Importing my Cannon mini HDV Vixia HV30

I recently installed premiere elements 7 on my Vista 64 bit operating system. When I begin to capture the video from my camcorder, via firewire, there is no preview or anything that shows that I'm recording. I know that when I press capture or begin my camcorder begins to play, but nothing comes up on my monitor. I stop it and then try to view the file/project anyways and nothing is available. I have no idea what needs to be done. I did notice a time or two a still shot will pop up. But that's it.  Any suggestions?
I tried using Microsoft movie maker, but it doesn't work either.

Used to be the case that MS OS's shipped with and installed most MS CODEC's by default. With Vista, MS made some changes. I believe that there is a Vista CODEC "pack" available from MS.
Since later in the thread, you comment on your wife's computer being able to do the Capture and playback, it would be worth a trip to the MS site to see. It is highly possible that her OS does have all necessary CODEC's installed.
One can also download and install G-Spot. It will do two things:
1.) survey your system for all properly installed CODEC's. Do not be alarmed if it reports that some of the Adobe CODEC's are missing, as those CODEC's just have a different naming convention in the Registry - this is a false-positive.
2.) tell you what the details of your file are, when you drag it to G-Spot. Part of this will be the necessary CODEC's for both the Audio and Video, and whether you have them, or not. It will give you the exact name of the missing CODEC's.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Canon  Vixia HV30 capture issue on CS6 (Mac OSX)

This might be (hopefully) something in setup, but under Mac OSX Lion (10.7.4) / Premiere CS6, i am unable to capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30 - it's either i get a monstruous noise or simply get a 'capture device offline' message.
No one ever had a similar problem even withanother cam here? I posted weeks ago but never got any reply.
Am using the same cam under Windows with Premiere CS4 and never faced such an issue.
Matter of some sort of CODEC ?  Does not seem to require any specific driver for Mac based on Canon website.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Solved... (Almost!)
Someone pointed out that Canon has a software (they said there was no driver for Mac OS X so I had stopped looking...) But if it may help others, there is a ''CameraWindow'' for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8  available.
As soon as I installed it, I could capture both from Adobe Premiere CS6 and iMovie.
One problem remaining though : the noise (feedback-like) that gets out from... the system's sound card ! (when capture is ongoing). I have to shut down the volume completely.  Never had this issue under Windows, need to figure out why this happens now.
Jeff thanks again for your assistance, even though the solution was somewhere else.
If anyone has a clue for the noise issue ... please let me know

  • How do I import video from my canon vixia hv40 into imovie?

How do I import video from my canon vixia hv 40 into imovie?

First decide which editing program you intend to use; iMovie, FCE, FCP, Adobe Premier, etc. Read the user's manual or Help files for your chosen application to determine the steps needed: the procedure will vary somewhat from application to application.
Next, with the camera and the computer off, connect the Firewire cable to both units, then power up. Set the camera to VTR (play) mode. Open your editing program and follow the instructions provided in the Help files for capturing DV footage from tape.
Do NOT expect the camera to mount on your desktop as if it were a hard drive or optical disc.

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.
No matter what I do, I cannot find the folder for my camcorder in the device section in the finder.
When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.

  • I have a Canon Vixia HV30 camera and can't get Final Cut Pro x to recognize it. Any suggestions?

How can I get Final Cut ProX to recognize my Canon Vixia HV30 camera?

Does your Mac have a FW 800 port? If it does, use a 4 pin to 9 pin connection. If you have only Thunderbolt, use a FW>Tb adaptor. Either way, your Mac should see the camera. If it does, so will FCP.

  • Optimal export from Canon Vixia HV30 via Final Cut Express for Blip.tv

I am looking to optimize the export of my videos from Final Cut Express (4.0.1). I shoot HD Widescreen on a Canon Vixia HV30. I've been having problems getting good quality in a smallish package.
For some reason, the videos come off the camera at the odd ratio of 496 x 279. This means I have to export them that size, but the final product ends up being huge. Literally, the screen is larger than the computer screen, and I have to view it on half size. I feel I could get more bang for my buck if these videos could be exported smaller initially.
Here are my settings for export (as Quicktime Movie with Quicktime conversion):
    Compression: H.264
    Quality: High
    Key frame rate: 24
    Encoding: Multi-pass
The only tweak I make is to set the kbits/sec to between 3000 and 3500, which gets me a decent looking video that's about two minutes long and between 40 and 70MB.
If I try to tweak the ratio or the format, the picture gets squeezed or the quality drops significantly. I've also been running into the problem of skipping playback on Blip.tv, which recently switched to a new version of Flash.
Any help on how to shrink the video and keep the quality?
    Regards,
    Philip

Export to where? Where are you trying to get to? Export QuickTime Movie is the original converted FCE media file.

  • Vixia HV30

My Vixia HV30 sometimes plays back at near double speed. How can I fix this?

    Hi dpfoto!
    Thank you for posting.
During normal playback of the video, if the FF or REW buttons are held down without realizing it, fast playback is enabled.  To stop this, simply press the PLAY/PAUSE button again.

  • I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. Every time I'm importing vedeo using MiniDV HDV Sony camera, FCP X is importing normally, with 2.5 GB of RAM free. Then, after 10 or 15 min of importing, FCP is frozen, and free RAM is close to zero. What happens?

I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. When I turn FCP X, I usually have 2.5 RAM free and the program works normally when I edit. The issue is importing video. I use a Sony HDV camera to import from miniDV tapes, and Apple says Sony HDVs are supported. Yet every time I'm importing, it works normally for 10-15 min, then the amount of free RAM quickly (yet gradually) is reduced to almost zero (I used Memory Clean to dicover it) and then FCP X got frozen and I need to force quit it and start all over again, to work for another 15 min. Horrible! What is it?

Are using 10.0.7 (the latest version)?
Memory problems seem to have been alleviated with 10.0.6 and 10.0.7.
Please post the screenshots of Activity Monitor, as Tom asked. This will at least let us see if it is FCP X itself gobbling a lot of RAM or if you are suffering from the problem of OS X not releasing "Inactive Memory" in a timely manner - an issue that has been there for a long time :-(
You didn't mention whether you have the 27" or 21.5" iMac. Unfortunately, in the 21.5" adding RAM is a big hassle. But if you have the 27", then seriously consider upping the RAM. It is quite inexpensive, from the likes of Crucial or other reputable third parties.

  • Unable to import from Sony Mini DV DCR-HC46

I'm attempting to import video from a Sony Mini DV camcorder DCR-HC46 using a Sony iLink cable.
iMovie seems to recognize that the camera is attached and control it (clicking Import or Play will cause the camera to start playing). However though the camera is playing video iMovie window remains blank (blue).
I'm pretty sure that the cables are fine, since I was able to use them earlier with an old G4 power-book.
I've gone through all the suggestions in the Apple support page.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I quote QuickTimeKirk:
”Open the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities folder).
Try changing the settings to 44100Hz (CD Quality) or to 48000Hz (typical of the iMovie formats).
Others call this the GarageBand fix. Opening GB also resets the Audio MIDI Setup.”

  • Imovie HD will not import from my Sony HDV-FX1

    Please Help.
I have an IMAC G5 running with OS X 10.4.3, and I'm using a new Sony HDR-FX1 camera. The first 3 movies I made worked great, but yesterday I tried importing video and now it won't import or even display. Imovie displays (HD-1080i-30) after the movie title on the top bar, when I plug in my HD camera. I can control the camera with the play, stop, fast forward and rewind buttons, and even though I see the video on my camera it won't import. If I put an old non HD tape into the camera I can get it to import, (after changing the camera settings).
I've repeatedly tried the Garage band fix, but to no effect. I've also tried my old, non-hd camera, which works fine.
I also tried resetting my imovie plist as suggested on another post.
    Is Apple acknowledging this problem?

    I figured out what happened,
I somehow turned the "i.link conv" on my camera to "on(HDV-DV)", when I switched it back to OFF all my problems went away. OOPS!, Sorry!

  • How to import MTS files from Canon Vixia HF M40 to Mac for editing?

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF M40 and I have been able to import the MTS video files to iMovie, but now that I want to edit in Adobe Premiere, I am at a loss. Can someone tell me an easy way to import these files to either my computer or into the program itself for editing. It is entirely too time consuming to import into iMovie and convert every single file to quicktime only to import into Premiere and export yet again (not to mention the quality loss). Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • Video import problem from mini dv

    Hello,
I have a problem importing footage from a *Canon mv700i* DV camera (via firewire) with imovie 09. I can control the camera but only see pixels when I hit play. This problem has been troubling me for some time. I already found this solution: http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/v...idv/11613.html
    (the *garageband fix*)
This used to work but now it doesnt and I dont really know what the real problem is anyway. In the past it sometimes worked miraculously but then some days later I have the same problem.
    Could anyone please help me?

    Hi
Canon is known to be problematic when Daisy chained with an external hard disk to Mac.
Here is my unsorted list on this topic.
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape.
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
    from LKN 1935.
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
    from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?

    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    No Camera or bad import
    • USB hard disk
    • Network storage
    • File Vault is on

  • Importing problem w/ mini DV (missing frames)

    Hi all,
I have two different sets of mini DV tapes (shot with 2 different cameras). They are both game footage for football. Each set provides a different angle (wide angle and tight angle views). I imported both onto iMovie however I had problems with the tight tapes.
The wide angle tapes import just fine but when I try the tight tapes they don't register in the "frame boxes" to the right of the monitor. To be clear, the video itself shows up in the monitor just fine but doesn't appear in real time within the frames...and eventually it does but when I play it back the video is missing frames and is very jumpy.
Because the wide tapes work I know I'm not doing some basic thing wrong- I'm curious as to why the tape from the tight DVs doesn't register. I know the two cameras were different so consequently the two mini DVs are different. Does this have anything to do with the settings of each? It's very odd...any thoughts?
    -Greg

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Were the poor tapes shot at LP or Super-LP speed?
Could the heads in the poor (narrow) camera need cleaning? (Camcorders, especially Sonys, sometimes replace poor frames 'on-the-fly' while you're watching in the viewfinder, or on a monitor, but that doesn't happen when the poor recordings are exported via FireWire.)
What happens when you swap the tapes between the camcorders and then import? ..In other words, is it the tapes or the camcorders?
(NOTE: a Super Long Play tape swapped into another camcorder may not play back properly because of discrepancies in head alignment ..which may be causing the poor importing anyway - tape and heads shrink and expand in temperature extremes, so shooting a Super LP tape outdoors on a cold day and then replaying indoors in the warmth may produce poor tape/head alignment.)
Which cameras were they, and what happens when you swap the tapes between cameras?

  • Can you import video from Mini DV in separate clips?

I've finally got around to rescuing all the hours of video I've got stored on Mini DV tapes. When I imported one into iMovie though, it came in as one long clip. This is not ideal. I'd hoped/expected that the many clips would come in separately, based upon breaks in the timecode.
I guess I can work my way through the one long clip, cutting it into bits, but that's very time consuming and I may as well have imported the footage manually.
Does anyone know how I can get footage onto my Mac from Mini DV in separate clips? Or if there's an easy way to break this hour long clip I've already imported into pieces?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi
    As AppleMan1958 writes
Normal DV footage will be split into clips.
But I figur. If Your miniDV tape has a functioning TimeCode (not copy from VHS)
then iMovie 1 to HD6 - had it as an option to make a full import or as "Individual Clips"
This choise I can not find in iMovie'11.
May be it's still as a flag and by some chance - this got wrongly set.
To correct this (IF) - I would delete iMovie pref file/s and re-start iMovie and try to
    make a new Import/Capture.
    To do this -
    • Close iMovie
    • Find the pref file - iMovie pref file resides in.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences (folder)
and is named. (one or more of these) - and put it/them on desktop
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
and find too - and put it on desktop
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    • Now re-start iMovie and try to do a new Import.
    Did it work ?
    Yours Bengt W
