Importing music after library is deleted

I recently lost my Library in iTunes and proceeded to import music from my C:\mymusic dir. When doing this, I get 3 or 4 copies of every song imported into my iTunes library. Is there a switch or setting I need to change.
Thanks
Kevin

  • ITunes automatically imports music after re-boots (damaged .itl file)

Every time I start ITunes after my computer has been re-booted, ITunes starts importing my music library and says I have a damaged Music Library file (itl). If I allow ITunes to import my music files then it works fine (all playlists and ratings intact) even if I exit & re-enter the Itunes Application. However, as soon as I reboot the system I get the same damaged file dialog box. Also, I've tried waiting after I have booted the system for a long time to make sure it isn't conflicting with startup processes.
I have a lot of songs and it takes ITunes a long time to import each time, and it is really frustrating. A temporary work-around is that I make a backup copy of the "itl" and "xml" files each time after I exit Itunes when I have made changes. Then after a reboot when I start Itunes, I stop it from importing the library, finding artwork, gapless scan, etc... I copy the previously saved "itl" & "xml" files into the ITunes folder and the ITunes program will then start up correctly with all my music files, ratings & playlists.
    _*A. COMMENTS*_
    1. Since the "itl" file I copy into itunes folder (as per my work-around)is an exact copy of the "itl" file that was originally in the ITunes folder after a reboot, I don't think the ITunes file is actually damaged, since ITunes will boot from this file after Itunes is started a 2nd time. This also shows me that it is not a path issue.

    1. Dell 3.4Ghz Pentium 4
    2. MS Windows XP Home Edition (service pack 3)

    6. Spy-bot Search and Destroy spyware checker(resident)
    5. My Music files are located in C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Music\ (itunes folder is also in same folder)
    6. My Itunes Library .itl file is 2,842 KB
    7. My Itunes Music Library .xml file is 16,580 KB
_*C. WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR*_
    1. I have re-installed ITunes
    2. I ran scan disk (fixed errors & checked physical disk). It did say it repaired something with an "XML" extension, but I didn't write it down because I thought it fixed the issue, but I don't think it was the itunes xml file
    3. I cleaned a bunch of junk files (internet cache, etc) and defragged
    4. I completely un-installed ITunes and ran a registry cleaner to remove all references to Itunes, Then I installed ITunes. ITunes imported my library and lost all my ratings & playlists however it found all of my artwork (not just automatically created from internet) I re-used an old .itl file for ratings/playlists. However I did try with the newly imported "itl" file and the same problem was persistent
    5. I tried restoring my computer to month ago when everything was working correctly
    6. I tried for hours looking through multiple forums and the ones that I found that have the same problem (only after reboots) were never resolved. Most of the others just tell people how to get their library back
    7. I tried to call Apple Itunes tech support on the phone and was told that Apple does not provide Itunes phone support for PC's. I did pay good money for 30Gb & 16Gb Iphones, so I am giving Apple Money. I would own a Mac however my profession uses software not supported by Apple.
    _*D. QUESTIONS*_
    1. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I'm going to try to figure out how to start in some sort of safe mode and log the processes to see if there are any conflicts, but I'm running out of options.
    2. I did copy rather large 1200x12000 artwork from the internet into some of the CD's because I was printing them, however I later removed the artwork and replaced it with 300x300. I noticed the Album artwork Cache & Download folders seems rather large and convoluted. I was thinking about possibly deleting all artwork from my library and deleting these folders to see if there is something in there.
Please Help, I've spent far too many hours trying to resolve this issue. I just don't understand that after uninstalling, and cleaning registry that re-installing didn't fix this issue.

    Followup:
The link you posted wasn't really any help, but I believe I have finally resolved the issue (after 2 consecutive reboots without problems -- knocks on wood). I wish I could single out exactly what resolved the issue, but I went crazy and did a lot of things last night/this morning (and didn't have the patience to reboot after each single change).
Here's a list of a few things I remember doing
    1. Installed updated hardware drivers using Uniblue driver update software (a couple were bundles that affected quite a few things). I booted up this morning only to get a repeated "REFMONINITIALIZATIONFAILED" dialog with the blue screen of death. I wasn't worried as I did a complete backup of all my personal files last night, anticipating a full rebuild today. So the next time I rebooted I used the "last known good configuration".
    2. I don't have any indexing programs (that I'm aware of), but I clicked the library file, xml files and all other files in the itunes library root directory and unchecked the "For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file" box after right clicking and selecting "properties" and then "advanced"
    3. I rolled back ALL Uniblue SpeedUPMYPC2009 system tweaks (except internet) that were automatically done when I ran the program on 1/10/10.
I have a strong inclination that one (or more) of the Uniblue system tweaks did something that prevented my library file from being accessed the first time after after a boot that I started ITunes. I apparently hadn't accessed ITunes for a couple weeks after I ran the Uniblue program, so it didn't register that it could have caused the issue. At some point in the future I'll try to pin down which tweak caused the problem, but for now I've wasted far too much dealing with this and don't care if my computer runs a few milliseconds slower.
    Thank you for responding

  • HELP New user, importing Music from library ( WMA )

I am a new user to Itunes ( bit late i know ).
I need to move my music ( my music folder ) into itunes.
I have over 40Gb of music. If i import music folder through Itunes using the file > Import folder menu, i am lead to belive that firstly all my music will need to be converted to Mp3. this is not a problem althouigh i am sure it will take a long time.
My main worry is that when converting the music into itunes the origional my music folder will stay where it is therefore doubling up my music to over 80Gb and therefore will not fit on my hard drives.
i tried to cut and paste my music files into the itunes music folder within my music although it doesnt appear in my library???
    Any help appreciated!!!!
    Many thanks.
    Dell PC   Windows XP

Moving files into the iTunes library doesn't comvert them to MP3.
iTunes can only use unprotected WMA files. If you are trying to add protected WMA songs, they won't go into the iTunes library.
You can leave all the music files where they are. iTunes will only copy them to the iTunes folder if you have that option checked.

My laptop is Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz. After installed 10.4.11, I double-click some mp3 songs. iTunes pop-up as usually then it takes no action. Then I try File->import . Not thing happen either.
and The Safari 3.0.4 from 10.4.11 haves problem, too. I went to Adobe website to download Acrobat Reader 8. I went into the page and select the os version, but the continue button didn't show up. then I used Firefox. It's fine. Can I switch back to 10.4.10?

Hi, gracebug. Installing and using OS 9 for Classic mode does not require OS 9 drivers to be installed. They're only needed if you want to start the computer up in OS 9, which isn't possible with your Mac anyway.
See whether these articles help you get Classic support installed, and let us know how you make out:

  • Anyone else getting errors when importing Music Library music into non-native apps?

I have had a bunch of Music Production apps On my iPad for a long time and all the way through iOS four iOS 5 they worked just fine importing songs from my iPod library on my iPad and my iPhone however all of a sudden after the iOS six update they do not any longer seem to have the ability to import these songs.  It appears to be a universal problem across ALL non-native apps ... On songs that are DRM-Free.  I have specifically tried importing tracks that have imported before with no problems, downloading new copies of the same tracks, and purchasing new DRM-free content in the iTunes Store.  None of which will work.  My devices are not jailbroken, or altered from factory in any way, I just purchased a new iPhone 5 and a new iPad 3 and neither of them are allowing me to import these tracks.  I have tried:
    AnyTune / AnyTune HD
Vocalive (paid version) from IK Multimedia
Amplitube / Fender Amplitube from IK Multimedia
    ISequence Pro HD
    Studio HD
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  I have -- on a few apps -- been shown the "Convert this song to a different format and try again" dialog, and I can import songs if I use my laptop and a browser, but I can't seem to import any song directly from the Music Library stored locally on my iPad or my iPhone.
    Help?
    Best Regards, Rob Norton

    Thanks, Ed.
Well, if iTunes is running, I figured out that you can drag the folder where the wav files are directly onto the main portion of the iTunes screen. This will
import the wav files into iTunes. Then group select the new song
entries and use "convert selection to AAC" from the Advanced menu.
There may be a way to convert without creating double entries for the
songs (I think that's the way you have to do it in iTunes: hence my attitude that iTunes is convenient in some respects, but less than clear in other respects..in other words, it's not a perfect program), but I delete the wav tracks after the conversion.
This is what I've gleaned from using iTunes a bit and from having been advised by friends. So, other than using a third-party freeware like X Lossless Decoder to convert music files before moving them onto iPod, apparently this is what you have to deal with when using the iTunes program.
If any Apple people are reading this, I would personally like the iTunes "importing" and display functions to be clearer and less cumbersome to use (like that third-party freeware). iTunes seems to be easy enough to use if you're importing music from a CD, but measurably less so if you just want to convert music files residing elsewhere on the computer's hard drive.

  • My itunes cannot keep imported music, only purchased music. all of my playlists are gone, and new ones are gone after 2 days, please help

my i tunes loses all of my imported music and playlists after 2 days of making and importing them, its like the itunes is resetting to default, but all of my purchased songs stay on the package but not my cds.
    anyone ever had this problem?
imported music is lost but purchased stays on.
is this a pc problem or an itunes problem?
also i cannot add a file to my folders, i follow the process of adding file to library but nothing happens.

It should - it's worked for quite a few other folks. It helped that you wrote about having ESET. Other security software can do this. There's a similar issue with folks running Vista on Sony Vaio PCs - there's some Sony bloatware that conflicts with itunes. Carbonite backup software can also cause it.
    Thanks for the points.

  • Imported Music is missing from library

I've recently started having problems seeing imported music in my iTunes library.
I put a CD into my computer, and the CD is visible within iTunes in the devices Tab, as normal. I import the CD, and can watch the tracks as they are added to my computer (in the devices tab). However, after the import is completed, the tracks are not visible in the Library:Music window. The files are there on my hard drive (I can see the .m4a files in Music-->iTunes-->iTunes Music), and the folders are appropriately named by artist, but after I eject the CD I can't find them within iTunes. All of my old music is there, just not the new stuff.
I've tried moving the file of the music from the iTunes folder onto my desktop, and then adding it back into iTunes. I get the window saying the files are being copied into my iTunes library, and they go back into the iTunes folder, but I still can't see them from within iTunes. I can even drag and drop the files onto my iPod within the Devices tab within iTunes, and add the music to my iPod that way, but I don't know why I can't see the tracks in my Library:Music.
This has only become a problem within the last week, but I don't think I've changed any preferences that would cause this problem.
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem, it started like 2 days ago! Songs that I imported from burned CD's a few years ago are suddenly not available on iTunes because iTunes can't find them. And I can't remember their file paths either, so that's a bit of an issue...
A few songs that I downloaded from random sites are also missing...is this a temporary iTunes bug?

  • Cant import music to itunes from my library

i've been trying to import music from my computer library to itunes to free up space.
when i put a cd in my comp to add it to itunes it imports fine. but if i move a song from my computer's library to itunes and then delete the song from my computer's library it says it cant be played and would i like to search for it.
do i have to save my music to a disk 1st before i can completely delete it from my comp and then import it from the disk to itunes??
thats the only thing i can think of to make it work.
    some1 pleeeeease help me

    What happens when you try?
You should be able to drag-and-drop a music file that is already on your computer into iTunes. As you drag the file, you should see the "link" appear in iTunes and a blue box appear around the songs list, as shown below:
Notice the blue line above the title "London can take it". This blue box will appear regardless of which "view" you are using. Here's the same thing but for a folder with several songs in it:
For File/Add song to Library, use the shortcut CTRL+O or use the ALT key, followed by F key and then the A key (that's File/Add file to Library) and navigate to the file you want.
For File/Add Folder to Library, use the ALT key, followed by the F key and then the D key (File/Add folder to Library) and navigate top the folder you want. I cannot remember the shortcut for this option.

  • Somehow my entire itunes library got deleted ... I have the old ipod nano, which does not connect with iCloud so it has all been saved there, BUT .. I cannot load all my music that I put on and I no longer have the cd's PLEASE HELP!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!  Somehow my entire iTunes library got deleted, and I cannot sync all my music that I put on from cd's (which I no longer have). All the purchased music has been synced, but nothing else! All my other devices are synced with iCloud and lost the material as well ... I am so frustrated, because the nano has not been working properly, and I am afraid of losing it forever, and of course the cd's I backed everything with are MIA!!!! GRRR! Please HELP!!!
    Thank you so much!

I can't tell from your post what you have and what you don't have. Are you saying the files are no longer on your computer, no longer on your iPod, or both?

  • I've moved an internal hard drive with all my music and library files to a new computer --- how can I get itunes to import the whole library while keeping my metadata?

I've always kept all my music on its own dedicated internal hard drive.  Now I've got a new PC, finally made the switch to Windows 7 from XP, and I've moved my internal hard drive over to the new machine.
I installed iTunes, but I'm having a heck of a time getting it to import the music and library files, keeping all my playlists and metadata.  Why is this so hard?

If your New to You Used Mac is froom mid 2012 and originally came with Lion installed on it you will need to Reinstall that version using the Online Internet Recovery system and then at first boot of the new install use the Setup Assistant system to copy over all the data from your wifes old hard drive.
To access the Online system at startup hold down the Command + Option/alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. From the resulting screen that cames up, Mac OS X Utilities, select Disk Utility and then the top most entry for the hard drive, left hand panel, drive model number and size, and then the Partition tab. Repartition the drive as One Partition, You Must do that to get ride of the Mavericks Recovery HD partition which is hidden. Name the partition Macintosh HD with a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Once that is done exit disk utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X.
