Importing my existing website

I recently switched from the PC world to the Mac. I developed a website using Frontpage, and now I would like to revise it using iWeb. Is there a way to import the website into iWeb so I can work on it and republish it? (From some other posts on the discussion forum, I'm assuming the answer is "no.")
Thanks.
New Mac user

No - you can't do this.
iWeb is not even capable of importing its own published files.
The application stores your website data in a domain.sites2 file located in Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb.
Once you have started your website in iWeb, make sure you have a backup of this file and update it every time you make changes to your site.

Log-in to your Remote Server and GET the site files using DW or your favorite

How many installations of DW did you have? You can have up to 2 at a time.

  • Import of existing website for updating

I am working with a group of professionals and we want to update the existing web site. Is there a tool that will grab the existing website that will save it locally so that I can modify and massage it using iWeb.
I have the permissions and password to upload the result to the existing domain, but obviously can't use iWeb to import to existing site directly. (seems odd to given html is a standard). I'm sure it would not render perfectly with iWeb... but if it gets me 90% there that would be a time saver.

Dreamweaver or an html editor such as TextWrangler.
If you want to use iWeb, you will have to re-build the site using iWeb - iWeb has no import facility, so is unable to open an already published/created site.

  • Import of existing website

I have created a website on my old ibookG4.
Cannot manage to import the page in my new MacBook to operate under iweb there
(the files are imported, but do not show up when opening iweb).
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.
You should backup this file whenever you make big changes to your site, because if it gets lost or damaged, you will have to start all over. Sadly, many many people learn this the hard way.
I have an Automator app on my site that will help you backup your Domain file(s). Click here to download it or visit http://iweb.varkgirl.com for more info. The app will make a .zip file of your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and save it to a location of your choosing.
Then check out Mozy for an online place to store your backups - I just found this and it seems great. They just recently released a Mac friendly version of their app - it automates the upload and encryption. You select the files you want to backup and it does the rest. You can set it to upload automatically after so many minutes of inactivity or once a day. It does it all in the background so you don't have to worry about it! 2GB of storage are free - plenty of room for most people's iWeb Domain.sites backups!
Disclaimer: By clicking the aforementioned link to Mozy, which has my referral code in it, you earn yourself (and me) 256MB of extra storage space. If you don't want that to happen, just go directly to http://www.mozy.com and sign up that way. Either way, you will find a great service! :)

  • Is there a way to import an existing website into Muse, or do you have to create everything anew?

I have some websites I created in DW, with style sheets, etc, and would like to convert them into a Muse site. Is that possible? Or do I have to create every Muse site from scratch?

    Hi,
Muse does not support HTML/CSS/Javascript at the moment. You can only open .muse extension in muse, but you can export you Muse site as html.
Please let me know if you have any other query.

  • How do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

how do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

An existing website as in: editing one which has not previously been uploaded via iWeb?
I don't think you can. With the wysiwyg editing of iWeb, you can create a whole new website, make a new subdomain site or even upload a few extra created pages.
Thing is iWeb will only upload or save what you are making in it, therefore you can upload a whole new website to a domain, or upload them manually with ftp-clients. That also means you can't import an exsisting, for example html, script and edit it.
So in short: for as far as I know, you can't import whole pages into iWeb and edit those, you can only create and upload them.
Or as in: editing one I've already made, and uploaded on the same Mac?
Then simple make the changes you want, and hit the "Publish" button in the far down-left corner of the window. It will then overwrite the site you currently have.

  • Can I use Muse with an existing website?*

I have several existing websites. A couple have more than 40,000 files already. Can I use Muse with an existing website?

    Printing_Services wrote:
Why exactly does Muse not support HTML import?
Muse and HTML generators like it only deal with HTML at the very end of production... at export. These generators have their own system (not based on HTML) of arranging text & graphics and structuring page relationships.  These kinds of apps have never been able to import HTML. As the world moves to more dynamic web sites (database driven and server-side scripted), it becomes even more unlikely that an HTML generator will ever import HTML.

  • Copy Existing Website into Dreamweaver

I've got an existing website online, using Filezilla to access my server files. I've tried to import my files into Dreamweaver using the Get function. All appeared to have transfered correctly but I'm getting a "Can't find a valid editor for this extension" anytime I try to open a file.
Is there an additional step I've missed? Should I have downloaded the files differently?
Please let me know the proper way to download server files and set them up in Dreamweaver.
    Much Thanks!

Does your developer use BestAddress HTML Editor instead of Dreamweaver? If so, that appears to be a propietary template file.
Or maybe it's a greeting card thing or a ChemDraw template, but I would bet on my first guess.

  • I already have an existing website.

I have an existing website and just bought my Mac. Is it possible to make changes on my old site with I web? My website was not created on an Apple. Thanks!

No. iWeb cannot import any websites that are already published whether they were created on an Apple Mac or not.
If you want to use iWeb, then you will have to completely re-build your site using it.

    Is the site...

We need a lot more information than that, Kelly. Where is it hosted? Was it originally done in Muse? If so, the easiest way is to get the Muse file from whoever did the site in the first place.

  • How do I import an existing finalised imovie into a new project either in part or full. The movie I want to import is filed under "movies" but greyed out when I go through the procedure in imovie 11

How do I import an existing finalised movie clip into  a new developing project ? I go through the imovie 11 procedure for importing and the list of clips (finalised and un-finalised) appears, but always "greyed out" which makes it impossible to create anything. I have tried placing it on the desk top and dragging but this doesn't work either.

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

  • How do i import my previous website into iWeb?

I had previously designed my website in iWeb and published it, i then had to wipe my hard drive but backed everything up, now i can't seem to open or import my old website back into iweb, any help please?

John ~ In your backup, look for Domain.sites2 file which is usually located here:
...Double clicking that file should open it in iWeb.

  • Adding a single page to pre-existing website

I currently have a website running on Amazon S3 and want to add a page to the domain using Muse and do not want to replace the pre-existing website.
    Example:
    Current web address:
    subsite.mywebsite.com
    Desired address of Muse-created site:
    subsite.mywebsite.com/musesite.html
subsite.mywebsite.com does not need to be modified in any way—my clients just need to be able to access musesite.html via a link using my brand's domain. Can this be accomplished using BusinessCatalyst provided hosting? If so, how can I accomplish this?

    Hi Joseph,
You need to create the page in Muse and then export the html to a local folder on your computer and then upload the exported content on the root folder of your existing business catalyst site. You will not be able to use the web forms with this approach.
If you can host the site in a sub directory, then you can create the page in the Muse and then publish directly to a sub-directory on the root, this way you will be able to use the web forms.

  • Need details on how to move existing website to Dreamweaver CS6 and to Business Catalyst web hosting

    Hi All,
I need assistance with transferring an existing website  - imagessays.com  -  (designed with Dreamweaver CS4) to my Creative Cloud CS6 account - and to web hosting by CS6 Business Catalyst.
…  step-by-step instructions would be most useful.  I've got the Dreamweaver CS6 onDemand book, etc.,  ...  I guess I’m just not enough of a geek to work my way through the steps and to get my site back moving ahead online.
Beyond that, need advice as to how to repair a couple of non-funcitonal links on the site (check out imagessays.com to see a couple of pics that don't work).  I'm looking forward to uploading more content and to do major upgrade to the site, but am unable to do so ... need technical support re how to do these simple (should be) things.
Since setting up the website over 5 years ago, I have migrated from Dreamweaver CS3 to CS4 .... and now to CS6 ...  and from a Dell XPS 450 running Windows XP to a Mac Pro desktop running Mac OS X.
These changes of version / machine / OS  have separated me from the ability to do the one simple thing that I need to do with this straightforward website, that is:  upload new pitchers and writins .
I look forward to assistance and support for this.
    Thanks,
    Jim
