub numbers where needed.
Of course, FrameMaker allows you to edit its files. In an unstructured document, you format things virtually the same as you do in Word, that is, you apply styles (also called tags) to paragraphs. So, you have to be, or get, familiar with the available styles. For nested lists, there are typically two styles for each level of the list. One of the styles/tags will have a name indicating it is the tag to be used for the FIRST item in the list. This tag resets the numbering to 1. For example, if the outer list has a tag named numbered_list, then there is likely another tag named numbered_list_first. The numbered_list_first tag is applied to the first item in the list and the numbered_list tag is applied to the remaining items in the list. The "first" tag restarts the numbering and the other tag simply increments the numbering.
Sublists might have tags like sublist_numbering. I have seen tags named list_alpha (for lists numbered with letters), list_roman (for lists numbered with roman numerals), etc. It all depends upon how the tags were created and by whom.
I suggest you read more about this in the FrameMaker user manual. The user manual explains the guts of list numbering.
I hope this helps,
Van

  • Importing Word 2007  documents: linked images getting duplicated!

If I import a Word 2007 document (.docx) to a page in
Dreamweaver CS4, either by File-> import or drag and drop,
images (in the /web_images folder) for which I have already
inserted hyperlinks in the Word document, are getting duplicated
and the link in the Dreamweaver page now points to the new,
duplicate, image, not the original. For example, an image, say
bike.jpg gets copied to bike_000.jpg and the web page link points
    to /web_images/bike000.jpg.
This is not only clumsy, it is asking for trouble if for any
reason an image needs to be updated or whatever somewhere down the
    road.
I have tried importing with both full and just basic
formatting, but the result is the same. I haven't found anything in
    Dreamweaver preferences about this.
    Any ideas?

    Hi again
    Thanks for the clarification.
Okay, so really what you are doing is identical to clicking File > Import > Word Document, because all you are doing by choosing PDF is pre-selecting PDF as the listed file types. Once you change it to point to Word documents it's no different.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How to repair a corrupted word 2013 document?

Yesterday I was working on a very important Microsoft Word (2013) document, when it suddenly crashed. Upon trying to reopen the file Word said: “The
file is corrupted and cannot be opened”. I have tried all of the other methods of restoring it, such as opening it in a different program, or opening it and choosing "open and repair" in MS Word.

When a Word document file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
    1. First of all, you can try the recovery function integrated with Microsoft Word, as follows:
    1) On the File menu, click Open.
    2) In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file that you want to open.
    3) In the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the file.
    4) Select the file that you want to recover.
    5) Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
You may find more information about this at:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-the-text-from-a-damaged-document-HP005189610.aspx (for Word 2003)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893672/en-us (for Word 2007/2010/2013)
    2. Second, since Word 2003, it provides a "Document Recovery" or "AutoRecover" mechanism so that when Word is shutdown abnormally, the Word file being edited will be recovered when Word is launched next time, which makes the file recovery possible.

    3. If 1 and 2 does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Word Repair at
    http://www.datanumen.com/word-repair/
It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.

I have created a resume on Word and every time I try to send this document through Gmail, the format changes. This has happened since I have owned this computer but this time, I really need this to work. This happens when I send other documents as well. How can I fix this?

Thank you! I have answered my own question

  • How do I  import a word document without format errors?

I am trying to import a word document into Dreamweaver to turn it into HTML so I can enter it into an email. I don't want to send the email with an attachment, I want to be able to insert it into the body. Dreamweaverclaims to be able to do this successfully. How do I import without error and make it editable?

Word formatted text injects MS junk code into your web pages that you don't want.  For best results, only paste unformatted text into DW.  Then, use DW's CSS editor to style your text and layout however you wish.

When I send open office documents to a PC user (even saved and sent in the word format), the document reaches with serious format changes and is rendered unusable to the PC user. How to overcome the problem??

I don't use OpenOffice (I have it on my internal just to play around with, but seldom even open it). I do use MS Word and have few problems sharing files - it's usually a font issue so I tend to use MS fonts for documents that I know will need to be shared.
Unless you need to make collaborative changed to the document, you could always save it as a pdf file. With Acrobat Pro you can even save a pdf file to a Word document with very little change in formatting.
If I were you - and you have a need for .doc or .docx files to travel and play nicely - I'd just invest in MS Office. If you don't have to send a Word file, try pdf.

  • Crystal Reports Formatting issues when exporting to Word Editable document

Version: CR XI, I am editing a document exported from CR to Word Editable
When exporting to a Word Editable (.rtf) document the formatting changes.  For example: lines that were drawn in the report do not come across, there  is a tab in front of each line and a carriage return at the end of each line and spacing and justification formatting are not the same.  Is there a way to export to Word Editable and keep the formatting integrity? This report was developed by a third party but I can edit it if needed.

Pages 5 is, as an early reviewer put it, "an unmitigated disaster." Not only does it lack some 100 feautres that are present in Pages 09 (4.3), it is also VERY buggy, A quick look through these discussions will reveal a painful litany of data corruption, files that cannot be opened, lost data, and other anomalies. Links do not export reliably to PDFs, and, as you've discovered, export to .docx format is unreliable. Sadly, the best advice is to trash Pages 5.1 and use Pages 4.3 or — yes, it's come to that — Word instead.

  • My pages is showing error while opening a document in microsoft word format. Please help

While trying to open documents in microsoft word format, pages is showing an error. It is unable to complete the task and is requesting me to reopen pages but then no response. However I am able to work on pages format. Please help.
    thanks

When you open a Word document in Pages, it is translated into the internal .pages document format — and you are no longer working in the original Word document format. This translation also occurs in reverse when exporting a document back to Word. When you open a Word document in Pages, if it has issues with the translation (missing font characteristics, other issues), it will open a warning dialog box and display these issues for you.
If however, you prefer to always work in the native Word document format, and not risk translation issues, then you should be using MS Word in Office for Mac 2011 with the latest update.

  • I cannot send a Pages document, Word format via email from my ipad if it has a picture in the the doc.  I can send a Word doc if it does not have a pic in it or pdf with a pic.  Any thoughs why a word doc with a pic in it won't email in Pages?  thanks

I cannot send a Pages document, Word via email if the doc contains a picture.  If I email a Pages doc without a pic in Word format or pdf with a pic it with go through to sender?  Not sure why Pages won't send Word doc with a picture in it.  I check the security on the email recipient and the email doesn't get blocked or throw in the junk box?
    thanks,

If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read.

After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot share my pages document by mail as a word format - HELP please!!!

  • Since OS X Yosemite upgrade, cannot share document from pages in word format. Therefore document cannot be opened by non apple user.  How do I get around this please?

Since the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 update to my iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) , I can no longer "share" a document from Pages in word format via email.  It can be sent as an att but then as "Pages"  cannot be accessed by a non apple receiver.  Please what is the answer, the old method was fast, simple and efficient.
Out of my depth appreciate some help.

Are you using the File > Export function? It will deposit a Word document onto your desktop (or any folder you choose) and then you can attach it to your email.

  • I have payed for Adobe acrobat pro but now i can not convert a pdf document to a word format, why?

I have payed for Adobe acrobat pro for one year and it is valid to november 2015, but now i can not convert a pdf document to a word format, why ?

    Hi m_karhulinna,
If you have Acrobat Pro, you can save directly to Word format from within Acrobat by choosing File > Save as Other > Microsoft Word > Word Document.
(It sounds like you may be trying to use the ExportPDF online service, which is separate from Acrobat, and not necessary in your case.)

  • Canon Printer MG5420. How can I save a scanned document in the Word format?

I can only find the option to save scanned documents in the PDF format. I want to know if there is a way to save in Word. Can anyone help me? Canon Printer MXZ5420.

    Hello Yvonne.
Specialized OCR software may be needed in order to save files directly to Microsoft Word format.  Our software does not have this capability.
If you are attempting to scan a basic, text-only document.  You can use our IJ Scan Utility to scan and make adjustments.
     1.  Start, point to (All) Programs, Canon Utilities and then open the Canon IJ Scan Utility.
     2.  Click 'Settings' on the lower right corner.
     3.  Click 'Document Scan' on the left.
     4.  Under 'Application Settings' on the right, select 'Start (OCR)' and choose 'Canon My Image Garden' in the menu.
     5.  Click OK.
     6.  In the IJ Scan Utility, click 'Document'.
When scanning is completed, Notepad will open and you will be able to edit and save your document.
